Fitting Tribute
At exactly 9:11 pm on Thursday evening, September 11, everyone in
Perry’s took a few moments to pay tribute to those innocent lives lost
seven years ago resulting from terrorist attacks in New York,
Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC.
As DJ Doo Wop Jack was within seconds of playing Ray Charles’
America the Beautiful, Steve Caimano entered from the side door.
Steve‘s unexpected entrance into the room at that precise time was a
reminder to us all of our military men and women who continue to
defend and protect our country’s freedom and independence. It goes
without saying that Steve was greeted with a round of applause which
possibly explains the stunned look on his face.
Fact or Fiction…Zumba is a new island formed from volcanic ash.
Fiction! Fact is that Zumba is a dynamic workout system fusing Latin
rhythms and easy to follow moves including cha cha, salsa, hip hop, etc.
As we all know, hand dancers are excellent cha cha dancers as well so
Zumba is a natural dance movement for us. And, for those of you who
know this editor personally, you know that she’s no stranger to finding
something new and challenging to embrace. Well, your editor has been
taking Zumba classes three times a week since Sept. 8th and what can
honestly be said about Zumba is that it’s a total blast and at the same time
one of THE most FUN and dynamic workouts set to music. Oh, and by the way, men can Zumba too.
For more information about class times, cost and locations, you can contact my class instructor,
Su Crutchfield at 301-855-2260 or visit Dance Fit Studios web site at www.dancefitstudios.com.
Signs That Tell You Are Too Old for Trick or Treating:
1) You get winded just from going up and down steps and knocking on all the
doors.
2) You have to have someone chew the candy for you.
3) You ask for high fiber candy only.
4) When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, you lose your balance and fall
over.
5) You have to carefully choose a costume that won’t dislodge your hair piece.
6) You’re the only Power Ranger in the neighborhood with a walker.
7) You avoid going to houses where your ex-wives/husbands live!
Just a little humor, folks! We’re never too old to have a little fun so plan on being at Perry’s on
Thursday, October 30th to help us celebrate Halloween. If you really want to get into the spirit of things,
why not wear a costume? If there are enough “costume clad” people, then Perry’s Proprietor, Kristos,
has agreed to pick a “best costume” winner and present him/her with a complimentary Perry’s gift card.
Perry’s will also be treating hand dancers with Perry’s homemade pumpkin bread as a dessert. Now if
someone could just arrange for Mario Lopez to be there that night and dance with this editor, there’ll be
some howling going on that night and I’m not talking wolves here!
Pat Hobeck’s Ship Has Dry Docked…For Good!
There’s a reason for that HUGE smile on Pat’s face! The alarm clock he has been
setting for 44 years will undoubtedly be smashed into pieces after October 1. Pat will be
saying “Goodbye” to his Longshoreman’s job and shouting “Hello and Hallelujah” as he
joins the “elite” ranks of well deserved RETIREES. What a perfect candidate for this
month’s Spotlight segment!
Mickey & Minnie Get Tipsy at Wine Tasting ~~ Would the Epcot Center in
Disneyworld come to mind when planning a wine tasting excursion? Well, leave it up
to Lee and Neil Carter to pair up with some friends and do exactly that! Now it
wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t mention that other activities were also part of their plans while
in Disneyworld but the wine tasting was all that registered and committed to memory
while eavesdropping.
Also missing from Perry’s for three weeks will be Marge Jordan who is “Cruising” with some of her
friends. Again, casual eavesdropping picked up the fact that Spain, Rome, Morocco, and Monaco were
some of the stops and “gambling” was high on the ladies priority list! Hope Marge comes back home
with some big winnings so she can buy us all a drink at Perry’s!
There was no shortage of birthday celebrations at Perry’s during the month of September.
Photos of all the birthday “guys and gals” are included inside this issue. We also
enjoyed celebrating Pat Hobeck’s SURPRISE Retirement party at Perry’s. This issue
was delayed by a few days in order to include photos from that special night on Oct. 2.
If you’re looking for a place to host a special occasion, why not check out Perry’s
banquet facilities and variety of menus online (www.perrysrestaurant.com) or contact Mr.
Perry or Kristos at 410-674-4000. The hors d’ouevres menu, selected for Pat’s Retirement Party, was
fabulous!
Perry’s regular, Bob Dublin, will be celebrating an October birthday and Jack’s weekly email will
confirm which Thursday Bob will save for his “Perry’s” celebration.
As you can see from this issue (as well as previous ones), Perry’s is a place that hand dancers have
come to enjoy as the center of celebrations that consist of holidays, birthdays, and retirements. If you’re
missing out on the fun then there’s a quick remedy…stop by and join us at Perry’s.
FYI…your editor’s ear lobes are beginning to droop from the constant head tilting while eavesdropping. I
did say ear lobes, folks, the rest ain’t drooping yet! Want to share something interesting for the next
issue? Just drop me a line at [email protected] & add the words “Perry’s Tidbits” in the subject
line. As a reminder, don’t forget to go to www.perrysrestaurant.com and browse through past issues
(including present) of the “In Step at Perry’s” newsletter.
From the King of Rock N’ Roll, Elvis Presley:
“Music should be something that makes you gotta move, inside or outside.”

Pat Hobeck was born on Nov. 18, 19__. I leave it up to
inquiring minds to ask Pat directly for the last two digits of his
birth year! Having lost his parents as an infant, Pat was raised by his
grandmother in Locust Point, MD. After graduating from Southern High
School (located in Baltimore) he moved from Locust Point to Brooklyn,
MD where he continues to reside. Interesting fact: Southern High
School, located at Warren & Battery Avenue in Baltimore has since
become a senior home. NO, Pat has no intention of “revisiting” his
former school any time too soon!
After serving in Vietnam, Pat returned home to Maryland to embark on a career as a
Longshoreman. The fact that the original company changed from Dundalk Marine Terminal to
SeaGirt Marine Terminal and finally to Ports America doesn’t affect his retirement check! Pat
has also proudly been a member of the International Longshoreman’s Association during his
entire 44 year career.
Now to the fun and personal stuff! Pat and his girlfriend, Joanie Rurka, dated in high school,
lost touch with each other, and 42 years later at a Southern High School reunion 3 years ago,
they hooked up with each other and have been together since.
If you’ve seen Pat and Joanie dancing then you would never guess that their dance style is self
taught. What is believable is that Pat’s first dance partner was an old door and a piece of rope!
Only difference with some of us, Pat, is that we didn’t have the rope so we settled for the door
handle!
It should come as no surprise to many to learn that Jimmy Pearce and Pat have been friends for
50+years. The way I hear it is that Pat and Jeanette Pearce rode the same bus to high school
and that Pat introduced Jimmy to Jeanette. Can’t quite picture Pat playing Cupid but it
obviously worked in this case!
So what does our Longshoreman intend to do with his newly gained “free” time when he’s not
dancing or spending time with Joanie? Pat is an AVID hockey fan along with baseball and
football. To say he loves sports is an understatement! Favorite teams include Caps, Orioles,
and Ravens but that doesn’t limit his love of sports of any kind!
Pat and Joanie are loyal Perry’s weekly regulars and now that Pat doesn’t have to get up real
early anymore, maybe they’ll be able to stick around a little longer. For you Pat:
“Now that you’ve given to the world, it’s time to give to YOU.”
