Annual Report 2013-2014 - Anchor House Ministries
Anchor House Ministries 2013-2014 Annual Report Report from the Board President Kathy Bucklew It has been my honor and privilege to serve my Lord as President of the Board of Directors at Anchor House Ministries. My husband, Bill, and I raised 24 boys in a foster live-in facility much like Anchor House and our hearts are tender toward their plight and circumstances. I pray regularly that God would grant me, and the rest of the distinguished Board of Directors, wisdom and discernment as we conduct the affairs of Anchor House. I also thank God for our faithful supporters and friends who have partnered with me in saving the lives of the young boys at Anchor House, giving them safety, support, love, and hope. Two thousand thirteen was a year of challenges and celebrations for Anchor House. It was with grave hearts that we accepted the resignation of our executive director, Dr. Michael Staples. And it was with joyful hearts we welcomed baby McKenna into the world, the daughter of our Office Manager, Sandy Agens, and husband, Paul, who was born on August 22. The Board of Directors felt it prudent to engage a consultant to audit Anchor House’s finances, programs, and operations before initiating a search for a new Executive Director. Our final report had its challenges and celebrations as well. We learned that Anchor House was strong programmatically and meeting its goals to provide loving Godly care to our boys and we discovered that we needed to make several expensive changes to improve our facility and grounds to meet the requirements of our major referral services. We celebrated with the hire of Dr. Joe Davis in December 2014 who has come on board bringing many talents, skills, and lots of energy. We were thankful to Fredric Velez, Program Director, who had performed “double duty” for us during our interim period. If you have not met Dr. Davis, make a point of stopping by – you will quickly see that we are headed for great things under his leadership! On November 7, 2013 Papa Joe Bradford endeared us all as our guest speaker for our annual banquet. His mission is much like Anchor House's; serving the needs of neglected boys. The entire staff of Anchor House was thrilled to celebrate and honor Dundy Sigler as well for the faithful support she and her husband have given over the years. North Lakeland Presbyterian Church blessed us with a gift of $4,200 from the annual golf tournament. Nothing like having fun for a good cause! Our water bottle campaign brought in $6,000 dollars in gifts and St. Paul Lutheran Church absolutely floored us with a truck load of food - $5,000 worth donated by their church members. Thank you Lord for every gift – whether it was a swing of a golf club, some lose change in a water bottle, or a package of spaghetti! We could not make it without the faithful thoughtful support from all of you. It is with humility and a servant’s heart, I am pleased to report that Anchor House has reached a new high in residents served – we are growing. The many gifts given, of both time and money, are too numerous to list in this short letter. We know you will grow with us as our needs increase because we serve a mighty God. Be blessed. In His Service, Kathy Bucklew Report from the Executive Director Dr. Joe Davis Five months ago I decided to accept the position of executive director of Anchor House Ministries. It has been quite a challenging, and at the same time, exhilarating experience. Part of my joy is seeing the devoted men and women of Anchor House pour their lives into transforming broken lives. We really do have a great group of people here. The other part is seeing young men who walk through our doors find hope and find Christ. Recently, one of the young men who had been going through a tough time sat down and talked with me about his struggles. At the end, I encouraged him to seek the Lord and to believe that God had created him special and with unseen gifts and abilities. I ended our conversation by telling him that I believed in him and saw his ability to make it. He responded by saying no one had ever believed in him before. Transforming broken lives is hard work, and at times, ungrateful work, but every now and then the light shines through the darkness and new life is born. As I first began the job at Anchor House, I realized immediately that our financial situation was challenging. Income estimates were down $100,000 from the previous year. Given the situation of our declining income, our first order of business was to secure the organization’s survival. Our second order of business was to not merely survive but dream new dreams. As a result, with the board’s backing, we embarked upon a bold and aggressive course. We decided to give Anchor House a much needed facelift by pouring funds into our appearance. It was to be sure a step of faith. However, our initiatives of faith bear evidence of proper strategy. Not only did we upgrade the outside appearance significantly but we have done so while staying in the black! Further evidence was given by the recruiting of new donors and the recapturing of some of our