THE WAY
PREPARED
MATTHEW 3:1-12
5
THE INTER-TESTAMENT PERIOD
•
In Malachi’s time, Persia and the Medio-Persian
empire ruled (the temple had been restored).
•
Egypt ruled the area for a while, so did the Greeks.
•
When Jesus was born the Roman Empire was the
world leader.
6
THE INTER-TESTAMENT PERIOD
•
From approximately 420 B. C. until the appearance
of John the Baptizer.
•
Greek and Aramaic became the common language
for the Jewish people.
•
Translation of Hebrew scriptures into Koine Greek,
known as the Septuagint.
•
Establishment of the synagogue.
•
Production of Hebrew scripture/related writings=
Dead Sea Scrolls.
•
Production of 14 books of the Biblical Apocrypha.
7
THE INTER-TESTAMENT PERIOD
•
Two important political/religious groups emerge:
1. Pharisees:
Added to the Law of Moses through
oral tradition (Jesus railed against their
hollow legalism and lack of compassion)
2. Sadducees:
Represented the aristocrats and the
wealthy, wielding power through the
Sanhedrin; they rejected all but the
Mosaic books and did not believe in the
resurrection
8
WHO IS OUR AUTHOR?
•
The earliest Greek manuscripts included the title
“According to Matthew.”
•
Also the early church tradition unanimously
attributes this Gospel to Matthew.
•
A tax collector from Galilee ...
He left his tax booth and became a follower
(disciple/apostle) of Jesus (9:9; 10:3).
9
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
•
This Gospel provides an eyewitness testimony of a
close companion of Jesus, who
✤ saw His deeds,
✤ heard
✤ and
•
His words,
committed his words and deeds to memory.
That Jesus would select such a despised man (tax
collector) to serve as one of His twelve apostles is
an astonishing testament to God’s grace!
10
PURPOSE OF GOSPEL OF MATTHEW
•
To preserve the eyewitness testimony about
Jesus’ life and ministry.
•
To DECLARE that Jesus is the Messiah!
(catch phrase: “to fulfill what the prophets spoke”)
•
To emphasize Jesus as the King.
•
To give a strong Jewish focus, but with an
openness to Gentiles:
‣ Gentile visitors from the east,
‣ Roman centurion with great faith,
‣ and the “great commission.”

A reference to the coming
Messiah
John knew his role!
Linking Jesus with the
Holy Spirit equates
Jesus with Messiah!
(cleansing power of
Jesus’ work of salvation)
= depicts the hope of
changed lives
15
APPLICATION PRINCIPLES OF
STORING AND BURNING
•
Crucial roles of the Messiah:
1) He came to save people from sin:
He loses none who call on Him for salvation.
2) Messiah will judge those who reject Him.
•
JESUS, the GREAT SEPARATOR, who makes no
mistakes with the souls entrusted to Him!
