Ryan D. Mayer
What’s your name?
Jamie Neumann
How long have you been an
actress?
Since I was born…
What was the name of your show
in FringeNYC?
“We are Burning” by Aaron Zook,
a classmate of mine at T. Schreiber
Studio.
Can you briefly describe the play?
Oh fuck. If I can remember it.
Sorta world was coming to an end.
The Greek god Prometheus…
somehow a man and a woman find
themselves in a coffee shop with
Prometheus, the Greek god who
brought fire/enlightenment to the
humans… mixing real life with
mythology. It was a quest for
understanding.
When did it run?
When? What year? 2004.
How did you get involved?
I met the playwright at an ongoing
scene study class at T. Schreiber.
He asked me to audition along with
other members of the class. He told
me on the day of the auditions that I
was it for the role of Io, a crazy
nymph.
What was your role?
Io, a character of Greek mythology is
a young maiden with whom Zeus
falls in love, who suffered a hideous
fate because Zeus’ wife, Hera, turned
her into a cow. Io is plagued with
gadflies, terrible stinging creatures,
so she roams the earth in constant
pain. In the context of the play, she
meets at human who falls in love
with her, probably because he can
never keep her.
What were the challenges
as an actress?
Um, she was a woman constantly in
emotional, spiritual and physical
pain. As an actor, it is taxing as hell
because you have to put yourself in
that mindset, in that position every
time you rehearse; as an actor you
have to somehow find that pain

And somehow that

smile…
within yourself, a tricky business…
when you have to make yourself
truly miserable, but only for certain
hours of certain days, and then try
not to carry it with you all the time.
Tell us about your colleagues
in the show.
Another classmate of mine ended up
playing the role of the “Man.” The
cast became fairly close.
We’d try to get together after with
notes. Everybody was supportive of
each other. My friend, Krish, and I
became close, as we saw each other
outside of class. It boosted our bond.
Can you speak generally about
your participation in FringeNYC?
It was really a great experience. It
was totally rustic New York East
Village theatre. Our particular show
performed at Collective Unconscious
theatre. We performed in the new
space of theirs. I used to pass by the
old space on Ludlow. It was so dirtyweird-New York-attractive to me.
That was a trip.
Can you give us a specific
moment that captures the essence
of your experience?
A teacher of mine, a good friend,
came to see the show and I
remember he said to me, “I loved
with how much abandon you ran
offstage. Every time I thought you
would pull down the curtain.” So
that’s what I think of: this crazy
painful running I’d do every night…
off the stage…through
the tiny backstage area... and just
keep running until I got to the street.
And there I’d be in the middle of
downtown New York. And somehow
that always made me smile. I

THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL • ISSUE NO. 1
FRINGE NYC
TURNS 10
Not everyone in New York gets this excited about a birthday. Mayor Bloomberg turned 64 this past February without much fuss. Woody Allen’s 70th didn’t garner that
much attention either. The Statue of Liberty even managed to hit the big 122 when no one was looking. The New York International Fringe Festival however, has a slightly
different approach to growing old. This year marks its 10th anniversary, and like any self-respecting aging hipster, FringeNYC wants everyone to join in the celebration.
This is not to say that FringeNYC is
experiencing a mid-life crisis. Fun,
excitement and community have
been staples of the festival since its
inception, and with this year’s
theme of “I am FringeNYC,” these
qualities have come to express
the spirit of the festival this year
more than ever. So while you
probably won’t notice any golf
clubs, gray hairs, or other signs of
distinguished maturity at
FringeNYC birthday events, you
will find tremendous energy,
creativity, and just a touch of
nostalgia.
FringeNYC is celebrating all of
these concepts along with its
anniversary this year through
several different 10th Anniversary
Special Events. The most talkedabout of these is the FringeNYC
Alumni Production Project, and not
just because its acronym (FAPP) is
so much fun to say. In addition to
the 200+ productions that have
come to the festival for the first
time this year, FringeNYC is
bringing back ten of the festival’s
most successful shows in its
decade-long history. This showcase
not only serves to celebrate
FringeNYC’s success, but also to
give new festival-goers a glimpse
into the festival’s history and bring
them up to speed on the scene.
Podcasting
The same is true of FringeNYC
Podcasting, a 10th Anniversary
Special Event that can be
accessed online at

