?-?-?-? The De-Vine Truth ?-?-?-?
Was “Champagne” really the first region in
France to make sparkling wine?
Most of the world credits the invention of sparkling wine to the Champagne region,
and to Dom Perignon. The legend, and possible real story, is far more interesting.
In 1531 the monks of St Hilaire (a few kilometres from Limoux ) who were cultivating
the golden grape Mauzac (Blanquette ) discovered naturally sparkling wine, the
Blanquette of Limoux, the Oldest Brut in the world. When the great Dom passed
through, he stole the idea, or so the residents of Limoux allege!

beauty has classy cedary oak aromas with hints of lemon and grapefruit, intense white peach and
nectarine flavors with some mineral and nut notes and quite strong, crisp, refreshing acidity on a

Lynn: Clocher De Saint Joseph – As a dyed-in-the-wool American oaky Chardonnay kind of
girl, I have seen the light with this delicious French new arrival. Fresh, flinty, full bodied and well
balanced, but still with a lingering hint of oak (my security blanket). If I can make the switch so
can you! $54.99
Christopher E: Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz 2004 – From one of Australia’s oldest
winemakers, this dense purple Shiraz is deep, full bodied, and powerful. With fine, supple tannins
