Matt and Peggy Taubert started dating in
seventh grade and never looked back
By Kyle Kuphal
It was around 1 a.m. on a
cool October night in 1977
and they both smelled like
pizza after finishing their
shifts at Dar’s when Matt
Taubert proposed to his
high school sweetheart at
her parents’ home.
Peggy said yes and they
woke up her family to celebrate. It was the culmination of a relationship that
began more than five years
earlier when they were both
in seventh grade.
It might seem corny, Matt
says, but they had spent so
much time together from
seventh grade on that he
couldn’t even imagine being with anybody else. And
they spent so much time
with each other’s families
that even before they were
married, it felt like they
were part of the family.
“I think they would have
been heartbroken if it (the
marriage) wouldn’t have
happened,” Peggy said of
her family.
Peggy and her family
moved to Pipestone when
she was in third grade and
Matt is originally from Pipestone, but lived in Mankato for a few years. His family
moved back to Pipestone
when he was in sixth grade
and the next year the two
met and immediately started dating.
They were the first and
only people each ever dated.
“My kids look at us like,
‘what were you thinking
of,’” Matt said.
They bonded quickly
over a common interest in
athletics and a common
group of about 12 friends —
six couples. Like Matt and
Peggy, four of those couples
eventually married.
“That was the thing to do
in the 70s,” Matt said.
About 10 months after
Peggy and Matt Taubert share their journey from seventh grade sweethearts to
recently celebrating their thirty-second wedding anniversary. The secret to a
successful marriage they say is perseverance. Pipestone Publishing/Kyle Kuphal
the pizza-scented proposal they were
married on Aug. 12, 1978 at the First
Presbyterian Church in Pipestone.
They spent their wedding night at
the first rest stop west of Sioux Falls
on I-90 in the back of their Blazer.
“It was economical,” Peggy said
with a laugh.
The truth is they planned to spend
their wedding night at a motel in
Sioux Falls and continue on to their
honeymoon destination in Rapid
City the next day. Unfortunately, the
motel lost their reservations and had
no vacancies, so they decided to forget motels and sleep in the Blazer.
“It’s kind of a funny story,” Peggy
said, “but at the time it was not.”
The story is an example of what
the Taubert’s say is the key to a
happy marriage — don’t sweat the
small stuff, take it one day at a time
and keep the line of communication
open.
“It’s not all fun and games,” Peggy
said. “You’ve got to work through it.”
They both attended the Pipestone
Vocational School (now Minnesota
West), Matt for ag banking and Peggy
for secretarial work. Matt then went
on to Mankato State University (now
Minnesota State University), studied
accounting, “and was supported by
my wife while I was in school,” he
said.

Tauberts

After some moving around
they soon settled back in Pipestone to be closer to their
families. Matt began working
for Dave Meulebroeck in 1983,
where he is now a partner,
and Peggy started working at
O’Neill O’Neill and Barduson
as a secretary about two weeks
later — a job she still holds today.
“We don’t do change real
well,” Matt said.
They waited 10 years after
they married to have children
— until they were through the
broke, college-student phase
when they were shopping for
the best deal on macaroni and
cheese, Matt said. Eventually
they had two children, Colin,
21, and Abbey, 18.
While some might scoff at
people who marry right out
of high school, the Tauberts
know they made the right decision.
“I wouldn’t go back and
change anything if I could,”
Matt said.
“It’s been 32 good years,”
Peggy said.

NewsUSA — You want
everything to be picture
perfect for your wedding,
including your smile. But
like everything else about
your big day, that perfect
smile could require some
work ahead of time. In fact,
experts suggest starting
your entire beauty regimen
six months before the
wedding.
Here’s a complete prewedding beauty checklist.
•Lips: Get soft, kissable
lips by brushing away flakes
of dry skin with an infant
toothbrush soaked in baking
soda and water. Apply
healing ointment, and in no
time, your lips will be ready
for that “kiss the bride” kiss.
•Teeth:
A
cosmetic
dentist can often correct
an imperfect smile with
veneers. But if spending
painful hours in the
dentist’s chair getting your
teeth ground down sounds
like it would put a damper

