NE of four first-time novelists on the
Booker longlist, Stephen Kelman reflects
on how the killing of Damilola Taylor and
his own upbringing on an estate helped
inspire the idea behind Pigeon English.
Of all the debut novelists on the Booker longlist,
Stephen Kelman is perhaps the most high profile. The
writer made headlines last year when his manuscript for
Pigeon English sparked a bidding war between 12 leading publishers.
A BBC TV dramatisation is also in the pipeline.
The book tells the story of 11-year-old Harrison Opoku
who, with his mother and sister, is newly arrived from
Ghana on a rough London estate.
When a local boy is knifed to death and a police appeal
for witnesses draws only silence, Harri decides to start a
murder investigation of his own.
Kelman, who himself grew up on a Luton council
estate, drew inspiration from the real-life case of 10-yearold Damilola Taylor, who was stabbed and died on a
Peckham estate in 2000.
“I remember being very personally affected by that
story,” he says. “I felt a huge sense of loss and sadness
and anger, not just over Damilola’s case but all those that
have followed since.”
Although initially unsure that he was best qualified to
tell the story, Kelman decided to pursue his writing
seriously in 2005. He wrote several rejected screenplays
and a novel “now gathering dust at the back of a drawer”.
“I’m viewing that as the first pancake of the batch –
the one you get wrong,” Kelman observes wryly. ‘At that
point I was toying with the idea of giving up, but then
the idea for Pigeon English came along, and I was
inspired.
‘’I felt it was a great privilege to have been brought up
on an estate in an environment where there was such
diversity around. The immigrant story is part of Pigeon
English but not the main thread.
“I knew people at school who ended up in trouble
and in prison. The background tapestry of life on that
estate is something that seeped into me and I was able
to draw on that for the book.”
The character of Harrison, he says, just appeared “out
of thin air.” “He started chattering in my ear and
wouldn’t go away, and I set down his first thoughts on
paper and they seemed very authentic. That gave me
the confidence to go on.”
He also introduced the device of a talking pigeon as a
metaphor for immigration and integration. ‘’The pigeon
is ubiquitous,“ Kelman explains. “Some people view

them as pests and vermin and others accept them as a
benevolent part of daily life.
“The pigeon’s voice was also a useful intermediary in
getting across some of the more complex ideas.”
Born in Luton in 1976, Kelman describes himself as a
precocious reader at primary school.
“I remember being pulled out of lessons to go and read
for the headmistress. She used to give me copies of books
on the GCSE curriculum, so I was reading books for 15and 16-years-olds at the age of six or seven.”
Kelman got the news of the Booker longlist while he
was constructing a wardrobe in his new house.
“I got a call from my agent, and she said ‘put down
your hammer and sit down.’ There was a lot of excited
whooping, and then I entered a state of shock. The
wardrobe is still pending.”
As well as the wardrobe, Kelman’s second novel is also
work in progress. He has just completed a first draft.
“It’s completely different to Pigeon English It’s about
a friend of mine who’s an Indian journalist who breaks
world records in his spare time,” he explains.
“I’m very fortunate I’m in that position now where I
can write full-time. That’s something I’ve dreamed of
from a very young age.”
The shortlist of six authors will be announced on
September 6, with the winner of the 50,000-pound
annual prize named on October 18.

because his “dream-like” success left him detached from people. “I find
twitter so interesting. It’s so voyeuristic. And I feel so removed, from people, because of my job now. I feel like I get to see them in a way that I
don’t get to see them in real life,” contactmusic.com quoted him as saying.
“You know when you are in a dream, and everyone knows you in your
dream, and you always feel like everyone’s looking at you, and you’re you
but you’re not? It’s just been getting more and more dream-like,”he added.

Rocky surprises on the far side of the Moon
Science

THE broad, dark plains on the Moon’s near side, visible to the naked eye, have long been known to be volcanic deposits made of basaltic lava
flows. Now researchers report that in addition to these deposits, the Moon has unusual dome-shaped volcanic deposits of a different composition
on its far side. These rocks are rich with silica, and their origins are still unknown. The domes are half a mile to three miles across, and some have
steeply sloping sides. Bradley L Jolliff, a planetary scientist at Washington University in Saint Louis, and his colleagues report these findings in the
current issue of the journal Nature Geoscience. They used data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter to study the composition and elevation of
the domes. Launched in 2009, the spacecraft has a high-resolution camera to captures images of the lunar surface and an altimeter. The deposits
are unusual not only because of their composition and shape, but also because they were formed relatively recently, possibly only 800 million years
ago. The older basaltic deposits are at least one billion years old. “The fact that these are so young, so isolated and an odd composition makes this
a head-scratcher,” said Noah Petro, a lunar geologist at NASA who was not connected to the study. “The Moon is not supposed to have surprises
anymore — we’ve been to the Moon — yet we are still finding surprises all the time, and that’s amazing.”

