How to Make Seed Balls
How to Make Seed Balls
A seed ball is a mixture of clay, compost and seeds. When tossed in a naturalized area (such as your garden), the clay protects the seeds
from birds and wind until the rain can help it begin to grow!
Step 1
Gather materials. You will need:
• Powdered clay (red/terracotta art clay works well)
• Compost or other organic material (soil is okay too)
• Native wildflower or grass seeds (make sure they are native to your area!)
• A bowl for mixing
• Gloves (it gets messy!)
• A measuring cup
• A mask (when working with powdered clay)
Step 2
Add dry ingredients and mix
• 5 parts powdered clay
• 3 parts compost
• 1 part seeds
• Make sure to wear your mask!
Step 3
• Add a little bit of water at a time and mix until moist and malleable
Step 4
• Break off small pieces and roll into balls (or let
your imagination run wild and create any shape you
want!)
Step 5
• Let your seed ball dry in the sun for a day or two until it hardens.
Step 6
• Once dry, your seed ball is ready to be tossed in your garden or any other green space you feel could
use some more native flowers and plants!
