Perugia
THE PERUGIA DISTRICT
and the town of Gubbio
The area displays many of the key features of the
region: rolling hills and beautiful old towns where the
relationship between man and nature has always been
very solid and the landscape is deeply civilised. The
cultural hub of the Umbria Region and destination
of tourists from all over the world is Perugia: city of
art, culture and tradition. Perugia, the great “Guelph
citadel”, lies in the very centre of the region, with its
5 historic districts enclosed within the Etruscan walls.
The Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral and the Palazzo
Comunale frame one of the most beautiful piazzas in
Italy.
The area of Gubbio and Gualdo is mostly mountainous,
enclosed between the Apennines and the Tiber Valley,
rich in art treasures and natural wonders where history,
culture and landscape live together in perfect harmony.
Gubbio is an authentic masterpiece of medieval
civilisation and thirteenth-fourteenth century society.
Its folk pageants including the famous Festa dei Ceri
are famed.
THE EXCELLENCIES
OF THE TERRITORY
Among the most significant events, it is worth
mentioning music festivals such as Umbria Jazz
and Sagra Musicale Umbra, and the fine food
fair Eurochocolate. A number of exhibitions are
also organised, such as the one on Perugino and
the one on Signorelli, which have drawn great
audiences. The Gubbio district features a wide
number of typical products, among which the
prized white truffle, the most sought after ground
tuber.

Assisi Resort
The tourist district of Assisi, east of Perugia, includes
the boroughs of Assisi, Bastia Umbra, Bettona,
Cannara. The area is bounded on the north-east by the
Monte Subasio and south-east by the hills that separate
it from Tiber Valley.
A fundamental stage on a spiritual itinerary in Umbria
on Saint Francis' footsteps is the town of Assisi which
offers the visitor nature reserves such as the ones
in the Monte Subasio Park. The visitor can already
glimpse form a distance Assisi's multitude of churches,
bell towers and houses, still fenced in the circle of its
ancient medieval walls. The Assisi district also includes
other small art gems such as Bettona with its scenic
panoramic views and Cannara, ancient medieval hamlet.
Another jewel in Umbria's crown is Spello, which as
well as being listed among the most beautiful hamlets
of Italy, is renowned for its colourful floral display of
Corpus Domini, for the weekly markets and folklore
events. It belongs to the "National Association of olive oil
towns".

THE EXCELLENCIES
OF THE TERRITORY
The worldwide famous Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo
The Orvieto tourist district, in the south-western region
of Umbria, in the province of Terni, includes 13 small
towns, the largest and most prestigious of which is
the town of Orvieto. Characterised by a landscape of
volcanic origin, half way between Florence and Rome,
the district is well served by fast communication
routes (train and Autostrada del Sole). In an area
where rolling hills give way to plains, basalt and
tufaceous formations, caves and underground tunnels,
the tourist can enjoy unspoiled nature, with forests
and Mediterranean vegetation and visit a number of
picturesque hamlets, ancient farmhouses, castles and
towns of medieval origin.
One should not miss the Duomo d’Orvieto, a
masterpiece of the Italian Gothic, which dates back
to 1263, with its marvellous façade and its rich
ornaments and internal chapels. Another must-see
jewel is the unusual Saint Patrick's Well, built in 1527
on a design by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.
represents an admirable example today of the conversion
of an ancient 13th century historical building into a
modern, high-tech, state-of-the-art conference centre.

Spoleto
THE DISTRICT
of Spoleto
The region of the Spoleto tourist district offers to
tourists extraordinary natural beauty spots such as the
springs of the Clitunno, and fascinating historical town
centres, such as Spoleto, which preserve their wholly
intact medieval structure and host cultural events of
great appeal.
The area, interesting from a historical, artistic and
archaeological point of view, also has great mystical
and spiritual appeal, as witnessed by the numerous
abbeys and Romanesque parish churches that stand
next to imposing Roman age monuments.
Termed an “austere and splendid city”, Spoleto is
one of the main tourist centres in Umbria thanks to
its millennia of history. Spoleto was a Roman colony,
then became the capital of the powerful Longobard
Dukedom, an ever-growing city until today, with the
foundation of important institutions such as the
Centre for Diagnostics of Cultural Assets and the
National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto. Among the
numerous monuments one must not miss the Roman
Theatre dating back to the early years of the Empire,
the Amphitheatre of the 2nd century b.C., the Town Hall
(13th century), the 17th century Palazzo Ancaiani, the
Albornoziana Castle, the Tower Bridge.
THE EXCELLENCIES
OF THE TERRITORY
The most important cultural event, which has made
Spoleto world famous, is the Festival of the Two Worlds,
of music, art, culture and theatre.

Terni
THE DISTRICT
of Terni
The main town of the district is Terni, capital town of the
province of the same name, whose foundation dates back to
the 7th century b.C. and features remarkable and historical
heritage: Palazzo Spada, the Roman Amphitheatre, used
nowadays for shows and events, and Romanesque and
Gothic churches.
Among the most noteworthy tourist destination it is worth
mentioning the Marmore Waterfall, grand Roman-age
hydraulic work, the Piediluco lake that represents, together
with the surrounding forests, one of the most enchanting
and inspiring landscapes in the whole of Umbria and hosts
each year world-class canoeing competitions. It is also worth
mentioning the splendid archaeological site of Carsulae, of
Roman age. A unique region, far from the commonplace,
which includes also the Nera River Park which, among lush
mountains criss-crossed by rivers and streams, is traversed
by ancient paths leading to tiny medieval hamlets perched
on hills of olive groves and vineyards.
THE EXCELLENCIES
OF THE TERRITORY
Among the most significant events it is worth mentioning
those connected to Valentine Events held in the week of
14 February and devoted to the Saint of Love and Patron
Saint of the city.