Drought conditions in Texas, USA,
have led to the discovery of a piece of
the space shuttle Columbia, seen in a
picture taken by local police on
August 1. The shuttle broke apart during reentry in February 2003, scattering debris over east Texas and
Louisiana.
The recent dry spell caused low
water levels in Lake Nacogdoches,
exposing the 4-foot-wide (1.2-metrewide) sphere. NASA has confirmed
that the object is part of the shuttle,
identifying it as a fuel-storage tank.
LUNAR ‘GRIN’
The sliver of a crescent moon seems
to dip into Earth’s atmosphere in a
picture taken by NASA astronaut Ron
Garan from the International Space
Station on July 31. The station completes an orbit of Earth every 90 minutes, so astronauts can see the moon
set about 16 times a day.
SOLAR SEAWEED
Combining multiple wavelengths in
high resolution, a newly released picture from NASA’s Solar Dynamics
Observatory shows jets of material
called spicules shooting up from the
sun. These jets are known to sway like
seaweed in the sun’s atmosphere due to
magnetic field ripples called Alfven
waves.
By tracking the motions of the jets,
which loom roughly 32,000 miles
(51,500 kilometres) high, scientists
were able to measure the energy being
carried by the Alfven waves. In a
study published on July 28, the team
shows that the waves have enough
energy to power two mysterious solar
phenomena: The waves could be heating the corona to about 20 times hotter than the sun’s surface, and they
may be powering the solar wind,
which blasts particles off the sun at up
to 1.5 million miles (2.4 million kilometres) an hour.

then shedding its outer gas layers, leaving behind a stellar corpse known as a
white dwarf that’s surrounded by a
shell of debris.
Most known planetary nebulae are
spherical, elliptical, or bipolar (with
two symmetrical lobes). Astronomers
think that odder shapes arise when the
dead star has a binary companion _ as
does the white dwarf at the centre of
the Fine Ring.
‘FROSTY’ ASTEROID

Dawn spacecraft on July 24 shows a set
of three craters nicknamed the
Snowman on the northern hemisphere
of the asteroid Vesta. Dawn is the first
mission to orbit an object in the main
asteroid belt, between the orbits of
Mars and Jupiter.
Dawn settled into orbit around Vesta
_ the brightest asteroid in the main belt
_ on July 16. The craft will spend a year
studying Vesta before moving on to the
dwarf planet Ceres.

“Legends like Shammi Kapoor do not die...he lives, inside us,
around us. A journey such as his should be rejoiced, not
mourned. Of course, we’ll miss his physical presence terribly,
but his magic lives on within you and me...and I will make
sure my sons know the superstar their dad admired and loved
the most,” Hrithik said in a press statement on Monday.

The actor chats up in Mumbai.

Q. What’s your definition of being
sexy?
A. I think being sexy is a state of mind.
Especially for a woman, it’s the way you
feel; how confident you feel in your skin.
Once that confidence is established within
you, it’s done.
What men feel sexy about you might be
because you are confident and have a
strong personality. Being sexy is not about
skin, figure and all that…according to me
at least. May be I am wrong, men would
know better.
Do you think you are sexy?
I don’t think that’s something I can comment on. (Smiles)
Now-a-days most of the covers you
shoot are very sensuous. For example, the one you shot for Maxim.
What do you have to say about that?
I don’t know what to say. (Pauses). As
for the Maxim one, it was a very
confidently shot sensuous cover. It’s not

