10 biggest book-to-screen
adaptations for Hollywood
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
LWAYS looking for good stories, Hollywood has often
turned to literature to make
some of its most successful
films. While the industry has a
reputation for ruining countless classic
novels, several filmmakers have managed
to achieve greatness with their big screen
adaptations. Among a few of the most
notable in recent years are the Harry
Potter franchise, Forrest Gump and of
course, Lord of the Rings.
A
SCHINDLER’S LIST
Based on Thomas Keneally’s novel,
Schindler’s Ark, Steven Spielberg’s powerful film about the Holocaust earned 7
Academy Awards including Best Picture
and Best Director. Despite the grim subject
matter, the film was a box office hit with
more than $321 million worldwide.
JURASSIC PARK
In 1993, Steven Spielberg brought
Michael Crichton’s sci-fi novel to the big
screen, where it revolutionised visual
effects and grossed $914 million worldwide. It spawned two sequels, with a longrumoured fourth film in the works.
ALICE IN WONDERLAND
In 2010, Johnny Depp put on his
Mad Hatter hat to bring the beloved
Lewis Carroll character to life in
director Tim Burton’s opulent
live action version of the story.
Newcomer Mia Wasikowska
held the title role. The film was
a huge success for Disney,
grossing more than a billion
dollars worldwide.
Hollywood has a
reputation for ruining
countless classic novels but
several filmmakers have managed
to achieve greatness with their big
screen adaptations of novels. Here
are a few of the most notable
achievements in recent
years...
FORREST GUMP
Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 adaptation of Winston Groom’s novel
nabbed six Academy Awards and
has earned a lifetime gross of $677.3
million worldwide. Tom Hanks stars
in the Paramount film, which opened to
$24.4 million domestically in its opening
weekend.
THE HELP
Based on Kathryn Stockett’s 2009
novel, The Help surprised with an A+
CinemaScore and rave reviews. The film
opened on August 10 and has thus far
raked in $173.3 million worldwide.
Stockett’s childhood friend, Tate Taylor,
directed the film for DreamWorks.
Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas
Howard, Octavia Spencer and Jessica
Chastain star in the film.
LORD OF THE RINGS
Fans of the original fantasy series by
JRR Tolkien were not disappointed
with its movie counterpart. 2003’s Lord
of the Rings: Return of the King took
home an astonishing 11 Academy
Awards — a record tied only by Titanic
and Ben-Hur. The third and final
installment proved to be the most
successful of the series which, in
total, brought in more than $2.9
billion.
THE ENGLISH PATIENT
Set during World War II,
the romantic drama The
English Patient (1996) is
based on the novel by Michael
Ondaatje.
Anthony
Minghella’s film won 9
Academy Awards, and has
earned a worldwide gross of
$231.9 million. Ralph Fiennes
and Juliette Binoche star in the
movie.
THE BLIND SIDE
Sandra Bullock won her first Oscar
for her portrayal of the real-life Leigh
Anne Tuohy. Based on the 2006 football book by Michael Lewis, John Lee
Hancock’s adaptation focused on the
true story of Michael Oher, who was
essentially homeless as a young man
before becoming a football star, and
eventually, an offensive tackle for the
NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. The film has
raked in more than $309 million worldwide.
THE TWILIGHT SAGA
Based on the supernatural romance
novels by Stephenie Meyer, The Twilight
Saga became a cultural phenomenon,
launching actors Robert Pattinson,
Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner into
super-stardom. The four book series was
turned into five films, with the final
installment broken into two releases.
With only four released to date, The
Twilight Saga has grossed over $1.8 billion globally. While popular on the teen
award circuit, taking home hardware
from the MTV Movie Awards, Teen
Choice Awards, People’s Choice Awards,
and in some instances, the dreaded
Razzie Awards, the films have failed to
generate any Oscar buzz or critical
acclaim.
HARRY POTTER
The Harry Potter series, based on JK
Rowling’s highly regarded books, translated to the screen with great success on
both sides of the pond. The eighth and
final film in the beloved franchise hit
theatres in the summer of 2011, bringing
the combined worldwide gross to $7.7
billion. Actors Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert
Grint, Emma Watson and Tom Felton
grew up with the series, as did millions
of fans all over the world.

Pitbull all set to learn Hindi
Rhythm
guide
DESI is the way to be for international singing sensation Armando Christian Perez aka Pitbull who is visiting India this December. The popular singer
has taken a new fetish - to learn the local language Hindi. He even wants to collaborate with Bollywood filmmakers as he is fond of acting and performing, apart from singing. In fact, it is reported that the organisers, who are bringing him to India, have already been approached by a few production houses. They want Pitbull to make a special appearance in their films. According to sources, as part of his India tour, Pitbull and his team are
planning a visit to iconic places which also includes temples and monumental places. The organisers have requested for a special ceremony to be
conducted in every city upon arrival of Pitbull at his hotel. The rapper will be given a taste of Punjabi and South Indian food by celebrity chefs during
his stay in India. Sources add that Pitbull is so taken in by Indian culture that he plans to don the colours of the Indian flag during one of his concerts
with peacock feathers imprinted on his suit. The Pitbull concert will be held on December 2 at Quantam, Noida; December 3 at MMRDA Grounds,
Mumbai and on December 4 at Amanora Grounds, Pune.

