According to Jeff DeBoer, ACCESS offers
a broad spectrum of help to the people of
this community. So, it was an easy choice
for the Lithia Motors Senior VP and CFO
to lend support to the 2007 ACCESS Golf
Tournament. “It worked out really nice
to incorporate our giving into the Title
Sponsorship of the tournament. We are
pleased to be involved in this community
event,” he says.
DeBoer knows a lot about ACCESS, he
has been involved with the ACCESS Junior
Achievement Program since 1998 and
served on the ACCESS Board of Directors

for the Junior Achievement Program (JA).
Being a part of the JA program as an
instructor, DeBoer has first-hand experience
working with the kids, and he encourages
his employees to become involved as
well. As a local businessman, DeBoer
knows about hard work and he lauds
ACCESS JA manager, Mary Holbrook
for her dedication to the program. “At
Lithia we appreciate JA efforts to help
children get a practical understanding of
business; how it works and how they can
participate,” he says. “It teaches children
to have an entrepreneurial spirit and an
understanding of the business world.”
Lithia believes in the spirit of giving to the
community. For more than 20 years, a
portion of the proceeds from Lithia’s car
sales have gone into a fund called Priority
You. This fund supports activities in our
valley like the Junior Achievement program.

Message
from the
CEO
Having been at the helm of ACCESS for over one year now, it has
been my pleasure to associate with many wonderfully caring people
– some of them old friends, some new. I’ve had the opportunity to
work side-by-side with volunteers packing food boxes; participate
on committees advocating affordable housing; help seniors find the
information they need, and even learned new ways to save energy
at community outreach classes. While the services we provide here
at ACCESS are many, and the people we help varied, there is one
unifying concept to our care – partnership. It’s our core theme as we
fulfill our mission – in fact, it’s our vision. It’s how we envision the most
effective and efficient delivery of our services – through partnership
with like-minded organizations – committed to building a healthy
community. In this issue of ACCESS News, you’ll read about just a
few of our partnerships, and how we have worked together to meet
local needs. You’ll also hear a bit from some of our closest partners,
our employees, as they describe the behaviors with which we deliver
our services – our Guiding Principles. I hope you enjoy reading
this issue. After all, whether you’re a donor, community member or
volunteer, you’re an ACCESS partner and we truly appreciate the
interest you have in the work we do.

A HOME of Their Own
“ACCESS is a wonderful partner,”
according to Shirley Conrad, Senior
Community Service Employment
Program (SCSEP) Assistant at
Experience Works “they are
multi-facetted and that makes for
outstanding training.”
“I finally have a place of my own,”
Joy said beaming, “one the kids and I
can call home.” After years of constant
moving, living on assistance and
receiving food stamps, Joy decided
it was time to make some changes in
her life. So, she got a job and began
searching for ways to make it on her
own. Each day Joy drove to work,
she passed a house that she dreamed
of having as a permanent home for
her children. More determined to
become a self-sufficient homeowner,
Joy learned of ACCESS homebuyers
class, ABC’s of Homebuying (ABC’s)
and decided to attend.
The class sparked greater hope that
her dreams could become a reality.
Joy learned a lot, “ the class taught
me about insurance, financing,
mortgages, and lending,” she says.
“I was really encouraged by all the
help I was getting.”
Judy Robinson, a volunteer ABC’s
instructor and loan officer at People’s
Bank of Commerce, helped facilitate
a partnership between Oregon’s
Purchase Assistance Loan (PAL) and
the City of Medford’s First Time
Homebuyers Assistance Program
(administered by ACCESS). Joy was
able to qualify for a $25,000 down
payment turning her homeownership
dreams, into reality. “ACCESS made
it possible for me to buy the house of
our dreams,” Joy states “my children
and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
“I look at life differently now.” stated
Joy, “If you are willing to work hard
enough, you can get what you really
want. There are a lot of programs that
can help, don’t give up. If I can do it,
so can you.” People working together
can accomplish great things. Just ask
Joy and the boys.
Experience Works helps low-income
residents, age 55 and older to reenter the workforce after illness or life
circumstances force them out of work.
According to Dan Cunningham,
ACCESS COO “It’s a win-win
situation when you can partner with
an organization like Experience
Works,” who provides employees
that are eager to work and pays them
while training. ACCESS considers the
partnership with Experience Works a
successful one.
Take, for example, the ACCESS
program which loans medical
equipment to anyone in the
community with a need – for as long
as they need it. Philip Yates manages
this program “We’ve counted on
Experience Works to help us run this
program and it’s worked out great.”
Community member Valerie B. is very
grateful for the loan of a hospital bed.
“When your loved one’s are ill, it’s so
nice to get help – especially when it
alleviates some of the stress and cost.”

