Elfenridge Dressage SVDA sanctioned show at Happy Valley
September 23rd, 2007 A huge success!
Jamee Albright, Alexis Albright, Kya Endreson, Emma Burdett – Elfendrillettes beach quadrille
demonstration, Elfenridge Dressage SVDA sanctioned show at Happy Valley, Sept 23rd –
coached by Tristin Hardy and Jennifer Hippensteel
Beautiful weather, helpful volunteers, and a large turnout all helped make the day fun and enjoyable for all. A special thank you to judge
Janice Mumford for her positive and useful comments and also rolling with the little things that come up, such as numbers getting
switched, a horse who knocked down the chain (did all 4 feet actually go out?), and a sense of humor with our afternoon runner who was
given tasks such as bowing, curtseying, doing a pirouette each time she picked up tests! Certainly never a dull moment. Lots of smiles,
especially with the Hawaiian theme quadrille performed at the lunch break.
Thank you everyone who helped make the show a success, volunteers and participants alike. Tristin Hardy
Pam Burdett riding Colletto
Judge Janice Mumford and scribe Karen Barnard were
entertained by runner Emma Burdett in the afternoon of
the Elfenridge show

Members Present: Bettina Longaker (CH), Anne Draine (NE/CC), Alison Douglas (CC), Jessie Ginsburg (Nova), Sheli King (Nova),
Dianne Boyd (Nova), Susan Dallas (SW), Beth Rippel (SE), Jane Palmer (Shen).
The meeting was brought to order at 11:25 at the Panera Bread restaurant in Charlottesville on Sept. 8, 2007. Beth Rippel read the
minutes from the July 8th meeting.
President Tina Longaker announced that the date of the Adult Team Championship to be held at Culpeper has been changed to Aug. 2-3,
2008.
Treasurer Jessie Ginsburg reported a total of $61,430.73 in the VADA accounts. Jessie moved and the Board agreed to changing the
charge for a returned check to $25.00 plus the expense of bank charges.
Chapter updates:
The Nova Adult Camp held at the Madeira School in McLean was deemed extremely successful. Nova’s schooling shows continue to
be over subscribed. Another will be held on Sept. 15. There will be a CDCTA team challenge on Oct. 13. The Nova schooling show
championships will be held in November. There will be $5,000 available for awards to participants in the Freestyle championships
scheduled for Sept. 21.
Central chapter had a freestyle clinic with Anne Caldron for their junior riders. There will be a clinic with Carter Bass on Oct. 7 and a
schooling show on Oct. 14t at Sankt Georg Farm with judge Margret Gafford.
NEVADA held a successful schooling show on Aug. 19. NE is using VADA education grant funds for a clinic with Nancy Lowey on
Sept. 9. There will be two schooling shows in October.
SWVADA’s August schooling show was judged by Helen George. Their annual dressage camp with clinicians Liz Steacie and Debbie
Bowman was held Sept. 7-9 at Fancy Hill Farm. SW’s Oct. 6 schooling show will be the last show of the year.
SVDA will finish up the year with three schooling shows, Sept. 9 at Happy Valley Farm, Oct. 14 at Princess Anne Farms, and Nov. 11 at
Maturia Farm. The last will be the schooling show championships. On Oct. 6 there will be a clinic with Jeanie McDonald.
The Charlottesville chapter’s clinic with Lars Petersen and Jim Koford, held at Cedar Creek Stables, was very well attended and
successful. Final preparation is under way for the Twin shows at Rose Mount Farm to be held Sept. 16-17. A total of 120 rides are
scheduled for Sat. and 130 rides on Sunday.
2007 GAIG Championships: Dianne Boyd, show manager, updated preparations for the GAIGS. Holly Veloso is the volunteer
coordinator and Sue Rowdon is obtaining sponsors. Sharon Ackely is again handling the awards, trophys, and ribbons. The chapters have
been asked to contribute $45.00 to sponsor breakfast in the barns. VADA will provide the wine for a wine and cheese party in the
Mezzanine room and the ever popular dog costume show will be part of Saturday night’s entertainment.
Other business:
Alison Douglas will chair the 2008 annual banquet to be held at the Doubletree Hotel in Charlottesville on Jan. 27, 2008. There will
again be a silent auction. Each chapter needs to designate a person from their chapter to be in charge of getting items for the auction.
Beth Rippel reported a total of 1,057 members in VADA as of Sept. 1, 2007.
Chapters are asked to notify Robin Dannels of their new officers for 2008 once elections have been held and to provide a membership list

VADA’s next board meeting will be held on Dec. 16, 2007 at the DoubleTree in Charlottesville. Respectfully submitted by Jane Palmer

Double Tree in Charlottesville, Va. The Virginia Horse Center is now owned and operated by the Virginia Horse Center Corporation not the
State. The April recognized show had a $400.00 profit which includes the cost of the ribbons and prizes for the August recognized show.
Next year’s recognized show is April 28, 2008 and the forms have to be submitted by June 28, 2007. SVDA currently has $17,000 in the
bank. There was some discussion on changing the eligibility criteria for scholarships.
Vice President, Robyn Nunnally still needs volunteers for the upcoming shows.
Schooling show chair, Dawn Sherrill stated the September show will be held at Wellington and we need to set up the ring.
No unfinished business.
The next meeting of the SVDA Board will held at the Haiku Sushi Restaurant in Chesapeake on September 5 at 7 pm. The meeting was
adjourned by Beth.
Respectfully submitted by Janice Mumford, Secretary

The Story behind the Dressage
Letters – 2 possible explanations
Letters were not used until international competitions
began with the Olympics in the 1900's. The first
competition in 1912 did not have letters.
No Olympics were held in 1916 because of World War I.
The letters just "appeared' in 1920 Olympics and no one
has ever been able to find the origin although various
theories have been advanced over the years, including
one theory that the letters were the first letter of the
names of cities conquered by the Romans.
A second possibility:
"It appears that in the Old Imperial German Court the
walls of the Royal Mews/Stable yard were initially
marked with letters indicating where each Courtier
and/or riders horse was to be stood to await its rider.
K = Kaiser/King
F = Furst/Prince
P = Pferdknecht/Ostler
V = Vassal
E = Edeling/Ehrengast/Guest of Honour
B = Bannertrager/Standard Bearer
S = Schzkanzler/Chancellor of Exchequer
R = Ritter/Knight
M = Meier/Steward
H = Hofsmarshall/Lord Chancellor"
Congratulations to Sandy Johnson
on completing the “L” program with
distinction. From your friends and family.
However, in the 1920 Olympics, the letters on the
centerline were also used: A, D, L, X,
I, G, and C.
For those of us that are not familiar with the Judging Program it is
Important to note that a student in the ‘L’ program can not progress
To the next level without gradating with distinction.
Congratulations Elfenridge Dressage Musical Freestyles!!!