on all the joyful planning,
here’s good news: Lumineers
(www.lumineers.com)
are
now used by thousands of
dentists nationwide and can
be applied in two short, painfree appointments.
Unlike
other
veneer
procedures, Lumineers are so
strong and thin that they don’t
require removal of sensitive
tooth structure. The procedure
is quick, painless and even
reversible.
•Makeup: Women with
warm skin tones look best
in makeup with pink, coral,
peach, amber, brown and red
with yellow undertones. If you
have a cool skin tone, choose
pink, berry, lilac, mauve or red
with blue undertones.
•Skin: Make your face
glow with a good cleansing
program. Use a cleanser that’s
appropriate for your skin
type in the morning, makeup
remover and cleanser at night
and a daily moisturizer. Use
a gentle facial scrub once a
week.
•Hair: If you’re planning
to change your hairstyle or
color, experiment several
months before the wedding so
you have time to correct any
mistakes.
•Nails: If you’re a nail-biter,
get weekly manicures to keep
your nails healthy. Plan your
last manicure a couple of days
before the big day. Choose a
pretty pale pink or splurge on
a French manicure, not just
because it looks great, but
because the chips won’t show
as much and are easy to fix.
You’ll have beautiful hands for
the rehearsal dinner and any
other festivities.
Don’t forget, practice makes
perfect. Schedule a trial run
with your hair and makeup
artists several days before
your wedding, so there are
no surprises the day of the
ceremony.

There’s no such thing as perfect
But small gestures and
dedication go a long way
By Kyle Kuphal
There
is
perhaps
nothing more romantic
a husband can do for his
wife than get an airbrush
tattoo of her name with
a heart around it on his
bicep.
Tom Newgard did just
that two years ago when
he and his wife Sandi were
on a cruise in the Bahamas
with their children.
“He thought he was so
smart,” Sandi said. “The
kids thought it was so
funny.”
“That’s probably as
good as I get,” Tom said.
Their marriage might
not be a romantic fairytale,
but it’s still going strong
after 36 years.
They met in tenth grade
typing class at Pipestone
High School in the early
1970s. Tom asked a friend
of Sandi’s to ask her out for
him, but she was dating
someone else and turned
him down.
“But it wasn’t long after
that I thought maybe I do
like him more than this
guy,” Sandi said.
She still remembers
their first date. They went
to a movie at Pipestone’s
old Sunset Drive-In theater
on the east side of town.
Newgards

graduation money in 1974. He bought the $111 ring and proposed the day after they graduated

Their relationship grew quickly
and they began talking about
getting married while they were
still in high school.
“I think I always felt different
about him than other guys,” Sandi
said. “My mom said she always
knew.”
The day after they graduated
in 1974 Tom spent all $111 of
his graduation money on an
engagement ring.

Tom and Sandi Newgard reflect on
marrying just out of high school.
There have been some difficult times
during their 36 years of marriage,
they said, but it’s only brought
them closer together. Pipestone

school sweethearts getting
married but how about fourth
grade sweethearts.
Dave and Becky Foster of
Jasper is one such couple.
“It started in fourth grade,”
Becky said. “That was when we
were first introduced.”
Becky was a farm girl and
attended rural school until it
closed after she finished third
grade. So it was the start of the
fourth grade year she began
attending school in town.
Becky’s older brother and
sister, who had already been
attending school in town,
introduced them.
“My brother and sister
knew the older Foster boys and
my sister warned me about a
younger brother,” Becky said.
From that first introduction
on, Dave and Becky were a
couple.
Although they were in
the same grade they never
had the same teacher during
elementary school.
“I’m not sure if that was by
design or if it just happened,”
Becky said.

