Body Wellness® Family Fit Launches at the J

message from
the executive
Our transition from the Kaplan JCC in West Palm to the north,
west and south is proceeding as announced. Plans to expand the
Hochman JCC in Boynton are underway and scheduled to be
completed by January 2010. (You’ve probably read about much
of this in the Palm Beach Post and Sun-Sentinel.)
Camp Shalom and Camp Shalom Jr. are back and better than
ever at our campuses in West Palm and Boynton Beach! Please
read the Camp Shalom story on
page 6 to learn about the great new
programs and enhancements we’re
offering campers this summer. We
think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
As you may know, we’re on a health
and wellness and “green” campaign.
We’re expanding our fitness offerings at the Hochman JCC in
Boynton to include Family Fit, a
training program run by a local company called Body Wellness that
Michelle G. Wasch works with the whole family at the
JCC Executive Director
same time. The company also offers
a “semi-private” track during which
two families can train together. Call the Hochman JCC at 561740-9000, or ask about it the next time you’re there.
We’ve also started a green market at the Hochman JCC that’s
open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Friday. Organic vegetables,
fruits, bakery items, plants, flowers, even a "doggy" bakery, are
among the products available. In conjunction with that, we’ve
partnered with Caroline Brito of Healthy World Organics to make
available to you her “Healthy Bags” of fresh organic fruits, vegetables, and herbs on a regular basis. Contact Lenore at 561740-9000, ext. 266 for more information. As part of our “green”
movement, we’re also starting a community garden where members can grow their own plants and veggies. For more information, please contact Jackie at 561-736-4756.
On a more serious note, the economy has forced more JCC families to seek financial assistance for our popular Chaverim aftercare program as well as for camp and pre-school. If we all stick
together, we can get through this tough economic time by helping each other out. A small donation to the Children’s
Scholarship Fund by all of our members will keep our kids in a
safe Jewish environment. To contribute, please contact Brooke
Kochman at 561-712-5251. You’ll be doing a wonderful mitzvah.
See you at the J!

amp Shalom received numerous praisefilled comments from parents, including
these: “It’s already wonderful, wouldn’t
change anything.” “I think this year was a
huge improvement over the last couple of
years.” “Camp Shalom Staff members
were great, much better than in previous
summers!” With (new Camp Director)
Rachel Fox running the camp this year there was a tremendous improvement. It was a very well run and organized camp
experience with wonderful new ideas implemented.” “(Camp
Director) Rachel (Fox) has truly turned the camp around in just
one year.”
C
Fox is flattered but not resting on her laurels. “I’m so appreciative of the great reviews parents gave Camp Shalom last summer,” Fox says, “but camp is going to be even better this summer. We’ve made improvements and added some great new
programs.”
The same is true for Camp Shalom and Camp Shalom Jr. at the
Hochman JCC in Boynton, beginning with the installation of
the incomparable Yale David as Camp Director. Yale, who is
known for running the J’s youth sports leagues, has been a fixture at the Hochman JCC since it opened 11 years ago. He’s
also served as Camp Shalom Sports Director for the past seven
years, taking sports camp enrollment from 15 campers in 2001
to 200 campers last summer.
The good times begin June 15 and run through Aug. 7.
(Although there is Summer Kickoff Camp and Summer Kickoff
Sports Camp from June 4 through June 12.)
“We’ve spent a lot of time and effort on improving an already
wonderful experience for your children,” Fox says, adding that
camp stalwarts P.J. Abbott and Asaf Lubezky have been
invaluable in helping create a stellar camp program.
“Everything that you love about the camp is back,” Fox says.
“And we’re really looking forward to spending the summer
with your children.” g

