Mainstage
T
he 2010-2011 Mainstage Season shined with stunning productions, Subscriber
growth, and single ticket sales successes. Opening the season was The Full Monty,
directed by Jerry Dixon. Receiving rave reviews from critics and audience members,
The Full Monty surpassed all revenue goals and has taken a place as one of Village Theatre’s
most successful productions. Coming to the stage for the holiday season was the new
musical Anne of Green Gables, which surpassed Million Dollar Quartet as the best selling
new musical in Village Theatre history. Complete with exquisite costumes, gorgeous sets,
and extraordinary song and dance brought by talented local performers, this new musical
charmed all who attended. The season continued with Anthony Shaffer’s Sleuth, directed
by Broadway veteran Martin Charnin. Rich with twists and turn (and a truly stunning set
covered in clever and detailed props), this intense battle of wits became the most successful
non-musical play in Village Theatre history. The second new musical of our Mainstage season,
Iron Curtain, combined the great era of Broadway’s razzle dazzle with Soviet propaganda
in a hilarious plot full of great characters and memorable tunes. The season closed with a
riveting powerhouse production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, directed
by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey. Set with dusty air pierced by surveilling
searchlights, this visionary production held true to the authors’ intent, while bringing the
show an immediacy and vitality that would inspire audiences to see the timeless story with
fresh eyes. It was a production that many have said they will not soon forget.

nurtures writers and composers through
the full developmental process from
first table reading to full-scale premiere
production—two new works each season
are part of Village Theatre’s five show
line-up alongside the classics.

With the re-opening of First Stage, home to Village Originals, we presented a reading of Take Me America and a developmental production of Cloaked,
which was part of the Annual Festival of New Musicals. The Festival is held each summer in August, drawing performers, directors, writers, composers,
and producers from all over the country, even internationally. This year, we were able to uitilize both venues in order to have five of the readings of new
musicals along with a more elaborate developmental production of Cloaked, a past festival favorite. The 11th Festival of New Musicals continued its
ongoing trend of 14% increased attendance.
Past Village Originals shows also saw success in the past year. Tony Award winning Million Dollar Quartet continued to perform on stages in New York,
Chicago, and London. Meanwhile, the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner, Next To Normal toured the country on its first national tour.

Youth Education
V
illage Theatre’s Youth Education and Community Outreach programs, served over 48,000 young
people, families, and educators throughout the Puget Sound. Available to all regardless of the
ability to pay, the programs provide healthy out-of-school-time activities, stimulate learning
through the arts in schools, provide access to the arts for underserved populations, develop young artists,
and promote skills for enriched and successful lives.
New Homes! Issaquah First Stage and Everett Second Stage and Youth Education Center became the new
homes for staff and students of the Youth Education and Community Outreach programs. These newly
renovated spaces provide room to grow as well as updated equipment and facilities that allow the program
to expand to the next level and serve more students.