older, it’s certainly not ready to

weathered a city-wide blackout, the

course, FringeNYC shows have
gone on to win numerous awards,
achieve successful runs in the
Broadway, off-Broadway, and
regional theater worlds, as well as
foster numerous professional and
personal relationships.
Growing
Certain aspects of FringeNYC
have definitely matured since the
debut festival in 1997, but its most
vital elements are the ones that
have remained exactly the same.
Tickets to a FringeNYC show are

Pat yourself on the back. Go ahead, you deserve it. Whether you are an audience
member, a playwright, a volunteer, an actor, a techie or a groupie, FringeNYC
wouldn’t be possible without you. The diverse and innovative dynamic of the
festival occurs thanks to the stellar energy and enthusiasm the FringeNYC
community brings! Let’s kick off our festival the right way by celebrating the
unity and beauty that is US with music, FringeART Speed Painting, and an
invocation of the muses. Bring your postcards. Bring a show poster/banner.
Bring a big puppet. Bring the kids. Bring whatever you need to say “I am here!

JAO ART JAO, hyperkinetic artist and
athlete, paints on a giant easel in the back
of her pick up truck. Wearing a helmet and
kneepads, she jumps, spins, and hurls
herself into the dangerous extreme sport she
calls speed painting. Lightening fast Eastern
European gypsy music drives her to the
outrageous result of two 6’ x 6’ paintings in
three minutes.

THE PERSONAL SHOPPER…
And then there are those shows
of non-official imprisonments and
destruction (art imitates
government?) like The Revenants
(“undead spouses chained in the
corner”) and The Chrysalis Stage
(“chained captive”). We have
DEAR AMERICA (“bombing their
High School”) and The City That
Cried Wolf (“crime amidst political
corruption.”).
One major trend obvious to
those who observe is the meager
offerings of celebrity shows.
(Could it be true? The celebrity
oriented culture is growing up…).
We have Tom Cruise and Kissinger,
true, but not much more. R.I.P
There is, however, a trend
towards the faux celebrities – those
who are mentioned in their full
name as if we SHOULD remember
them from somewhere. The Devil
and Billy Markham (who’s what’s
his name?) and Fay Lindsay-Jones
Story (“a woman--obsessed with
fame”) as well as Harriet
Hopperdoodle's Hair-Brained
History Test! (“she visits”) and, of
course, Mary Berry Presents: The
Life of Mary Berry (“becoming a
Playboy centerfold isn't easy”).
Anther shift is from last year’s
ubiquitous “Something – The
Musical” to new territories. This
year we have Suicide, The Musical
which seems to mark the death of
the “ --------, The Musical”
indulgence. This year we have The
Tell-Tale Heart – a musicabre and
HENRY KISSINGER: A
ROMANTIC COMEDY, and, of
course, Melo-llama: A Melodrama
( and they have a director actually
named Moritz von Stuelpnagel;
believe it… or not!).
Iconic