Rachel Fox at 561-712-5279, Yale David at 561-2593000, or visit our new website at campshalom.org.
camp shalom09
highlights
Aside from everything you loved last year,
Camp Shalom 2009 includes:
LUNCH IS INCLUDED! AT BOTH BRANCHES! This is such big news we had to announce it in
bold capital letters.
s
TAG Each camper will have the opportunity to
participate in the TAG initiative. Created by the
JCCA Mandel Center for Jewish Education. TAG is
an acronym for Torah (learning and living), Avodah
(service and spirituality) and Gemilut Chassadim
(acts of loving kindness), three encompassing values of Judaism. TAG initiatives add Jewish richness,
beauty, quality and meaning to our camps through
Jewish experiences and education.
s
One very cool improvement is the creation of Camp Shalom’s
own website, of which we are very proud. Campshalom.org will
provide you with all of the information you need about Camp
Shalom, and you can register online as well.
Explore the Hero in You! The theme of
camp this summer is “Explore the Hero in You!”
Each week a different Superhero is going to visit
camp to teach the Jewish value of the week.
s
Even though the JCC is phasing out activities at the Kaplan
JCC, this summer campers will enjoy access to the whole campus including the pool, tennis courts, gymnasium, sports fields
and the entire JCC building. And, as usual, campers will be
interacting with schlihot (emissaries) from Israel.
A new unit Kohavim (Stars), for all 4th-6th
graders, including more field trips and age-appropriate activities!
s
Fox, too, is taking great care in upgrading the staff from previous years. Before citing all the upgrades and improvements in
store for West Palm camp families, she wants to make it clear
that the West Palm Beach edition of Camp Shalom and Camp
Shalom Jr. will operate out of the Kaplan JCC as always, this
summer. “We’re not going anywhere—except to take your kids
on some great camp trips,” she says.
Circus Camp In small groups, circus campers
learn and practice the art of one of 15 circus acts,
including trick roller-skating, trapeze, fire-eating,
aerial ballet, mini-trampoline, juggling, and other
routines, then perform in front of an audience at the
end of the week-long session.
s
Yale is looking to transfer the success of his Sports Camp
model to improve General Camp this summer. “I’m planning
more specialties, more clinics, and more special events,” he
says, adding proudly that many of the coming summer’s staff
were former campers of his or have participated in his sports
programs at the J.
New and improved trips for Tzofim (teen
travel camp) including a Royal Caribbean Cruise,
and a stay at Sandpiper Club Med in Port St. Lucie!
s
Even though Yale is overseeing the entire camp this summer,
he promises that, “Sports camp will be as strong as ever with
better activities, clinics, and trips. Sports Campers in 4th-8th
grades are going to Atlanta and North Carolina, while Sports
Campers in 3rd-8th grade will be going to Tampa and
Orlando.” He adds that his new responsibilities also include
serving as Sports Director for the 3- and 4-year-olds in Camp
Shalom Jr.

VPK (Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten)
VPK gives 4 year-olds a jump start by preparing them for school and
enhancing their pre-reading, pre-math, language and social skills. By
developing the skills children need to become strong readers and students at an early age, children are more likely to be successful in school.
VPK classrooms offer high-quality programs that include high literacy
standards, developmentally appropriate curricula, manageable class
sizes, and qualified teachers. For more information, call 561-732-7620.

>>> Body Wellness®
Family Fit
Launches at the J
In conjunction with its emphasis on healthy living the Hochman JCC has
added to its already substantial menu of health and fitness programming an innovative way to workout called Family Fit. Offered by local
company Body Wellness®, this unique program is a personal training
regimen for the entire family. The only program of its kind, Body
Wellness® Family Fit helps families get healthy together with a comprehensive program that is simple and effective.
The program includes a nutritional component, which is a much over
looked aspect of American family dining. Families are taught to make
healthy selections, especially at lunch time when kids are usually eating
quick-fix, nutrient-poor fast foods. The program provides customized
fitness training, home exercise programs, and many other services.
Program creator and executive director Melissa Berkowitz says, “This
program addresses an area that American families need to focus on
together—their health and well being. The health habits that children
learn in their formative years stay with them throughout their lives.”
Berkowitz adds, “Life today is so hectic, and family life has become so
disjointed, that the program is a great way for families to bond and at
the same time learn to live healthier lives.”
The fun group family sessions are challenging, educational, motivating
and give the family the confidence to continue their healthy lifestyle.
The one-hour sessions are held indoors or outside when weather permits. The sessions include both cardiovascular and strength training
and are tailored to each individual’s fitness level and age. Sessions can
be scheduled up until 8 p.m. on weekdays as well as weekends. The program works with up to four family members, ages 5 and older.
Each program is tailored to each family’s specific needs and is closely
monitored by the trainer and director of the program. Trainers will
schedule appointments with families at their convenience. g
Program workshops will be held throughout the month providing
information and program demonstration. For more information, call
Andrea at the J at 561-736-4753.

