TEMPTATIONS

The temptations that our Lord Jesus
Christ confronts actually look good. We,
ourselves, challenge God in the same manner
when we ask Him to make things easier for us,
since He has the power to do so. Why don't you
make this person that makes my life miserable
disappear? Why don't you cure me from this
disease? Why don't you grant me what I ask for?
What the devil asks from Jesus, is not something
that is out of his reach. He can turn stones into
bread, He can jump from high above, knowing
that God will protect Him, He can be the King of
the World. He can do all that. He can make His
Mission the easiest. He can say: ¨You are now
saved and I shall go with my Father to enjoy the
Heavens¨. He could have done that without
having to go through the crucifixion. But
overcame the temptation, to be in solidarity with
us and He suffered what humanity suffers, for
not overcoming our own temptations.
The temptations we face every day are
very appealing: Easy triumph, paying someone
off to be spared of grueling procedures, copying
in exams to avoid having to study, appearing to
be busy so we won't have to help those who seek
favors, selling drugs to make money faster, etc..
All temptation is very appealing, but the
consequences are disastrous, even fatal. All sin
originates from the temptation of Adam and Eve:
Wanting to be like God. Which is so good that
even Jesus himself invites us to be as perfect as
our heavenly Father. The downside is wanting to
be like God, putting God aside. This is the source
of all sin. When we forget about God and make
the wrong decisions, the consequences are
extremely damaging.
Fasting, penance and charity, strengthen
our spirit to overcome temptation. Seize this Lent
to accomplish this.

Las tentaciones que confronta Nuestro
Señor Jesucristo en realidad parecen buenas.
Nosotros mismos retamos a Dios de la misma
manera cuando le pedimos que nos haga las
cosas más fáciles, ya que El tiene el poder para
hacerlo. ¿Por qué no desapareces a esta persona
que me hace la visa imposible? ¿Por qué no me
curas de esta enfermedad? ¿Por qué no me
concedes lo que te pido? Lo que le pide el
Demonio a Jesús, no es algo que esté fuera de su
alcance. Puede convertir las piedras en pan,
puede lanzarse dese lo alto, sabiendo que Dios le
protegerá, puede ser el Rey del Mundo. Todo
eso lo puede hacer. Hacer su Misión de lo más
fácil. Puede decir: ¨Ya están salvados y ya me
voy con mi Padre a disfrutar del Cielo¨. Pudo
haberlo hecho sin tener que pasar por la
crucifixión. Pero venció la tentación de no
hacerse solidario con nosotros y padeció lo que
la humanidad padece por no haber vencido
nuestras propias tentaciones.
Las tentaciones que confrontamos día a
día son muy atractivas… El triunfo fácil,
evitarnos trámites penosos mediante una
¨mordida¨, el copiar en los exámenes para no
tener que estudiar, el hacernos los disimulados
o los ocupados para no ayudar a quién nos
solicita un favor. El vender drogas para mejorar
nuestra economía de manera más fácil, etc.
Toda tentación es muy atractiva, pero las
consecuencias son nefastas y hasta mortales.
Todo pecado se origina de esa tentación de Adán
y Eva: Querer ser como Dios. Lo cual es tan
bueno que hasta Jesús mismo nos invita a que
seamos tan perfectos como nuestro Padre
Celestial es Perfecto. Lo malo, es querer ser
como Dios, haciendo a un lado a Dios. Este es el
origen de todo pecado. Cuando nosotros nos
olvidamos de Dios y tomamos las decisiones
equivocadas
y
las
consecuencias
son
tremendamente dañinas.
El ayuno, la penitencia y la caridad,
fortalecen nuestro espíritu para poder vencer las
tentaciones. Aprovechemos esta Cuaresma para
lograrlo.
Saint Valentine, officially
known as Saint Valentine of
Rome, is a third-century Roman
saint widely celebrated on
February 14 and commonly
associated with "courtly love."
Although not much of
St. Valentine's life is reliably
known, and whether or not the stories involve two different
saints by the same name is also not officially decided, it is
highly agreed that St. Valentine was martyred and then
buried on the Via Flaminia to the north of Rome.
In 1969, the Roman Catholic Church removed St.
Valentine from the General Roman Calendar, because so
little is known about him. However, the church still
recognizes him as a saint, listing him in the February 14
spot of Roman Martyrolgy.
The legends attributed to the mysterious saint are
as inconsistent as the actual identification of the man.
One common story about St. Valentine is that in
one point of his life, as the former Bishop of Terni, Narnia
and Amelia, he was on house arrest with Judge Asterius.
While discussing religion and faith with the Judge,
Valentine pledged the validity of Jesus. The judge
immediately put Valentine and his faith to the test.
St. Valentine was presented with the judge's blind
daughter and told to restore her sight. If he succeeded,
the judge vowed to do anything for Valentine. Placing his
hands onto her eyes, Valentine restored the child's vision.
Judge Asterius was humbled and obeyed
Valentine's requests. Asterius broke all the idols around
his house, fasted for three days and became baptized,
along with his family and entire 44 member household.
The now faithful judge then freed all of his
Christian inmates.
St. Valentine was later arrested again for
continuing to try to convert people to Christianity. He was
sent to Rome under the emperor Claudius Gothicus
(Claudius II). According to the popular hagiographical
identity, and what is believed to be the first representation
of St. Valentine, the Nuremberg Chronicle, St. Valentine
was a Roman priest martyred during Claudius' reign. The
story tells that St. Valentine was imprisoned for marrying
Christian couples and aiding Christians being persecuted
by Claudius in Rome. Both acts were considered serious
crimes. A relationship between the saint and emperor
began to grow, until Valentine attempted to convince
Claudius of Christianity. Claudius became raged and
sentenced Valentine to death, commanding him to
renounce his faith or be beaten with clubs and beheaded.
St. Valentine refused to renounce his faith and
Christianity and was executed outside the Flaminian Gate
on February 14, 269. However, other tales of St.
Valentine's life claim he was executed either in the year
269, 270, 273 or 280. Other depictions of St. Valentine's
arrests tell that he secretly married couples so husbands
wouldn't have to go to war. Another variation of the legend
of St. Valentine says he refused to sacrifice to pagan
gods, was imprisoned and while imprisoned he healed the
jailer's blind daughter. On the day of his execution, he left
the girl a note signed, "Your Valentine."

