How to manage your migraines
Prevent heat-related illness
A MIGRAINE commonly causes an overwhelming, throbbing pain
on one side of the head. Other symptoms may include nausea,
vision problems, and a heightened sensitivity to sound and light.
While your doctor may prescribe medication to prevent or ease
migraine symptoms, the womenshealth.gov website says lifestyle
changes also may ward off these painful episodes. The site offers
these suggestions: Learn what triggers your migraines, and limit
these factors as much as possible. Go to bed and wake up at the
same time each day, regardless of day of the week. Don’t skip
meals, and choose healthy, nutritious foods. Exercise regularly.
Cut back on caffeine. Do your best to manage stress.
AS the weather heats up, illnesses ranging from heat
exhaustion to heatstroke become more common. The US
National Library of Medicine suggests how to help prevent heat-related medical emergencies: Wear lightweight,
loose-fitting clothing. If working outdoors, take frequent
breaks in the shade or indoors. When weather is particularly hot or humid, avoid heavy exercise or physical activity. Increase your fluid intake. Avoid becoming overheated, especially if you’re elderly, overweight or taking a
medication that affects your body’s heat regulation. Let
your car cool down before you get inside.

NYT SYNDICATE
Bean sprouts grown at Jonathan Sprouts.
A
S a horrified Europe
learned over the
past month, sprouts
are a high-risk food
for carrying harmful
bacteria like salmonella or the
toxic forms of E coli, according to
public health experts.
This year, at least two
American growers have recalled
sprouts contaminated with salmonella, and outbreaks of illness
from tainted sprouts have
occurred so often in the United
States that health investigators
have a special name for them:
Sproutbreaks.
Many sprout growers try to
kill pathogens by soaking their
seeds before germination in a
concentrated chlorine solution,
similar to but much stronger
than the disinfectant used in
swimming pools. While the
Food and Drug Administration
recommends a sanitising step
like the chlorine treatment, it
does not require it and some
growers skip it or use less stringent methods.
German authorities said that
they had conclusively identified
sprouts as the cause of the E coli
infections that have swept
Europe since early May, killing at
least 31 people and sickening
about 3,000, including more
than 700 with a severe kidney
complications.
Epidemiologists in the United
States said they were perplexed
that it took German authorities
so long to identify the culprit.
“I’m just staggered,” said
William E Keene, a senior epidemiologist of the Oregon
Public Health Division. “This is
basic outbreak investigation
101. This is on the high end of
suspect vehicles. You always
rule out raw milk, you always
rule out ground beef, you always
rule out sprouts. It just happens
in the beginning steps.”
After a series of outbreaks of
sprout-related illnesses in this
country and abroad in the
1990s, the FDA began encouraging sprout growers, known
as sprouters, to take steps to
sanitise their seeds and test
their products for pathogens
before sale.
The agency also warned the
public that uncooked sprouts
were a risky food, saying that
children, the elderly, pregnant
women and those with weak
immune systems should not eat
raw sprouts. The bacteria that
can contaminate sprouts can be
destroyed by cooking.
The FDA says there have been
at least 30 outbreaks of disease
associated with sprouts in this
country since 1996. The Centre
for Science in the Public
Interest, an advocacy group that
tracks food safety, said that its
review of government data
revealed 45 sprout-related outbreaks since 1990, including
2,500 illnesses. The group said
that it was aware of one death,
in a salmonella outbreak in
2003.
One of the most severe E coli
outbreaks ever recorded, in
Japan in 1996, was associated
with radish sprouts. About
10,000 people, many of them
children, fell ill.
Bob Sanderson, president of
Jonathan Sprouts in
Massachusetts and the head of
the
International
Sprout
Growers Association, said that it
would be wrong to draw conclusions about the safety of
American sprouts based on the
German outbreak, since growers
there may use different methods
than their counterparts here.
“Fresh food is the most nutritious food and inherently prone
to these problems,” Sanderson
said of sprouts and other vegetables. “That’s what makes it
fresh. It’s not sterile.”
Sanderson’s company recalled alfalfa
and some mixed
sprouts in April
after
routine
federal testing
According to
public health
experts, sprouts