If we do not follow celebrities
anymore, who do we stalk? Well,
how about out cultural icons.
Girl Scouts of America (“little
merit badges”) and the Brothers
Grimm in How 2 Men Got On in
the World. We have some Tarantino
(Reservoir Bitches) and some
80’s retro-inspired exploration:
Take On Me (adoption, addiction,
and a-ha).
We also see this year an
explosion of new twists to classical
theatre like FAUST, but particularly
Shakespeare as in Corleone: The
Shakespearean Godfather and
Fatboy Romeo. We have a One
Man Hamlet and Ophelia, and,
yes, REVENGE OF A KING, which
is about, well, Hamlet.
We also see free use of Greek
terms, evoking certain episodes of
Star Trek. We have this year
MUSCLE-MAN vs.
SKELETONMAN: A Love Story...
the musical and Uneventful
Deaths for Agathon. But also
Anima, Anna and The
Annadroids: The Robots Dream
Tour and, yep, let’s end it with
a bang, The Armageddon
Dance Party.
(“watch a Turkish couple”). And
then we have I'LL SELL THE
HOUSE IN WHICH I CAN LIVE
NO MORE (without a single
spoken word) and Open House
(“monstrously patriotic yard
display”).
Last words
The gang from "Blue Balls" (clockwise
from top): writer/actor Michael Tester,
actor Alexandra Bosquet, actor C.J. Dion,
actor Vincent Ortega, stage manager
Matthew Smith.
So we draw close to the end of
today’s shopping with a couple of
coincidences that may mark a
trend. In Transit kind of explains
this paragraph as a whole. We have
58! A Comedy About Bike
Messengessengering (“Annoyance
Theatre” only by name) and The
Bicycle Men (Alumni '04) but
especially American Muscle about
John DeLorean, the Muscle Car
innovator.
And then we have that HOUSE
theme: like FULL HOUSE
(“ambition and treachery wrapped
in a kimono”) or simply HOUSE
And how about some meaningless
facts?
Well, people, I regret to inform
you that this year we have no show
title that starts with a “J”. No – but
o the other hand, this is a rare year
when a show title starts with an
“X”. (What does it all mean?)
We kind of regret having very
few overly long titles. We cleverly
initiated last year the “Like a
Horse” award for those insisting on
wasting our time even before we
enter the theater and would love to
continue handing it out. Perhaps
befittingly to an anniversary
festival, the longest title belongs to
an alumni show.
And the winner of the “Like a
Horse” award for being too long, is
(trumpets, now!) The Complete
Lost Works of Samuel Beckett As
Found In An Envelope (partially
burned) In A Dustbin In Paris
Labeled: "Never to be performed.
Never. Ever. EVER! Or I'll Sue!

That’s it with the browsing,
people – time to jump in and get
swept away! Have a great 10th

Teething problems
Don’t you just hate it when you
have the time, energy, and sincere
intention to get work done, but
you can’t because technology
won’t cooperate? And people are
calling, or stopping by your desk,
or sending semaphores, asking for
your help, and you really want to
help them--you’re truly excited to
help them, truly, truly eager to help
them--but you can’t—because you
just can’t get technology to
cooperate?
And the next thing you know,
you’re crawling across a marble
floor, trying to follow the trails of
twenty different cables in the hopes
that one of them will lead you to
the world wide web? Welcome to
FringeCENTRAL: The First Few
Days.
Invitation
Allow me to introduce myself. I’m
one of the FringeCENTRAL
Managers, Jill J. (I’m not used to
there being more than one Jill, and
using my last initial is a bit strange
for me). We may have met if you’ve
already stopped in—but if you
haven’t yet been by our swanky
Mercer Street headquarters,
consider this an invitation.
I would have written sooner,
but I’ve spent the past week
assisting Alex (our miracleworking IT Coordinator) and Taty
(our equally-miraculous
Webmaster) with the wrestling of
technology. And for a while there,
the Beast in the Ethernet seemed to
be winning.
Ha! Ha, I say! Vanquished you
are, Beast.
You see? That’s all sorted out
now, festival headquarters are upand-running, and here I am, finally
writing to you, FringeFANS and
FringePARTICIPANTS and
FringeCURIOUS about the opening
of FringeCENTRAL, the place to get
the answers to all your FringeNYC
questions. And to get tickets to the
200 plus shows participating this
year—our tenth anniversary!
Visiting
By the way, FringeCENTRAL is an
excellent place to cool off. Not only
is it air-conditioned, but it’s mostly
marble. So the air is cool; the walls
are cool; the floor is cool. We
moved in just over a week ago, in
the middle of that terrible heat
wave, and let me tell you how
fantastic it felt after unloading the
Fringe Central before the load-in.
But whatever you
do… pleeeeease don’t
move that wire
van, just to sit on the cold marble
floor. Possibly better than diving
into one of the fountains in the
park. But a whole lot more sanitary.
So stop in, cool off, check out
the decorations—the Special Events
staff, led by Kevin Bartlett, does
amazing things with fabric and
wall hangings, I tell you. You can
also meet some people. Did I
mention the people? Not only cool,
but friendly. And eager to meet
you, answer all your questions,
and help you get on your way to
the performances and events.