something outrageous…that’s not how I
want to pose myself. It was a good photoshoot and a well- turned out cover.
Unlike your contemporaries, we
hardly see you in revealing clothes
(except the bikini act in Badmaash
Company). Comment.
If experimenting is only about clothes,
then I will definitely not don a bikini for
any film. I don’t think clothes are such a
huge part of films; it’s not modelling
where clothes define the whole presentation.
In films, clothes are a part of characterbuilding and if I am playing certain character that needs to wear certain kinds of
garments, then I would.
I don’t like to believe that clothes decide
the fate of my films. I take my job very
seriously, that is, acting.
For me, anything that helps me build my
character, be it make up, hair, styling, I
would take that step and make sure that I
am portraying my character convincingly.
I have done a film like Rab Ne Bana Di
Jodi, and one Badmaash Company and
also a film like Band Baaja Baaraat. I don’t
take clothes as a medium of presenting
myself to people. It’s really the roles I try to
essay that matters.
So that’s the reason you refused to
wear a bikini in your upcoming film
Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (opposite
Ranveer Singh)?
As I said…it (wearing bikini) was not
important for my character in the film.
What do you think about the growing friendship between Ranveer
Singh and Sonakshi Sinha?
You should ask Ranveer Singh on his
friendship with Sonakshi Sinha. I can’t
comment on their friendship.
Are you single?
Absolutely. Right now I am not
interested in men. In fact, I am not
interested in finding one for
myself. I would want the guy to
come and find me.

I would like my man
to be very selfassured, very confident and he should
be able to handle

Khans - Salman and Shah Rukh - has
raised eyebrows, but the actress is unperturbed and argues there are no camps in
Bollywood.
Katrina is set to start shooting with
Salman Khan for Ek Tha Tiger next week
and her film with Shah Rukh, which is veteran director Yash Chopra’s untitled venture, is expected to go on floors in a few
months’ time.
“There is a problem, there is a misconception that the media has (that there is a
camp system). We all have different equations. Friendly, not so friendly, but everyone respects everyone’s individuality.
There are really no camps or something
like that,” Katrina said in an interview.

YRF and after that she signed their Mere
Brother Ki Dulhan and now the two films

Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, where she will
be seen puffing a bidi and strumming a
guitar in tattered jeans and a tee, have created ripples of excitement among her followers. And the actress explains her new
avatar as her endeavour to offer something
fresh in each film to avoid being boringly
predictable.
“Small things make the difference. You
are doing two films a year. Even if you are
showing something, which is a little different from the previous film, then the audience doesn’t get bored,” said the 27-yearold, who has been part of the industry for
eight years now.
“If I can do 15 percent better or add on
something with every film, then people
would not bear the impression that I am
not putting in my hard work,” she says.
The directorial debut of Ali Abbas Zafar,
Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is a romantic
comedy where Imran Khan and Pakistani
singer-turned-actor Ali Zafar play leads
opposite her.
The recent favourite of the YRF banner,
Katrina believes that Mere Brother Ki
Dulhan is the right film to collaborate with
Imran.
“It’s a romantic comedy, very exaggerated tongue-n-cheek kind. It’s a little bit larger than life, louder like my film Ajab Prem
Ki Ghazab Kahani. For Imran and me, it
was a very new space. We didn’t know each
other much and there had to be a fine-tuning, which eventually helped us to get into
the characters that we are playing.
“It was a nice first film for both of us to
do together,” said the actress, who has so
far made a successful on-screen ‘jodi’ with
Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan and Ranbir
Kapoor.
She revealed that the film has a close
resemblance to filmmaker Hrishikesh
Mukherjee’s 1975 classic comedy
Chupke Chupke that boasts of amazing
performances by Dharmendra, Amitabh
Bachchan, Sharmila Tagore, Asrani and
Om Prakash.
“It’s on the line of Dharamji’s Chupke
Chupke,” said Katrina.
To bring reality to her character, Katrina
learned to play guitar and her knowledge
about the instrument helped her portray
the character of a rock singer more convincingly in the film.
“I am learning the guitar. For an actor
it’s really easy to be a rock star. Wear
some boots, wear some jeans, wear kajal,
dishevel your hair, hold a guitar and
strum the strings. I can actually hold the
guitar right as I know how to play it,” said
Katrina.
Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is set to hit the
theatres on September 9.

HILARY Duff and her husband are expecting their first child. The 23-yearold singer and actress announced the news on Sunday on her website,
after noting that she and Mike Comrie, 30, are celebrating their one-year
wedding anniversary. “We also want to share the exciting news that baby
makes three,” Duff wrote on her site. “We are extremely happy and ready
to start this new chapter of our lives.” Days before making the news official, Duff told Us Weekly that “we both love kids and we’re really excited.
... It was a big deal for us because we had a year to be married.” Duff
appeared on the big screen earlier this year in the independent drama
Bloodworth. Her last album was a live set released in 2009. Canadianborn Comrie plays hockey for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“I’ve never done a music video
and I’ve always wanted to. The
format is dying!” Barrymore
explained of her decision try a
new creative outlet. “What I love
about music videos are the stories
in them.”
A fan of romance, action, and
tragic love stories, Barrymore
opted to draw on Romeo and
Juliet, West Side Story, The
Warriors and The Outsiders – all
while keeping actress Chloe
Moretz in mind for the lead. As
for Tyler Posey, Barrymore discovered the Teen Wolf star
along the way.
“I didn’t want to do a period
piece, per se. For this, I
thought, stick with the timeless,” she explained. “Take a
jean jacket, its ‘50s, ‘70s, ‘90s,
now… And I never met a graffiti I didn’t like! That’s how it all

