Athletics Media Relations
To The Media
It is our goal that you find this publication useful while covering
Indiana State University’s 2007 football team. Every effort has been
made to include timely and pertinent information.
Additional requests by accredited media representatives for
items such as color photography, electronic highlights, feature
material, etc., should be directed to our office. It is our purpose
to serve you.
Credentials
Requests for working press, radio, television and photographer
passes should be made as early as possible to:
Ace Hunt
Assistant Director for Athletics Media Relations
Indiana State University
567 North Fifth Street, Room A-15
Terre Haute, IN 47809
FAX: (812) 237-4157
Credentials may be picked up in the Media Relations office
prior to the first game, thereafter they will be left at Memorial
Stadium Media Will Call. Credentials must be made visible at all
times for proper identification by Indiana State security personnel.
Weekly print media and non-reporting radio-TV representatives
have least priority to media reservations. Likewise, we are unable
to accommodate children, spouses or other nonworkers.
Photo / Sideline Credentials
Follow the same procedure as used in requesting press box
credentials. A credential must be designated photo for access to
field level.
Media Will Call
The Memorial Stadium Media Will Call is located at the West
gate area of the stadium. Credentials may be picked up 90 minutes
prior to game time.
Press Box
Entrance: The entrance to the Memorial Stadium press box is
via the elevator located on the west side of the stadium, directly
across from main gate.
Layout: The Memorial Stadium press box is a single-level facility.
The main area is reserved for print media personnel. There are
separate booths for radio and television networks, coaches and
the official stat crew. Film crews are asked to use the photo deck
atop the press box.
Radio Networks: The originating station for each team’s radio
network is provided a booth from which to broadcast. Phone lines
are provided in the visitor’s radio booth on a reciprocal basis.
Television: Should a station wish to originate live coverage of
a game, a broadcast booth will be provided to the originating
network. All telecasts must have the approval of the Indiana State
University Athletics Director.
Coaches Booth: Home and visiting coaching staffs are provided
a booth, seating four persons, from which to work.
Pressbox Roof: An open air photo deck is located on the pressbox
roof. Secondary radio broadcasts may also be placed on the roof
due to space limitations.
Sideline: Indiana State follows NCAA regulations regarding
media representatives on the sidelines. Photographers are not
permitted to shoot between the 25-yard lines and must display
their credentials at all times. Media may not work inside the team
areas at any time. Representatives from the Indiana State Athletics
Department will be responsible for sideline control.
2
Media Parking
There is no designated media parking area at Memorial Stadium. However, there is ample parking available near the press
box entrance.
Press Box Services
Statistical and informational materials including pre-game notes,
flip cards and gameday programs will be distributed in the press box
prior to game time. Two telephone lines are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Play-by-play, complete quarter, halftime
and final game statistics and drive charts will be available shortly
after the game. A light meal and beverages will be available to
accredited media one hour prior to game time. Beverages will
be available throughout the game. In-game live statistics will be
provided to live electronic broadcast outlets. The Indiana State
football press box is equipped with wireless internet technology, with
which users may acquire guest access to the university’s broadband
internet server while working.
Post-Game Procedure
Prior to the end of the contest, Assistant SID Ace Hunt will collect
media requests. Media will be escorted to field level with five (5)
minutes remaining on the fourth quarter clock. Coach West will be
available in the Sycamore media room below the press box on
ground level. The opposing coach and two selected players will
follow Coach West. Selected ISU players will then be escorted to
the media room for interview opportunities.
Radio Information
Radio contract requests and information should be directed to
the Indiana State Athletics Media Relations Office. Stations designated as “official” by visiting opponents will be provided a courtesy
telephone line on press row. All other stations requesting broadcast
space must pay a fee of $50 to Indiana State University and will be
accommodated on the press box roof.
Player Interview Policy
All requests for player interviews must be made through the
Media Relations office. Players have been instructed to conduct
no interviews unless they have been set up in this manner. The
interviews generally will be conducted after practice at Memorial
Stadium. Players generally are available throughout the week with
the exception of game days. Requests for telephone interviews will
be handled by players returning phone calls to the media. No
home telephone numbers will be given out.
Interviews with Coach Lou West
Interviews with Coach Lou West may be arranged through the
Athletics Media Relations Office by calling (812) 237-4159. It is best
to arrange phone interviews during the morning. If you are unable
to speak with Coach West during the mornings, he is available
to talk to the media directly after the conclusion of practice at
Memorial Stadium.

2007 Indiana State Football — The Gateway Football Conference
5
2007 Season Outlook
It is time to believe. With three years of solid recruiting under his
belt, including this year’s incoming freshman class which may be
the best yet, head coach Lou West has the best ensemble of
players and coaches he has had as he enters his third year at the
helm of the program.