The Fifth Diamond >>>
Holocaust survivor and author Irene Zisblatt to speak
at Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration
24 JCCONLINE.COM
D
espite incredible odds, Irene Weisberg Zisblatt
survived the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration
camp during WWII. Her mother gave her four
diamonds to be used to buy bread should she
ever find herself hungry during the war, but
those diamonds gave Irene Weisberg Zisblatt
the fortitude to survive the Holocaust. ''I cannot buy bread with your
diamonds, but as long as I am alive they will stay with me,'' she writes in
her memoir, The Fifth Diamond: The Story of Irene Weisberg Zisblatt.
Born Chana Seigelstein, Zisblatt lived in Hungary with her parents and
five siblings. In 1942, when she was 11, her mother, Rachel, sewed the
diamonds into the hem of her skirt before she was taken by the Nazis to
the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland. But it took
Zisblatt 50 years to overcome the terror and shame of her Holocaust
experience and speak about it
for the Survivors of the Shoah
Visual History Foundation,
and in Steven Spielberg’s
Oscar-winning documentary,
“The Last Days,” and also
finally write a memoir.
In The Fifth Diamond, written
with her friend Gail Ann Webb,
Zisblatt continues her quest
Irene Zisblatt
to rid the world of prejudice,
intolerance, and indifference. The title, coined by Webb, refers to
Zisblatt, because, Webb says, “God left the world the fifth diamond,
Irene, to tell a story of hope, love, courage…and of survival. A diamond
is indestructible, and so is Irene Weisberg Zisblatt.”
Zisblatt will discuss her book and experiences at a Holocaust
Remembrance Day commemoration that is free and open to the public
at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Kaplan JCC, 3151 N. Military Trail
in West Palm Beach.
As a young prisoner in the camps, Irene witnessed and experienced
unspeakable cruelty and brutality. She lost her whole family to the gas
chambers. She was a “guinea pig” for Dr. Josef Mengele, who performed
inhumane experiments on her.
The last mementos of her family were the four diamonds given to her
by her mother that she had to keep swallowing over and over so they
wouldn’t be confiscated. She walked for two months on a death march
while thousands of weakened prisoners dropped dead around her.
Through it all, she held onto her hope and faith and, encouraged by the
strength of her friend, Sabka, somehow she made it through one of
humankind’s darkest eras.
Although she swore to tell the world of the atrocities she’d seen, to be
a voice for her friends and fellow prisoners, it took her 50 years to overcome her fear and shame before she could do so. After taking part in a
March of the Living, a walk through the concentration camps in Poland
culminating in a visit to Israel, she opened up and shared her story with
the younger generation.
She’s been sharing it ever since, speaking around the world, testifying
for the Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation and taking
part in Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning documentary, “The Last
Days.” The documentary covers the final four months of World War II,
when Hitler knew the war was lost, but still ordered the extermination
of Hungary's Jews. The film focuses on Zisblatt and four other survivors
of that genocide who all eventually became American citizens. g
The the program is free. Please call Barbara at 561-712-5204 by
April 15 for reservations.

The Passover meaning of
“Next Year in Rebuilt Jerusalem”
As a little girl, I always looked forward to the part of the Seder when we
would break into heartfelt singing of “Next year in the rebuilt
Jerusalem.” Something in the lyrics, and possibly in my awareness, that
we would all sing a collection of ancient and much-loved songs made
this the best part of the night for me. And over the years, I have found
different, but profound meanings in the same songs.
“
Judaism

The saying “Next year in Jerusalem,” is to my mind, first and foremost,
an expression of faith in the individual, as well as the collective, to
change reality for the better. Despite the worldview that eternalizes the
present moment, Judaism encourages us to look forward to the future
and to hope for better days for the Jewish people and the entire world.
“
The Seder night offers a number of “highs” during the course of an
evening which consists of a deep, meaningful family conversation
around such questions as where have we come from and where are we
headed in the future.
The story of the Exodus from Egypt is an example of escape from the
cycle of poverty and slavery to a better future. The challenges do not
end or disappear, yet we are given the opportunity to try to experience,
to choose, and to influence progress, even if it is

our challenges is to create a dialogue between our individual inner
essence and experience and our awareness of and the significance of
being connected to the larger collective and create a dialogue between
all parts of this nation.
The words “Next year in rebuilt Jerusalem,” have many meanings.
Perhaps one of them is a prayer that we will succeed in building
