Irrfan Khan: Bollywood hero,
Hollywood’s everyman
KATHRYN SHATTUCK
NYT SYNDICATE
OLLYWOOD isn’t ready for an Indian
leading man,” Irrfan Khan declared
one evening last month in an overheated hotel room in Chelsea. He was
nursing a sore throat and fatigue after
a marathon post-production session for Ang Lee’s
film Life of Pi.
His acclaimed performance in the HBO series In
Treatment last season was being followed by supporting roles in two major American movies, Pi and
Marc Webb’s big-budget rebooting of The Amazing
Spider-Man, both of which were demanding frequent jaunts from his home in India to studios in
Taiwan, Canada and the United States.
“It will take time before Hollywood is free to
write a story about an Indian guy, unless it’s about
the dark side of India, like Slumdog Millionaire.”
Khan said. “They don’t want to see a normal India,”
he added. “That’s not the shock value they have to
have.”
The Great Khan, as his legions of fans call him,
says he no longer seeks fame or fortune. (He
already has both.) His current wish list might seem
quixotic coming from a man less accomplished: a
choice of roles, maybe even as an action hero. A
career that transcends race, religion and country. A
life with fewer of the material trappings he has
come to expect and more room for self-examination.
“Actually,” he replied, when asked what he is
searching for, “I am after God.”
In Paan Singh Tomar, his latest Hindi-language film, Khan portrays yet another of the
epic rebels who have established him as a huge
star in South Asia. Directed by Tigmanshu
Dhulia, a friend from his student days at the
National School of Drama, the movie is
based on the life of Paan Singh Tomar, a
long-forgotten midcentury champion steeplechase runner who is stung by the government’s betrayal of his impoverished village
and becomes a dacoit, or bandit.
“For his self-respect he picks up a gun,” Khan
said of the role, for which he trained for three gruelling months, learning to soar over obstacles. “The
irony is that this is a person who is running for the
country, and later it’s the country who is running
after him.”
The eldest son in an aristocratic Muslim family
from Jaipur, a city of pink palaces in the arid north,
Khan was a middling student whose conservative
parents frowned on his passion for cinema, insisting he pursue a professional degree.
He did for a time but eventually followed his
heart to drama school, hoping “to make a difference in my life,” he said. “I was trying to connect to
something that could make me feel more complete.”
Cast just after graduation in 1987 in Mira Nair’s
Salaam Bombay!, he wept when his part was cut.
Several television series later, on the verge of quitting, Khan was chosen as the lead in The Warrior,
Asif Kapadia’s sweeping 2001 adventure about the
enforcer of a feudal lord who is hunted through the
desert of Rajasthan and the snowy Himalayas after
repudiating his post. Two years later Maqbool,
Vishal Bhardwaj’s gangland updating of Macbeth,
transformed Khan into a heartthrob in the moment
he traced the actress Tabu’s parted lips through a
gauzy veil.
Did he long to be famous? “Yes,” he answered
without hesitation. “It’s a complicated thing.” He
considered for a moment. “Maybe to become
famous is to reassure yourself that whatever you’re
lacking inside, you’ve fulfiled that.
“Now I look to fame as a cage,” said Khan, who
lives on Aksa Beach in Mumbai with his wife, the
writer Sutapa Sikdar, and their two sons. “A crutch
you hold on to.”
While he usually cuts a dashing figure in Indian
films, Hollywood directors, impressed by his gift
for nuance, have mostly cast Khan in everyman
roles. He first became familiar to audiences in the
United States for The Namesake, Nair’s 2007 adaptation of the novel by Jhumpa Lahiri about a
Bengali couple (Khan and Tabu) that moves from
Kolkata to New York City.

