Feeding Therapy: A Sensory-Motor
Approach (1 or 2 days)
The 4 following workshops
constitute “the core.” They are the
most popular among therapists
and are required to complete
TalkTools® Level Training Program.
A Three-Part Treatment Plan for Oral
Placement Therapy (1 or 2 days)
TalkTools®' innovative tactile-sensory
approach to speech therapy uses
therapy tools to train and transition
muscle movements for speech
production. Learn how 40 highly
motivating motor activities can be used
to improve phonation, resonation, and
speech clarity. Interactive, hands-on
demonstrations will focus on
therapeutically sound techniques to
develop oral-motor movements for
improved speech clarity. Muscles of the
abdomen, velum, jaw, lips, and tongue
will be discussed within the parameters
of movements necessary for speech
production. Developmentally
appropriate motor movements for
speech are therapeutically targeted using
highly motivating techniques appropriate
for children and adults.
In Lori Overland's updated
Sensory/Motor Approach to Feeding
workshop the complex issues
surrounding feeding disorders are
discussed. The class reflects new
research and understanding of sensory
processing and the impact on feeding.
Pre-feeding exercises designed to
develop the motor skills for safe,
effective, nutritive feeding and
therapeutic feeding techniques are
targeted. The class includes two live
evaluations and program plans, as well
as interactive sensory and feeding
practicums. Day 1 focuses on
promoting acceptance of touch for
therapeutic feeding and oral
stimulation and movement. Her
techniques incorporate a variety of
temperatures, textures and tastes. Day
2 features hands-on learning of
techniques for spoon feeding, straw
drinking and chewing solid foods.
Leave this workshop with therapeutic
feeding techniques you can use with
confidence the next day.
A Sensory Motor Approach to
Apraxia of Speech and Related
Motor Speech Disorders (1 or 2 days)
In this presentation, Renee Roy Hill will
discuss treatment of clients diagnosed
with apraxia of speech and related
motor speech disorders. Many of these
clients do not respond to the traditional
auditory and visually-based motor
speech techniques often because other
co-existing issues, including oral
sensory deficits, feeding deficits, and
oral placement deficits, are not
addressed making differential diagnosis
an important assessment component.
Renee demonstrates how OPT
activities, which utilize a tactile
approach, in conjunction with auditory
and visually-based apraxia therapy
techniques will improve speech clarity
for clients with the diagnosis of apraxia.
7
Oral Placement Therapy: Assessment
& Program Plan Development
(2 days)
Learn how to perform a comprehensive
evaluation for clients with sensory,
feeding and/or speech disorders
following the principles of Sara
Rosenfeld-Johnson’s hierarchical
approach to oral-motor assessment
and treatment using the techniques
learned in “A Three Part Treatment Plan
to Oral Placement Therapy.“ This class
will lead you, step-by-step, through the
assessment process used with clients of
varying ages and skill levels who
evidence oral placement deficits.
Participants will observe via videos, two
complete assessment sessions and
follow up treatment with clients from
infancy to adult, and will learn how to
identify oral-motor deficits that effect
speech production. Development of
therapeutic program plans designed
specifically to meet each client’s oral
placement needs will be addressed. A
live evaluation will be performed on the
second day allowing participants to
observe client skills, record
observations on an assessment form
and develop a therapeutic plan from
these results. We are sure you will leave
this session with advanced skills in
assessment and program plan
development for each client with oral
placement needs.

Partnering Effectively with Parents:
Maximize the Potential of Children
Receiving Therapy (1 day)
Losing sleep over clients who aren’t
making the progress you know they are
capable of? Want parents to better
understand the tremendous impact
therapy offers? Feel bad giving parent’s
homework when you know they are
already overwhelmed and struggling?
In this course, Whitney Pimentel, SLP
and Dr. Julia Kinder (mom and
physician) bring 15 years of experience
in maximizing the potential of
thousands of children with
developmental disabilities to provide
solutions to therapists most common
dilemmas. You have devoted your life to
helping clients, pouring your heart into
every therapy session. You are
determined that each client reach their
full potential. In this course, find that
missing puzzle piece which explains
why clients fall short of goals and create
a plan which will easily propel clients
towards quicker success.
Pediatric Dysphagia: Interpreting the
MBSS and Planning Treatment (1 day)
This course teaches participants how to
assess pediatric patients with a physical
examination and the MBSS. Participants
watch more than 20 studies of normal
and disordered pediatric patients to
identify swallowing impairments and
plan treatment. There is an extensive
review of the most prevalent pediatric
disorders and how to effectively plan
treatment. The course includes an indepth discussion of craniofacial
anomalies, including nasal and
laryngeal obstructions, and disorders
that contribute to dysphagia.
Solving the Puzzle of Autism: Using
Tactile Therapy Techniques (1 day)
Autism is a developmental disability that
affects, often severely, a person’s ability
to communicate and socially interact
with others. According to recent
statistics from Cure Autism Now, autism
is believed to affect 1 in every 50 people
and the rate is on the rise. The intensity
of symptoms varies widely; however, all
people on the spectrum display
impairments in communication, social
relationships and patterned behaviors.
Due to high incidence of
communication issues with the ASD
population, Speech Pathologists are
almost always part of a team of
professionals who treat these
individuals. This course will look at the
current methodologies and treatment
techniques when working with children
who present with Autism. Various
methodologies will be outlined and
discussed including Applied Behavioral
Analysis, Verbal Behavior, DIR methods,
Oral Placement Therapy and Biomedical
Theories. Combining approaches allow
therapists to assess children with ASD
and implement a comprehensive tactile
approach to therapy. Issues such as
problematic behavior, food refusal and
tactile sensitivities will be discussed.
Adult Dysphagia: Interpreting the
MBSS and Planning Treatment (1 day)
This course teaches participants how to
integrate the bedside evaluation, cranial
nerve assessment and modified barium
swallow study (MBSS) to diagnose and
plan treatment for adult dysphagia
patients. Participants watch over 30
MBSS, identify disorders, implement
positional strategies and plan treatment.
There are hands-on opportunities
throughout the entire course, including
performing a Cranial Nerve
Assessment. Participants will leave this
course more competent and energized
to treat Dysphagia patients.

