Square Rigger - Sail Powered Energy
Square Rigger Product Introduction and Specification Datasheet Version 8 – 24th June 2013 Square Rigger Version: 24 June 2013 Introduction The Square Rigger is an innovative design of small vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) that combines cutting edge electronic control, with well understood and proven sailing technology Three rectangular sails, spaced at 120 degree intervals, rotate around a central vertical mast. Each sail also rotates at half speed about its own axis. Envisage the turbine from a birds‐eye view, rotating clockwise, as though upon a clock face. With the wind blowing from the 6 o’clock position, a downwind moving sail at 9 o’clock is fully perpendicular to the flow. An upwind moving sail at 3 o’clock is parallel, offering the minimal cross‐
section to the oncoming breeze. Energy is captured for approximately 270 degrees of cycle; downwind drag and upwind lift before and after the 3 o’clock position. This is analogous to the sailing capabilities of a yacht around a similar range of wind interface angles. The Square Rigger maximises the range of wind speeds in which it can generate power by varying the size of the sails; in low wind speeds the sails are fully unfurled, but as wind speed increases so the width of each sail is reduced. This, coupled with intelligent dynamic digital load control, optimises the energy produced by the turbine. ©Tradewind Turbines Ltd. 2013 Page 2 of 7 Square Rigger Version: 24 June 2013 Facts and Figures The Square Rigger can be configured to generate electrical power or pump fluids such as water or slurries. When configured for electrical power, there are numerous on or off‐grid storage and distribution options, please consult with Tradewind to determine the best solution for your specific requirements. The situation is similar when the unit is configured for fluid pumping. Site layout, fluid consistency, input and output locations, and pipework infrastructure requirements, all need to be correctly planned and calculated.
