Dear Friends,
We are very proud to present you with the 2015 TalkTools catalog. We have had a very productive year
that resulted in new resources, continuation of research and an expanded training schedule, which
are all designed to increase skills in both feeding and in speech clarity. All of our programs follow the
principals of Evidence Based Practice (EBP) as described by the American Speech, Language, Hearing
Association (ASHA) as well as The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
Our new resources this year include Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson’s comprehensive book A Therapist
Guide to Rehabilitative Feeding and Speech Techniques for Teens and Adults. This book is the
compilation of many years of work by Sara with the adult population and includes over 400 pages
of new techniques, and case-studies that will allow you to implement the therapy immediately.
In addition to this book Sara has a complementary course “Oral Phase Feeding and Speech for
Teens and Adults” and has developed a new “TalkTools Adult Feeding Cup” as well as a new strawdrinking protocol for this population. We are very excited to bring this therapy that was initially
developed for the pediatric population into treatment of older children and adults with musclebased feeding and/or speech disorders.
In addition to the Adult Program development we have been busy creating new and updated DVD/
Video on Demand courses that include Lori Overland’s new “Developing Oral Sensory Motor Skills
to Support Feeding in the Down Syndrome Population; Renee’s new course “A Sensory Motor
Approach to Apraxia of Speech and related Motor Speech Disorders”; and Robyn’s new course
“Oral Placement TO Speech- Transitioning Muscle Memory to Speech Sound Production.”
Our course schedule has increased this past year and has included over 26 states and 18 countries.
Therapist and parent feedback from these classes has taught us how to better serve you by
expanding into new focus areas related to muscle-based feeding and speech disorders. A special
congratulation to the 10 therapists that completed our advanced training courses this year.
Finally, thank you for your support of our work here at TalkTools. We look forward to continuing to
provide you with training, techniques and tools to achieve success with your clients/children.
THANK YOU,
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson, MS, CCC-SLP

SARA ROSENFELD-JOHNSON, M.S., CCC-SLP
ROBYN MERKEL-WALSH
M.A., CCC-SLP
This course helps therapists transition Oral
Placement skills into speech sounds production, by
transitioning muscle movements into word drills.
Robyn outlines early developing phonemes
m,b,p,w,h,k,g,t,d and n, and the pre-requisite skills
needed for each sound via Oral Placement Therapy
examples. Next, Robyn helps clinicians transition
those cues into words through the OPT-S Kit.
This short course helps therapists implement a
comprehensive tactile approach to therapy by taking Sara RosenfeldJohnson’s “Three Part Treatment Plan” Approach into a more
traditional articulation therapy plan once a client can respond to “look
at me and say what I say.” . Robyn also discusses evidenced based
practice and how Oral Placement Therapy is an extension of Van
Riper’s Phonetic Treatment Approach. A therapy session demonstration
is provided for viewers to model.
This course helps therapists transition Oral Placement
skills into speech sounds production, by transitioning
muscle movements into word drills. Robyn outlines early
developing phonemes and the pre-requisite skills needed
for each sound via Oral Placement Therapy. A therapy
session demonstration is provided for viewers to model.
This course helps clinicians transition those cues into words
and implement a comprehensive tactile approach to therapy
through the use of the OPT-S Kit.
Learning Outcomes:
1. Therapists will learn to define the term “Oral Placement Therapy”.
2. Therapists will understand how oral placement skills can be
transitioned into speech sounds.
3. Therapist will be able to list three Oral Placement Therapy tools.
4. Therapists will learn the concept of warm up and target
therapy words.
Transitioning Muscle Memory into
Speech Sound Production
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson has created a program and book using tactile
interventions to improve a) oral preparatory phase feeding skills and b) speech
clarity in teens, young adults and the geriatric population. Activities address
improving chewing, bolus formation and positioning for transport, and speech
clarity. These techniques are valuable when addressing many diagnoses:
dysarthria, apraxia, Parkinson’s disease, Down syndrome, TBI and Cerebral Palsy
as well as voice disorders, post oral cancer surgery, and post CVA. Included in
this book are step-by-step instructions for the “why” and “how”, Initial Program
Plans and case studies.

Yo he utilizado el
me refiero a él, a menudo.
- Adrienne Lee, M.S., CCC-THL
A mí,
- Mary Ann deSante M.A., CCC-PHL

Renee Roy Hill discusses how treatment may differ for clients diagnosed
with motor speech disorders who also present with coexisting diagnoses,
including apraxia of speech. Many of these clients do not respond to the
traditional auditory and visually-based motor speech techniques due to oral
sensory deficits, feeding deficits, or oral motor dis-coordination. Renee’s
complete motor speech program includes; where to start with a child who
is non-vocal using a tactile kinesthetic, motor-based approach, and how to
transition smoothly from OPT to Speech. These techniques will be taught in
conjunction with auditory and visually- based motor speech techniques to
improve speech clarity.