What started out as a small 2minute project quickly escalated
to an 11-minute video as
Barrymore realised her ambitions. After asking MTV for permission to expand the project, the

“MTV Networks finally decided
they would let us make and air
the 11-minute version. That, for
me, is the greatest lesson in all of
this,” she recalled. “If you really
push yourself, you could create an
opportunity for yourself that
wouldn’t have happened otherwise. You have to earn it, and you
gotta go out there and make it
happen. How could I push the
limit? Went outside the traditional lines on this one, I feel really
lucky, just another side to me to
not sit with your dreams, and try
to make them manifest.”

Ellen DeGeneres Show in May.
“Basically my husband takes me
through sort of a meditation.
He’ll say, ‘You’re relaxed, and
you’re floating on clouds’ while
you’re going through labour
and your contractions. I’m just
concentrating on breathing
and staying relaxed because it’s
when you get tense that makes
the whole labour worse and more
painful. That’s all it is. It’s not like
a weird thing.”
So what’s next for the new mom?
She wants to lose the baby weight —
even if that means “starving [herself]!”
“I have a hard time with portion
control, so I have 1,200 calorie
meals delivered,” she told Lucky’s
September issue. “But I also work
out, so basically I’m starving. It
sucks. I drink a lot of water.”

for his ideal girl, someone very conservative. “I really like old-fashioned girls,” he said. Erich Gonzales, his leading lady in Katorse,

item during the run of the serial. But, Katorse – and Xian, too – are
a thing of the past for the actress who is now Maria la del Barrio.
“Erich and I became close but we just decided to focus on our

CTRESS Judy Ann Santos has
urged detractors on social networking sites to go easy on her.
She’s been swamped with negative comments about her
weight.
“I’ve been called siopao, monay and
aparador (cabinet),” said the actress,
admitting she got accustomed to this kind
of name-calling while growing up. “It
doesn’t bother me anymore. Let’s just
remember that there’s a story in every obesity case. Be careful because your remarks
may hurt instead of help the person.”
Judy Ann, who gave birth to her first
child in October last year, claimed to have
already lost 34 lb. She said there are really
no hard and fast rules when it comes to
losing weight. “It’s all about discipline. You
don’t need a lot of money to keep fit. You
can be sexy at any age,” said the wife of TV
host Ryan Agoncillo.
Aside from 10-month-old Lucho, Judy

“The chefs and I really make sure to
taste every dish the kids cook,” she said. “If
there’s a particular dish we like, we all eat
it. Since I’m on a diet, I adjust. I don’t eat
before going to the set. When I get home, I
just eat an apple or a cup of yogurt.”

recently. She gamely talked about her passion for cooking, her fears of being a firsttime host and of her relationship with husband Ryan.
What made you say yes to hosting?
This project is a dream come true. I’m a
fan of the original series. I’ve decided that
I want to try on new things, explore. I’ve
already proven that I could be a good
actor. A reality show is the perfect comeback vehicle for me. It’s stress-free. I just
play with the kids.
When Lauren (Dyogi, director/producer) first showed me the logo, I cried. I
said I’d do it. Lauren knows of my culinary background. Plus, I’m a new mother. He knows I can very well handle 60
kids.
How did you prepare for the
show?
I watched the original series. I also
asked tips from Ryan. He told me to “just
go with the flow, say what you want to
say.” He said not to worry if I commit mistakes, the production staff would call my
attention anyway. It’s good that the chefs
are there to guide me. It also helps that I’m
a natural with kids.
Are you aware of online reports
linking Ryan to different girls?
Yes, although we never talk about it at
home. I’m amazed at how well these peo-
ple can create stories. They should work as
series writers. I never doubted Ryan. I didn’t even ask him to explain about this. He’s
a very honest guy.
How did you react to the
rumoured romance between him
and Brazilian Daiana Menezes,
his Eat Bulaga cohost?
’No, its not true. They’re all part
of one big family. I’m a witness to this. Let’s not
give them a reason to
feel ill-at-ease with
each other.
