We are already in the second half of the year – time really flies when you are having fun. The National Day celebrations at Petrie was once again a great success. To all the helpers who lent a hand to achieve it, many thanks! We were entertained by the Swiss Jodel choir, the German children’s dance group and the Danish dancers; they made it a truly multicultural event with a distinctive Swiss touch. We heard speeches from Switzerland (on tape) and Markus Meli, Swiss Consul General from Sydney (in person) and Daniel Gschwind, Honorary Consul for Qld. The bonfire and lantern procession rounded up a typical Swiss National Day. The last film night on 26 August was not so successful, as we couldn’t find the projector on the night (nobody had seen it after the 1 August celebration in Petrie). We had to show the movie on a TV set in the small room, not the most convenient way. The film though was funny and we will gladly show it again next year if you wish. Fortunately the projector and DVD player have been located in the meantime. Our AGM will be held on 13 October. I will stand for president again for 2013 but hope someone will volunteer to replace me the year after. On 27 October we will have our dinner dance at the Danish Club. I hope to see many members attend this fun evening. Next year Queensland will host the Australian Jass Championship 2013. We are now looking for sponsors for this event. Please contact me or Rita von Rotz if you can help. DISCLAIMER Letters published in this magazine do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the committees. We “jass” every second Thursday. We now have a beginner’s and a French card table if there are enough people. Please join us, it’s always fun! The choir is practicing on the same night. They are always looking for new members. Both events happen at the Danish Club, 36 Austin Street, Newstead, why not come along and check it out. Finally, Spring is here. Enjoy! Spring is definitely here with blue skies and the temperature is slowly climbing. It has been pretty quiet for the SCCS Committee and that is a good sign that all is well with most of our members. The Swiss Club has their AGM on 13 October and a Dinner Dance on the 27 October and the Swiss Community Care Society is having their AGM and Christmas Lunch on the 1 December. We will again have the pleasure of experiencing Jacob Berner’s excellent cuisine and of course those divine desserts. Please make sure you reserve the 1 December in your diary, we love to see you all. We will start with the AGM at 11am. You can read more details in the next Swiss News and all members will also get our Newsletter. Why not come and join us next year and perhaps meet some old friends and get to know some new ones? We enjoyed the 1 August and the Metzgete, now just a couple more performances and then we are done for the year. That does not mean we won’t be busy. Paperwork needs to be done to be ready for our AGM, which we will hold after the SSQ on Saturday, 13 October 2012 along with the Swiss Club AGM. Now is also the time where we can rehearse new songs and work on new ideas for our music pieces. This means that this would be the perfect time to join us, learn the songs for next year and be ready to perform with us from around March 2013. We are always looking for new members and meet at the Danish Club every second Thursday, same days as the Jassers, at 7.30pm. Exceptions are Swiss Film nights at the Club. Elsy Schuetz, our long serving secretary and loyal member, who for health reasons had to leave the choir, will be 80 years old on Saturday 15 September. We hope you join us in wishing her a happy birthday and good health. Kind regards, Katja Wallimann Gates President The Choir performed again at the 1 August Celebration at Petrie. Swiss News Qld – 7 Come for a Bushwalk with us! The Cougals Mount Mee State Forest Sunday, 14 October 2012 Sunday, 11 November 2012 The twin summit of the Cougals lies on the eastern escarpment of the Springbrook plateau in the Gold Coast hinterland and will make an enjoyable “Wanderung” for this Sunday’s outing, see picture above… or is it? The first to tell us the correct location of this picture will be elevated to master spotter! The walk itself, through grassy plateaus and rainforests, presents medium difficulty. We estimate the whole trip, including lunch, taking less than six hours. We will be ascending the mountains from the Tomewin Border gate. Mount Mee is about 60km north-west of Brisbane. From Brisbane, travel through Samford and Dayboro then follow Mount Mee and Sellin roads to the forest. Our track for the day would be the Somerset trail, including Mt Byron. Beginning opposite the Gantry, this track passes through scribbly gum forests, rainforest and dry open forest. About halfway along, we can enjoy the views to the west, overlooking Somerset dam. Our side trip to Mt Byron will take us to a quaint lunch spot on top of the cliffs over ‘Dianas-Bath’ and the western hills towards Esk, see picture above… or is it? The first to tell us the correct location of this picture will be nominated grand master spotter! This should be a pleasant outing and enjoyable walk for all intermediate level hikers. To get there take the Pacific Highway to Currumbin Waters. Use the Currumbin valley exit No. 95-Stewart Road towards Currumbin/Tugun) then turn left onto Currumbin Creek Rd/State Route 98. Follow this for ~ 2 Km to the next light, where you turn left into Bienvenue Drive and meet us at the ‘Currumbin Fair’ Shopping Centre Car park, some 150m up this road. Grading: M - 4 - 2 Date: Sunday, 11 November 2012 Grading: M - 4 - 2 Time: 9.30am Date: Sunday, 14 October 2012 Meet: Time: 9am Meet: Shopping Centre Currumbin Waters Mt Mee Forest Park, at the Gantry, 150m from the southern entrance to the park on a sealed road (allow at least 1 hr to get there from Brisbane CBD). Please contact the leaders or any committee member if you need help with car-pooling. Rivella Rivella Rivella Rivella! Have you been unlucky securing a Rivella at our National Day celebrations in Petrie? There is another chance for you! If there is enough interest we will place another order for pick up on Thursday Jass evenings. Orders will have to be placed by the end of September for delivery by early December. Please contact Ruth Milwright on 3205 42172 or 0414 705 255 or email [email protected] Jets sign Swiss defender Gary van Egmond has moved to strengthen the Newcastle Jets defence, signing Swiss defender Dominik Ritter to a one-year contract. Ritter has been playing for FC Winterthur since 2009/10. Prior to this, the 23-year-old came through the system at FC Basel, where he played in their Under 21s team and then also for the first team squad. “Dominik can play as fullback, which is his preferred position, or a left side stopper,” coach Gary van Egmond explains. “He has a lot of pace, he will suit our style of play and we will have good competition for spots in the backs. “He is at a good age to be coming here, he has his best years ahead of him and we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle and having him at the Jets.” "I am looking forward to arriving in Newcastle and settling in at the Jets,” Ritter said. "It will be a great challenge to come and play for the Newcastle Jets in the A-League and I can't wait." With Ritter’s signing, the Jets are getting closer to completing their squad for season 2012/13. “Any positions we sign from here will be in the front-third,” van Egmond added. There was no reply or anyone guessing the correct location of the picture (above) on the August bushwalk write-up in the last Swiss News. The picture showed the “Totensee” on top of the Grimsel pass, looking towards the Furka. It didn’t have anything to do with Mermaid Mountain or Lake Manchester!