cooperation and responsibility between the members,
then it stands to reason that those members be grounded

their goals. At ACCESS, we call those fundamental

very real challenges they face, make our employees

With the shortage of affordable housing in this community, keeping the housing
available to low-income seniors became an immediate priority to ACCESS. The
partnership paid-off on November 3, 2006, when ACCESS received grant
approval for the acquisition – scheduled to close in late-spring 2007.
What does this mean for the tenants of Conifer Gardens? Because this
partnership allows the complex to maintain its HUD Section 8 contract, the
current residents of Conifer Gardens will not lose their homes. Without this
acquisition, the apartment complex would have been sold, converted to market
rate rents, and the low-income elderly residents displaced. A commitment to
helping local people extends beyond our walls – sometimes all the way to the
walls of seniors in need. The ACCESS Housing Department develops, builds and
manages many things – the most important of these is partnerships, which make
our community a better place.

When Shelter Resources, Inc. visited Medford in February 2005, looking for
a local housing services provider they had no idea they’d end up helping lowincome seniors keep their happy homes. Soon after discussions with the ACCESS
Housing team, led by manager, Cindy Dyer it became clear that a partnership
with ACCESS was the right way to go. Two years and many meetings later that
partnership has blossomed into a joint venture to purchase Conifer Gardens, an
existing 52-unit senior complex.

• Was established in 1991 to provide housing programs and services to low and
moderate income people.
• Provide homeownership counseling through Southern Oregon Housing
Resource Center (SOHRC) a local partnership designed as a one-stop shop to
help southern Oregon individuals and families with their housing needs.
• Has developed over 175 units of affordable housing since 1994.
• Manages 160 safe and affordable units in 15 sites throughout Jackson County.

Village...
When you work in social service,
it seems a simple task to explain
what you do: help people.
Describing how that happens,
can be a bit more challenging,
especially when you talk about
housing issues. At first glance,
we manage properties, build
quality complexes, develop grant
funding, advocate for affordable
housing, and educate people on
housing matters.
Indeed we perform all those
tasks, but also much more.
We’re all familiar with the
“takes a village” philosophy
– which highlights the impact
that outside influences have on
well-being. In Housing, we know
there are many aspects to a
living situation – especially when
there are families with kids.
Like the many children who live
at Barnett Townhomes where
families not only live affordably,
but find support through resident
services and a summer kids
camp. We respect individuals
need to be independent and
self-reliant at complexes like
Catalpa Shade where people
with disabilities find safe and
affordable places to call home.
At ACCESS Housing we
collaborate to create affordable
housing opportunities. We look
for partners to help us make
villages.

With the shortage of affordable housing in this community, keeping the housing
available to low-income seniors became an immediate priority to ACCESS. The
partnership paid-off on November 3, 2006, when ACCESS received grant
approval for the acquisition – scheduled to close in late-spring 2007.
What does this mean for the tenants of Conifer Gardens? Because this
partnership allows the complex to maintain its HUD Section 8 contract, the
current residents of Conifer Gardens will not lose their homes. Without this
acquisition, the apartment complex would have been sold, converted to market
rate rents, and the low-income elderly residents displaced. A commitment to
helping local people extends beyond our walls – sometimes all the way to the
walls of seniors in need. The ACCESS Housing Department develops, builds and
manages many things – the most important of these is partnerships, which make
our community a better place.

When Shelter Resources, Inc. visited Medford in February 2005, looking for
a local housing services provider they had no idea they’d end up helping lowincome seniors keep their happy homes. Soon after discussions with the ACCESS
Housing team, led by manager, Cindy Dyer it became clear that a partnership
with ACCESS was the right way to go. Two years and many meetings later that
partnership has blossomed into a joint venture to purchase Conifer Gardens, an
existing 52-unit senior complex.

• Was established in 1991 to provide housing programs and services to low and

• Has developed over 175 units of affordable housing since 1994.
• Manages 160 safe and affordable units in 15 sites throughout Jackson County.

Village...
When you work in social service,
it seems a simple task to explain
what you do: help people.
Describing how that happens,
can be a bit more challenging,
especially when you talk about
housing issues. At first glance,
we manage properties, build
quality complexes, develop grant
funding, advocate for affordable
housing, and educate people on
housing matters.
Indeed we perform all those
tasks, but also much more.
We’re all familiar with the
“takes a village” philosophy
– which highlights the impact
that outside influences have on
well-being. In Housing, we know
there are many aspects to a
living situation – especially when
there are families with kids.
Like the many children who live
at Barnett Townhomes where
families not only live affordably,
but find support through resident
services and a summer kids
camp. We respect individuals
need to be independent and
self-reliant at complexes like
Catalpa Shade where people
with disabilities find safe and
affordable places to call home.
At ACCESS Housing we
collaborate to create affordable
housing opportunities. We look
for partners to help us make
villages.