bacteria like
salmonella or the

E coli
found salmonella in them.
Sanderson said that no illnesses
had been associated with his
products. After the recall, he
said, he improved his testing
methods.
Some sprout growers complain that the strong chlorine
mixture recommended by the
FDA to sanitise seed can be dangerous for workers to handle.
Sanderson said that he used a
lower concentration of chlorine
for that reason, but he feels that
the tests his company conducts
on sprouts as they are growing
are sufficient to catch any problems.
Sidney Chang, the owner of
Chang
Farm,
another
Massachusetts sprouter, recalled
some of his sprouts two years ago
after tests found listeria, another
dangerous bacteria. Since then,
he has built a new, more modern
facility and now sanitises his
sprouts with a hot-water process.
He also uses a less concentrated
chlorine wash.
Experts say they believe sprout
seeds can become contaminated
in the fields where they are
grown. Bacteria can hide inside
damaged seeds, where sanitising
steps may not always be able to
reach them.
Michelle Smith, an FDA senior
policy analyst, said that a single
bacterium surviving in a kilogram of seed can be enough to
contaminate a batch of sprouts
because the way they are grown
allows bacteria to spread.
Smith said that the FDA
expected to include new
rules for sprouts as it
wrote regulations as
part of a major food
safety law that went
into effect this
year.

Fashion as an art
Fashion
tips
FASHION is an art form and Andy Warhol said “Art – is what you can get away with!” The character and persona behind the clothing
totally impact whether or not you can ‘drop’ a look. Here are some fashion guidelines:
1. No white socks with anything other than sports clothing.
2. If you must wear sunglasses as an accessory, then in levels of low sun, opt for clearer glass so people can see your eyes when talking
with them.
4. Black is the “old man’s cool” – if you like it, make sure it’s broken up with simple flashes of colour – e.g – black shirt and trousers,
then a pair of tan shoes and belt.
Again, these are guidelines, calibrate with your environment, show good body language, look comfortable in what you are wearing and
be congruent with your personality, and others will accept whatever look.
Mannequins with personality

NYT SYNDICATE
O
NE size fits all, no
longer applies to
mannequins. With
retailers fighting for
customers in the
sluggish economic recovery, the
generic white, hairless, skinny
mannequin is being pushed aside
by provocative alternatives that
entice shoppers with muscles,
unusual poses, famous faces and
life like bodies.
“The customer shops from the
mannequin,” said Jenny Ming,
chief executive of the youth retailer Charlotte Russe, where poses
for new mannequins are drawn
from red-carpet celebrity pictures, and feature pierced ears,
articulated fingers for rings and
flexed feet for high heels. “The
number one reason our cus-
tomers come in is because they
see something they like.”
The Disney Stores chain has
added little-boy figurines that fly
from the ceiling and little-girl
ones that curtsy. Nike has made
its mannequins taller, and added
about 35 athletic poses. Armani
Exchange has ordered models
that will lie down to help shoppers imagine wearing lingerie. A
new accessories-only store by
Guess features glossy black mannequins in model-like poses on an
actual runway, while Ralph
Lauren’s new women’s store in
Manhattan commissioned mannequins with the face of the
model Yasmin Le Bon.
It is all part of a new appreciation for old-fashioned window
dressing. During the 1990s and
early 2000s, many stores cut
costs by hiring inexperienced
workers to outfit their
mannequins,
and
generic was best as the
dummies needed to
be dummy-proof.
But with shoppers
getting increasingly persnickety,
retailers
are
expecting their
store displays to
serve as “come
on in” advertising, with
the made-toorder mannequins
sending a
very specific message.
“They personify their brand
with their mannequin statements,
and they’re looking for something
a little more customised or
unique,” said Peter Huston, brand
president at Fusion Specialties, a
mannequin company in Colorado
whose sales, almost all of custom
mannequins, rose 48 percent last
year.
One of Fusion’s customers is
Athleta, the sportswear company
owned by Gap Inc. It commissioned mannequins based on a
catalog
model,
Danielle
Halverson, a track-and-field athlete training for the Olympics.
Fusion Specialties digitally
scanned Halverson in stationary
and action sequences. Then, over
about two weeks, seven sculptors

