mildewy odor in the
downstairs bathroom. I
keep the bathroom
clean, and I even pour a
cup of vinegar down the
drains once a month, but
the odor comes back.
For now, I’m using an
air freshener to mask
the smell, but how can I
locate and get rid

A: That mildew smell
is most likely from mold
growth. If you can’t
visually locate a patch of
mildew or mold in the
bathroom, such as in
lower corners of the wall
or the shower, contact
a plumber. It’s very
likely that a water leak
somewhere behind the
wall is causing the mold
problem. Even a small
amount of mold in a
home can trigger allergies or breathing problems in many people.
It’s also a warning signal
that water is damaging
important parts of your
home — not just the
drywall but the wood
framing, sheathing,
foundation and more.
A leaky supply or drainpipe can mean water
is dripping behind the
walls. A plumber can
inspect these pipes without causing damage
to the rest of the bathroom. The plumber will
then recommend the
best action to take to
stop the moisture damage and remove the
mold. If mold is affecting carpet or wallpaper
in the area, you’ll need
to replace those items
as well. If dampness is
a constant problem in
the bathroom, make
sure the room is getting
adequate airflow, even
if the original problem is

UPCOMING 2015-16
HUNTING SEASON (PART 2 OF 2)
When you pick up your new 2015-16 PA hunting license, you’re going to notice some significant changes in the accompanying 2015-16 PA Hunting & Trapping Digest. Overall, a vibrant new format with high
definition maps and a larger font size make this year’s
hunting & trapping digest a very informative reference and much more user friendly. The frequently
consulted overview of the 2015-16 hunting seasons
and bag limits on pages 10-11 has been redesigned
to be clear and concise. While the important 2015-16
hunting hours table on page 14 has been revamped
for clarity and easy interpretation. Last week, we focused on several regulation changes that have been
implemented for widely pursued white-tailed deer.
This week, we’ll take a look at a myriad of revisions
that will impact hunters and trappers across PA.
One change that will probably impact the most
hunters across the Commonwealth is the extension
of the late small game season for ring-necked pheasants, rabbits, and squirrels until the last day of February. This adds over a week to the previous closing
date and will make February 29, 2016 the final opportunity to fill the game pouch on your small game
coat/vest. This coming season will probably be the
first time many hunters head afield on quadrennial
“Leap Day”.
For those who hunt the over 1.5 million acres of
State Game Lands (SGLs) found across PA, a new
requirement has been established for those who
erect either ground blinds or tree stands (hang-on,
ladder, or climbing) and leave them afield overnight.
Starting this year, hunters must now mark their tree
stands and blinds left out overnight on SGLs with
a durable ID tag that bears either: (1) the owner’s
name and address, (2) the hunter’s CID number
(found on their hunting license), or (3) an alternate
ID number that will be available on-line from the PA
Game Commission’s Outdoor Shop. (Alternate ID
numbers were not yet available from The Outdoor
Shop when I checked on June 15, 2015.) Trappers
have always been required to attach an ID Tag to
their traps and I can foresee the day possibly coming
when any tree stand or blind left out overnight on
public or private property will require an owner’s ID
Tag, here in PA.
A modification has been made to the Mentored
Youth Hunting Program (MYHP) that parents,
grandparents, and other adults who mentor youth
hunters need to be aware of. When purchasing their
$2.70 MYHP permits, youths under 7 years of age
at the time of purchase will no longer receive their
own harvest tags for antlered deer and spring turkey. In order to harvest these big game species, the
adult mentor will now have to transfer his or her antlered deer or spring turkey tag to their young mentee. (Tags will still be issued to MYHP participating
youths ages 7 to 11.)
While it may only be taken advantage of by a handful of trappers from our area, the opening of the first
river otter trapping season in over fi fty years in PA
is a significant milestone in wildlife conservation.
Scheduled for three days, February 21-23, 2015, in
WMUs 3C & 3D in Northeast PA, this clearly indicates river otters have recovered and thrived in those
areas to the point that a limited sustainable harvest
is necessary to keep the population within the carrying capacity of the available habitat. Much like the
limited trapping seasons established in recent years
for bobcat and fisher, it is a positive indicator that
furbearers are doing well and expanding their range
in PA. Someday, our own WMU 1A may be included
in one or more of these special seasons!

24 stuffed olives
8 plum tomatoes, halved
2 medium green peppers, cut into quarters
8 small red potatoes, partially cooked
8 large fresh mushrooms
1/4 C. barbecue sauce
In a bowl, combine the first four ingredients.
Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Divide into
24 portions, shape each portion around an olive. Alternately thread meatballs and vegetables onto metal or soaked wooden skewers. Grill kabobs, covered,
over medium-hot heat for 5 minutes. Turn; brush
with barbecue sauce. Cook 5 minutes longer or until
meatballs are no longer pink, basting once. Yield: 6-8
servings.

2 tsp. curry powder
2 Tbsp. finely chopped onion
2 lb. boneless pork, cut into cubes (1” pieces)
3 medium onions, cut into 1” wedges
In a bowl, combine the first six ingredients. Remove half for basting; cover and refrigerate. Add
pork to the remaining marinade; toss to coat. Cover
and refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. Drain and
discard the marinade. Alternately thread pork cubes
and onion wedges on metal or soaked bamboo skewers. Grill, uncovered, over medium heat for 5 minutes; turn. Baste with reserved marinade. Continue
turning and basting for 15 minutes or until meat
juices run clear. Yield: 6 servings.

Read: Ephesians 6:1-11
While waiting for an eye examination, I was struck by
a statement I saw in the optometrist’s office: “Eighty
percent of everything children learn in their first 12
years is through their eyes.” I began thinking of all
that children visually process through reading, television, film, events, surroundings, and observing the
behavior of others, especially their families. On this
Father’s Day, we often think about the powerful influence of a dad.
Paul urged fathers not to frustrate their children to the
point of anger, but to “bring them up in the training
and admonition of the Lord” (Eph. 6:4). Think of the
powerful example of a dad whose behavior and consistency inspire admiration from his children. He’s not
perfect, but he’s moving in the right direction. A great
power for good is at work when our actions reflect the
character of God, rather than distort it.
That’s challenging for any parent, so it’s no coincidence that Paul urges us to “be strong in the Lord and
in the power of His might” (v.10). Only through His
strength can we reflect the love and patience of our
heavenly Father.
We teach our children far more from how we live than
by what we say.
Heavenly Father, I need to know Your love
in order to love others. I want to experience
and share Your patience and kindness with
those I care about. Fill me and use me.
We honor fathers who not only gave us life, but who
also show us how to live.