Upon course completion, each participant will be able to:
• Apply the hierarchy of jaw, lip and tongue dissociation in a
therapeutic context.
• Explain the direct link between working on non-speech activities
and speech sound production while learning that tactile
information may be the key to working with children with apraxia.
• Explain how many clients with apraxia also present with oralsensory and feeding deficits and dysarthria
• Use at least three new speech therapy techniques with their
existing clients.
A Sensory Motor Approachto Apraxia of Speech and
Related Motor Speech Disorders
In this presentation, Renee Roy Hill, discusses
treatment of clients diagnosed with apraxia
of speech who also present with a coexisting
diagnosis. Many of these clients do not respond
to the traditional auditory and visually-based motor
speech techniques initially because their other
issues, including oral sensory deficits, feeding
deficits, and oral weakness, are not addressed.
Renee demonstrates how oral placement activities, which utilize
a tactile approach in conjunction with auditory and visually-based
apraxia therapy, will improve speech clarity for clients with diagnosis
of apraxia.

transitioning clients with motor-planning deficits from Oral
Placement activities to speech production. The three sets

Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson,
As a Parent:
“I decided to make this video to help you, the parent,
learn what you can do at home to improve your child’s
speech clarity and feeding safety. Over the years, I
have found that parents can become great assets to
their child’s speech language pathologist, once they
understand why they are being asked to perform
certain homework assignments with their child. The
exercises shown in this video are presented in a
hierarchy of very small steps which will ensure that
your child will not only make progress but will have fun doing so. This
video is designed to not only show you what you can do to help your
child, but also explains to you why you are being asked to use specific
straws, horns or bite-tubes. In addition, watching this video will give
you the knowledge you need to become a better advocate for your child,
whether they receive speech therapy through the public school, early
intervention program, clinic, hospital or private practice. Knowledge is a
very powerful tool.”
What Can I Do to Improve My Child’s Feeding
Skills and Speech Clarity?
You are invited to join the conversation on our
BLOG at blog.talktools.com, where you can

techniques as well as read about success stories.

THE HOMEWORK BOOK
For therapists implementing the techniques found in Oral Placement Therapy for
Speech Clarity and Feeding, The HOMEWORK Book puts each activity on easyto-follow homework sheets which can be removed and photocopied, then sent
home with the client or child for daily practice between therapy sessions.
The new “OPT Assessment and Treatment Checklist” will lead
you through an Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) Evaluation and
help you to formulate your Program Plan. In each segment:
Sensory, Pre-feeding, Feeding, Oral Placement Therapy and
Speech, you will learn and use the a) therapy techniques,
b) steps and c) Criteria for Success to master skills needed
for standard speech development and feeding safety. Use
the “Musclebased Articulation Assessment Form” with any
standardized Articulation Test to identify the muscle skills
needed to improve your client’s speech clarity as related to
jaw height, lip placement and tongue placement. As your
client makes progress with the use of OPT you will see a
correlation between skills mastered in OPT and acquisition
of standard speech sounds on the word and conversational
levels. Instruction sheets included.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR IEPS AND
INSURANCE REIMBURSEMENT- CD
By Robyn Merkel-Walsh M.A., CCC-SLP and
Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson M.S., CCC-SLP
Therapists are often unsure of how to set goals that are
educationally relevant or how to produce goals that help
with insurance reimbursement. Robyn Merkel-Walsh has
worked in a public school and a private clinic since 1995.
She has spent a great deal of time writing and re-writing
goals and objectives that are client-centered, yet provide
the relationship between oral placement skills and speech
production. Together with Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson’s
expertise on oral placement therapy, Oral Placement
Therapy (OPT) Goals and Objectives for IEPs and Insurance
Reimbursement was created to help therapists write IEP
goals and accurately measure progress in OPT activities
used to improve speech clarity and feeding skill levels. Use
this CD to tailor activities to your client’s specific needs.

A SENSORY MOTOR APPROACH TO APRAXIA OF SPEECH AND RELATED MOTOR
SPEECH DISORDERS (0.6 ASHA/AOTA CREDITS)
In this presentation, Renee Roy Hill discusses how treatment may differ for clients diagnosed with a motor speech disorder,
to include clients with the diagnosis of apraxia of speech who also present with a coexisting diagnosis. Many of these
clients do not respond to the traditional auditory and visually-based motor speech techniques because other issues including
oral sensory deficits, feeding deficits, and oral motor dis-coordination are not addressed. Renee will teach her complete
motor speech program that begins with where to start with a child who is non-vocal using a tactile kinesthetic, motor-based
approach, and how to transition smoothly from OPT to Speech. These techniques will be taught in conjunction with auditory
and visually- based motor speech techniques to improve speech clarity for this population. Includes DVDs, workbook, and

Robyn’s SMILE Program (SysteMatic Intervention for Lingual Elevation) is an effective way to help children remediate
articulation errors including persistent lisps, interdentalized productions of t-d-l-n, and distortions of sh-ch-r. Robyn
discovered that by combining oral placement, swallowing, and articulation therapies, progress rates improved. This
course deals with children age seven and above who have the cognitive ability to follow directions and to monitor their
own swallow patterns. Includes one DVD, SMILE Manual, one workbook, and one CEU packet.

NEW DVD: ORAL PLACEMENT TO SPEECH: TRANSITIONING MUSCLE MEMORY INTO
SPEECH SOUND PRODUCTION (0.3 ASHA/AOTA CREDITS)
This course helps therapists transition Oral Placement skills into speech sounds production, by transitioning muscle
movements into word drills. Robyn outlines early developing phonemes m,b,p,w,h,k,g,t,d and n, and the pre-requisite
skills needed for each sound via Oral Placement Therapy examples. Next, Robyn helps clinicians transition those cues into
words through the OPT-S Kit. This short course helps therapists implement a comprehensive tactile approach to therapy
by taking Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson’s “Three Part Treatment Plan” Approach into a more traditional articulation therapy plan
once a client can respond to “look at me and say what I say.” Robyn also discusses evidenced based practice and how
Oral Placement Therapy is an extension of Van Riper’s Phonetic Treatment Approach. A therapy session demonstration is
provided for viewers to model. Includes DVDs, workbook, and CEU packets.