creature likes me very much right
now. You can be sure it would
make the most of any tiny
opportunity to slink out and seek
its dark digital revenge upon me.
And honestly, I like it here,
standing up, getting actual work
done—and would sincerely prefer
to avoid another fun-filled evening
of following cables. The marble
floor is a pleasant refresher, but I
think I’ve had my fill of crawling
for this year.

THE PERSONAL
SHOPPER –
NOW IN SOHO!
This is FringeNYC’s 10th
anniversary, but also the Personal
Shopper column’s third year in the
running. We can finally look back
and notice the trends. If 2004 was all
about the Republican Convention
(and celebrities), 2005 saw a lighter
festival with many “Something,
Something – the Musical” offerings
and extremely silly long names (and,
of course – celebs).
The pendulum has swung back
– this year we have many offerings
affected by politics, and very few
silly long names. More trends:
perhaps due to the Tom Cruise
backlash, we have less shows
featuring celebrities and more
shows about faux-celebs.
We see lots of references to the
classics and cultural icons this year,
but mostly, a plethora of nonderivative, zany, fresh
shows to excite all thrill seekers.
I can’t wait!

(our equally-miraculous
Webmaster) with the wrestling of
technology. And for a while there,
the Beast in the Ethernet seemed to
be winning.
Ha! Ha, I say! Vanquished you
are, Beast.
You see? That’s all sorted out
now, festival headquarters are upand-running, and here I am, finally
writing to you, FringeFANS and
FringePARTICIPANTS and
FringeCURIOUS about the opening
of FringeCENTRAL, the place to get
the answers to all your FringeNYC
questions. And to get tickets to the
200 plus shows participating this
year—our tenth anniversary!

By the way, FringeCENTRAL is an
excellent place to cool off. Not only
is it air-conditioned, but it’s mostly
marble. So the air is cool; the walls
are cool; the floor is cool. We
moved in just over a week ago, in
the middle of that terrible heat
wave, and let me tell you how
fantastic it felt after unloading the
Fringe Central before the load-in.
But whatever you
do… pleeeeease don’t
move that wire
van, just to sit on the cold marble
floor. Possibly better than diving
into one of the fountains in the
park. But a whole lot more sanitary.
So stop in, cool off, check out
the decorations—the Special Events
staff, led by Kevin Bartlett, does
amazing things with fabric and
wall hangings, I tell you. You can
also meet some people. Did I
mention the people? Not only cool,
but friendly. And eager to meet
you, answer all your questions,
and help you get on your way to
the performances and events.

now. You can be sure it would
make the most of any tiny
opportunity to slink out and seek
its dark digital revenge upon me.
And honestly, I like it here,
standing up, getting actual work

THE PERSONAL
SHOPPER –
NOW IN SOHO!
This is FringeNYC’s 10th
anniversary, but also the Personal
Shopper column’s third year in the
running. We can finally look back
and notice the trends. If 2004 was all
about the Republican Convention
(and celebrities), 2005 saw a lighter
festival with many “Something,
Something – the Musical” offerings
and extremely silly long names (and,
of course – celebs).
The pendulum has swung back
– this year we have many offerings
affected by politics, and very few
silly long names. More trends:
perhaps due to the Tom Cruise
backlash, we have less shows
featuring celebrities and more
shows about faux-celebs.
We see lots of references to the
classics and cultural icons this year,
but mostly, a plethora of nonderivative, zany, fresh
shows to excite all thrill seekers.
I can’t wait!

