The beginning of an amazing boat being built for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Gregg Whelen and Gary Winters are the brains behind the project. They asked for donations of wooden items and have received things from hundreds of families. Each item has a personal story behind it, and the project has become a bit of a tourist attraction. The pair have spent more than a year working with four boat builders making the two tonne vessel watertight and seaworthy. The donated items were added to a cedar frame, and each was cut to fit next to another, according to boat builder Jesse Loynes. “It is essentially like building an enormous jigsaw puzzle without a picture on the box to go by. It’s been a real challenge, but we’re thrilled with the results.” The boat will be named by a member of the public as part of a competition. It will then be sailed to London in time for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Facing Facebook — A 51 year old woman from Winetka, Illinois, has spent the last year travelling the world in order to meet as many of her Facebook friends as possible. Arlynn Presser set off on New Year’s Eve 2010 and has made it to Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, India, Dubai, Italy, Germany, England and Ireland, to name a few. The remarkable part is that Presser suffers from debilitating agoraphobia, which is an intense fear of being in situations from which there is no easy escape. “I had real problems leaving the house, and leaving my community,” Presser said. “At the beginning of the year, I was terrified of flying and could not get on a plane.” Not all of her 325 Facebook friends thought it was a good idea however, with several refusing to meet up with her. Presser was not deterred, and made sure to take a video camera (and chaperone) along for the meetings. Two of her “friends” turned out to pets, and another is a documentary filmmaker who is turning the year long journey into a movie. Recycled Orchestra – A group of artists in Paraguay is spreading the joy of music in their own unique way. Many of the musicians come from an impoverished background, and could not afford proper instruments, so they decided to start building their own. Known as the “Orchestra of Recycled Instruments” they are all part of a unique school which teaches poor and underprivileged children music. They have used old spatulas, cookie cutters, boxes and steel containers to create their own woodwind, stringed and percussion instruments. The members of the Orchestra have helped teach more than 12,000 people how to play music, and they have built hundreds of instruments. The Orchestra sounds pretty good too - and has played its recycled instruments for former US President Jimmy Carter, and a Nobel Peace Prize winner. If anything, you may find yourself quite a bit closer to them in the very near future, if your mental energy has any say! You and a friend or colleague are struggling over some new rule or plan that doesn’t seem to make much sense to either of you. It’s good in the long run, as things should be much clearer as a result. Your big brain is bursting with ideas and plans right now, and while not all of them will pan out, you should at least see if you can work out a few of them. Get some help to see them through. Money is a bigger deal than you may realize right now — so make sure that you are paying close attention to its comings and goings. If your mate is also watching, the two of you can make a real difference. Your pride is a good thing on most days — but right now, it could go either way. It may make you more susceptible to emotional injury, or it could help you find an answer to a thorny problem. You may find that your old tools aren’t quite up to the job right now, so it’s time to stop, step back and think things through. The good news is that your clever mind can dream up something wonderful soon. You should find that you’re having much more fun than usual for now — so ramp it up and include others in the shenanigans! Your amazing social energy is great at coming up with new tricks. You need to deal with that problem at home — even if it’s a total drag! Your energy is just right for fixing things, dealing with kids and neighbors or even finding a new pace to live, so hop to it! Chat up everyone you know for now & opportunities will present themselves — post on Facebook, get on the phone until your battery dies or just sit down with your besties and gab until the sun is long down. Cash interests you inasmuch as it can be used to do things you want to do or acquire things you need in your life — and right now, it’s on your mind quite a bit. Puzzle it out and make a difference! You could power cities with your mental energy right now! On the off chance that you’re not hooked into the power grid, try instead to do some good for the world at large. You need to feel useful in the grand scheme of things, and at times like these, you can make a real difference in real people’s lives. Volunteer or speak up bravely to the right people. COMMON BOND Below are 3 separate puzzles. What do each group have in common? Answers at bottom. 1. Grace – Disney – Marine 2. Monopoly – A River – A Bobsled Track 3. Newspapers – Spreadsheets – Greek Architecture WORD THAT COME FROM? Gargoyle – These mysterious stone statues adorn churches and other buildings across Europe, but one thing that’s not mysterious about them is the origin of their name. “Gargoyle” is an Anglicization of the French word “gargouille”, which means throat—a reference to their most common use, as decorative spouts that directed rainwater out from the building through the statue’s mouth. The same root word survives in English as the verb “gargle”. The statues’ name was perhaps first published in Saint Erkenwald, a poem circa 1386: one section reads, “Hit was a throghe of thykke stone...With gargeles garnysht aboute, all of gray marbre.” (Translated: “It was a tomb of thick stone… with gargoyles garnished about, all of gray marble.”) OPTICALLY INCLINED Do you suffer from moderate to severe psoriasis?