created clay renderings of the 3D digital scans
that
“handetched her from a
tiny pile of clay
down to the tiny
delineations of the
sinew in the muscle,”
said
Tess
Roering, vice president for marketing at
Athleta, which opened
its first physical stores
this year.
After making more prototypes, Fusion produced the
Dani-quin, as Athleta executives started calling the
mannequin, in five varia-
tions. The running pose, especially, looks realistic: she is in midstride, with only her left toes on
the ground. The Dani-quin, by the
way, is headless.
“We wanted to make sure that
our customers weren’t worrying
about the hair, or anything else,”
Roering said.
Michael Steward, executive vice
president of Rootstein USA,
which makes mannequins for
stores like Ralph Lauren, Chanel
and Neiman Marcus, said the
newfound appreciation for specialty mannequins came as many
retailers reassessed the market.
“A lot of people have decided
they have to specialise,” Steward
said. “Nothing sells the clothing
like a mannequin: it’s a subliminal message from the retailer, the
first thing people see in the window or in a department when they
go into the store.”
When mannequins first were
used, they were basically molded
dress forms to which clothing
makers pinned garments. By the
1920s, they had developed into
torsos with joints attached, and
slowly started to get wigs, makeup
and glass eyes. By the 1960s,
when some women stopped wearing bras, “we started to add
female features on mannequins,”
said Linda Scott, a professor
studying consumer culture at the
Said Business School at Oxford.
“That was a big shift,” she said.
But in the 1970s, as retail chains
expanded nationally and cost
pressures increased, mannequins
shifted back toward the generic.
“That’s when you saw mannequins that did not require
makeup, did not require wigs, or
so much attention to detail, to
reduce the costs,” said Huston,
the Fusion executive.
During the recession, companies curtailed spending wherever
they could, and mannequin sales
slowed. But after shedding
unprofitable brands or merchandise during the recession, the
retailers are focused on a specific
customer and a particular brand
position, and they want their windows to reflect that with custom
mannequins.
“Over the past two years, everyone has really had to reassess
their business and their client
base,” Steward said, “and the
market is so competitive that people are just focusing on what they
do well, and what they sell.”
Prices of custom mannequins
run from about $400 to $1,200 a
mannequin, not including the
$15,000 or more that places like
Fusion charge for development. A
mannequin makeover can cost a
national chain millions.

TOM Cruise seems to be getting better with age. He is seen shirtless in
his upcoming musical Rock of Ages with tattoos and bulging biceps. The
48-year-old superstar tweeted a sneak peek of himself as 1980s hard
rocker Stacee Jaxx from the movie, reports accesshollywood.com. He is
seen shirtless in the picture, and has sported long brown locks, multiple
tattoos, boots, and bulging biceps. Cruise’s wife Katie Holmes earlier said
she can’t wait for moviegoers to get an earful of her husband’s singing talent. “Tom is such an amazing performer. The voice is incredible,” she
said. “Rock of Ages” also features Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Catherine
Zeta-Jones and Russell Brand. It is slated to release June 1, 2012.
A REPRESENTATIVE of actress Emma Watson has rubbished reports that she is dating Johnny Simmons, her
co-star in The Perks of Being a Wallflower. “This is
complete fiction,” dailymail.co.uk quoted the representative as saying. Rumours of Watson dating Simmons
started off after they were photographed together in
Pennsylvania. The actress, who rose to fame through
the Harry Potter series, has been single since dating
One Night Only rocker George Craig last year.

However, Julia, who starred alongside
Tom in the 2007 hit, Charlie Wilson’s
War, says working with the beloved actor
on their latest project was a bit different
this time as Tom — who also co-wrote
and directed the film — made for a tough
boss when it came to costuming decisions!
“He was like, ‘Shorten it. Shorten it.
Shorten it. Hike it up,’” Julia told Access

As for working with Hollywood’s clas-

the deal — she raises your game,” Tom
told Billy. “She’s got the spirit of life that
brings everybody up and makes them do
their best work.
“And she’s also the teacher of our
dreams,” he added as Julia laughed. “I
mean, come on! Can you imagine?”
The Oscar-winning pair found time to
clown around on the set, and Julia
revealed Tom went to great lengths to
pull a prank on her, as she’d recently
taken up knitting as a hobby.

opens in theatres on July 1.
Role of therapy in

that she bas been seeing a therapist for the last 15 years and it
has made her more “fulfilled” and