Say it. Record it. Hear it on the web. “I Am FringeNYC”
Pod’s away!
To celebrate the 10th Anniversary
of the New York International
Fringe Festival, “I am FringeNYC”
messages are spreading across the
world wide web.
For the first time, FringeNYC
teamed up with Evoca, a web
communications company, to
provide a virtual home for the
thousands of volunteers, participants,
staff, audience and alumni to audio
record and share their Festival
memories through “podcasts.”
Podcasting is a relatively new
form of communication that allows
anyone to record a broadcast and
then publish it online so that other
people may listen to or download
it. In its relatively short life span,
people have used podcasting in a
variety of ways, including weekly
show broadcasts, company
updates, and event documentation.
“FringeNYC has survived and
thrived these last ten years by taking
advantage of every available,
affordable technology out there,”
said Elena Holy, Producing Artistic
Director of the Present Company
which produces FringeNYC. “Our
goal in this anniversary year was, in
part, to reach as many of our alumni,
friends, and fans as possible. I
consider them the FringeNYC
Family, and we want this year's
festival to be the biggest family
reunion ever! Unfortunately, many of
our family members cannot be with
us this August but we wanted a way
to capture their stories, and share
them with everyone. Podcasting
seemed like a natural solution.”
With Evoca, anyone will be able
to easily create, organize, share, and
search FringeNYC podcasts after
signing up for a free account.
FringeNYC is encouraging
everyone involved in the Festival
during the past 10 years to sign up,
and record their own podcast.
Then, the podcasts will be used to
share 10 years of stories and
memories with new and old
members of the Festival family.

The first episode of The

featuring Minimum Wage gives tips
on getting the most out of the
Festival, an interview with Cobey
Mandarino about his show The
Chrysalis Stage, and much more.
You can also hear stories from
specific artists such as John
Pinckard from Silence! the Musical to
Never Swim Alone and Adam
Klasfeld, the Artistic Director of
One Armed Man.
Pinckard’s podcast talks about
his accidental, permanent move to
New York City and his career
change from lightning designer to
director/producer, while Klasfeld’s
podcast discusses his play Good
Fences Make Good Neighbors, from
last year’s festival, that focuses on
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To
listen to any of these podcasts, log
into your Evoca account and search
in the FringeNYC group.
With the 2006 Festival just
starting up, there is no shortage of
stories. To share your story, it’s as
easy as a phone call from your cell
phone. “The podcasts are about
sharing what makes FringeNYC
tick,” said Sutaria. “Participants,
volunteers, audience members and
fans bring in an incredible amount
of creative energy into NYC for two
weeks every summer and as a
result, there are countless stories
and tales that emerge. We want to
hear them. We want you to share
your FringeNYC stories and
experiences.” I

THE PERSONAL SHOPPER…
And then there are those shows
of non-official imprisonments and
destruction (art imitates
government?) like The Revenants
(“undead spouses chained in the
corner”) and The Chrysalis Stage
(“chained captive”). We have
DEAR AMERICA (“bombing their
High School”) and The City That
Cried Wolf (“crime amidst political
corruption.”).
One major trend obvious to
those who observe is the meager
offerings of celebrity shows.
(Could it be true? The celebrity
oriented culture is growing up…).
We have Tom Cruise and Kissinger,
true, but not much more. R.I.P
There is, however, a trend
towards the faux celebrities – those
who are mentioned in their full
name as if we SHOULD remember
them from somewhere. The Devil
and Billy Markham (who’s what’s
his name?) and Fay Lindsay-Jones
Story (“a woman--obsessed with
fame”) as well as Harriet
Hopperdoodle's Hair-Brained
History Test! (“she visits”) and, of
course, Mary Berry Presents: The
Life of Mary Berry (“becoming a
Playboy centerfold isn't easy”).
Anther shift is from last year’s
ubiquitous “Something – The
Musical” to new territories. This
year we have Suicide, The Musical
which seems to mark the death of
the “ --------, The Musical”
indulgence. This year we have The
Tell-Tale Heart – a musicabre and
HENRY KISSINGER: A
ROMANTIC COMEDY, and, of
course, Melo-llama: A Melodrama
( and they have a director actually
named Moritz von Stuelpnagel;
believe it… or not!).
Iconic

