The Silverdome is once again the event headquarters, and the media centre will also be located there.
We hope the information contained in the following manual will assist you in your coverage of the 2010
event.

Media arrangements – 2010 Targa Tasmania
The 19th running of Targa Tasmania gets underway next Tuesday, April 27, with the official prologue at
George Town.
The official pre-event media conference will take place at Symmons Plains at 1pm on Monday, April 26.
Attending will be Jim Richards, Dean Herridge, Steve Glenney, Tony Quinn, Jason White and Brendan
Reeves.
Unlike last year, the official start will proceed the Prologue, with cars being flagged away in numerical order
(lowest to highest) from 9.30am from the Launceston Country Club.
In 2010, the general public will have two key opportunities to see the cars in Launceston, with a Targa Expo
at the Silverdome from 7pm to 10.30pm on Tuesday (April 27) and Friday (April 30).
RADIO
Radio stations seeking reports or interviews should call Ian Chesterman on 0417 530 902, who will facilitate
your requests with either competitors or officials.
Pre-recorded daily preview pieces will be available upon request.
News grabs of all top competitors will also be available at the end of each day via the audio section on the
website: www.sportcom.com.au/targatasmania
TELEVISION
As in previous years, Southern Cross will make available a daily feed, supported by shot list and script.
Details on this service will be made via a separate email.
PHOTOGRAPHIC
Targa Tasmania has a news photographer on-course each day. Pre-event and event photos are available
from the media website located at www.sportcom.com.au/targatasmania.
Please email [email protected] to register for log-in details. Those allocated last year still
provide access.
Images will be loaded twice daily, once around 2pm and then again around 6.30pm.
RALLY LIVE
Across the event, Rally Live, accessed at www.sportcom.com.au/targatasmania will provide the best way to
access breaking news.
SMS SERVICE
Those media wishing to receive results and news via SMS, please send your mobile phone number to
[email protected]. Please note, accredited media need not respond to this as you will have
already accepted this at the time of completing your event paperwork.
GENERAL MEDIA INFORMATION
Media Accreditation Tabards
All Targa Tasmania Accredited Media must wear the prescribed ‘High Vis’ tabard so they can be identified
by roadside officials as being accredited with the event. These tabards will be provided to you with your
media kit and must be worn at all times while covering the event. These tabards are not transferable.
Media Vehicle Access Policy
Media vehicles are not permitted to enter a Targa stage once it is operational. Media must enter the stage
and set-up in an area permitted under their accreditation, before the 000 Vehicle (Police Road Closure, see
Appendix A) leaves the stage start control point.
Media or their vehicles are not permitted to move from their position until the road has reopened.
The course set-up crews will check the position of any vehicle on a competition stage. Vehicle present on
the stage must be parked well off the road in a safe location (preferably up a side road). If the vehicle is
parked along the course, in accordance with normal procedure, it will be taped and a ‘Notice to Driver’ (see
Appendix B) will be placed on the windscreen signifying that the vehicle cannot be moved until after the
passage of the Police Sweep Vehicle (see Appendix A).
Media Points
There will be media points designated on each day of competition. Media points will:

Be separate from a spectator point, or allow premium access at spectator points
May be manned by a marshal during the event

Be indicated on a map, along with directions to be provided with event Media Kits
General Advice for All Media
Always
•
Always stay alert! The unexpected may happen.
•
Always wait until the police car with flashing bar lights passes before moving onto the course. There may otherwise be a delay in the passage of competitors.
•
Always stand where you can see the cars coming and going.
•
Always leave yourself room to move away quickly.
•
Always watch from behind orange barrier tapes.
•
Always keep children under constant, close supervision.
•
Always do as the marshals direct – they have been trained in safe spectating procedures.
•
If necessary, a Targa stage will be stopped until the marshals’ instructions are obeyed!
Never
•
Never stand in prohibited areas. Study the safety diagrams closely.
•
Never stand or sit close to the edge of the road.
•
Never enter areas marked by red & white tape with the words: ‘DANGER – NO SPECTATORS’.
•
Never stand below the level of the road (in gutters or culverts).
•
Never stand in run-off (escape) routes for competitors.
•
Never stand in front of arrows or signs relevant to the event.
•
Never sit at a location on the same level as the cars – you need to be standing, to be able to move away quickly.
•
Never be distracted – always face the competing cars.
•
Never play games with your safety or that of competitors.
•
Never stand on or cross a road while it is officially closed.
•
Never be the one to cause a Targa stage to be stopped!

