G.R.E.A.T. Graduation in Danli, May 2013
G.R.E.A.T. GRADUATION DANLI, EL PARAÍSO HONDURAS May 16, 2013 Danli is located in the western Honduran department of El Paraíso, approximately 92 kilometers from Tegucigalpa. El Paraíso is known for its production of corn, tobacco, and cigars. Just like many of the big cities of Honduras, Danli is plagued by MS-13 and 18th Street gang activities and complex violent acts— including extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking, car theft, and contract murders. Therefore, the Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) Program, sponsored by the U.S. Embassy— administered by the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section and police instructors—is an alternative that helps prevent kids from joining gangs. On May 16, 2013, in the Instituto Departamental de Oriente (I.D.O.), an environment of happiness and festivity was everywhere because of the Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) graduation held for 873 students from five schools: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Instituto Cosme García C. Escuela Gabriela Mistral Escuela Luis Gamero Escuela Adventista Maranatha Centro de Educación Básico Francisco Morazán The students also received basketballs, soccer balls, and stocked pencil bags as graduation gifts. The kids demonstrated their gratitude with many artistic acts, including folkloric dance, modern dances, and mime acts.
