Education Newsletter Of The Mann Art Gallery
Winter 2013 | Volume 3, Edition 1
Editor: Twyla Exner
Notice anything different in our newsletter banner? The MAG is excited to announce a partnership with the
Victoria Square Compounding Pharmacy, with the shared vision of providing access to visual arts through educational initiatives! The one year
partnership, which launched in November 2012, was made possible
through the Business for the Arts ArtsVest program and has provided an
$18,000.00 sponsorship of the iMAGine Arts program! New initiatives
include lots of outreach activities at community organizations and events
and the unique opportunity for MAG programs on-site at the VSCP building. This partnership is beneficial for your schools! Programming at the
VSCP building includes the opportunity for exhibitions of student art in a
2,000 square foot space! More information on these and other exciting
opportunities are outlined in the following pages!
Gallery visits consist of a 30-45 minute interactive tour and a 45-60 minute hands on activity
that relates in theme and/or material to the display. We also offer flexible tour options that
can be adapted to suit the unique needs of
your students, providing a longer or shorter period in either the gallery or studio. Prior to your
tour, you will be emailed a teacher’s guide in
PDF form. The guide outlines information on
the artist(s) and/or exhibit and gives suggestions on pre and post activities you can do with
your class at school. We currently charge
$1.00 per student (minimum $15 per group);
teachers and chaperones attend for free. Prebooking is required. We recommend booking
tours at least 2 weeks in advance. Please
make cheques payable to the Mann Art Gallery, credit & cash are also accepted.

Second Annual
Main & Project Galleries: Feb 8-Mar 23, 2013
37th Annual
High School Juried Art Show
Winter Festival Juried Art Show & Sale
Project & Studio Galleries: June 04-18, 2013
About the Exhibition: The WFJAS started as an opportunity for community
members to showcase their artwork. Now entering its 37th year, the exhibition
features work from emerging & professional artists from Prince Albert, surrounding areas & across the province! Everyone is welcome to submit work to this juried exhibition, the only requirement is that they are a member of the MAG. A
guest juror chooses the artworks to be featured in the main gallery. All other
works are hung in the hallway & studio exhibition spaces. Community support is
shown through donations towards awards & professional development critiques.
Workshops round the show out to be a professional development opportunity for
all participating artists.
In the Gallery: We will walk & talk about the exhibition. Students will participate
in a scavenger hunt to identify key components in the juried artworks.

In the Studio:
We will be making artist trading cards! ATC’s
are miniature hockey card sized artworks that
are intended to be traded with others to build
a collection. The studio will be set up with
several stations, each with different art materials. At the beginning of the session, a short
demonstration will be given on each material.
Students will circulate through the stations to
create their art cards. They will be asked to
make a few cards, some to keep and some to
leave behind. At the end of the exhibition, the
cards will be divided up & distributed to other
schools, so each participant will receive a
card made by another student in the City.

MAG staff will make selections from the
submissions of pieces to be included in the

Artist trading card
exhibition & trading bonanza
Main Gallery: April 02– May 26, 2013
Dianna Thorneycroft
May 01-June 01, 2013
At the Victoria Square Compounding Pharmacy Building
What it is:
This event is targeted at all ages & we are relying on YOUR participation to make it a success! Artist
trading cards are small, adaptable to any area of the curriculum, & can be made with any & all art materials! The event will provide an opportunity for students to have their miniature artworks displayed in
a public building with artist cards made by seniors, adults, artists & students from other schools, cities
& even other provinces!
About the Exhibition: Diana Thorneycroft’s exhibition of large scale photos feature children’s toys &
fabricated landscapes, carefully arranged to tell a story. The arrangements depict crimes committed
against our most vulnerable citizens: the disadvantaged, the uneducated & the young. At the time of
each violation the victims were ignored, disbelieved or considered expendable. These photos illustrate
aspects of Canadian history that many would like to ignore or forget.
In the Gallery: We will look closely at the artworks & discuss key elements in their arrangements. In groups, students will match stories to the photos.
When it is:
The exhibition will be on display from May 01-June 01, 2013. Friends, family, teachers & friends are
welcome to a public reception and trading bonanza taking place Saturday, June 01 from 1:00-3:00pm.
Refreshments will be served. Can’t make the reception to trade? No problem. Remaining cards will
be swapped & dropped at participating schools. Your students will receive a surprise traded card from
another participant.
In the Studio:
In groups, students will write a short (1-3 sentence) story
that they would like to tell through art. Using plasticine &
toys, students will create their story & photograph it using
a digital camera. Photographs will be emailed to teachers or provided on a disc or jump drive (if you bring one).