Year-Round Out-of-School-Time Theatre Education Program: KIDSTAGE develops “Skills for Theatre….Skills for Life” through classes, camps, productions, and
apprenticeships. Over 2,500 students worked with professional artists, designers, and arts educators to build skills and explore all facets of theatre and musical theatre.
Village Theatre Institute: The Institute had its inaugural year in Everett. The Institute was created for students ready to study, train, and perform at an advanced level
throughout the school year.
One World Through Theatre: Teens from Issaquah KIDSTAGE and an orphanage in South Africa engaged in an interactive, multi media, online collaboration, and
artistic exchange. The project was inspired by performing and teaching artist Kathryn Van Meter, and was transformative for all involved.
Community Outreach
Cocoon House Program: A long-term relationship was forged with the Cocoon House in Everett, a shelter and residence for homeless and at risk teens. KIDSTAGE is
providing at no charge, year round “life skills through theatre” classes, full scholarships for regular KIDSTAGE programs, and season tickets to Village Theatre’s Mainstage
Season.
Pied Piper - Theatre for Young Audiences Series and Arts in Education Program: 21,807 students throughout East King, Snohomish, Island, and Skagit Counties,
joined their class or family to attend a Pied Piper presentation in a theatre in Bellevue, Everett, or Mount Vernon. Pied Piper brings literature to life on stage for schools
and the public at very affordable prices.
Pied Piper Outreach Workshops and Scholarship Program allowed 7,013 students exposure to the arts free of charge.
Capital Campaign
In 2005 Village Theatre developed a $12.5 million comprehensive capital campaign. To date, we have raised over $6.8 million. Currently, we are focusing
on Phases II and III of our campaign for the $3 million reconstruction of First Stage in Issaquah and the $3 million renovation of a former bank building
into the Second Stage and Youth Education Center in Everett.
First Stage
Second Stage and Youth Education Center
Beginning June 2010, Village Theatre rebuilt First Stage Theatre,
originally constructed in 1913. The work has maintained the historical
feel and façade, while incorporating state of the art production
equipment and modern patron amenities.
In partnership with the City of Everett, Village Theatre renovated and
recently opened Second Stage and Youth Education Center, a former
bank building next to the Everett Performing Arts Center. The building
is the new home to our Youth Education program and hundreds of
KIDSTAGE students, classes, rehearsals, workshops, and productions.
First Stage is home to our KIDSTAGE and Village Originals programs.
The new theatre has doubled the classroom space, incorporated a larger
lobby, expanded restrooms, and added dressing rooms. The stage was
expanded to incorporate wings for equipment, crew, and storage. A
new telescoping 193-seat system was installed to provide for maximum
flexibility, including cabaret productions, reception space, and special
event occasions, as well as a traditional theatre environment.

The facility has been designed to provide for unique and lively
entertainment possibilities. The intimate, flexible seating and
performance space will provide options for up to 170 theatre seats or
banquet style cabaret seating, offering a multiplicity of programming
and entertainment opportunities to visitors and the residents of this
community not possible in larger venues.

D
uring the 2010-2011 Season, Village Theatre produced five shows in its
Mainstage season with a total 364 performances. Continuing to feature two
new musicals in our season lineup, total attendance increased 7% despite tough
economic times. The Mainstage season saw attendance of 88,391 patrons in Issaquah and
52,033 in Everett. Total number of subscribers increased 2% in Issaquah, and decreased
slightly in Everett bringing the cumulative total number of subscribers to 18,068. Village
Theatre’s KIDSTAGE launched a new Institute program and over 2,200 enrollments in
KIDSTAGE classes and summer camps occurred during the year. Attendance at the 8
KIDSTAGE productions throughout the year was over 11,000. The Pied Piper program
presented 7 shows to schools groups and families and saw overall attendance of nearly
22,000. The Village Originals program, which continues to attract local, as well as, national
attention from writers and directors across the country, produced another successful
Festival of New Musical in the summer and also produced a developmental production of
a new musical at the newly renovated First Stage.
Total earned revenue from operations increased 9.4% and contributed support increased
6% from the prior year. Operating expenses increased 8.4% mainly due to increased
programming and labor costs. The combined efforts of a supportive community and a
creative and dedicated Village Theatre team were able to generate an operating surplus
before depreciation (a noncash expenditure) of $56,550. When combining operations and
capital campaign activity, the overall change in net assets was an increase of $403,880.
Beginning in 2005, the Theatre launched a capital and endowment fund campaign. The
campaign proceeds are being used to purchase land and build the new Technical Studios,
which house the scene, prop and paint shops, reconstruct First Stage, convert an Everett
City building into a theatre and education facility, provide financial stability by establishing
an endowment, retire the current mortgage and cover the cost of the campaign. The
campaign goal as of August 31, 2011 is $12.5 million. As of August 31, 2011 and 2010,
$6,858,338 and $6,236,769 respectively, had been pledged or given towards that goal. The
Craig and Joan Watjen Technical Studios were completed in 2007 and reconstruction of
First Stage was completed in March 2011. The Everett Youth Education Center is scheduled
to be completed late 2011.