En 2014, el papa Francisco decidió participar de la
celebración de San Valentín, en un intento por devolverle
el sentido religioso a esta festividad surgida en principio
para contrarrestar a las paganas lupercales.
LA LEYENDA.San Valentín era un sacerdote que, hacia el siglo
III, ejercía en Roma. Gobernaba el emperador Claudio II,
quien decidió prohibir la celebración de matrimonios para
los jóvenes, porque en su opinión los solteros sin familia
eran mejores soldados, ya que tenían menos ataduras.
El sacerdote consideró que el decreto era injusto y
desafió al emperador. Celebraba en secreto matrimonios
para jóvenes enamorados (de ahí se ha popularizado que
San Valentín sea el patrón de los enamorados). El
emperador Claudio II se enteró y como san Valentín
gozaba de un gran prestigio en Roma, el emperador lo
llamó al palacio. San Valentín aprovechó aquella ocasión
para hacer proselitismo del cristianismo. Aunque en un
principio Claudio II mostró interés, el ejército y el
gobernador de Roma, llamado Calpurnio, lo persuadieron
para quitárselo de la cabeza.
El emperador Claudio dio entonces orden de que
encarcelasen a Valentín. Entonces, el oficial Asterius,
encargado de encarcelarlo, quiso ridiculizar y poner a
prueba a Valentín. Lo retó a que devolviese la vista a una
hija suya, llamada Julia, que nació ciega. Valentín aceptó
y, en nombre del Señor, le devolvió la vista.
Este hecho convulsionó a Asterius y su familia,
quienes se convirtieron al cristianismo. De todas formas,
Valentín siguió preso y el débil emperador Claudio
finalmente ordenó que lo martirizaran y ejecutaran el 14 de
febrero del año 270. La joven Julia, agradecida al santo,
plantó un almendro de flores rosadas junto a su tumba. De
ahí que el almendro sea símbolo de amor y amistad
duraderos.

EUCHARISTIC THURSDAY AND WAY OF THE CROSS
FRIDAY DURING LENT
Every Thursday of Lent at 7:00 pm we will have a Holy
Hour before the Blessed Sacrament at St. Joseph Church and both
Missions. The same goes for all Fridays of Lent. There will be
the bilingual prayer of the Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. at St.
Joseph’s Church and both Missions.
FINANCE COUNCIL MEMBERS.-
The St. Joseph Parish Finance Council is in need of
more members who are willing to commit some time and
effort in the service of the business needs of the Parish.
The Finance Council makes recommendations to
our pastor on financial matters, including budgeting
operations, repairs, maintenance, and improvements. This
is especially important as we progress in building the
Parish Center. There are four to six meetings per year.
Members should be competent in one or more of
the following areas: budgeting, property management,
personnel
management,
business
administration,
accounting, or civil law. Interested parishioners should
contact the Parish Office or Fr. Jorge.
BOOK KEEPER NEEDED.-
St. Joseph Parish is in need of a part-time full
charge bookkeeper. Must be computer literate. Excel
experience is mandatory.

Santísimo Sacramento tanto en la Parroquia
como en las Misiones al igual que todos los
Viernes de Cuaresma tendremos el rezo bilingüe
del Via Crucis a las 7:00 p.m. en la Parroquia y
en las Misiones.
MIEMBROS PARA EL CONSEJO DE FINANZAS.El Consejo de Finanzas de la Parroquia
de San José necesita de nuevos miembros que
se comprometan en tiempo y esfuerzo al
servicio de las necesidades financieras de la
Parroquia.
El
Consejo
de
Finanzas
hace
recomendaciones a nuestro Párroco en asuntos
financieros,
incluyendo
presupuesto,
operaciones, reparaciones, mantenimiento y
mejoras. Esto es especialmente importante en
tanto que estamos en el proceso de construir el
Centro Parroquial. Son cuatro o cinco reuniones
al año.
Los miembros deben ser competentes en
una o más de las siguientes áreas: Presupuesto,
administración de propiedades, manejo de
personal,
administración
de
negocios,
contabilidad o leyes civiles. Los feligreses
interesados deben contactar al Padre Jorge.