Message
from the
CEO
Having been at the helm of ACCESS for over one year now, it has
been my pleasure to associate with many wonderfully caring people
– some of them old friends, some new. I’ve had the opportunity to
work side-by-side with volunteers packing food boxes; participate
on committees advocating affordable housing; help seniors find the
information they need, and even learned new ways to save energy
at community outreach classes. While the services we provide here
at ACCESS are many, and the people we help varied, there is one
unifying concept to our care – partnership. It’s our core theme as we
fulfill our mission – in fact, it’s our vision. It’s how we envision the most
effective and efficient delivery of our services – through partnership
with like-minded organizations – committed to building a healthy
community. In this issue of ACCESS News, you’ll read about just a
few of our partnerships, and how we have worked together to meet
local needs. You’ll also hear a bit from some of our closest partners,
our employees, as they describe the behaviors with which we deliver
our services – our Guiding Principles. I hope you enjoy reading
this issue. After all, whether you’re a donor, community member or
volunteer, you’re an ACCESS partner and we truly appreciate the

A HOME of Their Own
“ACCESS is a wonderful partner,”
according to Shirley Conrad, Senior
Community Service Employment
Program (SCSEP) Assistant at
Experience Works “they are
multi-facetted and that makes for
outstanding training.”
“I finally have a place of my own,”
Joy said beaming, “one the kids and I
can call home.” After years of constant
moving, living on assistance and
receiving food stamps, Joy decided
it was time to make some changes in
her life. So, she got a job and began
searching for ways to make it on her
own. Each day Joy drove to work,
she passed a house that she dreamed
of having as a permanent home for
her children. More determined to
become a self-sufficient homeowner,
Joy learned of ACCESS homebuyers
class, ABC’s of Homebuying (ABC’s)
and decided to attend.
The class sparked greater hope that
her dreams could become a reality.
Joy learned a lot, “ the class taught
me about insurance, financing,
mortgages, and lending,” she says.
“I was really encouraged by all the
help I was getting.”
Judy Robinson, a volunteer ABC’s
instructor and loan officer at People’s
Bank of Commerce, helped facilitate
a partnership between Oregon’s
Purchase Assistance Loan (PAL) and
the City of Medford’s First Time
Homebuyers Assistance Program
(administered by ACCESS). Joy was
able to qualify for a $25,000 down
payment turning her homeownership
dreams, into reality. “ACCESS made
it possible for me to buy the house of
our dreams,” Joy states “my children
and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
“I look at life differently now.” stated
Joy, “If you are willing to work hard
enough, you can get what you really
want. There are a lot of programs that
can help, don’t give up. If I can do it,
so can you.” People working together
can accomplish great things. Just ask
Joy and the boys.
Experience Works helps low-income
residents, age 55 and older to reenter the workforce after illness or life
circumstances force them out of work.
According to Dan Cunningham,
ACCESS COO “It’s a win-win
situation when you can partner with
an organization like Experience
Works,” who provides employees
that are eager to work and pays them
while training. ACCESS considers the
partnership with Experience Works a
successful one.
Take, for example, the ACCESS
program which loans medical
equipment to anyone in the
community with a need – for as long
as they need it. Philip Yates manages
this program “We’ve counted on
Experience Works to help us run this
program and it’s worked out great.”
Community member Valerie B. is very
grateful for the loan of a hospital bed.
“When your loved one’s are ill, it’s so
nice to get help – especially when it
alleviates some of the stress and cost.”

ACCESS Golf Tournament, Lithia took the lead in 2007 as presenting sponsor.
According to Jeff DeBoer, ACCESS offers
a broad spectrum of help to the people of
this community. So, it was an easy choice
for the Lithia Motors Senior VP and CFO
to lend support to the 2007 ACCESS Golf
Tournament. “It worked out really nice
to incorporate our giving into the Title
Sponsorship of the tournament. We are
pleased to be involved in this community
event,” he says.
DeBoer knows a lot about ACCESS, he
has been involved with the ACCESS Junior
Achievement Program since 1998 and
served on the ACCESS Board of Directors

for two years. And, he has a real passion
for the Junior Achievement Program (JA).
Being a part of the JA program as an
instructor, DeBoer has first-hand experience
working with the kids, and he encourages
his employees to become involved as
well. As a local businessman, DeBoer
knows about hard work and he lauds
ACCESS JA manager, Mary Holbrook
for her dedication to the program. “At
Lithia we appreciate JA efforts to help
children get a practical understanding of
business; how it works and how they can
participate,” he says. “It teaches children
to have an entrepreneurial spirit and an
understanding of the business world.”
Lithia believes in the spirit of giving to the
community. For more than 20 years, a
portion of the proceeds from Lithia’s car
sales have gone into a fund called Priority
You. This fund supports activities in our
valley like the Junior Achievement program.
The 2007 ACCESS Golf Tournament and
Junior Achievement are just some of the
ways Lithia Motors partners to help.