If we do not follow celebrities
anymore, who do we stalk? Well,
how about out cultural icons.
Girl Scouts of America (“little
merit badges”) and the Brothers
Grimm in How 2 Men Got On in
the World. We have some Tarantino
(Reservoir Bitches) and some
80’s retro-inspired exploration:
Take On Me (adoption, addiction,
and a-ha).
We also see this year an
explosion of new twists to classical
theatre like FAUST, but particularly
Shakespeare as in Corleone: The
Shakespearean Godfather and
Fatboy Romeo. We have a One
Man Hamlet and Ophelia, and,
yes, REVENGE OF A KING, which
is about, well, Hamlet.
We also see free use of Greek
terms, evoking certain episodes of
Star Trek. We have this year
MUSCLE-MAN vs.
SKELETONMAN: A Love Story...
the musical and Uneventful
Deaths for Agathon. But also
Anima, Anna and The
Annadroids: The Robots Dream
Tour and, yep, let’s end it with
a bang, The Armageddon
Dance Party.
(“watch a Turkish couple”). And
then we have I'LL SELL THE
HOUSE IN WHICH I CAN LIVE
NO MORE (without a single
spoken word) and Open House
(“monstrously patriotic yard
display”).
Last words
The gang from "Blue Balls" (clockwise
from top): writer/actor Michael Tester,
actor Alexandra Bosquet, actor C.J. Dion,
actor Vincent Ortega, stage manager
Matthew Smith.
So we draw close to the end of
today’s shopping with a couple of
coincidences that may mark a
trend. In Transit kind of explains
this paragraph as a whole. We have
58! A Comedy About Bike
Messengessengering (“Annoyance
Theatre” only by name) and The
Bicycle Men (Alumni '04) but
especially American Muscle about
John DeLorean, the Muscle Car
innovator.
And then we have that HOUSE
theme: like FULL HOUSE
(“ambition and treachery wrapped
in a kimono”) or simply HOUSE
And how about some meaningless
facts?
Well, people, I regret to inform
you that this year we have no show
title that starts with a “J”. No – but
o the other hand, this is a rare year
when a show title starts with an
“X”. (What does it all mean?)
We kind of regret having very
few overly long titles. We cleverly
initiated last year the “Like a
Horse” award for those insisting on
wasting our time even before we
enter the theater and would love to
continue handing it out. Perhaps
befittingly to an anniversary
festival, the longest title belongs to
an alumni show.
And the winner of the “Like a
Horse” award for being too long, is
(trumpets, now!) The Complete
Lost Works of Samuel Beckett As

Labeled: "Never to be performed.

FOR TEN
by

Ryan D. Mayer
What’s your name?
Jamie Neumann
How long have you been an
actress?
Since I was born…
What was the name of your show
in FringeNYC?
“We are Burning” by Aaron Zook,
a classmate of mine at T. Schreiber
Studio.
Can you briefly describe the play?
Oh fuck. If I can remember it.
Sorta world was coming to an end.
The Greek god Prometheus…
somehow a man and a woman find
themselves in a coffee shop with
Prometheus, the Greek god who
brought fire/enlightenment to the
humans… mixing real life with
mythology. It was a quest for
understanding.
When did it run?
When? What year? 2004.
How did you get involved?
I met the playwright at an ongoing
scene study class at T. Schreiber.
He asked me to audition along with
other members of the class. He told
me on the day of the auditions that I
was it for the role of Io, a crazy
nymph.
What was your role?
Io, a character of Greek mythology is
a young maiden with whom Zeus
falls in love, who suffered a hideous
fate because Zeus’ wife, Hera, turned
her into a cow. Io is plagued with
gadflies, terrible stinging creatures,
so she roams the earth in constant
pain. In the context of the play, she
meets at human who falls in love
with her, probably because he can
never keep her.
What were the challenges
as an actress?
Um, she was a woman constantly in
emotional, spiritual and physical
pain. As an actor, it is taxing as hell
because you have to put yourself in
that mindset, in that position every
time you rehearse; as an actor you
have to somehow find that pain