Sycamores over the last two years, the momentum gained by
the program’s first victory since the 2004 season on Homecoming against Missouri State in front of the largest home crowd of
the season, has been enough to sustain the team over the long
off-season.
Tough challenges lie ahead as this year’s team, while talented,
is very young at certain positions. The offense will be led for the
second consecutive year by offensive coordinator Blair Hrovat,
who the defense gets a new look under first-year coordinator
Steve Barrows.
Spring practice was the best in years as new coaches infused
life into the Sycamore returnees. The off-season has seen record
numbers stick around campus to take advantage of the program’s
weight training facilities and get better for the upcoming campaign.
Overall, while the road has been long and challenging for the
“Our guys have really worked hard in the off-season to get in a
better position to compete
this fall,” West commented.
“This team has talent at certain positions, and it is our job
to get the most out of these
players and help them develop in solid Gateway Football
Conference athletes.”
With the pieces in place, and
a solid work ethic exhibited by
returning players, right now it
is time to believe in the Sycamore football program.
OFFENSE
One must ask, how can there
be so much confidence in
an offensive unit that lost a
pair of All-Gateway Football
Conference wide receivers
Carl Berman and Sam Logan
to graduation over the summer.
The answer has to start with
senior quarterback Reilly
Murphy, who burst onto the
scene one year ago and was
a selection of the Gateway’s
All-Newcomer Team one year
ago.
Murphy is coming off a stellar
season that saw him complete 143-of-261 passes with
eight touchdowns. He averaged 196.7 passing yards
per game for a total of 1,770
yards through the air. In addition, Murphy gained 167
rushing yards, scoring a teambest six rushing touchdowns in
moving the team towards the
end zone at a steady clip.

2007 Season Outlook
“Reilly is a smart player, a real leader on offense,” West said. “When he is in there, our offense seems to run smoothly, and he can make
the right decisions at the right time for us.”
Behind Murphy will be redshirt freshman Charles Dowdell, who took a considerable amount of snaps in the spring and will see some
action under center this season. Dowdell is a highly-touted recruit from Fort Wayne, Ind., who earned valuable experience as a redshirt
one season ago. A talented all-around athlete, Dowdell will also see action throughout the season at wide receiver and tailback in an
effort to get him playing time this fall.
Local product Broc Miller, fresh off a solid performance at this past summer’s Wabash Valley Coaches Association All-Star Classic, held
at Memorial Stadium, will enter the program this fall. Miller, who starred at Northview High School, will get a chance in the mix as a
drop-back passer. Also expected to compete for time as the Sycamore signal caller is freshman Shane Parson from Goshen, Ind., as well
as Evan Parker, a sophomore squad member from Merrillville, Ind. Former Terre Haute North Vigo quarterback Matt Seliger will likewise
enter the program as an incoming freshman this fall.
While there may seem to be log-jam of talent at quarterback, one of the riches positions on the entire squad could be tailback, where
there are several options for the Hrovat in the backfield.
Leading the way is senior Tony West, the son of head coach Lou West. West, the player, burst onto the scene with four 100-yard rushing
days in his debut season after transferring into the program from Western Kentucky one season before. He tallied 791 rushing yards with
five touchdowns scored. He also came out of the backfield to catch 17 passes and score another touchdowns off a pass reception.
Behind him is sophomore Robert Barcliff, who tallied 222 rushing yards and a touchdown in eight games played. Barcliff is entering his
third year of work as a Sycamore after sitting out 2005 as a redshirt. One of the early surprises was the play of Darrius Gates, whose
season ended five games in with a severe knee injury. Gates was credited with 20 rushes on the season for 119 yards, an average of
5.9 yards per carry.
Also back this season is senior Bryan McCulley, who earned four rushes last season and is a mainstay on special teams for the Sycamores.
Sound like a full-slate of talent already? It is, but there is more for the Sycamores as they also add the services of junior Pernell Williams,
who saw a great deal of action at West Virginia as a freshman before transferring into the program. Also coming in this year in heralded
recruit Justin Collins from Louisville, Ky., who set virtually every school record and earned various all-state and all-region plaudits as a

senior. Another incoming freshman, Tyler
Williams from Oxford, Ohio will be in the
mix in a Sycamore backfield that is going
to crowded with talent.
“Our tailbacks are going to carry the
load in a variety of ways this season,”
West said. “They are going to be called
upon for heavy work in the rotation, and
they may also see some action at wide
receiver.”