“It will take time before
Hollywood is free to write
a story about an Indian
guy, unless it’s about the
dark side of India, like
Slumdog Millionaire”
Irrfan Khan in a scene from In Treatment.
It was Dan Futterman, an executive producer of
In Treatment, who brought Khan to American television in the critically acclaimed role of Sunil, a
grieving Bengali widower displaced in Brooklyn
with his son and American daughter-in-law, for
which the actor, now 45, was cosmetically aged
more than a decade.
Both men had appeared in Michael
Winterbottom’s 2007 film, A Mighty Heart,
with Khan playing the head of a Pakistani antiterrorism unit and Futterman the Wall Street
Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was
abducted and killed by terrorists.
“He has that ineffable thing that certain
great actors have of doing very little but
drawing the audience in,” Futterman said.
“They make choices that both surprise you
and are entirely relatable.”
Gabriel Byrne, the star of In Treatment, who
plays Sunil’s therapist, Dr Paul Weston, watched
Khan nail 30-minute scenes in just a couple of
takes.
“Irrfan is a brilliantly unpredictable actor, one of
the best I’ve ever worked with,” Byrne wrote in an
email. “He makes major character revelations with
the smallest of gestures.”
Even the act of rolling a cigarette, a tic Khan created for Sunil that became a vice in real life, captivated viewers.
“He makes such a meal out of that,” said the
director Marc Webb, who cast him in The Amazing
Spider-Man as Dr Ratha, a high-level executive at
Oscorp with what he called “villainistic overtones.”
The film, which stars Andrew Garfield and Emma
Stone, is scheduled to come out in July.
“The first time I saw him was The Namesake, and
I remember being utterly transfixed,” Webb said.
“There’s a scene when he sings to his wife after she
has locked herself in the bathroom. I hadn’t seen
anything like it.”
Lee, the director, said it was “an obvious nobrainer” to turn to Khan for Life of Pi, based on
Yann Martel’s fantasy novel about a shipwrecked
Indian boy adrift on a lifeboat in the Pacific with a
Bengal tiger. “I found that the book had a very
mature voice, not like a teenager’s,” Lee said of his
decision to have Khan play the adult Pi, who narrates the film, to be released in December. “So I figured I needed a pretty brilliant actor. I was like,
‘Who else?”’ Could Khan become the first Indian to
capture the lead in a mainstream American movie?
“Probably not as a romantic lead, because he’s
not white,” Lee said. “I think Asia is still a minority, still too small a group to be commercially valuable. But maybe he can break through for us. He’s
definitely rare and very special.”
Webb disagreed. “Women find him intensely
delectable, if that’s the criteria,” he said, citing
swoons on the Spider-Man set.
“People want to see great actors, they want to see
an interesting face, and he’s both,” Lee added. “But
usually it’s the actor bending toward the audience.
With Irrfan, the audience might have to bend
toward him a little bit.”

