Guiding Principles:
A Message to Our Community
Acting in the best interests of children. Support for families. Respect for the values and cultures of families.
Appropriate input from children. Appropriate involvement of children.
The year 2003 marks the tenth year since its organization that the Saskatoon Preschool Foundation has
worked toward helping children in this community!
We are proud of that.
Vision Statement: We see all preschool children having opportunities for a better future and becoming
successful participants in society. We see quality preschool programs diminishing the impact of poverty
on children and families and on our community. As a
result of increased parent participation in preschool
programs, we see greater support for children’s education. We see preschool programs expanding as
needs are identified and as finances become available.
Highlights in 2003 include a significant increase in the
number of families who applied for preschool tuition
subsidy assistance. As a result, children from approximately 100 families were able to attend preschool.
The cost of this totaled more than $32,000.
Mission Statement: To advocate for and support
access to quality preschool programs for Saskatoon
children.
Thanks to your donations, this expense was covered!
Issues to be overcome include greater promotion of
the Foundation so that more people are aware of our
programs. As well, more attention to importance of
preschool is required.
The Foundation is important to the Saskatoon community. Likewise, the many donors and partners listed later in this report are important to the
Foundation!

Nominations
The Saskatoon Preschool Foundation Board welcomed four new members this year.
Jan Boyachek is a Senior Consultant with AON
Consulting in Saskatoon. She brings a strong background in business and financial management and a
commitment to the children of our community.
Phyllis Fowler is the Program Director for Integrated
School-Linked Services at Nutana Collegiate and a
member of the School Plus Coordinating Team for
Saskatoon Public Schools. A recipient of the Educator
of Distinction Award and a YWCA Woman of the Year,
she brings to the Foundation commitment to working
with families and community partnerships to support
young people in completing their education.
Diane Selby is a retired principal from Saskatoon
Public Schools and a member of the Board of
Maggie’s Daycare. Diane brings a wealth of experience with children and families and a commitment to
creating opportunities for the youngest and most vulnerable members of our community.

Lynda Tysowski is a resource room teacher in the
Saskatoon Public Schools. She has worked in a number of capacities in the school system—as a classroom
teacher, a resource room teacher, an administrator
and a consultant. She brings to the Board a love of
children and a passion for education.
The Foundation said farewell
to five outgoing Board members:
Lynda McLean-Woodward, Past President, took leave
to spend time with family members in Australia and
other parts of the world; Jean Bacon has relocated to
Lands West School Division; Linda Graves accepted a
position as Principal in Vernon, BC; Nadine Gurski,
after working on seven Educators of Distinction
Dinners, has retired from the Board to devote more
time to her family and to her real estate practice; and
Karon Shmon has assumed a new position which
involves a considerable amount of travel.
We thank them for their service to the Saskatoon
Preschool Foundation and to the children of our community.
Rita Priestley, President
Planned Gifts
The Planned Giving Committee encourages the public
to consider the tax advantages of donating a significant gift to the Foundation.
Ron Hirsch, Chairperson
Programming Support and Advocacy
The Programming Support and Advocacy Committee
was established to keep abreast of the needs of preschool children in the city.
Brian and Loretta Hartsook were invited to attend the
December meeting of the Board to provide an update
on current results of the national research project,
Understanding the Early Years, undertaken in thirteen communities in Canada. Coordinated by HRDC
and involving faculty from McMaster University, the
national research project is designed to provide communities with information with respect to health,
recreation, daycare, libraries and education. Brian
and Loretta reviewed the research process and highlighted findings for the Saskatoon component of the
research.
The Executive Director, President, and Vice President
met with the Directors of each of the School Divisions
to highlight the work of the Saskatoon Preschool
Foundation and to discuss ways that the Foundation
could be responsive to the needs of families with preschool children in Saskatoon.
Rita Priestley, Chairperson
Public Relations
The Public Relations Committee members work to
promote the Saskatoon Preschool Foundation at its
major fund raising events. The Educator of Distinction
Dinner and the Fall into Fashion Show and Brunch.
They also support the Foundation by working at the
Sears Tree of Hope Campaign, the Human Services
Resource Fair, and this year with several classes of
preschool children to prepare the artwork for awards
at our Dinner. The committee including Mona
Etcheverry, Shirley Green, Anne Maduke, Craig
Peterson, Shirley Spence, and Les Ferguson work with
the local media to make our events so successful. We
appreciate the support given to us by the Star
Phoenix and the local radio and television stations.
Please make note of our Website at www.spf.sk.ca for
more information about the Foundation and upcoming events.
Margaret Martin, Chairperson
A survey requesting enrollment data was distributed
to all preschools.
