Our Region
Sitting at the heart of our region is
the mighty Murray River. It’s one of
Australia’s most loved rivers, attracting
people for many and varied water
experiences all year round.
Early explorers in the 1830s saw the
region’s water supply and open grasslands
as exceptional for grazing and through
agriculture the area was settled.
Transportation of produce like timber, wool
and wheat was possible thanks to the river.
Back then it bustled with paddlesteamers as
they took goods from township to township
with most goods destined for Melbourne.
Today, the fertile lands that surround the river
are still famed for producing quality food and
wine. Visiting the many local farm gates and

Local villages
Berrigan is a charming township where historic
buildings still tell the stories of yesteryear and
vast productive lands stretch for miles.
Head south of Yarrawonga to explore the
well-documented history and architecture of
Tungamah. The Tungamah Heritage Walk will
give you snapshot of the stories from the late
1800s. You’ll find out about the hotels, stores,
post office, court house and much more.
Meander along the main street in Berrigan to
see heritage highlights like the old post office
building, Federal Hotel and Memorial Hall. Play
a round of golf on the local course or attend a
horse-racing event.
A short drive in any direction while visiting
Sun Country on the Murray will find you in
an interesting village with a story to tell and
sights to see.
Located on Nine Mile Creek, the small
township of Wunghnu (pronounced one ewe)
has canoe trees to see in the local reserve.
These eucalypts have scars from when the
local indigenous people took bark to create
their watercrafts.
Surrounded by rich dairy farmlands,
Strathmerton is a pretty town with a golf
course and lawn bowls club that attract locals
and visitors. Benjamin Boyd first settled the
area in 1841, and today the town is home to a
large Bega Cheese Factory.
To pick your own strawberries, be sure to head
to nearby Koonoomoo to visit a local strawberry
farm. The town has the Big Strawberry for you
to photograph as a lasting memento of your
visit and also KNM Berries where a huge variety
of berries and stone fruit is available.
28
www.suncountryonthemurray.com.au
Wheat crops were first planted here by
European settlers in the early 1840s. Today this
Riverina region is home to rice crops as well.
Beautiful Lake Finley is perfect for watersports,
picnics and boating. A kid’s playground with a
replica sailing ship adds to the fun. Fishing or
simply just relaxing are just some of the local
pastimes.
Close by you’ll find charming
townships with historic features,
a relaxed way of life and a friendly
atmosphere.
Further down the road is St James, surrounded
by the farmlands that the township continues
to support. Old buildings are worth viewing
and you’ll find a warm welcome at the local
pub. Significantly one of the most famous
Australian stores began here with the first
G J Coles business.
Picturesque Finley is surrounded by farmlands
and is home to the largest irrigation channel
in Australia.
“
To pick your own
strawberries, be sure
to head to nearby
Koonoomoo to visit a
local strawberry farm.