THE QUEEN
OF SELF-PORTRAIT’S
CAROL VOGEL
NYT SYNDICATE
INDY Sherman was
looking for inspiration at the Spence
Chapin Thrift Shop
in New York last
month when she
eyed a satin wedding dress. “It’s
Arnold Scaasi,” the saleswoman
said, as Sherman made a beeline
for the dress. Unzipping the back
the clerk showed off a row of labels,
one with the year it was made –
1992 – and another with the name
of the bride-to-be. “It has never
been worn,” she added. As the story
goes, when the gown was finished,
the bride decided she didn’t like it.
Sherman appeared skeptical. Is
this really what happened, or is the
story just the cover for a jilted
bride? One begged to know more.
That tantalising sense of mystery
and uneasiness are emotions viewers feel when they see one of
Sherman’s elliptical photographs.
Over the course of her remarkable
35-year career she has transformed herself into hundreds of
personas: the movie star, the valley
girl, the angry housewife, the frustrated socialite, the Renaissance
courtesan, the menacing clown,
even the Roman god Bacchus.
Some are closely cropped images;
in others she is set against a backdrop that, as Sherman describes it,
“are clues that tell a story.”
“None of the characters are me,”
she explained “They’re everything
but me. If it seems too close to me,
it’s rejected.”
On this afternoon Sherman, 58,
had bicycled from her apartment
to discuss her landmark retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art,
which opened recently and
includes more than 170 photographs. Wearing no makeup, with
leggings and sneakers and a
tweed hat that carefully concealed her crash helmet, she
looked inconspicuous, hardly the
celebrated artist whose fans
include Lady Gaga; Elton John,
who collects her work; and
Madonna, who sponsored a show
of Sherman’s “Untitled Film
Stills,” at the Museum of Modern
Art in 1997.
With its array of high-end used
clothing stores, this neighbourhood has proved a rich hunting
ground for Sherman. It was
here along Third Avenue
that she found the perfect
designer clothes for her
“society portraits,” a 2008
series of photographs
depicting Botoxed, overmade-up, often unhappy
women of a certain age.
Even as she prepares for
her retrospective – her first
in the United States in
nearly 14 years – she is
pushing herself to try
something new. Lately
she’s been thinking
about creating a family
portrait where she
would play every
member.
“She’s undoubtedly
one of the most influential
artists of our time,” said Eva
C
Respini, associate curator of photography at MoMA, who has spent
the last two years organising
Sherman’s retrospective. “She is
always addressing issues at the
heart of our visual culture. In this
world of celebrity makeovers, reality TV and YouTube, here is an
artist whose different modes of
representation seem truer now
than when they were made.”
Philippe Segalot, a Manhattan
dealer who bought his first work by
Sherman for his own collection in
the ‘80s, said: “I’ve always been
amazed how she could take what
seems like such a simple idea and
keep reinventing it. Cindy is one of
the few artists who has been consistently great throughout her
entire career. She was first noticed
in the ‘70s thanks to her “Untitled
Film Stills,” fictional portraits
inspired by movies and girlie
magazines. She and artists like
Barbara Kruger, Sherrie
Levine, Louise Lawler and
Laurie Simmons were
examining female archetypes and gender issues
in a way no one had
before. But it wasn’t until
1981, when she made her
“Centrefolds,” a series of
portraits inspired by
photographs
in
Playboy – but with the