Photographic Media Accreditation Briefing
This accreditation will not be issued to a photographer until they have viewed the safety presentation online at www.sportcom.com.au/targatasmania.
Media Accreditation Tabards

Photographic Accreditation Safety Requirements
DO
• DO comply with directions of event officials. Should a member of the Media not agree with an
instruction of an official (e.g. they do not feel it is safe) the member of the media remains responsible for
their own safety and must change to a location agreeable to all parties or depart for another location.
• ALWAYS have an escape route planned when choosing a position, (in the event that a car heads
toward you). Do not stand with your back to a solid object such as a tree. Notwithstanding, it is highly
unlikely there will be enough time to avoid an oncoming out of control car, particularly when you are
focused on the scene in front through the lens of a camera.
• ALWAYS be aware your peripheral vision and sense of perspective may be compromised when using a
camera.
• DO take into account the possibility that cars may cut corners.
• DO take into account that rocks and other debris will be ‘thrown’ by the driving wheels of competing
cars in many directions, which may cause injury (and has in the past).
• DO take into account that roadside objects (eg posts etc) may be propelled toward you if hit by
competing cars.
• DO consider where an out of control vehicle will likely end up, noting also the possibility of mechanical
failure, and consider the likely passage of dislodged car components (wheels etc).
• ALWAYS try to stand with something solid and capable of stopping a car (like a substantial tree)
between you and the competing cars. Use the available terrain for your protection (e.g up a bank).
• ALWAYS remain behind the first line of protection when rallies are utilising permanent or semipermanent motor sport facilities, E.g. you must remain behind the concrete walls when a race circuit is
being used.
DO NOT
• DO NOT pass any road closure official or sign, unless specifically permitted by the responsible event
official.
• DO NOT stand in the natural run off area at any location and, in particular, do not stand on the outside
of corners. Be warned that competing cars also often spin to the inside of a corner.
• DO NOT place yourself in a position where the need to move out of the way of a car is reasonably
foreseeable. If it is foreseeable, you are in the incorrect position.
• DO NOT lie down when taking photographs.
• DO NOT choose a position down an embankment, on the exit of a corner, or at the end of a heavy
braking zone.
• DO NOT stand in prohibited areas.
• DO NOT stand in any area that could be considered the competition driving line.
• DO NOT place yourself in a position that may distract competing crews, which may endanger both
yourself and/or the crew and/or affect the competition.
Photographic Licensee
The Photographer Licensee of Targa Tasmania is Tim Jones of Perfect Prints, Hobart.
A number of high-resolution media photographs will be available free of charge from the Targa Tasmania
website during the event (http://www.targatasmania.com.au). These photographs will be suitable for most
publications and are available by downloading the images required.
Other high-resolution images can be obtained by arrangement with Tim Jones.

NOTE: Accreditation will be denied to any party intending to sell photographs to competitors or the
public.
Results
A provisional results service will be available each day, and posted on the Targa Tasmania web site
(http://www.targatasmania.com.au). These reports will provide the top-ten positions in each competition of
the event.
Event Telecaster
Southern Cross Television has again been appointed the Official Targa Tasmania Telecaster for 2010 and
will act as the interface between the event and mainland television coverage of Targa Tasmania. Southern
Cross Television will be able to make arrangements for news footage of the event to be made available to
any other network.

SMS News Alert Service
Any accredited media representative covering Targa Tasmania will be able to receive SMS news alerts
leading up to, during, and following the event. To register for this service please tick the correct box on your
application for accreditation form, or call Ian Chesterman to register your interest on 0417 530 902.
Media Vests/Tabards
Your signing of your accreditation form is a written commitment to pay an amount of $30 per tabard/vest if
it is not returned by Monday, May 10. Your signing of this form negates your company representative from
having to pay a deposit for your use of the tabard or vest.
Procedure after a Serious Incident
All officials of the event have been instructed that, in case of a serious injury arising from an incident during
the running of Targa Tasmania, they are not permitted to speak to any media representative.
The Event Director, Targa Tasmania, Octagon Australia, Mark Perry, or his nominated representative is the
only authorised representative of Octagon permitted to comment on a serious incident. A media conference
will be arranged in due course after such an incident, at which time the appropriate statement from the
Event Director will be issued by the event’s Media Manager.
In the event of a serious incident, the Media Manager will be forthcoming with information as it is confirmed.
Roadside officials for the event have the authority to direct media personnel or member of the public to
remove them from the scene of any incident. This will help to facilitate the rescue of crew members or the
clearing of a damaged vehicle from the course.
These directions may be necessary because following competing vehicles may arrive at the scene at
speed, creating additional danger. Police assistance may be called if media representatives or members of
the public refuse to obey official directions.
Road Closure Procedures
Targa Tasmania is fortunate to have the co-operation of communities around the state that allow roads
making up the course to be closed up to a maximum of 6.5 hours for the competition.
The following procedures will apply:
i) Road Closure
The road will be officially closed by the passage of a Police car (‘000’) with RED flashing lights and siren,
1 hour before the first car is due to start the stage. The road will be closed about four and a half hours in
total. Exact closure times will be published in the media before the event. After closure, spectators must not
move onto or across the road, as competing cars will pass by about every 30 seconds for more than two
and a half hours.
ii)
Road Opening
The road will be officially opened by the passage of a Police Car with flashing bar lights and siren. This
police car will proceed through the Targa stage several minutes after the last competing vehicle.
It is important to understand these procedures. Only the passage of the Police car with flashing bar lights
signifies opening of the roads. Other emergency services vehicles may enter the course at any time during
the competition. In short, any vehicle passing through a stage with only red bar lights means that the road
is still closed.
All roads intersecting those making up the course, as well as all property entrances and gates, will be
sealed with tape prior to the Targa stage being closed to the public and becoming “live”. Road intersections
will be patrolled by Road Closure Marshals.
