Do You Agree With Me?
When I was a boy growing up in
Philadelphia, my Dad was a fire captain who
worked second jobs to provide for our
family and make sure we had everything
that we needed. One of my Dad’s second
jobs involved working for a home
improvement contractor. When I was ten
years old, my Dad took me with him during
the summer to work as his helper. I
immediately loved working with my hands
and building things. I got a great sense of
satisfaction from seeing what I could do to
contribute to the renovation of someone’s
home. I guess this is what attracted me to
the home improvement industry forty-five
years ago. At an early age I learned the
value of money and a respect and appreciation for what I had to
do to earn it. Another lesson I learned was that if you were
willing to work hard enough for it, learn from your mistakes, take
some risks and learn to work smarter, you could pretty much
achieve whatever you wanted. Later, in a college economics class,
I learned about the American free enterprise system, the laws of
supply and demand and capitalism.
Growing up in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, it seemed that if
someone put their mind to it, worked hard, provided a quality
product or service at a fair price, they could improve their lot in
life and their family’s too. Think about that…what a great
opportunity we are afforded as citizens of the greatest country
on earth!
Nowadays, I’m concerned. As a businessman, entrepreneur
and employer, I see an ever increasing government role in many
facets of life that there never used to be. In fact, it seems that in
many ways, we are evolving into a society that thinks it is owed,
even entitled to, many things by and from our government. I don’t
agree. I know that the larger role government plays in our day to
day life, the more dependent and the less motivated we will be to
pursue the great American dreams and opportunities…the
virtually unlimited promise that played such a great role in
shaping our country and the lives of so many of our great
entrepreneurs, business people and leaders.
This trend concerns me. Thomas Jefferson
wrote in the Declaration of Independence that
we were “endowed by our Creator with
certain unalienable rights…that among these
are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness….
That to secure these Rights, Governments are
instituted among Men, deriving their just
Powers from the Consent of the Governed,
that whenever any Form of Government
becomes destructive to these Ends, it is the
Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and
to institute new Government, laying its
foundation on such Principles and organizing
its Powers in such Form, as to them shall
seem most likely to effect their Safety and
Happiness. . . .”
At great risk, our founding fathers
established a free society where government
had a very limited role. The rest is up to us and the opportunities
we make…not the government! Today, we have a government
that is out of control, spending obscene amounts of money that
we don’t have and mortgaging the future of our country under
the guise that government can do it better. Congress has
forgotten that they derive their powers from the “consent of the
governed”. Do you agree? If so, speak up. Let your voice be
heard. Call, write and e-mail your representatives…. and
exercise your right to vote each election day!

Window Maintenance Tip
Tax Credits
Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009,
energy efficient qualifying products are eligible for a 15% tax
credit up to a maximum of $1,500. The good news is that

If you have horizontally gliding windows in your
home, you may find that they don’t glide as easily
as they did when they were new. Dirt build-up, and
the resulting friction it causes, is the culprit. This
situation can be easily rectified in just a few short
minutes. First, take a damp cloth and clean the
bottom tracks in the window frame of any
accumulated dirt. Soft Scrub brand cleaner on a
damp cloth along with a little elbow grease will
remove any built up dirt or black marks caused by
abrasion. Once clean, take a spray bottle of Armor
All brand automotive protectant and apply it
liberally to a soft cloth. Then take the cloth and
wipe the top and bottom tracks of the window
frame in the area where the sash slides. On
Renewal by Andersen® gliding windows, this
works particularly well when also applied to the
beige colored rubber weather stripping on the top,
bottom and sides of the gliding sash. Within a few
minutes you’ll have windows that glide like new.
Repeat this process every 3-4 months or as
needed. ■

Orange County’s Best Chili Recipe
Football season is here! There’s nothing like sitting down to watch
your favorite team and digging into a bowl of delicious chili. If your
taste buds are beginning to tingle, here’s the recipe to make…..Carl &
Sam’s Award Winning Chili. Carl Formato and Sam Manfer are two loyal
DIAL ONE customers with their culinary juices flowing and a flair for the
spicy things in life. Their chili was voted best of the best at a recent
Orange County Chili cook off! If you want to taste this award winning
chili, visit our Open House on September 26th. If you can’t wait until
then, get out your apron and go to work. Here’s the recipe:
Ingredients:
2 medium sized yellow onions, finely chopped
Antica Italia Extra Virgin Olive Oil (evoo)
1/2 red pepper, finely chopped
Celery, finely chopped to make 1 cup
2 Tablespoons Formato Brothers Hot Pepper Spread
(available @ www.formatobrothers.com)
1 lb hot or spicy sausage
2 cans (6 oz) tomato paste (with or without seasonings)
3 cups water
1 can diced tomatoes (15 oz with or without seasonings)
1 can black beans (15 oz) drained & rinsed
1 can kidney beans (15 oz) drained & rinsed
2 Tablespoon Alessi Sea Salt
1 Teaspoon ground black pepper
1 Tablespoon garlic powder
2 Tablespoons oregano
Sauté the following in Extra Virgin Olive Oil (evoo):
onions, red pepper, celery (no leaves), 2 Tbs Formato
Brothers Hot Pepper Spread.
Split the sausage casing lengthwise; remove casing.
Use the back end of a knife to scrape the casing to
remove the sausage. Use a spatula to break the sausage
into manageable little pieces.
Add the sausage to the sauté pan while vegetables are
heating. Cook over low heat until sausage is almost
cooked.
Stir in 2 cans tomato paste. Transfer all to a large
pot. Add 3 cups water. Stir & simmer on a low flame.
Drain & rinse black beans & kidney beans. Add to
mixture in large pot. Add diced tomatoes. Stir all together
& cook a little while longer. Add the following in this order:
sea salt, ground black pepper, garlic powder, oregano.
Cook over low heat for 30 minutes. Add a little water as
needed to adjust consistency to your liking.
Serve in cups or bowls with or without garnish, as desired: more chopped onions, Reggiano, Parmesan,
Cheddar or Manchego cheese. Whatever cheese you find in
your refrigerator will work. Serve with a crisp green salad,
some crusty Italian bread, a glass of red wine, such as
Cabernet or Pinot Noir, and enjoy a flavorful, delicious
meal. Buon Appetito! This may be made a day before
serving & then reheated.