and conveying a complicated range
of emotions – that her career really took off.
“That was when museums first
began to acquire her work,” said
Janelle Reiring, a co-founder of
Metro Pictures, the Chelsea
gallery. “It was a big turning point.”
Peter Schjeldahl, the art critic for
The New Yorker, who calls
Sherman “his favourite American
artist of the last 40 years,” remembers the day he walked into
Metro Pictures to see the
“Centerfolds.” He was so
bowled over, he ran out
to the nearest pay
phone. “I immediately
called the two publications I wrote for
only to discover
that they had
already
assigned
reviews,”
he recalled.
“I had to write
something that
day, and it turned
out to be a check.”
Schjeldahl bought a photograph for $900, paying in
monthly $100 installments.
Her “Untitled Film Stills,”
for which she purposely developed the film in hotter-thannormal chemicals to make
them look cracked, cheap and
grainy, like promotional giveaways, are now considered
landmarks of late-20th-cen-
tury art. But scores of other
images from her long career have
endured too, despite the proliferation of digital photography and
Photoshop.
“The contradictory and complex
readings of her work reinforces its
ongoing relevance to multiple
audiences,” Respini said. “More
than ever, identity is malleable and
fluid, and her photographs confirm
this.”
For Reiring the key to Sherman’s
success is that she “doesn’t tell you
what to think,” she said. “Her work
is so rich in meaning that everyone
can develop their own ideas.
Everyone sees something different.”
While she generally works in
series, she has steadfastly refused
to give titles to her photographs
because she wants viewers to draw
their own conclusions. Reiring said
it was either the gallery or critics or
the public who have named her
series.
Commercially she is often credited with taking photography out of
a ghetto and putting it on the same
firm fine-art footing as painting
and sculpture. In May 2011
Segalot, bidding on behalf of a
client, bought a 1981 image in
which she posed as a teenage girl.
For six months it was the most
expensive photograph sold at auction, bringing $3.9 million at
Christie’s.
Growing up in Huntington
Beach, on Long Island, where her
father worked as an engineer for
Grumman Aircraft, and her mother taught in public schools, she
recalls liking to dress up “probably
more than other kids.”
“There are pictures of me
dressed up as an old lady,”
Sherman said, sitting in her studio
one afternoon. “I was more interested in being different from other
little girls who would dress up as
princesses or fairies or a pretty
witch. I would be the ugly old witch
or the monster.”
She started painting in college at
the State University of Buffalo. “I
was good at copying things, but I
didn’t really have ideas of what I
wanted to do with painting,” she
said. “That was when I thought,
‘Why am I wasting my time elaborately copying things when I could
use a camera?”’
One of her first assignments in a
photography class was to confront
something that was hard for her. “I
took a series of myself naked in
front of the camera,” she said. “I
did a couple of these series, and
that was when I started using
myself, but at the same time, not as
an art practice, just for therapy or
something. I would transform my
face with makeup into various
characters just to pass the time.”
On and off for more than a
decade, starting in 1985, she
removed herself from her pictures.
She has said she created many
tougher images during difficult
periods in her life, like when she
was angry about several male
artists whose careers seemed to
take off more easily than hers, or
when she was in the middle of a
divorce from the French video
artist Michel Auder, ending their
15-year marriage.
None of these images have been
as commercially successful as her
“Untitled Film Stills,” or the “history portraits.” The history series
(1989-90) were shots of her
dressed as characters from old
masters like Titian, Holbein and
Caravaggio.
She works alone in her commodious floor-through studio that
houses her costumes, props and
equipment. Women’s wigs dot
window sills, and there are shelves
of wax doll’s heads and body parts
from medical mannequins. It is
here that she becomes the subject,
the photographer, the director, the
makeup artist and the costume
stylist.
“Whenever I tried to hire people
or use friends or family, even if I
paid them, I felt like I had to entertain them,” she said. “When I’m
working alone, I can push myself.
And I don’t complain.”
In recent years technology has
changed her work. Before digital
cameras “I would do the character,
set everything up, take a roll of
film, get out of character, take the
makeup off and go to the lab and
wait a few hours for the film to be
developed,” she said. “Then I’d
look at the film and realise something didn’t work out. And I’d have
to redo everything myself. Now I
can continue working and tweak it
as I’m going.”
As visitors get off the escalator at
MoMA, they will be enveloped in
8-foot-tall images of Sherman
standing amid a bucolic black-andwhite setting that she shot in
Central Park. “It’s like walking into
Cindyland,” Respini said on a
recent afternoon as she was overseeing workers applying the contact paper to the museum’s walls.
There Sherman emerges in yet
another mind-boggling array of
characters: a circus juggler; a
woman clad in a body suit with
pointy bosoms, nipples and pubic
hair; an aging woman in a long red
dress. “You think you may know
them,” Respini said. “But in fact
the more you look at them, the
more complex and darker they
seem. The same could be said of
Cindy. How can such a mild-mannered, nice woman have such a
wicked imagination. that keeps
inventing these fantastical characters over and over again?”