How to participate:
Option #1: Book a tour for your class at the MAG during the Winter Festival Juried Art
Show & Sale from February 08– March 23. The studio project for this exhibition is Artist Trading
Cards & the MAG will retain one of the cards that each of your students makes to include in the exhibition.
Option #2: Book a time for the MAG educator to come to your school & facilitate an Artist Trading
Card workshop. We even bring pre-cut cards and a whole carton of really fun art supplies! We have
suggested themes for each grade OR can work with you to fit the project into your curriculum. We will
come FREE of charge!
Option #3: Facilitate an Artist Trading Card session in your own classroom yourself. Consult our list
of suggested themes (please email for list) or come up with your own trading card projects! Request
pre-cut trading cards to be dropped at your school to reduce your prep work. Drop completed cards at
the MAG or request a pick up & we will come to your school to get them.

Spread & Tromper
About the Exhibition:
Regina Artist Carmela Laganse presents sculptural ceramics
and mixed media artworks from two distinct bodies of work.
The exhibitions will both be presented in the Main Gallery
space with dividing walls separating one body of work from
the other. Spread features furniture-like artworks that are a
type of serving dish for vampires. These unique artworks
position the body to be “fed-on” by the mythological creatures. Tromper explores the ritualization of gambling and its
connection to technologies & children’s games.
Carmel Laganse, 2010
Grenadine from the series “Spread”
In the Gallery:
We will look closely at the art works & how they position bodies in different
ways. Using our own bodies, we will work in groups to see how we can
manipulate our bodies in various positions to affect one another. We will
each have a chance to play with an interactive work presented in the gallery.
Carmela Laganse, 2012
FAB 1 from the series Tromper
In the Studio:
Grades 4-12: Students will create a furniture-like sculptures inspired by
the artworks from the Spread series using wood, wire, fabric, air dry clay
and other bits and pieces.
Grades K-3: Students will use bingo dabbers and large papers to play a
bingo-inspired game that creates an artwork.
Please note that the exhibition dates for Carmela Laganse and Diana Thorneycroft have been swapped from the “At a
Glance” calendar that was sent to you in the fall. All programs & activities are subject to change.

Prince Albert & area is invited to submit student work to this
juried exhibition! All mediums are encouraged. Works will

Pop Art Live!
Pop Art Live draws inspiration from
the artworks of Roy Lichtenstein. After looking at examples & learning
about pop art, students will paint their
own backgrounds, make word bubbles with phrases that pertain to their
lives & then paint each others’ faces
using washable face paint. We will then photograph the
students in front of their work.
Time Commitment: 4 hours, can be split over 2 days.
Materials needed: You supply the paint & paper. MAG
will bring face paint & a digital camera.
Cost: $1.00 per student, minimum $15.00 per day
Artist Trading Cards!
Artist trading cards are hockey card sized artworks that are intended
to be traded & collected. ATC’s provide a perfect format to share
ideas surrounding identity, Saskatchewan voices & place, especially
when trading with groups from other schools &/or other communities in
Saskatchewan or Canada. Students will make several cards on a
theme decided upon by the teacher & MAG educator. The MAG educator will facilitate an ATC workshop at your school & will find another
school and/or community group for an in-person or mail card exchange. Have your students exchange cards with PA seniors, students from a Northern Saskatchewan school or kids from community
groups in Winnipeg or the Yukon!
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours.
Materials needed: The MAG will bring pre-cut cards & our ATC kit
which includes collage materials, stickers, stamps, paper textures, textured scissors, etc. Students can bring their own art materials such as
markers, glue, pencil crayons, etc.
Cost: FREE
En Masse Inspired Paintings!
En masse (from French) - “as a whole” or “all together”. En mass is a Montreal-based collective who
work with large groups to create black and white murals. Classes will work together on multiple canvases
that puzzle together to create a small “mural” style
painting. We will use only one colour on a primed
background to help unify the artworks. Empty spaces
between central figures or words will be filled with
simple textures to finish a cohesive piece.
Time Commitment: 4+ hours, dependent on desired
scope of project. Can be split over multiple days.
Materials Needed: MAG will supply paint & brushes.
Schools provide canvas or cover cost of canvas.
Cost: $1.00 per student, minimum $15.00 per day.
