Comments: GRAYLING is a very special Vessel: An ex-Maine Sardine Carrier; now an Elegant and
Unique Cruising Vessel. She was originally built to unusually high standards by Frank Rice of East
Boothbay, ME in 1915 for his brother George, who was the High-line fisherman in the area at the time.
“Frank Rice was one of the fussiest builders in an area of the Maine coast known for fussy builders” – see
articles by Doug Hylan in Wooden Boat issues #141 & 142 (Mar/April ’98 & May/June ’98) GRAYLING
was given a new life by her present and marvelous Owner in 1995 – having Benjamin River Marine in
West Brooklin, ME completely rebuild her, including all bronze hull plank fastenings i.e., the original
galvanized fastenings were removed from any planks that were suitable to be left in place, the holes were
plugged using epoxy glue, and Bronze screws were driven into the new white oak frames. Outwardly
GRAYLING was rebuilt as original, including the vertically staved Varnished Cypress Pilot House.
Below decks, she was reconfigured as described under “Accommodations”; and the foc’sle was built new,
as per original. The “GRAYLING story” is covered in detail by builder Doug Hylan in the W.B. Articles
mentioned above, and “Researching and Documenting” by Maynard Bray in WB issue #136 (May/June
’97). GRAYLING has proven to be a most comfortable and able cruising vessel. She has been maintained
in impeccable condition by her meticulous Owner, and I can recommend her highly as a very “special,”
and certianly one of a kind, sea going vessel in “as new” condition.