NYT SYNDICATE
ERRY Agosta,
who has spent
30 years in the
Bay Area as a
general contractor
and
developer, said there’s a hard
truth in his line of work: “You
never get a chance for a doover. Every site commands a
different design, so you’re
always doing things for the
first time.”
Not so with the home that
Agosta, 57, and his wife, Lisa
Moresco, 53, built five years
ago on a steep street in the Noe
Valley neighborhood. After
purchasing a modest house for
$850,000just down the hill
from where they had been living, the couple expanded the
structure and replaced the
stucco facade with red cedar
and a wall of glass windows, a
renovation that cost $230 a
square foot.
To compensate for the sloping lot, the couple’s architect,
Owen Kennerly, came up with
a design that moved the living
area to the roof of the existing
house, with an additional level
built on top of that as a master
suite, while the ground floor
contained bedrooms for the
couple’s three children. The
result was a modern home
with striking curb appeal and
sweeping views of the city and
bay.
But in 2009, a fire broke out
in the downstairs sauna while
the family was on vacation in
Spain.
“We got a text that said,
‘Everything’s OK, but you
should call,”’ Moresco said.
“We lost 90 to 95 percent of
everything.”
And so, with the superstructure intact, the couple
embarked on a do-over.
On a recent rainy day, sitting
in their light-filled, sparsely
furnished living area, Agosta
and Moresco admitted that

“We lost 90 to
95 percent of
everything.”
And so, with
the
superstructure
intact, the
couple
embarked on a
do-over
version 2.0 looks much like
the first version. An open plan
allows for entertaining and
even the occasional flamenco
performance (Moresco is on
the board of a dance company), while two centre skylights
solve the problem of dark middle rooms, a common one in
this city of narrow lots.
The
subtle
interplay
between cold modern architecture touchstones and warm
organic materials has also
been preserved. For instance,
a living-room fireplace cover is
made of woven wire cloth, but
it’s been oxidised to give it the
rusty patina of a Richard Serra
sculpture. In the kitchen,
stainless-steel appliances are
softened by wood cabinets and
a built-in wood banquette.
“There was a concern about
the house having a comfort
level, a warmth, a coziness and
yet having the convenience
and flow of an open floor
plan,” Kennerly said. “That led
to this palette.”
But while the couple said
they believed they mostly got it
right the first time, after living
in the house, Agosta said,
“There were things that we
realised could have been done
better.”
One of the first things to be
changed was the Sheetrock on
the walls, which tended to
show every blemish in sun-
ble. “We decided to go back
to the classics,” Agosta said.
Perhaps the biggest change
was to the floor plan. When
the fire blew through the
house, it burned with the
greatest intensity in the cou-
ple’s third-floor bedroom.
“Exactly where our bed
was,” Moresco said.
“The aluminum windows
were in puddles,” Agosta
added.
The couple have since
moved their bedroom to the
ground floor; their old master
suite is now a combination
office, media space and guest
room.
“It just felt like a sign,”
Moresco said. “You know
what, we’re not putting the bed
back there. Let’s do something
different.” The fire was
“unimaginable,” as she put it.
But, Agosta said, searching for
a silver lining, it also provided
“an opportunity to fine-tune.”

Don’t compare Indian awards with Oscar,
says Abhishek Bachchan

Preity shoots in minus 21 degrees C
PREITY Zinta has wrapped up the first schedule of her debut
production Ishq In Paris and says it was a pleasure to shoot
with the French and Indian crew in temperatures as low as
minus 21 degrees Celsius. “I’d like to thank the French crew
for all their effort and hard work and all the wonderful fans
who came to the shoot and were so co-operative! Big thank
you to the Indian crew for shooting in -21 degrees and never
complaining. Its amazing how we don’t realise our own
toughness sometimes!,” Preity posted on her Twitter page.
Ishq In Paris is an Indo-French production, directed by
Prem Soni.
BOLLYWOOD superstar Abhishek Bachchan feels it is futile for Indian
media to compare Indian film award functions to a ceremony like
Oscars because in India most such functions are organised by the
media houses themselves. “Interesting to read a lot of the media comparing the Oscars to our Indian awards. Most seem to think that we
need to improve, raise our standards. Wait a minute. Aren’t most of
our awards run and held by media houses,” Abhishek wrote on Twitter.
“Take the initiative, we shall follow,” he added, taking a dig at mediapersons, who hailed the Oscar ceremony on Sunday.