Tips for
brides on
budgets
Pipestone, MN
NewsUSA — Between the
thrilling proposal and the prewedding whirlwind – setting the
date, finding the perfect wedding
dress, planning the honeymoon –
weddings should feel joyous and
romantic.
But after the wedding, couples
should enjoy their newly wedded
bliss – not panic about digging
themselves out of debt.
According to the Association
for
Wedding
Professionals
International,
the
average
wedding costs between $18,000
and $21,000.
In these difficult economic
times, couples might need
to minimize the cost of their
wedding. But brides on budgets
do not need to whittle their guest
list from 200 to 10.
Here are some affordable – and
tasteful – measures couples can
take to stay within their budget.
What eats up wedding cash?
Wedding
receptions
usually
account for half of a wedding’s
cost. Dinner and drinks add up,
especially if couples pay for a full
or open bar.
To save money on the bubbly,
couples should nix the mixed
drinks. Soon-to-be-marrieds can
serve champagne during the toast,
then offer beer and wine for the
rest of the evening. Give clumsier
guests white wine, not red, and
the evening should progress with
fewer mishaps at a lower cost.
For dinner, couples should think
outside the catering-company
box. Local restaurants might make
better deals. Classy catering can
come from unexpected places.
Boston Market restaurants
provide
full-service
catering
options with elegant entrées
like roasted sirloin, turkey or
rotisserie chicken, and a selection
of gourmet sides. The cost? From
$14.99 to $21.99 a head.
After the reception, photography
and videography are the second
largest budget-breakers. Couples
can hire a photographer and
videographer for the ceremony,
then leave reception photographs
to friends, family and digital
cameras.
To avoid the cost of a live band,
brides and grooms can opt for
MP3 playlists, customized CDs
and speaker rentals over pricey
bands.
Finally, hiring a wedding
coordinator can save time, manage
stress and get better deals.
So, here’s a toast to tweaking
old traditions to make a dream
wedding financially attainable
– and to save enough money for
a long, relaxing honeymoon.
Cheers!

Lost loves united –
in more ways than one
By Debra Fitzgerald
This is an awesome story.
The story of Glenn
Johnson, 66, and Sally
Jersey Johnson, 69, who
were married Aug. 14 in
Pipestone at the American
Legion surrounded by good
friends and a substantial
family that numbers nine
children between them, 20
grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
They intend to migrate
between Glenn’s home in
Pipestone, a place he owns
in Texas on the Mexican
border, another place in
Rapid City and a trailer
they intend to buy to park
between here and North
Dakota, where Sally’s close
ties reside.
Sally said their life
together is going to be
an adventure and she’s
looking forward to their
cross-country,
seasonal
migration.
“When you’re younger,

you have to have these
things,” Sally said. “When
you get older, things are
things and you realize there’s
only a couple of things that
are important: your family,
your love, good health and
to be able to be yourself. I
like that I can be myself and
Glenn can be himself and
we’re not going to change
each other — because he’s
a stubborn Norwegian and
I’m a bullheaded German,”
she said, laughing.
Glenn had been divorced
for 20 years before marrying
Sally. Did he think he’d ever
get married again at 66
years of age?
“You know, it’s funny,” he
said. “I’m not really religious

going to happen, it would happen.
And I’d look up at my pictures
on the wall. And there she was,
hanging up there…”
Why Sally’s picture was
hanging on Glenn’s wall
Though Sally and Glenn are
beginning their life together on the
cusp of their twilight years, their
story actually started more than
50 years ago in the small town of
Jamestown, N.D. when Glenn was
a 16-year-old high school student
and Sally, 19, recently graduated.
“I’m a cougar,” Sally said, smiling
mischievously when talking about
the disparity in their ages. “It grabs
younger men,” Glenn explained
when the reporter looked puzzled
by her comment.
They dated for quite awhile
when Sally became pregnant.
Rather than tell Glenn, she left
North Dakota for Minneapolis.
“He was 16, I was older, and I
didn’t think he should be saddled
with a child at his age; that was a
lot of responsibility for a 16-year
old,” she said.
Glenn wasn’t the only person
Continued from page 14
who didn’t know about the
pregnancy. Sally didn’t tell a
soul, not her parents, siblings or
best friends. She met a man in
Minneapolis and had the baby.
The man became her husband
and promised to care for both his
new wife and infant — a promise
he did not keep.
“It was a very, very bad
relationship,” Sally said. “Part of
it was because I married him for
some other reason than love.”
Sally, recognizing she had
married the wrong man, decided
to give her three-month-old baby
girl up for adoption. A couple
from Morris, Minn. adopted the
baby whose eyes were the purest
emerald green Sally said she’d ever
seen — thus the child’s first name,
Julia.
She had fled Glenn and given up
her baby and married the wrong
man. But no matter how things
would become, Sally kept a secret
warmth in her heart kindled by
that first love Glenn had inspired
in her, a love she treasured all the
years of her life.
“It was like a comfort to me, a