Developing Oral Sensory Motor Skills
to Support Feeding in the Down
Syndrome Population (1 day)
This one day seminar focuses on the
development of oral-motor and feeding
skills in the Down syndrome population
from birth to adulthood. Factors which
potentially impact feeding will be
presented. This will be followed by an
overview of therapeutic intervention
strategies to prevent long term feeding
problems. Assessment of sensory and
motor skills will be discussed prior to
the lunch break. The afternoon
program provides a framework for
developing sensory diets and facilitating
improved oral-motor and feeding skills
through therapeutic feeding techniques.
Oral Placement Therapy:
Clinical Implications for Tongue
Thrust & Lisps (1 day)
Robyn’s SMILE Program (SysteMatic
Intervention for Lingual Elevation) is and
effective way to help children remediate
articulation errors including persistent
lisps, interdentalized productions of t-dl-n, and distortions of sh-ch-r. The
program targets the root of the speech
problem which is often a tongue thrust
disorder. Robyn discovered in a schoolbased setting that by combining oral
placement, swallowing and articulation
therapies progress rates improved. This
one-day seminar addresses children
ages 3 and up, who present with
persistent articulation errors secondary
to a Tongue Thrust Disorder.

Rehabilitative Feeding and Speech
Techniques for Teens and Adults (1 day)
A Systematic Approach to Teaching
Speech to Non-Vocal Individuals
with Autism (2 days)
Developing functional speech in nonverbal clients with Autism can be one of
the biggest challenges for Speech
Pathologists as well as Behavior
Analysts when those clients do not
respond to traditional verbal modeling
approaches. Working with those clients
who present with challenging behaviors
can be difficult as well. This course
presents a systematic approach to
developing functional speech with
individuals who are non-verbal or nonimitative. The course is a
comprehensive program that combines
principles of Applied Behavior Analysis
with Oral Placement Therapy. For
Behavior Analysts, the course
demonstrates the importance of using
specific techniques within hierarchies to
develop the oral placement skills for
speech and feeding. For Speech and
Language Pathologists, this course
demonstrates techniques developed
within the Applied Behavior Analysis
field to maximize learning for functional
speech using reinforcement based
procedures. The course guides all
participants through a complete
program beginning with developing
cooperation and ending with functional
vocabulary. Videos are shown
throughout the presentation to
demonstrate each technique. This
course benefits Speech and Language
Pathologists, Behavior Analysts,
Teachers, Parents and others working
with non-verbal individuals with autism.
After many years of clinical research and
development Sara Rosenfeld-Johnson
has created a program using tactile
interventions to improve the oral
preparatory phase feeding skills and
speech clarity for teens, young adults
and the geriatric population. In this one
day class participants will learn how to
diagnose and treat muscle-based
deficits for their clients with any of the
following diagnoses: dysarthria, apraxia,
post oral cancer surgery, voice
disorders, post CVA, Parkinson’s
disease, as well as Down syndrome, TBI
and Cerebral Palsy. The hands-on
practicum will include innovative
“therapy tools” that can be used by
therapists, patients or caregivers to
improve feeding skill including chewing
of firmer textures, bolus formation and
bolus positioning for transport. Muscle
skills can improve at any age and this
class will add both new and exciting
activities to your therapy repertoire.
Come, learn, have fun and enjoy the
successes! Before and after videos will
demonstrate the effectiveness of Oral
Placement Therapy.
Sensory Intervention Techniques for
Speech-Language Pathologists (1 day)
Sensory differences affect every facet in
an individual’s life from eating,
articulation, language, social and
academic skills to self-care skills and
play. This course will allow attendees to
evaluate their own sensory differences,
which will give insight and perspective
toward their clients. The Instructor will
demonstrate the importance of
modulation, under responsive or over
responsive actions in order to guide and
create successful therapy sessions.
Attendees will be taught to recognize
how a client may be processing
information, and to understand which
strategies and Evidence Based Practices
to use to help the individual both in
therapy and other environments. The
importance of working with an
Occupational Therapist in treatment or
consultation will be addressed.
Oral Placement to Speech:
Transitioning Muscle Memory into
Speech Sound Production (1 day)
This course teaches that Oral Placement
Therapy is an extension of Van Riper’s
“Phonetic Placement Approach.” Many
school–aged children cannot respond
to traditional articulation therapy
methods which rely on auditory and
placement cues without tactile
intervention. If a child cannot imitate a
speech sound, even in isolation, it may
seem impossible to facilitate progress.
With using modern day Phonetic
Placement Techniques, therapists can
use therapy tools and the sensory
feedback model to effectively improve
articulation. Specific considerations for
the school-based population were
discussed in regard to the Core
Curriculum Content Standards, and
Individualized Education Plans.
Therapists will learn how to identify Oral
Placement Disorders, and then use Oral
Placement Therapy to shape speech
sounds, then cue fade, and shape those
placement skills into speech sound
production. Current research and
evidenced based practice will be
discussed through an engaging hands
on practicum. Video examples and
session materials will be utilized to show
sample therapy sessions.