Striptease
speaks out
truth: Riya Sen
IANS
NDECENT proposals are the norm in the Hindi
film industry, claims author Neeta Shah in her new
book Bollywood Striptease and actress Riya Sen
seconds this, saying she too has had such experiences.
“This book has everything and I think what she has
written is true. My journey has been very different
because I am not
so ambitious. But
yes, I have been
offered, I have
gone through a lot
of experiences,
directly and indirectly,” the 31year-old
told
reporters at the Riya
launch of the Sen
book.
“It depends on
individual to individual, it’s what
you choose. I have
made my own
decisions and I
am happy with
them,” she added.
Riya, who herself got into trouble after allegedly
being part of an
MMS chain, says
worrying about rumours is not her style.
“I have read my own interviews where people have
quoted me when I have not even spoken to that journalist. I don’t sit and cry or howl or say I am running
away from India or the world. I still get my work, my
money, I still have the same lifestyle, my friends. So it
(rumours) doesn’t affect me,” said Riya, who was last
seen in Benny and Babloo.
Daughter of yesteryears actress Moon Moon Sen,
Riya’s journey in Bollywood began with Style in 2001.
She has featured in films like Dil Vil Pyar Vyar,
Jhankaar Beats and Shaadi No 1 and is currently
working in Krrish 2, in which she plays Vivek Oberoi’s
girlfriend.

OLLYWOOD star Vidya
Balan wants to improve her
vocabulary, on the one hand,
to express her feelings
towards the success of The
Dirty Picture. On the other, she is looking forward to a break and says post
that she will do some “dirty dancing”.
After working non-stop for more than
two years, she now wants to take a break.
“I am close to saying yes to a film which
will not start for another three months.
So I really think I need that break
because for the past two-and-a-halfyears, I have been busy with my films.
So now I do need that time off to soak
everything in. Then I will probably
do some dirty dancing,” the 33-yearold talented actor told IANS.
An unofficial biopic of southern
sex siren Silk Smitha, The Dirty
Picture saw Vidya shedding all
inhibitions to get under the skin
of the character and said: “I have
become unapologetic about
being myself. Probably others
think that I don’t breathe the

“I was hoping the film would

the film would do so well. I feel
blessed and I am looking for
new words for blessed, humbled and overwhelmed.”

soon be seen stepping out of the sex icon
image by playing a pregnant woman in
director Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani, a thriller
that will show what all her character goes
through when she flies down to Kolkata to
find her missing husband.
“I can’t do the same thing again and
again. When I am flooded with roles, then
why will I not take that advantage? My
character in the film is a vulnerable woman
who is searching for her husband, but she
has not lost her sense of humour. She is a
woman of today.”
Vidya has been extremely choosy with
scripts, but clarifies that it doesn’t mean she
is narrowing down her options.
“The proposition of success has been
huge, thankfully. But even after Paa, Ishqiya
and No One Killed Jessica, people said what
next? Are your options narrowing down? I
don’t think about these things. If God has
brought me so far, he will take me further.
“I am here to act. I am not saying I will do
only solo heroine projects. I want to do different genres of films,” she said.
Ghosh was shouldering the burden of
two flops - Aladin and Home Delivery when he approached Vidya, but she was
not sceptical about the director and took
the plunge. “When Balki came to me with
Paa, I was already working on Kismat
Konnection and Heyy Babyy. And when
Sujoy came to me, my films were doing
well. But he is an intelligent man
he is one of the most intelligent
men I have met. Two of his
films didn’t work, but he has
put things together this time
around. I am hoping it will
work out. But I think the
intention is right,” she said.
A kidnapping that goes