lapsed donors. While all of this may seem purely financial it is not. The sign at the end of our beautiful meandering row of new palm trees says it all, “Welcome.” Simply put, we want Anchor House to be a welcoming home for our boys. Secondly, as a direct result of our facelift, we are also proud to report that there are a number of grant giving organizations that have taken interest in our transformation. One of the CEO’s of a large grant organization told me personally, “We want to get behind all of the changes at Anchor House and keep the momentum going.” Now, in addition to creating income in the last four months, we have also begun to cut costs. We will save about $25,000 through cost-cutting measures alone even though we are doubling the number of boys. But our most important achievement in these last few months is being more true to our calling than ever before. We are ministering and helping more boys than any point in Anchor House’s history. Because of our past success, we are also excited about our future. In the coming months we will build a “transition to success” program. We will partner with local businesses in the Polk County area to give our boys hope through gainful employment. Secondly, we have also begun to recruit students from local universities for internships in psychology to address some of the emotional needs of our boys. Finally, by the end of summer we hope to institute a new chaplaincy program which will provide individual attention to the spiritual needs of our boys. This program will take form in a new position that will have a person specifically designed to ask one question of each boy in our organization every single day: “how is your relationship with Jesus Christ?”. This may sound forward, but we believe it will be effective in bringing boys to Christ. We have experienced unprecedented success in our formative stages at Anchor House in a very short period of time. This bodes well for our anticipated expansion and future dreams. Therefore, we are bold to predict continued expansion and a resolute confidence in the future. Will you join with us? Will you pray about increasing your gifts to Anchor House as we embark upon this Christ-centered initiative? Together we are making a difference; with your help, tomorrow we will make even a greater difference. We are daring to dream. Come dream with us. Chief Dreamer in Residence, Dr. Joseph Davis Report from the Program Director Fredric Velez Current Residents: We currently have 20 boys in our care. Record High Census: Our census remains a record high as the lowest census for the month was 12 boys, which was the maximum census in prior years. Thanks to the recruitment of several pool and part time staff, we can now manage a much larger group of boys. Program Strength: Thanks to ongoing brain storming with Dr. Davis, The implementation of a clinical, chaplaincy and social service internships have been implemented with the partnership of Southeastern University. Interns will provide additional services to the program, reducing the cost of additional staff when beyond 18 boys. Interns will count as staff ratio by satisfying background checks and required training hours. Also, Independent Living Skills have increased with higher paying incentive campus work and weekly Life Skills groups. Our boys have also enjoyed the new YMCA membership, which has helped health awareness. We had a variety of guest speakers during chapel nights and normalcy privileges continue subject to their individual case plan. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their diligence and discernment in bringing Dr. Joe Davis on board as our new Executive Director. I look forward working under his leadership and our governing board for many years to come. We have a great team of staff and together we will bring out the best as a provider to our community and ministry to our boys. That gift was from a will that recognized Anchor House’s valuable contribution to the ministry of saving boys - one life at a time. The truth is, without that gift we would have been hard pressed to change our appearance and to upgrade our program as we have pictured in this report. This gift, through an estate gift, provided that much needed opportunity. Planned gifts have the ability to keep on giving - even after we have passed this earth to our heavenly home. Would you consider making Anchor House a part of your will or estate plan? We have specialists in this area that would love to help you create a legacy of caring for our boys. For those of you who have supported us for so long, wouldn’t it be wonderful to give a gift that continues your desire to support changing young men’s lives for Christ? If you would like to continue the giving you have started, or if you would like to become a new giver, contact us and let us help you to create a legacy too. I have no doubt that it pleases the Lord, who responded to those who helped others in need by saying, “For in as much as you did it to one of the least of one of these you have done it unto me.” Thanks for looking after these young children who truly are “the least of one of these” (Matt. 25:31-40).
