The cultural hub of the Umbria Region and destination of tourists from all over the world is Perugia: city of art, culture and tradition. Perugia, the great “Guelph citadel”, lies in the very centre of the region, with its 5 historic districts enclosed within the Etruscan walls. The Fontana Maggiore, the Cathedral and the Palazzo Comunale frame one of the most beautiful piazzas in Italy. The area of Gubbio and Gualdo is mostly mountainous, enclosed between the Apennines and the Tiber Valley, rich in art treasures and natural wonders where history, culture and landscape live together in perfect harmony. Gubbio is an authentic masterpiece of medieval civilisation and thirteenth-fourteenth century society. Its folk pageants including the famous Festa dei Ceri are famed. The area is bounded on the north-east by the Monte Subasio and south-east by the hills that separate it from Tiber Valley. A fundamental stage on a spiritual itinerary in Umbria on Saint Francis' footsteps is the town of Assisi which offers the visitor nature reserves such as the ones in the Monte Subasio Park. The visitor can already glimpse form a distance Assisi's multitude of churches, bell towers and houses, still fenced in the circle of its ancient medieval walls. The Assisi district also includes other small art gems such as Bettona with its scenic panoramic views and Cannara, ancient medieval hamlet. The Assisi district offers interesting fine wine and food routes, such as the Wine Road of the Canticle. Characterised by a landscape of volcanic origin, half way between Florence and Rome, the district is well served by fast communication routes (train and Autostrada del Sole). In an area where rolling hills give way to plains, basalt and tufaceous formations, caves and underground tunnels, the tourist can enjoy unspoiled nature, with forests and Mediterranean vegetation and visit a number of picturesque hamlets, ancient farmhouses, castles and towns of medieval origin. One should not miss the Duomo d’Orvieto, a masterpiece of the Italian Gothic, which dates back to 1263, with its marvellous façade and its rich ornaments and internal chapels. The area, interesting from a historical, artistic and archaeological point of view, also has great mystical and spiritual appeal, as witnessed by the numerous abbeys and Romanesque parish churches that stand next to imposing Roman age monuments. Termed an “austere and splendid city”, Spoleto is one of the main tourist centres in Umbria thanks to its millennia of history. Spoleto was a Roman colony, then became the capital of the powerful Longobard Dukedom, an ever-growing city until today, with the foundation of important institutions such as the Centre for Diagnostics of Cultural Assets and the National Museum of the Duchy of Spoleto. Among the numerous monuments one must not miss the Roman Theatre dating back to the early years of the Empire, the Amphitheatre of the 2nd century b.C., the Town Hall (13th century), the 17th century Palazzo Ancaiani, the Albornoziana Castle, the Tower Bridge. Among the most noteworthy tourist destination it is worth mentioning the Marmore Waterfall, grand Roman-age hydraulic work, the Piediluco lake that represents, together with the surrounding forests, one of the most enchanting and inspiring landscapes in the whole of Umbria and hosts each year world-class canoeing competitions. It is also worth mentioning the splendid archaeological site of Carsulae, of Roman age. A unique region, far from the commonplace, which includes also the Nera River Park which, among lush mountains criss-crossed by rivers and streams, is traversed by ancient paths leading to tiny medieval hamlets perched on hills of olive groves and vineyards.