comfort I had known so long ago,”
she said. “And even if I never met
him again, it was always there.
It was almost like a teddy bear
or a blanket. It was just a good
feeling.”
Meanwhile, a hurt and puzzled
Glenn moved on with his life after
Sally’s sudden disappearance. He
joined the Army when he was 17,
got married, and proceeded to
have six children — five daughters
and one son, all who went to
Pipestone Area Schools.
Sally’s smooth skin subtracts
years off her age, but wisdom
shines through her words and
demeanor, which seemed to come
from a place of peaceful resolution
— with good reason, turns out.
“I had kind of a ho-hum life,
kind of satisfied, kind of happy, but
something was still missing,” she
said: the daughter she had given
up for adoption. So Sally set out to
find her, a process she described
as an ordeal. To make a long story

told her I’d come up there,” Sally
said. “I did that because she’d
have her friends around her and
she could tell me whatever she
wanted to say to me; if she hated
me. Whatever she said, however
she accepted me — because you
don’t know in a situation like that
— I wanted her to have people
around her to support her.”
Kathy was three months old
when she was adopted and
32-years-old when she met her
birth mother for the first time. “I
met her and it was like we were
never apart,” Sally said.
It was 16 years ago when that
first meeting took place. Sally
decided to let Glenn know what
she couldn’t say when they were
teenagers.
“I knew Kathy would want to
meet her father but I didn’t know
if he was married; I didn’t want
to disrupt his life,” Sally said. “So
I had my cousin Linda and her
husband, Harry, good friends
of Glenn, tell him so he could
figure out what to do with that
information.”
Glenn’s reaction? “I figured after
all those years that’s why she left;
because there was a baby,” Glenn
said. “So when they told me, I was
not surprised at all.”
Glenn was thrilled, in fact, and
called Kathy immediately.
“I talked to her for quite awhile
on the phone,” Glenn said. “She
said her and her fiancée were
going to go to Rapid City for skiing.
So I called Sally and said, ‘Kathy’s
going to Rapid City. If I send you
a ticket, will you fly out so we can
meet her together.’”
Kathy may have been the reason
why Sally left Glenn all those years
ago, but she was now the reason
they came back together.
“I didn’t recognize her,” Glenn
said, when he picked Sally up at
the Sioux Falls airport to drive her
to Rapid City.
“I used to be real skinny with
blonde hair,” Sally said. “And he
used to look like that picture up
there,” she said, laughing, pointing
to a picture on the wall of a young
and fit Glenn as he appeared when
he first enlisted in the Army at 17.
“We met her together and Kathy
said she was getting married and
she asked me to give her away,”
Glenn said. “So that worked out
really good. I gave all my daughters
away at their weddings.”
When the visit ended, Sally
and Glenn parted, Sally back to

