RANKIN HALL VANDALIZED
On the night of July 25, 2010 our beautiful Rankin Hall was vandalized. Glass was
broken and the interior was spray painted, especially the Chapel. Local thugs are
suspected. A reward has been offered by the Atchison County Crime Stoppers
organization, but we have heard of no results.
Shortly, you will be notified of an effort to become part of what will happen to our
campus in the future. It will be up to us whether we accept this challenge or whether we
are content to sit back and watch our campus be destroyed piece-by-piece.
IT IS UP TO YOU!

PILLOW TOP AVAILABLE
If you have any interest in having a quilt block or
pillow top for making a memory quilt or sofa pillow,

Meet Your New Board Members
WAYNE GELSTON ‘71
In 1971 I graduated after having earned my BA in Theatre and being a proud member
of Alpha Sigma Phi. I have supported all of the alumni functions.
Last year I retired from the Union Railroad Company, a subsidiary of United States
Steel Corporation with 36 years service where I first worked as a Junior Clerk and then
as a Yard Master. I also worked for the Pittsburgh Public Theatre and the Civic Light
Opera’s development office.
In 1978 I met my best friend Karen; we married in 1979. We have two sons, Justin
(29) and Scott (27). Justin has Cystic Fibrosis and had a double lung transplant last fall.
He is doing very well. Justin and his wife, April, have given us a foster grandson,
Nicholas (five); and Scott and his wife, Renee, have given us a granddaughter, Abigale
(seven months).
I was involved with the original Phoenix Group and I am honored to be on the
Alumni Committee to serve you.
GRETCHEN HUMMEL INGRAM ‘75
I grew up in Rockford, Ill. I went to Robert Morris College for one year. I came to
Tarkio in 1972 and graduated in 1975; then I moved to Kansas City, Missouri. There I
got a degree in education and taught in the Kansas City, Missouri School District for
many years.
I have a son in Denver and a daughter and her family live in Florida. I’m a proud
grandparent of two grandchildren.
I want to serve on the Alumni Board because I’m very interested in keeping the
college memories alive and keeping the alumni involved.
Fellow TC alumni,
I appreciate the opportunity and challenge to serve as the president of our alumni
association. I am looking forward to the challenges and opportunities we will encounter
as an organization in the next few years. I would like to thank Roger Claypool, pastpresident, for his efforts in leading our group. I truly feel that the Tarkio College
experience is special. I often think that I should have been more involved for the many
years I took my TC experience for granted. Special relationships, friendships, and a
common bond of service and loyalty. I think we all feel that when we attend an event or
are reminded of our time at Tarkio College. My goal is to forge a stronger unity among
the alumni of Tarkio College and to connect with more alums. I would urge all of you to
pay your dues, and participate in some way in our alumni activities including the annual
alumni weekend. Thank you for your support!
Joe Farley ‘81
President
ALUMNI WEEKEND 2010
What a beautiful weekend we had! If you weren’t there, we missed you. We hope you
will join us in 2011. Please note that the Weekend has been moved to one week later,
June 24-26, so we won’t interfere with Father’s Day.
We were blessed with great weather for the entire weekend. —no wild and woolly
mid-west thunderstorms. We had record crowds at all events. A special shout-out goes to
Sarah Rankin Seim, Rayma Ricker Brown and Peggy Falusi Bohne for organizing the
50-year class. Thanks also go to Hall of Famer Charlie Parker ’73 for treating us all to a
special feast on Friday night.
We were honored to have the families of Hobart and George Lewis ’40, ’42 join us
4
for the weekend. They had asked us to provide a special memorial service for these two
charter members of our Athletic Hall of Fame, which we were happy to do. We thank
Pastor Rachel Lancey of Tarkio Presbyterian for conducting the memorial service. Other
family members of the 1940 NAIB championship team were present to greet the Lewis
family: the family Coach Newt Kyle and teammate James Arneal ’42. We read a greeting
from G. Lloyd Martin ’41, the only surviving member of the team. This was a very
special and moving part of the weekend. A thank you from the Lewis family follows.
Pictures of the entire weekend may be found on our website at
www.tarkioalumni.org. Many pictures may be purchased.
Honored classes for 2011 are: 1941, 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976,
1981, 1986 and 1991. If you can help us contact members of your class, please contact
us at [email protected] or call 660 736 4218.
You are invited to make your nominations for all honors. Check out our website for
the rules and for the scholarship application also. This is a substantial scholarship made
possible by those who pay their dues!
Thank You From Lewis Family
The George and Hobart Lewis families at the museum: (left to right) Jane Lewis Johnson
(Hobart’s daughter), Deana Lewis Walker (Hobart’s daughter), Chuck Johnson, Jack Lewis
(George’s son), Greg Lewis (George’s son), Aaron Lewis (Greg’s son), Rachel Gross (Greg’s
daughter), Janet Lewis, wife of Jack.
On June 17-18, a Hall of Fame weekend was held for a small college in Tarkio,
Missouri. It was a time for classmates to see and hear from the latest members entering
into the Tarkio College Hall of Fame. It was a time to reminisce, and a time to learn of
great news about the future of the college.
For the Lewis family it was a time for a final good bye to two members from the
Basketball National Champions and Charter Members of the Hall of Fame: George E.
Lewis and Hobart E. Lewis.
On behalf of the Lewis family, I want to convey to the Tarkio Alumni Association our
deepest gratitude for the opportunity to have a service at the gymnasium during your
weekend. It was fun to hear stories of them during their school years.
Although we are not alumni, Tarkio College will always be dear to our family.
Thanks again,
Jack Lewis