With the departure of Berman and Logan, the Sycamores’ will need all of the
help they can get at the wide receiver
positions in the spread offense this fall.
In addition to each of the tailbacks
seeing action come out of the backfield
to catch passes, there are still several
experienced returnees in the fold.
Headlined by senior Brian Jackson, who
returns 30 pass receptions for 418 yards,
including a long of 55 yards at Purdue.
Jackson also scored a touchdown last
season.
Also back is senior Jerimy Robinson, who
caught 24 passes for 293 yards and a
pair of touchdowns last season. Alex
Thomas was a do-everything guy for
the Sycamores last season as he caught
11 passes for 70 yards while also seeing
time as a kick returner and a tailback as
ISU was thin in the backfield in the later
stages of last season.
Jawann Turner likewise is back after
catching four passes for 35 yards last
season. Sophomore J.R. Kirkendoll also
is back for the Sycamores after catching an 11-yard pass last year while Greg
Hutcherson will see time in the rotation
as well after catching a nine-yard pass
last year.
To add depth to the Sycamore receiving corps, senior Rafael Price will move
over to offense this year after spending
the last two seasons at free safety. Price is the Sycamores’ leading
returning tackler, but will be catching passes instead of defending
them this season.
Adding depth at wide receiver this season for the Sycamores, will be
Verlain Betofe, Brandon Ramsey, Aaron Johnson and Joe Wingis.
“We lost a couple of very talented players at the wide receiver
position, but we have a lot of experience coming back, plus moving
Rafael Price over to offense will be a positive for us,” West commented. “We will be looking for a couple of our experienced guys
to step up and be leaders at wide receiver this season.”
8
After successfully using Jamie Petrowski in 2005, the Sycamore offense did not have a go-to player at the tight end position one
year ago. This year, the Sycamores will utilize transfer Bill McGrath,
who joins the program from Temple while also Eric Monroe will see
action after sitting out 2006 as a redshirt.
The offensive line will be held down by the play of returnees Jack
Byrne, who started six games for the Sycamores last season at right
guard as well left tackle. Also back is senior Zach Odle, who saw
action at left tackle as well, starting eight games last year.
There are holes to fill along the line at left guard, center and right
tackle by the graduated Anthony Bullock as well as Mike Thorpe,
2007 Indiana State Football — The Gateway Football Conference

Brandon Hooks and Fred Staugh.
Sophomore Pat Burke did start the final three
games of the season at right guard for the Sycamores and will be in the mix along the offensive
line this season.
Also returning is junior Jacob Carpenter, who is a
junior from Indianapolis, Ind. Also back is redshirt
freshman Tyler Lamz while senior Matt Winger will
look to make a solid contribution this year as
well.
Another pair of redshirt freshmen Brodie Morris
and Codey Spear, will look to enter the rotation
this fall as well.
Depth will be added along the Sycamore offensive front by Ernie Lee, Derelle Hankins, Michael
McQueen, Josh Jellison, Janssen Hayes, Troy Leinebach and Codey Spear.
“Deep down, I think that the offensive line is our
strong point,” West said. “I think they are so strong
because they all played well last year. This is an
above average group. I think that they will gel this
year, and that will make us a stronger and more
competitive offense.”

2007 Season Outlook
DEFENSE
Quite simply, the Sycamore defense needed an infusion
of energy from coaches and players alike after backto-back sub-par defensive seasons that contributed to
ISU’s struggles on the field.
They have found that with the addition of defensive
coordinator Steve Barrows, who has taken the defensive unit by storm in his first five months on the job
and helped the team moved forward through his first
spring practice.
Barrows comes to ISU from Charleston Southern University, where he helped lead the Buccaneers to the
2005 Big South Championship. In his four seasons as
the defensive coordinator at CSU, he had nine players
receive all-conference honors and helped lead a turnaround from an 1-11 record in 2003 to a 9-2 mark this
past season. Last season, his defense ranked 13th in the
nation in rush defense while also finishing 22nd in the
country in pass defense. His defense helped CSU post a
school-record 14-game winning streak from 2005-06.
Under Barrows, the Sycamores will employ a 3-3-5 defensive scheme that he perfected over the past four
seasons at Charleston Southern. The defense will look to
be a run-stopping machine that will put pressure on the
opposition and hopes to force a lot of turnovers.
Along the three-man defensive front, sophomore Kevin
Wilson will see action at the strong side end position.
Wilson posted four tackles last season in four games of
action. Behind him will be Jon Goodrich while freshmen
Jordan Lewis as well as Jerrelle Bond be relied upon
to solidify this position.
Over on the other side of the defensive line will be
sophomore Daniel Millington, who posted 10 tackles,
with a tackle for loss as the starter on the weak side
heading into camp. Right behind him is sophomore D.J.