NICOLAS RAPOLD
NYT SYNDICATE
HE Hindi film Tere Naal Love
Ho Gaya follows the age-old
celluloid dictum that nothing
makes romance bloom like a little kidnapping. Even a fake one will do.
When a striving rickshaw driver, Viren
(Ritesh Deshmukh), drunkenly crashes
the wedding of his greedy boss’s daughter, Mini (Genelia D’Souza), it’s a financial grievance that’s on his addled mind,
not abduction. But since — surprise —
Mini has zero interest in the dull, opportunistic groom, she’s more than eager to
run off with Viren and generously shows
him how to point a gun at her head.
So begins a fugitive comedy, directed
by Mandeep Kumar, that runs out of gas
long before its on-the-lam stars. When
the pair flee to the picturesque mountains of north India, role reversal is
milked for laughs, as the meek, wellmeaning Viren follows the lead of his
bossy, entitled “victim,” who merrily

Romance happens, and soaring songs
(and one wedding roof-raiser) are sung
and danced, but the milquetoast-spitfire
routine is replaced none too soon by the
film’s second-act twist on meeting the parents when the two end up at the old
fortress where Viren’s estranged father
(Om Puri), a professional kidnapper, lives.

Bollywood plot standards, and oddly
lacking much spark between the (recently married) co-stars, Tere Naal Love Ho

Viren’s family, whose
habits jibe with Mini’s
ethics-lite sense of initiative. Their existence also conveniently reveals that
Viren’s
dullness
(conveyed all too
convincingly
by
Ritesh) is a virtue:
in this family, rebellion for a black sheep means doing the
right thing.
That’s not the newest trick in the
playbook either, and with a spirited
adventurer like Genelia D’Souza’s
Mini, it’s a movie that would have
done better to dispense with Viren’s
innocence and simply follow the path
of mischief.

Brangelina duo to star together after
seven years
JENNIFER Aniston is reportedly planning to get married to beau Justin
Theroux by the end of this year. Aniston has apparently told friends that
Theroux is “the one” for her and even joked that she has issued him with
an ultimatum to marry her by the end of the year. She also said that
their new dog Sophie is a “test run” for having children. “I’ll be married
by the end of the year. We’re constantly laughing,” Aniston told a friend.
“Justin and I argue over who takes the dog out and who disciplines her,
but that’s about it. Things are fabulous. I’m happy. If he’s not got down
on one knee, or we’re not married, by the end of the year, it’s over!” she
added. A friend said, “Jennifer and Justin have discussed their long-term
future and both agreed that they love the idea of settling down.
HOLLYWOOD couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who were
last seen sharing screen space in the 2005 movie Mr and Mrs
Smith, are in talks to work together again. According to showbizspy.com, Jolie revealed this while walking the red carpet of
the Oscar ceremony on Sunday. “We’re talking about it. We
have an idea,” said the 36-year-old. However, the actress said
it will not be a romantic comedy. “We don’t know how funny
we are. And you never know what you want to see an actual
couple do. Sometimes it’s better if they’re not a couple.”

Hathaway’s take
on life: Don’t
take things
seriously
IANS
CTRESS Anne Hathaway says that she has
been through several embarrassing situations
but her mom taught her to take life with a
pinch of humour.
“My mother, Kate McCauley, taught me to be always
understanding of other people - and to have a sense of
humour. You need to hold on to that sense of humour,”
thesun.co.uk quoted the actress saying.
Anne, 29, who got engaged last November to
actor Adam Shulman, will be seen with him in
the latest Batman film, The Dark Knight
Rises, releasing this summer.
“If you don’t look back and have a
laugh at things like that, you really are
taking yourself and life too seriously.
Mom will also never discuss or criticise
my performances, which is exactly the
way it should be. There are plenty of
others who can do that,” she said.
She thanks her mom for never
being judgmental and added,
“Lindsay Lohan and I have more in
common than people think. We’ve
all done things we shouldn’t. It
is just that I did stuff at college when nobody knew
about it, so I’m not a saint.
I wasted time doing selfdestructive things.”
“I try to keep my
personal life low-key,
particularly
after
what happened to
me. As I say, I do
need to keep a sense
of humour!
She agrees that as
a teenager she often
got things out of
perspective but her
mom told her
“Maybe you are taking things a little bit
too seriously?”