grade school, then high school,
she said, there were some bumps
and bruises along the way but
that didn’t matter.
After graduating in 1975,
David went off to college in
Mankato and Becky got a job in
St. Peter, twelve miles away.
David ended up quitting
college and moved back to Jasper
and Becky followed suit, quitting
her job and moving back also.
The couple got married in
1979, and then four years later
the first of two daughters was
born. Their daughters are Laura
and Marie.
Becky said she and David had
a small wedding. “That’s what
we wanted,” she said.
The couple continues to live
in Jasper where David works as
a rural mail carrier and Becky
continues to work at EROS Data
Center near Garretson, S.D. She
has worked there for 33 years.
While there have been some
bumps along the way, this longterm romance continues after 31
years of marriage.
California, where she lived with
her two children and second
husband, Bill Jersey. Glenn, a
long-haul trucker for 38 years, was
divorced from a 30-year marriage
that produced his six children.
But, “Sally was still married,”
Glenn said.
“And there was a lot of things
going on at that time,” Sally said.
“So I kind of left it alone,” Glenn
finished.
But from that visit, a picture was
taken of Glenn, Sally and Kathy.
He hung the picture upon his wall
with the other family photos.
The final reunion
Newgards
Continued from page 11
“He went and bought a ring
and came driving up to my
house and just kind of handed
it to me,” Sandi said. “It wasn’t
romantic. He’s not really that
kind of a person.”
One month later on June
15, they were married at First
Lutheran Church in Pipestone.
There was no time for a
honeymoon because Tom started
work at Bayliner two days later.
They quickly learned that
marriage is a bumpy road when
Sandi made breakfast for Tom
before he left for work one
morning — it was the first meal
she’d ever made for him.
“He had to get up really
early to go to work at Bayliner,
so I thought, well, I’ve got to
be a good wife and make him
breakfast, so I made eggs with
toast and bacon,” Sandi said.
She made it all just the
way she liked it — hard eggs,
crispy bacon and dark toast.
Unfortunately, Tom likes his
eggs runny, his bacon not crispy
and light toast.
“He was like, what is this,”
Sandi said. “So of course I cried
and I don’t think I made him
breakfast again for a while.”
Eventually, Sandi started
asking Tom what he wanted for
meals, then calling her mom
to ask how to make it. After a
while, she said, she became a
pretty good cook — a trait that
has served her well since they
bought the Dari King about 10
years ago.
For many years their lives
centered on their five children —
Wendi, 35, Kerri, 32, TJ, 28, Kati,
24, and Wade 22 — and there
was little time to spend alone
together.
Now that the kids are grown
and out of the house, Sandi
said she and Tom enjoy quiet
evenings sipping Champagne in
their hot tub. And Tom does have
a romantic side, she said, and
often does the cooking in the
winter when he’s not farming.
When they were married just
out of high school, many people
told them it would never last,
and to be sure it hasn’t always
been easy.
“There’s tough stuff, but
you’ve got to work through it,”
Sandi said. “Nothing’s ever going
to be perfect.”
If couples can accept that and
work at their marriage, Sandi
said, she thinks they’ll only
become better friends as the
years go by — at least that’s been
the case with her and Tom.
More time passed. Sally’s
husband died and she returned
to North Dakota when her brother
became ill. Glenn learned of the
news from their daughter, Kathy,
and began calling Sally again.
And when he returned to his
hometown to visit his siblings,
he’d let Sally know and she’d meet
him and visit.
But their relationship remained
strictly a friendship — until the
spring of 2010 when his brother
asked him if he wanted to take
a vacation to Branson, Mo. with
a few other people. Something
clicked inside Glenn.
“I look at the pictures on my
wall all the time and I thought,
‘I’m going to call Sally up and see
what she’s doing.’ She said she’d
go.”
They met Glenn’s brother
and sister in Sioux Falls and his
brother told them to jump into the
van where six of them would head
over to Branson. Instead, Glenn
opted to drive a separate car with
only Sally as a passenger. As fate
would have it, something clicked
for Sally as well.
“That was the best trip,” Glenn
said. “Six hundred miles down
there and I couldn’t keep her quiet.
All she did is talk and talk. We were
together five days and that’s what
really brought us together.”
They became so re-connected
that they decided to make it
official a few short months later.
And the rest is history.
What was different during that
final Branson trip that brought
them together?
“I suppose we were older, but
there was always something in
our hearts for each other all these
years,” Glenn said. “There always
had been.”
“One thing I never forgot was he
treated me, even at 16, better than
any man has ever treated me,”
Sally said. “Even when we started
getting reacquainted with each
other; he treated me like a real
lady. And I was very impressed
with that.”
Glenn and Sally are back in
each other’s hearts and lives, a
transition their children have
made even easier with their
complete acceptance of the
newlyweds — and the feeling is
mutual.
“I saw them kids (Glenn’s) and
boy oh boy, I just had a heartful
of love for them right away,” Sally
said.
One of Glenn’s daughters
married them and all of his
children gave him away to Sally.
“Everything went so good,”
Glenn said. “It was a small
wedding, but it was all family;
and that means a lot. It brought
everybody together.”