within yourself, a tricky business…
when you have to make yourself
truly miserable, but only for certain
hours of certain days, and then try
not to carry it with you all the time.
Tell us about your colleagues
in the show.
Another classmate of mine ended up
playing the role of the “Man.” The
cast became fairly close.
We’d try to get together after with
notes. Everybody was supportive of
each other. My friend, Krish, and I
became close, as we saw each other
outside of class. It boosted our bond.
Can you speak generally about
your participation in FringeNYC?
It was really a great experience. It
was totally rustic New York East
Village theatre. Our particular show
performed at Collective Unconscious
theatre. We performed in the new
space of theirs. I used to pass by the
old space on Ludlow. It was so dirtyweird-New York-attractive to me.
That was a trip.
Can you give us a specific
moment that captures the essence
of your experience?
A teacher of mine, a good friend,
came to see the show and I
remember he said to me, “I loved
with how much abandon you ran
offstage. Every time I thought you
would pull down the curtain.” So
that’s what I think of: this crazy
painful running I’d do every night…
off the stage…through
the tiny backstage area... and just
keep running until I got to the street.
And there I’d be in the middle of
downtown New York. And somehow
that always made me smile. I
AUGUST
11-27 2006
THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL • ISSUE NO. 1
FRINGE NYC
TURNS 10
Not everyone in New York gets this excited about a birthday. Mayor Bloomberg turned 64 this past February without much fuss. Woody Allen’s 70th didn’t garner that
much attention either. The Statue of Liberty even managed to hit the big 122 when no one was looking. The New York International Fringe Festival however, has a slightly
different approach to growing old. This year marks its 10th anniversary, and like any self-respecting aging hipster, FringeNYC wants everyone to join in the celebration.
This is not to say that FringeNYC is
experiencing a mid-life crisis. Fun,
excitement and community have
been staples of the festival since its
inception, and with this year’s
theme of “I am FringeNYC,” these
qualities have come to express
the spirit of the festival this year
more than ever. So while you
probably won’t notice any golf
clubs, gray hairs, or other signs of
distinguished maturity at
FringeNYC birthday events, you
will find tremendous energy,
creativity, and just a touch of
nostalgia.
FringeNYC is celebrating all of
these concepts along with its
anniversary this year through
several different 10th Anniversary
Special Events. The most talkedabout of these is the FringeNYC
Alumni Production Project, and not
just because its acronym (FAPP) is
so much fun to say. In addition to
the 200+ productions that have
come to the festival for the first
time this year, FringeNYC is
bringing back ten of the festival’s
most successful shows in its
decade-long history. This showcase
not only serves to celebrate
FringeNYC’s success, but also to
give new festival-goers a glimpse
into the festival’s history and bring
them up to speed on the scene.
Podcasting
The same is true of FringeNYC
Podcasting, a 10th Anniversary
Special Event that can be
accessed online at
http://evoca.net/events/fringenyc.
Though the festival may be getting
older, it’s certainly not ready to
complain about those gosh darn
kids and their electronics. Rather,
through podcasting, FringeNYC is

weathered a city-wide blackout, the
Republican National Convention,
and the aftermath of 9/11. And of
course, FringeNYC shows have
gone on to win numerous awards,
achieve successful runs in the
Broadway, off-Broadway, and
regional theater worlds, as well as
foster numerous professional and
personal relationships.
Growing
Certain aspects of FringeNYC
have definitely matured since the
debut festival in 1997, but its most
vital elements are the ones that
have remained exactly the same.
Tickets to a FringeNYC show are