“I’ve been doing it (having therapy)
for 15 years and I thank god. My life
would not be half as fulfilled as it is
without therapy,” contactmusic.com
quoted the 38-year-old as saying.
Diaz has been

the past and the psychology expert
has apparently helped her overcome
her brooding personality and adopt a
more positive outlook.
She also believes that her active
lifestyle made her a more focused
person.
“I take care of myself. I enjoy taking
care of myself. For me, the aesthetic
is not the by-product of it. Physically,
I am very in touch with my body. I
really love feeling strong, feeling
capable. I love that feeling in my
body,” she said.
“And so when I’m not in that
place, I don’t feel good. It also helps
keep my head clear and it helps me
stay focused on my work and my life
and I just use it as a way of maintaining a certain standard of life,”
she added.

Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi are back again
Big B happy with Balki’s Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap promos
AUDIENCES cannot really get over the comic timing of Sanjay Dutt as
Munnabhai and Arshad Warsi as his sidekick Circuit. Double Dhamaal,
presented by Reliance Entertainment, is bringing them back together.
Directed by Indra Kumar, the film is a sequel to the hit movie Dhamaal
and it starts from where the first film ended. Judging by the promos, the
film is full of hilarious moments and gags depicting the madness created
by the cast comprising Sanjay Dutt, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi,
Ashish Chowdhry and Jaaved Jaaferi, along with Mallika Sherawat and
Kangna Ranaut adding the glam quotient. As is seen in the trailers, there
are funny scenes in the film that feature Arshad in a hilarious sardar
getup of Ghanta Singh, playing a sidekick to Sanjay, who plays Kabir.
AD filmmaker-turned-director R Balki has voluntarily made four different promos for Amitabh Bachchan’s forthcoming film Bbuddah Hoga Tera Baap
(BHTB) and an overwhelmed Big B says they are the “smartest piece of advertising” that he has ever seen. Made under Amitabh’s AB Corp, the romantic
comedy about an angry old man, played by the megastar himself, has been
directed by Puri Jagannath. Releasing July 1, it also stars Hema Malini,
Raveena Tandon, Minissha Lamba, Sonu Sood, Prakash Raj and Charmi. “My
friend and sympathiser R Balki, who every now and then tests my capabilities
as an actor and who has been a great bouncing board, did one of the sweetest
things for me. On his own and voluntarily, he went ahead and made 4 promos
for the film BHTB, without telling anyone,” Amitabh said.

powerful connections. But what I
did have was a stable, loving home

And then, stardom happened.

Relationships with my childhood

In the past, when I experienced
personal betrayals and career setbacks, I somehow still felt in control. I felt I could overcome the
challenges even if it pained me to
go through them. But this was

to obstacles in our lives. We can be
cowards and shrink from problems
and pain or we can confront challenges with the determination to
move forward in a positive and better frame of mind. I am excited to
see where my life takes me, not only
in my professional career, but also
in my personal life.
For me, what’s most important
at this point in time is to be me...

Salman Khan’s
grand plans for
Chillar Party
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
ALMAN Khan (Sallu) had announced his plans to
hold a special screening of Chillar Party for underprivileged kids at the first look launch of the film.
However, due to a busy schedule things didn’t work out
as planned. First there wereReady promotions to be taken
care of and later Sallu got busy with the Celebrity Cricket
League. And that wasn’t all! Salman also had the schedule
of his forthcoming film Bodyguard waiting for him.
The Khan along with the crew is currently shooting for
the film in Patiala and Chandigarh, while back home in
Mumbai the Chillar Party team is gearing up for the big
release on July 8.
The film is the first under Sallu’s banner, Salman Khan
Being Human Productions, and therefore you can expect
the Khan to go out of his way to be there when the film
releases. We hear that the Bodyguard crew is working
round the clock so that the shoot is wrapped up by 7th July.
A source revealed, “Salman is supposed to fly back to
Mumbai on 7th morning. There are plans to hold a special
screening of the film the same evening.”
Buzz is that Salman may go theatre hopping when the
film hits screens on July 8. He did that when Ready
released and was thrilled to witness the audience’s
response to the film and sources say he might repeat the act
for Chillar Party.
