Welcome to Toronto
I'd like to extend a special welcome to guests of the
Windsor Arms Hotel as you visit historic Yorkville in the
heart of Toronto.
I hope you can take the time to get out and about. Bloor
Street and environs offer some of the city's finest shops. The
heritage district of Yorkville is a treasure and a delight to
stroll through and enjoy a cappuccino or a meal in one of
the fine restaurants.
You'll find Toronto to be a safe and welcoming city. If you
need any assistance, don't hesitate to ask the Windsor
Arms staff or any of the merchants in the area. We want
you to enjoy your stay, and if there's anything we can do
to make it a more enjoyable one, don't hesitate to ask. It is
our pleasure to make you welcome here.
Enjoy your stay, and please visit us again soon.
I remain,

A Call to Arms
The History of
The Windsor Arms Hotel
| text | Zack Medicoff |
At
the Windsor Arms, history and new-millennium
amenities are fused together to create a delicate balance of
old-world charm and modern decadence.
In fact, the building dates back to 1927 when the University
of Toronto, with its neo-Gothic buildings and distinctive
piers, porches, and crests were architectural marvels of the
burgeoning metropolis.
And that’s exactly how hotelier, William Arthur Price,
envisioned the four-storey building way back in the 30s. The
original idea was to create a hotel residence to blend in with
the university’s signature, Victorian buildings.
When completed, guests and passersby wondered whether
Price had stamped the outside crest with his initials or that of
the hotel. The question still remains to this day.
Years later, in 1966, the hotel entered Toronto’s culinary scene,
opening its restaurant, Three Small Rooms. The Courtyard Café
was launched in 1976 and that same year, Club 22 opened as
part of the city’s growing nightlife.

By the late 80s years of
neglect took hold, which is
probably why in 1991, the
Windsor Arms was shut
down with no prospects of reopening—that is, until developer
George Friedmann sparked a vision of resurrection.
After purchasing the property in 1995, Friedmann
commissioned architect, Sol Wassermuhl of Page + Steele to
maintain the original characteristics from the stained glass
window facing St. Thomas Street to the stone portico and
vestibule in the entrance, but otherwise to completely rebuild
the hotel and add condominium homes atop. Consultants from
around the world descended on the plans and the results were
custom mahogany furnishings based on 1920s French styles,
rooms with cozy fireplaces, and bathrooms with limestone
floors and walls, all in a modern, contemporary setting.

In May 1999, with 28 unique suites ranging from 500 to
1,500 square feet, conference rooms, and a spa, the hotel
reopened to fanfare and accolades. Following this auspicious
rebirth, 25 condominiums — the city's most luxurious — with
access to all hotel services were created atop the
hotel. The New York Times say’s: “Classic Toronto
haunt stands smartly again. ”Rooms were outfitted with
state-of-the-art entertainment systems but retained homey
like crisp, buttery-soft, 320-threadcount, Frette bed linens.
The tearoom, with its original 1927 fireplace, is modelled
around that same mid-twentieth-century elegance. Even the spa
glows with old-world serenity mixed with a contemporary feel.

Nowadays, the Windsor Arms Hotel is home to visiting
A-listers, big-ticket musicians, and prestigious jet-setters.
The hotel has hosted fashion shoots and exclusive parties, and
boasts new offerings such as the cigar room and barbershop.

A guide for adding the perfect
toppings to your stay
“There’s nothing we can’t do,” says George Friedmann,
the person behind Windsor Arms Hotel. “I once had a guest
who frequented the hotel, and before one of his arrivals
he called us up to fill his tub with JELL-O. That’s right — JELL-O.
You know how our concierge responded? He asked,
‘what flavour?’”.
Perhaps you won’t be asking for a Jacuzzi filled with 256
boxes of JELL-O, but maybe a rose petal bath at 2 a.m. to
soothe achy soles after a night out? Or maybe your pooch
needs to be walked before dinner? There’s no task too big or
small for the service and attention of the Windsor Arms staff.
Even something as simple as having mashed potatoes instead
of French fries with your fish and chips — we’ll always
remember what you like and deserve while you are in our
home and away from home.
Here are some benefits of our hotel’s dedication:
Butler’s Cupboard
Place your laundry, dry cleaning, shoes to be shined, or room
service trays in the cupboard and our butler will retrieve or
return items without any disturbance. Our in-house butler is
available 24 hours a day to help you with bags, set up drivers,
or handle your day-to-day needs.

All suites offer high-speed Internet, state-of-the-art sound system,
bedside light-control console, VCR or DVD player, AM/FM
radio, and CD player. Separate control panels in the bedroom
and bathroom allow for simultaneous radio and CD selections.
Jacuzzi tubs are included in all of the rooms and suites.
Hot Tickets and Trendy Eats
Our concierge can accommodate any entertainment desire,
whether it’s the hottest ticket in town or a sought-after restaurant
reservation whether with us or outside the hotel. Just ask for
suggestions on where to dine and what’s happening around the
city. Let us know if you have any dietary restrictions and we’ll
accommodate your room service and restaurant reservations
accordingly.