IN THE NEWS
Maxine Mehaffey Arneal ’45 was featured in the North Bend NE Eagle with an
article on February 3, 2010 honoring her 60-year membership in PEO.
We’re late with this news, but news of a birthday card shower for Janett Evans Adams
’52 was announced in the Tarkio Avalanche in June. We bet she would still enjoy hearing
from you, so cards are still welcome at 711 Broad Street, Tarkio, MO 64491.
Vince Else ’58 was inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame in February and was
featured in the Corning, IA paper with an article and picture. He and his wife were honored
for their 50-year dedication to their Share-A-Toy program. Congratulations, Vince!
Sydney Pearce Cooper ’62 got lots of press for her retirement from teaching music in
the Tarkio Public School System after 48 years. There was a big article in the Tarkio
Avalanche and then she was also featured on KMA Radio in Shenandoah.
Gary Bussard ’63 got his picture in the paper too for helping with the Shoes for
Orphan Souls program through Rotary International.
Johnny Wilcox ’60 made the Tarkio Avalanche twice this past year. First, with his
appearance as part of “Kiss” at the Celebrity Waiter Dinner fund raiser for the Fairfax
Community Hospital and later as one of the workers who cleaned up the campus for Alumni
Weekend. Thanks, Johnny, for you service to the community. You represent us well.
Congratulations, Sydney.
Mary Beth Rhoades Bredensteiner ’71 and Carla Summa ‘91 were also featured in
the local Tarkio paper for their work in cleaning up the campus. Thanks, ladies.

In last year’s Phoenix, we outlined Bob Doran’s ’69 remembrances of John Denver
being on campus. This article brought a response from Gene Skakin ’66 who said he
thought Denver was on campus in either 1964 or 1965. Your editor graduated in 1965,
but doesn’t remember this at all. Gene said he also remembered both the Kingston Trio
and the Inkspots being on campus. Now, I remember Cab Calloway playing a
Homecoming Dance! There was another major swing band there one other year, but my
memory fails me (nothing unusual these days!) Any other good memories out there?
MYSTERY SOLVED!
In last year’s Phoenix we were looking for the identification of children’s author
Hippie Bob. Bob Novic ’67 sent us the answer, and we thank him. Just proves
somebody is reading our efforts there! Hippie Bob is Robert B. Hunter ’70 and his
wife is Diane Cliffe ’72. Read more about him at [email protected].
MOTEL PLAN NOT TO BE
We are sorry to inform you that despite all of our efforts over a two-year period, we
have been unable to secure a new motel plan for you. We are just too small a player to
be included in the big boys promotional efforts. If you know of a legitimate fund raising
effort that we might consider, please let us know. Again, our apologies. We tried!

We always receive Christmas
greetings from several alums. Larry and
Lavina McKee Pattee ’57 are living in
Big Lake. MN. They had been cruising
in the Baltic and had met up with Schutz
friends in Norway. Lavina had also been
to Disney World with daughter and
grandchildren. They also went to a
Schutz reunion in July. (We would like
to get more info on this reunion for
future publications.) They got to see the
Macy Thanksgiving Day parade with
family.

those in the early ‘60’s. We are grateful
for his work.

would not be attending her 70th reunion.
Peggy Kelly Brown ’40 did send us a
note she was attending, and we were
delighted to see her. Check out her
picture under the Classes on our website,
www.tarkioalumni.org. She remains very
active, golfing twice a week, working in
her church, doing crosswords and
working in a homeless shelter! She sent
an amusing quote that said when she was
in school the Torch ran an ad saying
“Tarkio College: an education, a job and
a mate in four years or your money
back.” Since she got all three, she
remains grateful to Tarkio College! She
also thanked the Board for their
continued work in keeping the
Association alive.
Ruth Ellen Keller ’40 also sent us a
picture and letter saying she wouldn’t be
at the reunion and bringing us up-to-date
on her life. She retired as the personal
secretary to the CEO of Flint CO. She is
a legacy member of PEO and enjoys
cruising.
We also heard from Beverly Bennett
Held ’40 that she couldn’t come either,
but she did marry one of the professors,
McDonald Held so she was another one
that met the Torch ad! She commented
on TC’s fine reputation.
Beatrice E. McPherson, widow of
Hall of Famer Paul “Mac” McPherson
’41 sent regrets that she could not attend
the memorial service for the Lewis
brothers. She commented that her
husband was close to the Lewis boys as

DOES THIS MAKE YOU ANGRY OR WHAT???
When searching the Internet for news, your editor came upon this site: FAKE
MISSOURI DEGREE PACKAGE. Guess who was listed there? You’re right! We are!!
What an insult to those of us who earned legitimate degrees from our noble institution.
Does anyone out there know how to stop this? Your editor knows of at least one person
who never attended Tarkio College claiming to be a graduate.
