India and United Arab Emirates (UAE).
1.2
Added Value
As environmental issues continue to change with
increasing speed, the requirements which buildings
must meet in terms of sustainability and costeffectiveness become ever more demanding. Our focus
is in creating structural designs using innovative
technologies to deliver built environments that best suit
our clients’ needs, with the emphasis on buildability,
sustainability, flexibility and safety. We ensure that the

Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) &
Building Information Modelling (BIM)
Building Information Models (BIM) are increasingly
being used by our experts to develop our projects.
Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) is an effective step
forward in creating efficient building designs. The VDC
approach which has been developed in cooperation
with Stanford University and the University of Delft,
focuses on product, process and organisation, before
the actual detailed design is carried out. Royal
HaskoningDHV uses integrated rooms (I Rooms), in
which we stimulate the integrated approach using
virtual models to create the most efficient design.
This approach has advantages such as time
optimisation, cost effectiveness and risk reduction,
without affecting the quality of the finished product. It
leads to a smooth integration process with all
stakeholders and disciplines within the design team.

Specialties of our Structural Design Advisory Group
2.1
Tall / High Rise Buildings
Tall buildings are no longer exceptions; they are
gradually becoming the preferred modality of a vertical
city.
In the Netherlands the opportunities for high rise
construction are extremely limited due to small
available footprints and unfavourable ground
conditions, often resulting in challenging slender
designs. Royal HaskoningDHV have been responsible
for the design of approximately 50% of all tall buildings
in the country and as as such, we are well adapt to
overcoming all challenges that come with high rise
design and construction.
Economic structural designs
Tall buildings have unique challenges. Iconic
architecture, mixed programmes (residential, office,
hotel, retail and parking) are gradually finding new ways
into vertical cities. As a result, high rise construction is
fast becoming the main form of urban design to
overcome the ever increasing problem of available
land.
We believe that sustainability, efficiency as well as
innovative technologies and fast construction methods
should be fully integrated into a structural design to
achieve an economic building.
Innovations
Traditionally, tall buildings are constructed in either
concrete, steel or a combination of both. A major
challenge can be finding economy in design due to the
large loads that need to be supported. However our
structural experts are constantly exploring new ways of
constructing lighter, more cost effective buildings and
are currently developing a new ultra light system for tall
buildings.
HaskoningDHV have been the structural designers. In
2013 ‘New Babylon’ was a European finalist. In 2014
‘The Rotterdam’ was winner. At the time CTBUH
stated: “De Rotterdam is an exercise in formal
interpretation that is at once reminiscent of an imported
mid-century American skyscraper, but epitomizes the
off-center experimentalism of modern Dutch art of the
foregoing century. Though it is the largest building in
the Netherlands, its mass is broken down into three
interconnected mixed-use towers”.
Available project reference sheets of our high rise
buildings are:
1) The Rotterdam, Rotterdam (Winner CTBUH Best
Tall Building Europe 2014 / In the top 10 of “Most
Glamorous Buildings Around The World”);
2) New Babylon, The Hague (Winner in the category

3) New Orleans, Rotterdam;
4) Het Strijkijzer, The Hague (Emporis Skyscraper

In High rise design, Architects are constantly pushing
the boundaries, and the requirements for maximising
internal space can be challenging for the structural
designer. To combat this, Royal HaskoningDHV has
taken the innovative approach to use the building
façade as load bearing element.

Urban development / High Rise Buildings
In a densely populated country like the Netherlands,
particularly in the inner cities, relatively small buildings
sites, deep basements and high groundwater levels are
typical circumstances that a structural engineer has to
manage.
Geotechnical engineering, excavations
One of the larger risks associated with building
construction is often uncertainties surrounding the
ground conditions. Early identification of potential soil
related problems is essential as it allows these risks to
be managed effectively thus avoiding costly and time
consuming delays during the construction process.
Royal HaskoningDHV’s geotechnical experts ensure
that these ground related risks are managed effectively
at an early stage of the project.
Our team of structural and geotechnical engineers has
extensive experience in a variety of international
projects. A complete geotechnical service from
inception reports, risk assessments and desk studies,
through to complex numerical analyses, construction
control and forensic services can be delivered.
Structural expertise in a wide range of projects
The structural consultants of Royal HaskoningDHV
have experience in a wide range of projects.
Innovative structural expertise has been employed in
numerous residential, commercial, hospitality, leisure,
entertainment and health care projects. We also
specialize in the design of complex, mixed use innercity projects.
In the public sector buildings such as governmental
offices, city halls, courts, museums, theatres and
concert halls demand intelligent and sustainable
structural solutions. To reduce noise levels and
vibrations often special techniques are integrated in our
structural designs.
Hospitals, laboratories, research centres, clean rooms,
data centres, university buildings and transport hubs
like airports and rail stations also have their own
structural challenges and solutions.
The structural designers of Royal HaskoningDHV are a
strong partner in realizing projects.

