When was the last time you felt that you were doing something
that would make a difference in people’s lives? Well, here is
your opportunity! We are seeking several new board members
this Fall. We have only one employee and she is fabulous, but
she cannot do it all. We depend on our Board and other volunteers to help make SWH a wonderful home for 9 women and
their children. If you have experience in property management, public relations, fundraising or construction or know someone who does, we could use
this expertise. Maybe you do not have the skills listed above, but have some
time and would love to help out a nonprof it, we would also love to hear from
you. We believe volunteering is more than just donating your time. It’s fun,
social, and meaningful. So please give us a call so we can discuss opportunities and give you a tour of our houses.
Volunteer Spotlight:
Peg & Dan
Millender
Serving at least four 3-year
terms on the Susanna Wesley
House Board of Directors, Peg
Millender is the longest
serving member currently on
the board. She has been
Treasurer, Vice President and
President, and is now chair of
the 609 property committee
and a member of the 607
building committee. As if this
weren’t enough, for the last
two years she has co-chaired the “Inspired to Serve” Annual Fundraiser (don’t
miss this year’s on September 18th!). Let’s not forget her work on getting the
newsletter prepared for bulk mailing and taking it to the main post off ice 3
times a year. Oh, and she’s also quite possibly the nicest lady you’ve ever met!
The embodiment of service, Peg is a big reason that Susanna Wesley House
(SWH) has been such a success.
It stands to reason that such a wonderful lady would have an equally wonderful spouse, right? Peg’s husband Dan, a retired f ire f ighter, is another of our
“silent weapons” who regularly pitches in at SWH doing

Eloise Bright Finds Creative Way To Support
SWH While Celebrating Her 90th Birthday
Happy Birthday to Eloise V. Bright,
who celebrated her 90th birthday with
family and friends on Saturday, May
22, 2010 at Club Meade (formerly Ft.
Meade Off icer’s Club). The photo at
left is of Mrs. Bright being escorted
into the event by her son, Terrence
Bright. In lieu of gifts, attendees were
asked to make a donation to the
Susanna Wesley House in honor of her
birthday. Donations totaling $645 were
made by her friends and family: Anna
Black, Margaret Brown, Yolande
Dickerson, Daisy DuBose, Julia Freeman & Clementine Carter,
Dorothy Green, Samuel H. & Jacqueline Harris, Columbus
Howard & Gennifer Taylor, Emma Jordan, Judith Lopez, Andrea
Montague, Geraldine Smith, Lucille Thomas, Evelyn Thompson,
Helen Tilghman, Andrea Turner, Mr. & Mrs. Clarence Edward
Vaughn, Dorothy Weddington, and Esther White.
Mrs. Bright is a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church
(Glen Burnie) and is an active member of the United Methodist
Women (UMW). She served as her UMW unit’s representative and
communications liason to Susanna Wesley House, which motivated
her to become more involved after retirement. When health allowed,
she supported SWH fundraising projects, giving not only of her time,
but also f inancially. Look for her name on the Donor Wall the next
time you visit!
Mrs. Bright’s involvement in Susanna Wesley House inspired her
daughter, Jamarri Bright, to volunteer also. Ms. Bright currently is a
member of the SWH Finance Committee.
Susanna Wesley House Receives Grant
For Window Upgrades From
The Patterson Memorial Foundation
The Board of Directors extends its sincere thanks to the Patterson
Memorial Association for their generosity in awarding a $13,000 grant
to replace the back door and several leaky windows. This project will
make SWH a safer and more comfortable home for the women and
children who live here. It will also provide a greater degree of energy
eff iciency which we anticipate will reduce our energy consumption
and carbon footprint.
Fourteen new windows were installed on July 27/28 and a new back
door will be here shortly. We are excited to have these upgrades in
place before the cold weather begins!