AWAY THE STRESSES
OF WEDDING
PLANNING
NewsUSA — An engagement
ring symbolizes your promise
to love and cherish your partner
forever, and shows the world your
commitment to your fiancée.
Many women dream about their
engagement ring their entire lives,
so choosing the right style is of
utmost importance.
Here are some tips to ease the
pressure of finding the ring and
proposing:
It’s Not Only About
the Diamond
A ring’s setting is as important
as its diamond because the setting
is what displays and secures the
stone. Platinum provides an ideal
setting as it is stronger than other
precious metals, which means
that you don’t have to worry
about losing the center stone with
everyday wear. Also, platinum is a
naturally white metal, allowing the
diamond to sparkle even brighter.
Did you know that a platinum
engagement ring will last forever?
Since platinum is so durable and
loses little metal over time, the
ring will undoubtedly become
a family heirloom that can be
passed down for generations to
follow. And platinum engagement
rings are surprisingly affordable.
Contrary to popular belief, they
are available in a wide range of
price points, starting at around
$1,000 at BlueNile.com.
Know Her Style
Before you go to the jewelry
store, know your future fianceé’s

style, personality and lifestyle
since there is a ring to suit her
perfectly. For example, a woman
with a hands-on job, like nursing,
might prefer a simple band with
a secure setting, while a woman
who has a less active job might
want something more intricate.
A woman with classic style will
want a different band design than
a trend-setting fashionista.
“A classic polished platinum
band from Michael Barin will suit
a girl with more traditional tastes,
while a birth stone of colored
diamonds on an embellished
band like one from Suna Bros.
will look bold and unique,” says
jewelry and style expert Michael
O’Connor. “To figure out her ring
size, press one of your girlfriend’s
rings in a bar of soap until it leaves
a mark. You can also put one of
her rings on your own hand, mark
where it falls on your finger and
have the jeweler measure that
area,” suggests O’Connor.
How to Propose
Some women want a public
proposal in front of friends
and family, while others want
something private and special.
In either case, your fiancée will
remember the day for the rest of
her life. Think about what your
fiancée likes, and where and
how you met. For more tips on

charitable giving, offers the
following tips for couples hoping
to give back even as they celebrate
their union:
•Put charities on your wedding
registry.
Instead
of
listing
KitchenAid stand mixers and
new cutlery on your registry, ask
guests to donate to charitable
causes that are meaningful
to you as their wedding gift.
For example, their Web site,
w w w. m y c h a r i t a b l e w e d d i n g .
org, allows couples to create
wedding gift registries that
name the organizations that
they want to benefit. A pair of
animal lovers might name the
American Humane Society, while
tree-huggers might ask guests
to donate to Greenpeace or the
Sierra Club. You may select your
favorites from CharityChoice’s
broad list of organizations. You can
also have a personalized Web page
and e-invitations and download
graphic themes for your printer.
•Waste not, want not. Find
ways to reduce the amount of
waste generated by your big day.
For example, print invitations
on recycled paper or donate
any leftover food to a local food
rescue. Encourage bridesmaids
to donate their dresses, perhaps
to an organization that provides
prom dresses to impoverished
high-school students. You can
even donate your wedding flowers
to hospitals or nursing homes,
where they’ll be sure to brighten
someone’s day.
•Give donations as wedding
favors. Instead of providing
standard wedding favors, give
your guests a charity gift card.
You can pre-select a list of causes
that are especially meaningful to
you or allow recipients to choose
from a larger list of over a hundred
major charities. The charities
are organized into 13 different
categories, including children’s
charities, causes for health and
disease and environmental and
disaster-relief organizations, so
every recipient will be able to find
a cause that is close to their heart.