Luxury Service
Our staff to guest ratio (6:1) is the highest in Canada and our
management to guest room ratio is 1:1. That means we are at
your beck and call any time of the day or night. Room service
is available 24 hours a day and if something’s not on the menu,
we’ll do it anyway.
Eat like a Chef
For a true, culinary experience, reserve our Chef’s Table, a
tasting meal of 5 courses served in the kitchen at a cooktop
table accommodating up to 10 diners.
Need some Space?
Ask about The Courtyard Café to invigorate your palate

staying at Toronto’s most luxurious hotel, you can
experience fine dining at the Courtyard Café. Adjacent to the
lobby, you will notice the elegant dining room beautifully
wrought with elegant textures reminiscent of the late romantic
era. Whether it’s a formal business setting you require or a
warm and intimate dinner for two, the beauty of the Courtyard
Café isn’t only skin deep. For beyond the impeccable wait staff,
a brilliant dining experience awaits you.
Breakfast at the Courtyard Café is the
perfect way to start your day; you’ll
feel as though you’ve been swept away to one of the sweetest
boulangeries in Paris. The breakfast menu offers a diverse
selection of delectable dishes and organic produce, whether
your palate seeks something light and simple or scrumptiously
decadent. The lunch menu is also very accommodating; lighter
fare such as gazpacho, lobster salad, and simply grilled,
line-caught fish with lemon verbena oil provide an ethereal
experience, while a juicy Kobe beef burger on a brioche bun
fulfills a healthier appetite.

Style and Substance
Once you’ve tried breakfast and lunch at the Courtyard Café,
dinner is the not-to-be-missed pièce de la résistance. Sushi
lovers most certainly will rejoice at the thinly sliced yellowfin
tuna carpaccio served with pickled green papaya and
Japanese horseradish foam. Equally wonderful is the succulent
wild salmon slowly poached in an aromatic truffle stock, and
the East Coast lobster poached in a beurre monte is to die for.
Meat lovers should indulge themselves with the juicy 12-ounce
Sterling with blue cheese butter on top of a mushroom jus, or
the luscious veal steak with rum, plantains, and a superb Creole
mustard cream.
The desserts are all created in-house to seduce the eyes and
delight the palate. So whatever you might choose — from a
mélange of summer's freshest sorbets to a sampler of
scrumptious cakes to our unique banana popsicles — you'll be
sure to find a sweet finish to your dining pleasure at the
Courtyard Café.

Wines of the

staying at the Windsor Arms Hotel, explore the
wonderful selection of fine champagnes and wines as well as
cognacs, single malts and blended scotches acquired at great
lengths by George Friedmann. And while you’re at it, nothing
goes better with a fine glass of champagne or cognac than the
Windsor Arms’ selection of caviar — Sevruga, Oscietre, and
Beluga — with your choice of blini or toasted brioche.
The wine cellar does possess
a respectable collection of
white wine from around the
world, whether you prefer
Chablis from Burgundy, a
1998 Riesling Schlossberg
Grand Cru, a 1998 Langtry
Meritage Sauvignon Blanc &
Sémillon from the Guenoc
Valley in Sonoma County, or
the masterpiece 1983 Moulin
Touchais Côteau Du Layon.
But it’s the collection of
special and rare red wines
that George has acquired
from wine auctions that
deserves to be celebrated.

“Good Wine Carrieth

1993 was a fantastic year and the Chianti Classico by Castello
Di Ama (Castle of Loves) from the vineyard Casuccia is a rare
and beautiful Tuscan wine, as is the 1996 Sassicaia from the
Tenuta San Guido estate in the Bolgheri region, considered to
be one of the best of the “Super-Tuscan” wines. The Windsor
Arms also has a formidable collection of Barolos, Barbarescos,
and a 1995 Amarone Della Valpolicella by Veneto region’s
“grape king,” Dal Forno Romano.
The most admirable section of the Windsor Arms wine cellar is
the rich collection of reds from France. Every celebrated region
is well represented from Burgundy with Côte De Beaune and
Côte De Nuits, to Rhone with Languedoc-Roussillon, and most
especially, Bordeaux. George has selected the best of every
year from 1970 through to 2002, including the highly famed
1979 Château Petrus Pomerol, the elegant 1985 Château
Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien, and the powerful and virile
1975 Château Latour Premier Grand Cru Classé Pauillac. And
for the ultimate wine enthusiast, you won’t find a bottle of the
1918 Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac anywhere else in
the city.
For those that prefer the advice of others, the Windsor Arms
boasts Special Feature Selections priced from modest to
extravagant, but all ranked 90 or above by Wine Spectator
and Robert Parker.