MaCarthy, who burst onto the scene with 20 tackles, plus a pair of
fumble recoveries and a forced fumble last season. Adding depth
will be incoming freshman Tim Consaul.
In the middle, at the nose tackle position will be senior Prenny
Stokes, who posted 39 tackles in 11 games of action last season.
Behind him will be Michael McQueen as well as Ben Greffert, who
is an up-and-coming star from Griffith, Ind.
Sophomore Josh Jones, a pure athlete, will see the first snaps of
the fall as the starter at middle linebacker. Jones saw action in 10
games last season, posting eight tackles and breaking up a pass
last season. Behind him will be a trio of newcomers, David Lasiter,
Cody Eslick and Adam Espinoza.
At the right outside linebacker position, senior Brandon Logan, who
is the Sycamores’ leading returning tackler with the defection of
Price over to the offensive side of the ball during the off-season.
10
Logan finished 2006 with 71 total tackles, including a trio of tackles
for loss. Behind Logan will be senior Jayden Everett, who recorded
61 tackles last season, including eight tackles for loss. Freshman
Brandon Pence will likewise add depth to this position.
Over on the other side, the left outside linebacking position belongs
to senior Shonda Faulkner. Last season, Faulkner filled the gap
several positions as he posted 63 tackles in nine games of action.
He recorded six tackles for loss as well as three sacks. Behind him
will be sophomore Jovan McCray, who saw limited action in the
offensive backfield one season ago as well as incoming freshman
Milton Redwine, Jr.
At the spur position, will be senior Bryan Jackson who posted 49
tackles along with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown
last season. Jackson was an ESPN The Magazine Academic AllDistrict selection one year ago. Behind Jackson will be sophomore
Chris Mobley, who posted five tackles and forced a fumble last
season. Also expected to see action at the spur, will be redshirt
freshman Kyle Toney, who moved over to defense after serving
2007 Indiana State Football — The Gateway Football Conference
2007 Season Outlook
as the scout team quarterback last season
as well as sophomore Rodney Dedeaux, who
recorded four total tackles in limited action as
a freshman.
At the bandit position is sophomore Donye
McCleskey, who posted 17 tackles last season
before suffering a season-ending injury just five
games in. McCleskey was off to a stellar start as
he recorded three tackles for loss as well as a
sack, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble
before the injury. He picked up the Gateway’s
Special Teams Player of the Week honor in his
first collegiate game as he blocked a punt
and returned it for a touchdown in the season
opener against Purdue.
Behind McCleskey is junior Kyle Monroe and his
five tackles as well as sophomore Quinton Scott
and incoming freshman Josh Herron.
Redshirt freshman Darrius Middlebrooks enjoyed
the best individual effort of the spring as he
has slid into a starting role as the Sycamores’
free safety. Middlebrooks joined the team as
a walk-on last season and was so impressive
that he has earned a scholarship as well as a
starting position.
Behind Middlebrooks will be senior Dominic
Howard, DeAndre Lott and Larry Mayhew.
At the left corner position will be junior transfer
Ryan Patrick, who joins the program from Ball
State. He spent last season as member of the
scout team. Behind Patrick will be Mike Woods,
Russell Dedeaux and Henry Lemons, who all saw

action last season.
Returning for his senior campaign, after a redshirt season at the
right corner position will be Warren English-Malone. In 2005, Malone
paced the team with three interceptions before sitting out last year.
Behind Malone will be Elliott Thomas, who posted 14 tackles last
season as well as Ejerry Calvert and Aaron Bailey, both incoming
freshmen.
“Our defense has the chance to really turn the corner this season,”
West said. “We had to throw a lot of guys in the fire last season,
and they are going to be very prepared to help us out in a positive way this coming year. Coach Steve Barrows will be a major
addition to our program this season. The players have bought into
his system, and are hungry to compete this fall.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
Gone from the Sycamores this season is the play of Kyle Hooper,
who graduated with several school records, including a new standard of 229 career points.
Joining the fold this season will be incoming freshman Corey Varnadore, who comes into the program from Tallahasee, Fla.
Back this year is punter Chris Johansen, who as a senior will return
for one more trip through the Gateway Football Conference. Last
season, Johansen averaged 37.9 yards per punt, pinning team inside
their own 20-yard line a total of 11 times.
Also back this season is Chad Gregory, who saw action on the
scout team as well as Gabe Mullane, who transferred into the
program from Louisville.
There will be a wide-open competition for all kick returning positions as new coordinator Edmund Jones takes over the range of
the special teams units this fall.