Say "I Do" for a cause How your wedding can help SWH
There are so many different ways to support the mission of
Susanna Wesley House. Like Eloise's birthday party gifts, just
about any event can be turned into an opportunity to help
homeless women & children.
Getting Married? Your wedding can help maintain a home for
the homeless women and children in need at Susanna Wesley
House! It’s so simple, and no cost to you— simply register your
wedding at www.IDoFoundation.org and nominate SWH as
your charity of choice. There are many options—including
partner stores that will donate up to 10% of your wedding gift
purchases to charity. Or, for the couple who already has everything, create a charity registry. You can even make a donation in
lieu of wedding favors. It’s the most important day of your life,
and celebrating it in a way that will help others is the ultimate
expression of your love.
Your On-line Shopping Can
Help Susanna Wesley House!
We were so inspired by Mrs. Bright's creativity in
supporting SWH that we went in search of other,
outside-the-box fundraising ideas and came across
We-Care.com. It's the newest way to support
Susanna Wesley House. The best part is that one
simple download to each computer you shop from will
automatically (and securely) allow a percentage of
your purchase to benefit SWH whenever you visit a
participating merchant - at no additional cost to you!
Simply go to www.SusannaWesley.We-Care.com/
Start to get started. It takes less than a minute and
costs nothing, so what are you waiting for?
Weinberg Grant Update
As we reported in the last issue of Susanna's
Chronicles, we have received a grant from the
Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Foundation Maryland
Small Grants Program, representing 30% of several
upgrades and repairs around the building. To date, the
roof has been repaired, new kitchen floors have been
installed, and new toys to inspire imagination have
been purchased for the SKIP room. We're counting
on your generosity for the other 70% of these
projects. We know you'll come through for the
women and children who call SWH their home.
Donate On-Line at
SusannaWesley.org
Our online giving option is a big hit! Why don't you
give it a try today? Just visit our web site at
www.SusannaWesley.org, click on "how to help",
then click on the "Donate Now" button to make a
secure donation on-line. No stamps or visits to the
post office - it's that easy!
Say "I gave at the office" through United Way
While Susanna Wesley House is not a United Way agency,
you may designate SWH to receive your United Way gift
through your place of employment. Simply enter the SWH
number, 887175 (or 2799 for the MD Employee Campaign),
and write our name and address on your form: Susanna
Wesley House, 609 Park Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21201. If you have any difficulty – and some people do, please
contact us at 410-837-3787. Some employers incorrectly direct employees to designate only agencies that are listed. You
may designate any organization that has a United Way number, as long as you also include the name and address of the
organization. Thank you for supporting Susanna Wesley House through your United Way employment giving program.

Mother's Day at Susanna Wesley House
Gifts of
flower pots, flowers,
paints, stickers and other
materials were purchased
with a donation from the Bel
Air UMW group. Pam Pryor, the
case worker supplied by our
partner organization, the Women's
Housing Coalition, snapped these
pictures of the children hard at
work and displaying their
projects. The kids really enjoyed the activity, and the
moms were thrilled with
their Mother's Day
gifts!
See What Our Residents Are Up To
Another Successful Move! Ms. M and her two children have moved on to a
referred supportive housing program. She is now employed by the MTA.
New Resident Ms. B moved in June 15th. Before coming to SWH, she was a
resident at The Bennett, run by our partner organization, the Women's Housing
Coaltion. We are happy to welcome her to SWH, where she will be able to be
reunited with her 11 year old daughter this Fall.
Susanna's Kids Are Making the Most of the

About Our Speakers
Mary Joel Davis is the founder of Alternative Directions, Inc. (ADI),
and served as its Executive Director for 27 years. The only program
funded by the MD Legal Services Program that goes directly into prisons,
ADI focuses on parole based re-entry and finding meaningful work for
women being released from prison. Ms. Davis is a MD Nonprofit Advocacy Leader, a Weinberg Fellow, and a Fellow with the Urban Institute in
Washington, DC.
Ms. Davis has a unique ability to bring community agencies into the fold to
work together to improve the lives of this often forgotten segment of the
population. Her dedication has resulted in the creation of several additional programs: the Turn About Program (TAP), which combines pre and
post release services to address substance abuse, transportation, housing,
education and employment; the ADI Positive Directions program, which
assisted men and women leaving prison with housing, ID documents,
addictions counseling and pre-employment classes; the After-Care Transition program (ACT), to provide monthly information workshops to men
and women about to be released from prison; and an ADI Advocacy
Project giving ex-offenders and others an opportunity to participate in the
political and public information process. We thank Ms. Davis for sharing
with us her insights and inspiration to serve disadvantaged and neglected
members of our society.
Sue Verrillo is Nurse Manager of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation for The Johns
Hopkins Hospital. In February, she served on
board the USNS Comfort in Haiti as a member of
the Johns Hopkins Go Team. The Go Team is a
multidisciplinary group trained to respond to
disasters, and is funded through a federal grant.
An agreement with the U. S. Navy and Johns
Hopkins Medicine led to the deployment of an
ongoing stream of medical personnel for the
Comfort mission in Haiti. Volunteers, including Ms.
Verrillo, spent two weeks in small teams staffing and responding to the
emergency and continuing care needs of the victims of the massive
earthquake that shook the small island nation of Haiti in January.
Throughout her career, Ms. Verillo has been involved in numerous aspects
of nursing, including patient care, research, administration, mentoring and
teaching. We thank Ms. Verrillo for sharing her unique volunteer experience aboard the USNS Comfort.

everything from landscaping to changing
light bulbs to shoveling snow in the back
yard (about 5’ this past year!), usually with
Peg by his side. The couple also takes it upon
themselves to decorate for Christmas. Dan is
a board member and spends countless hours
each week volunteering as a farmer and
administrator at First Fruits Farm, Inc., a
ministry providing fresh produce and beef to
various shelters, soup kitchens and food
banks. Donations from FFF often f ind their
way to SWH along with gifts of fresh fruits
and vegetables from their own extensive
garden.
In accordance with our by-laws, board
members may serve only two consecutive
three year terms. We are sad to report that
Peg must leave the board after 2010, and we
hope to have her back after a year off. Our