The Windsor Arms Pool
Refresh yourself before or after a long day with a few laps in
our beautiful, fireside pool. Bromine salts, a substitute for
chlorine without chlorine’s harsh properties, ensures that you
won’t feel the usual, drying effects of swimming in a pool. Your
skin will thank you! Remember: before taking a dip, turn on the
sauna next door and let the warmth dry your body after
your swim.
Steamy
After a long drive or flight, our steam rooms, located inside the
changing rooms, take seconds to reach full steam and offer a
true pore-opening experience.
Darphin – the crème de la crème of beauty care
At the Windsor Arms, whether in your room or in the spa, you’ll
find the highest quality beauty products for face, hair and body
provided by Darphin, the leading supplier of luxury skin care
and makeup. A Darphin technician is always on call at the spa

Yorkville in a
nutshell
The History of Canada's Premier Neighbourhood
| text | Elayne Laken |
One
of Toronto’s main attractions is its diverse and eclectic
neighbourhoods. Little Italy’s laid-back cafés, the entertainment
district’s world-renowned theatres, and Queen West’s art
galleries are just a few threads in its cultural mosaic.
But Yorkville, the Canadian shopping mecca that epitomizes
decadence and luxury, stands above the rest with the city’s most
posh residences, boutiques, and restaurants.
The tiny strip of Bloor Street West at the southern edge of
Yorkville, which many call the Mink Mile, wasn’t always a
hotbed of fashion and style. Back in the mid-1800s it was a
middle-class suburb of Victorian mews, picturesque gardens,
and quiet, tree-lined streets.
In 1923, The Ezras Noshem Society established the 33-bed
Toronto Hebrew Maternity and Convalescent Hospital on
Yorkville Avenue. That same year, it was renamed Mount Sinai
Hospital and counted a staff of 40 Jewish doctors. Countless
innovations from
cataract surgery to
joint
transplants
were developed
right in the locale.

Yorkville remained solely residential until the early 1950s but
by the late 60s, it had become the locus of flower power when
bohemian squatters took over the dilapidated abodes, which
they called “pads”. Musicians such as Neil Young, Gordon
Lightfoot, and Joni Mitchell launched their careers playing to
young, revolutionary Canadians in the area’s many coffee
houses.
The 70s witnessed the creation of the original Hazelton Lanes,
which then evolved into a chi-chi shopping centre with
designer stores and trendy eats. Over the years, buildings like
the Manulife Centre at Bay and Bloor, libraries, and recreation
centres were constructed to serve the city’s growing needs.
The beautifully ornate, Victorian-era dwellings were restored
and refurbished in the mid-80s, which in turn promoted a spate
of antique and design shops along with art galleries and
nightclubs.
Perhaps the largest attraction in the area is the prestigious
Toronto International Film Festival, which takes place each
September. Conceived by visionary Piers Handling in 1976,
the ten-day glam fest considers Yorkville its epicentre for the
upscale attractions adorned by global VIPs.
With this in mind, the district’s future is one of prosperity. Walk
along the cobblestone streets, narrow alleyways, and
courtyards to discover that there’s never been a more vital and
energetic time to be in Toronto, and no better place than
Bloor/Yorkville — truly the crown jewel of the metropolis.

Toronto

is a city of neighbourhoods, each with its own
distinct character. The Bloor Street/Yorkville neighbourhood
(roughly bordered by Yonge Street to the east, Avenue Road to
the west, Bloor Street to the south, and Yorkville Avenue to the
north) is Canada’s shopping mecca and is right at your
doorstep. Bloor Street, or The Mink Mile, is easily compared to
New York’s Fifth Avenue and L.A.’s Rodeo Drive. And in
the heart of Yorkville, north of Bloor, you’ll be delighted to
discover art galleries, boutiques and must-see shops hidden in
its narrow alleyways. Here, to help you plan your shopping
excursion, are the highlights of this most exciting and stylish of
Toronto neighbourhoods.

Designer shops such as Chanel, Cole Haan, Prada, Plaza
Escada, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co., Hermès, Bvlgari,
Cartier, and Gucci line Bloor Street along with Canadian

large selection of exclusive eyewear. Big chain shops such as
The Gap, H&M, Banana Republic, Pottery Barn, WilliamsSonoma, Max Mara and Zara are also on the strip.
Women
Betsey Johnson carries funky dresses, colourful skirts and
amazing tops while Jeanne Lottie Fashions stocks fabulous
bags. Milli has fabulous couture dresses and must-have hand
bags; The Wolford Boutique has brilliant hosiery and

colourful fashions. Augustina is great for hard-to-find
accessories and exclusive jewellery. Pir Cosmetics carries the