THE SCHEDULE
The Indiana State football schedule always seems to be difficult and
this year will be no different for the Blue and White.
The campaign begins on September 1 with a road trip to Indiana.
The game will be emotionally charged on both sides of the ball as
the Sycamores will look to hit the ground running this season with
its second consecutive season opener against a member of the
Big Ten, while the Hoosiers will be playing their first game since the
off-season death of former head coach Terry Hoeppner. Hoeppner
will be replaced this season by Bill Lynch.
“Coach Hoeppner was such a battler, we all thought he would get
through his problems and come out swinging,” West said. “His loss
is so great not only for Indiana University, but for the entire state
as well as the game of football. Our thoughts and prayers are with
their program, and we look forward to the challenge of this season
opener versus the Hoosiers.”
The home portion of the schedule begins on September 8 when ISU
hosts Austin Peay for the first time since 1999. APSU is returning to
scholarship football this season and will be joining the Ohio Valley
Conference in the coming years.
Two other OVC teams dot the next two weeks of the schedule as
the Sycamores travel to Southeast Missouri State on September 15
while hosting Eastern Illinois on September 22.
12
The always tough Gateway Football Conference schedule begins
on September 29 with a battle against Southern Illinois which will
be followed up by a visit from Western Illinois.
After going to Illinois State, the Sycamores will take a break from
GFC play to host Western Kentucky on Homecoming. The Sycamores
won their 2006 Homecoming match-up against Missouri State by a
score of 28-22 and will look to secure back-to-back Homecoming
victories for the first time in the last few years.
Following the match-up against the Hilltoppers, the Sycamores will
round-out the regular season with a visit to face off against the
Bears before returning home against Youngstown State and then
concluding with a road tilt versus Northern Iowa.

Memorial Stadium
Home for the Sycamores over the past
40 years is venerable Memorial Stadium. The
12,764-seat structure has stood at the corner of Wabash and Brown Avenues in Terre
Haute, Ind., since its original construction in
1924. The facility was acquired by Indiana
State University in 1967.
The stadium, through constant upkeep,
is in excellent condition through the years.
Its latest additions are a $600,000 AstroPlay
artificial surface, installed prior to the 2001
season, as well as a refurbished pressbox.
Memorial Stadium is not new to synthetic surfaces, as the stadium and Indiana State
University claim distinction as the world’s first
university to make outdoor application of
Astroturf. Following the University’s acquisition of the stadium, Indiana State opened
the 1967 season with a 41-6 win over Eastern
Illinois in the first game played on the new
surface.
Memorial Stadium was dedicated to
the public for the first time on May 5, 1925,
as the local minor league baseball team,
the Terre Haute Tots, played the Peoria Tractors before an estimated crowd of 9,000.
Among the honored guests were Major
League Baseball Commissioner Judge Kennesaw Mountain Landis and Charles Barnard
of the Cleveland Indians.
The first use of the playing field was in
the fall of 1924, when Wiley and Garfield
High Schools played their traditional Thanksgiving Day game.
Original construction of Memorial Stadium begun in 1922, at a cost of $450,000.
Upon the University gaining control in 1967,
a three-part renovation project was started
which included: the reorientation of the
playing field from a north-south direction
to its present east-west configuration; the
installation of Astroturf; and the construction
of some 4,500 bleacher seats on the north
side of the field as well as the rebuilding of
seats on the south side. The original arch
still remains from the original structure. However, the bleacher seats, installed in 1967,
were removed in the summer of 1996 and
replaced by a landscaped hill which serves
as a general admission section and a site
for pregame tailgating for Sycamore fans.
Memorial Stadium features a singlelevel press box which can accommodate
over 50 people for a Sycamore football
contest. The press box houses the ISU Stat
Crew, Presidential SkyBox, Broadcast Locations for Visiting and Home Radio as well as
Live Television, Visiting A.D. Skybox, Home
and Visiting Coaches Booths as well the
stadium’s public address and scoreboard
operation rooms.
The centerpiece of the ISU press box is
a 20-seat media work area which features
two levels of spacious accommodations for
those media covering Sycamore football.
The ISU fieldhouse is the location of the
ISU coaches’ meeting room and lockerroom, as the equipment storage, the home
and visiting lockerooms as well as the ISU
Athletic Training facility. The fieldhouse is
the location of all postgame media interview facilities.
Former Indiana State head coach
Dennis Raetz utilized Memorial Stadium
well. His Sycamore teams posted a 67-30-1
mark for a .689 winning percentage in 18
seasons at Memorial Stadium. Under the
lights, Raetz’s teams compiled a 34-4-1
mark for an .885 winning percentage.
