A Reflection by Deacon Paul:
Un Relación de Pacto
A Covenant Relationship
In our readings this weekend we learn that God created
a covenant relationship with His people through
Moses. Moses then had several animals sacrificed and
their blood sprinkled on the people as a sign of
agreement with the covenant. A covenant is an
agreement between two parities. In the covenant
established with Moses God promised to watch over His people,
the Hebrew nation, and the Hebrews pledged to be faithful to
God. In the New Testament Jesus came to renew the covenant
and sacrificed himself offering His body and His blood as a sign
of that new covenant. At the Last Supper he gave us the bread
and the wine to become His body and His blood to renew the
covenant. Each time we partake of the bread and wine made
into the body and blood of Jesus we renew the covenant first
made to Moses then made by Jesus to us. When we receive the
Body and Blood of Jesus we come into full communion with
Jesus and what He taught us during His brief ministry. Each time
we receive the body and blood of Jesus we pledge ourselves to
respect the covenant and to be faithful to God by following His
commandments and He will be faithful to us. The Eucharist is an
everlasting expression of God’s presence with us through His