Redevelopment / Low weight buildings
As our world is continuously changing, it is becoming
apparent that a sustainable future is essential for future
generations.
Old, delapetated buildings are very often overlooked as
an opportunity for redevelopment. However we have
been discovering that many of these buildings have
excellent potential for a second life. Examples of this
are Industrial buildings which are transformed into
apartment blocks or office buildings. In addition, there is
also the potential for Office buildings of the past
becoming hotels of the future.
Structures have a 2
nd
life
Royal HaskoningDHV have been designing building
structures for over 130 years. We believe that having
this knowledge gives us excellent opportunities for the
future.
Example of a very low weight building: De Karel
Doorman
A reference project for very low weight building is ‘De
Karel Doorman, Rotterdam’, whereby sixteen
residential storeys have been built on the existing Ter
Meulen building. This combination of low weight and
multi-storey building is unique. In order to optimise
comfort, very specific knowledge of acoustics,
vibrations and heat management is necessary.
Floors, ceilings and partition walls are acoustically
disconnected, creating an entirely separate box-in-box
system. The required expertise was developed in
partnership by Royal HaskoningDHV and TNO.

Specialism & Innovations
Façade retention and temporary supports are typical
themes in heritage protected buildings. With advanced
modern calculation techniques and knowledge of older
methods of construction, we are well equipped to
provide these older, historical buildings a second life.
The knowledge and experience of our staff is the key to
realize the goals of our clients and partners in structural
projects. Permanent education based on a university
degree in structural engineering and developing
personal skills through the years are the best base for
every project.
Low weight building
Basics of structural design
Low weight building is often more sustainable than high
weight building. Fewer materials are used, enabling
more efficient transport management and more building
options: more floors can be built in the same area. Low
weight building also opens doors to other options, like
building on floating structures or on top of existing
buildings.
Structures designed by Royal HaskoningDHV’s
structural designers are based on the latest theoretical
knowledge, building codes and extensive experience.
Our designs are optimised using available materials
like: steel, concrete, timber, stone, glass and
composites. Designs are based on traditional and/or
advanced, innovative building techniques and
technologies, depending on situation and location.
Instead of working with standard concrete and steel
structures, timber and steel structures with leightweight
floor types can be practical and and economic
solutions. The weight of these structures can be
reduced to 20% of a traditional structure. Extra effort is
needed to address the demands on acoustics, vibration
and fire.
Structural Design

The essence of structural design is connecting the
demands of geometry, materials (concrete, steel,
woord) and loads (gravity, wind, seismic).

After my study at the University of Eindhoven, faculty
Building Technology, I started my professional career
as a structural engineer at Corsmit Consulting
Engineers in The Hague, the Netherlands. Within a
couple of years I became partner and later director of
the office. In 2007 Corsmit was taken over by Royal
Haskoning, which merged with DHV in 2012.
As a professional structural engineer and structural
designer I was involved in many important building
projects in the Netherlands and abroad. (Saoudi Arabia,
St. Maarten, Accra, Great Britain, Dubai, Bahrein,
Denmark.) For many of these project I was the person
finally responsible for the structural design. Now, within
Royal HaskoningDHV, the management tasks are done
by other people and I am able to focus on the structural
design and engineering and on the construction
aspects.
As Director Advisory Group Structural Design, I am
responsible for all structural design activities in the
business line Buildings of Royal HaskoningDHV. In the
Netherlands the Advisory Group (about 75 staff) is
located in the offices in Amsterdam, Eindhoven,
Nijmegen and Rotterdam. Together we work with
passion on innovative sustainable projects.
Name: John Kraus
Position: Leading
Professional
I started my career as structural engineer and became
a leader of professionals. Together we designed many
iconic buildings for a large amount of clients, both
private and public.
In 1985 I became co-owner of an engineering firm of
about 200 people. In 1998 this firm became part of
DHV. End 2004 the integration started of all the DHV
parts within building and industry under the same
name. The structural department came under my
supervision. After 5 years of success I was appointed
as leading professional in 2009.

As principal structural engineer I make structural
designs for buildings and supervise all structural
engineering until completion of the building. I like the
challenge of finding the simplest structure for the most
complex projects which ensures the best integral
design. For this purpose, it is often necessary to apply
innovative construction techniques.
My professional experience is in the martket sectors
public, education, health care, multinationals and
private. I have experience with the redevelopment of
(listed) buildings.
Clients consult me for design reviews and second
opinions. This way construction costs were optimized
and structural problems were prevented. I also have
extensive experience with damage inspections and
construction defect analysis.
I am doing research on structural safety and the
behaviour of concrete walls in high-rise. On both
subjects I have written several publications.
