So this past weekend I was blessed with being able to take a wonderful
trip to the zoo with my family. While we were there I realized very quickly
that the zoo I was viewing was not the same as the zoo my 2 year old was
seeing. So when he was in his stroller I would kneel down and let him
“take” a picture of the animal he was seeing. (I held the phone while he
pushed the button) If my husband or I were holding him I would hold my
phone up in front of him and let him “take” a picture. I quickly realized
by letting him take these pictures that I would have a very unique perspective for my scrapbook. I always love to see kids running around with
cameras! Because what you think might be important isn’t the same as
what they think is. But normally parents don’t let their children have free
range with a camera until they are old enough to handle one. But you can
do it with smaller children just like I did this weekend. Here are some of

3 medium firm bananas, sliced
1 prepared angel food cake (16 oz.), cut into
1” cubes
1 pint fresh strawberries, halved
1 pkg. (.6 oz.) sugar-free strawberry gelatin
2 C. boiling water
1-1/2 c. cold water
1 carton (8 oz.) reduced-fat whipped topping,
thawed
Layer banana slices and cake cubes in a 13”x9”x2”
dish coated with nonstick cooking spray. Place strawberries over cake and press down gently. In a bowl,
dissolve gelatin in boiling water; stir in cold water.
Pour over strawberries. Refrigerate for 3 hours or
until set. Frost with whipped topping. Yield: 16 servings.
PINEAPPLE ICED TEA
1 qt. water
7 individual tea bags
1 C. unsweetened pineapple juice
1/3 C. lemon juice
2 Tbsp. sugar
In a saucepan, bring water to a boil. Remove from
the heat. Add tea bags; cover and steep for 3-5 minutes. Discard tea bags. Stir in the pineapple juice,
lemon juice and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate overnight for the flavors to blend. Serve
over ice. Yield: 5 servings.

These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of

In her book The Shelter of Each Other, Mary
Pipher gives advice on rebuilding troubled families. She explores how today’s children sometimes
overuse TV and video games to the exclusion of
informal instruction received from extended family.
She gives an example of a family reunion where the
youngsters are given a video to watch in the back
room so the adults can talk undisturbed. Dr. Pipher
believes this diversion actually deprives kids. Children need to mix with the older generation so they
can hear the stories of aunts, uncles, grandparents,
and parents. This helps them learn from those who
have gone before them.
The Old Testament places a high value on children
being taught their spiritual heritage. After God
parted the waters of the Jordan River, Joshua was
instructed to take 12 stones from the river to create
a memorial for future generations. “When your
children ask . . . ‘What do these stones mean to
you?’ then you shall answer them that the waters of
the Jordan were cut off. . . . And these stones shall
be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever”
(Josh. 4:6-7).
We need spiritual interaction between generations.
Remember, Bible stories are often family stories.
And our children need them and us.