Rihanna homes in on a ‘home’
with Talk That Talk
JON CARAMANICA| BEN RATLIFF | NATE CHINEN
NYT SYNDICATE
ISTINCTIONLESSNESS
has become something of
a calling card and a
weapon for Rihanna, the
most consistent pop
star of the last five years. Last month
she became the fastest solo artist in
history to have had 20 Top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, slower only than the Beatles. And she has
pumped out these hits with little
regard for style or mood — breezy
dance tracks rub up against poignant,
gothically ruptured rock-soul ballads.
Her voice is, for the most part, certifiably blank, which is to say it belongs
everywhere.
But it hasn’t always had a home. Talk
That Talk (Island Def Jam), her sixth
album, is maybe the first to suggest the place that’s been hiding in plain sight all along,
placing Rihanna squarely
at the centre of the pop
genre best suited for a
singer of her fundamental
evanescence:
dance
music, which
conveniently
is the mode
du jour of
contemporary R&B and
pop.
Rihanna’s
version of this
sound dates to the
club music of the
early 1990s, an era in
which she would have
shone. The best songs on
this lively and often great
album sound synth-perfect
for that time. We Found Love
almost criminally recalls the
swinging Crystal Waters singles, with triumphant percussion somewhere between
church and seventh-inning
stretch. Where Have You
Been is even better, with
hard, chilly synths, snares
from the poppier side of
house music, and Rihanna
moving in and out of a
curled Siouxsie Sioux
tone. “I been everywhere, man/looking
for someone/someone
who can please me,” she
sings. “Are you hiding from
me yeah/somewhere in the
crowd?”
Talk That Talk is the
blithest Rihanna album,
which is saying a lot. It has
none of the dark, wounded
subtext of her more recent
albums, almost no sign of
scarring left by her tumultuous and abusive relationship with Chris
Brown that seemed to
hover over her more
recent work.It also signals the extent to which
the work of polyglot
post-soul, post-dance
artists like Santigold
and MIA have been
absorbed into the
mainstream. It’s
here on songs like
Red Lipstick (on
the deluxe edition)
and
Cockiness

Rihanna
Talk That Talk is maybe
the first to suggest the place

along, placing Rihanna squarely at the
center of the pop genre best suited for a
singer of her fundamental evanescence:
dance music, which conveniently is
the mode du jour of contemporary
R&B and pop
Rihanna is channelling Neneh Cherry,
all pseudo-melodic sass.
Cockiness (Love It) is a particular triumph, its beat by the producer
Shondrae a booming industrial jumble,
and Rihanna easing out come-ons as if
she were lapping up milk. That’s followed immediately by Birthday Cake,
80 seconds of squelchy bounce and consumption metaphors.
Like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s recent
Watch the Throne, this album has major
parts recorded in hotel rooms, a testament to the globalisation and rootlessness of pop, to the outlandish prices of
conventional studio time, to the desire
to create in an environment of luxury, a
liminal space with no repercussions. But
that can make for an ungrounded overall experience. When Rihanna veers
from the fleet stuff, she’s less certain.
Watch n’ Learn, which has flickers of
Beyoncé’s recent Party, has good mouth
feel but no taste.
And on songs like Farewell, the most
bombastic one here, it’s tough to tell if
the words have feeling, because
Rihanna’s voice doesn’t. When she
wants to convey emotion, as on Drunk
on Love, she essentially shouts the lyrics
— “I wear my heart on my
sleeve!/Always let love take the lead!/I
may be a little naive!” — but staggers
around the melody, a victim of trying to
feel too hard.

check your watch and look for the exits.
And for the most part it’s stasis, brand
maintenance, with Blige’s loud, rough
voice; some reassuring mid-’90s sounds
and attitudes; and no particular centre.
For years Blige’s narrative has been
MARY J BLIGE
My life 2 The Journey
Continues Act 1:
This record begins
with an echo of My
Life, from 1994,
the album often
thought to be
Mary J Blige’s
best, the one that
outlined her as
R&B’s gravest diva.
On the first track of My
Life, Sean Combs, her producer, calls Blige and yells
into her answering machine.
When she picks up, he jolts her
into ambition: he challenges her,
warns her against haters, tells her to
be on time for the session in the morning. She complies, sounding sleepy but
combative.
On the first track of this one, she calls
Combs. He is not the producer of this
record or anything on it. But he has a
stake in its legacy, so she asks him if he
minds her recording a follow-up. “It’s
not a competitor,” she explains. “It’s a
sequel, and an extension of how far
we’ve come.” Combs murmurs something about honesty and life being a
marathon, and plugs the older record.
As a conversation, even a staged one, it’s
so sleepy, so meaningless.
The new album’s title makes you
Mary J Blige
about slowly moving from discomfort to
comfort; she teaches both women and
men how not to be negative clichés. That
works for individual songs, and for concerts: the notion of overcoming and persevering can give her performances
momentum. But this is an album’s worth
of perseverance, the shop talk of the soul,
and as the title indicates, she’s in the
middle of things. It’s not the same as
being on top of them.
Unhappiness still motivates her best
work. The record’s best songs are all
dark in one way or another — fragile,
baleful, speechy. Don’t nobody really
know me, she sings in the upbeat, hiphop/gospel 25/8, produced by Eric
Hudson and Blige, and that’s why the
song’s narrator loves the man she’s
singing to: because she believes nobody
else really cares about her, and because
she doesn’t really trust anyone else.
Conversely, in No Condition, produced by Danja, with strings
over old drum-machine
beats, Blige tells someone
that their relationship is
over, with finality and
without blame: “I’m in no
condition to love you.”
And Love a Woman— a
duet with Beyoncé, who is
not a competitor, but if
she were, she would have
won — offers a varied list
of suggestions, for the
totally feckless beginner,
about how to satisfy
wives and girlfriends.
There’s a lot of undistinguished in-between:
songs with beats about
specific relationships
that don’t work, with
shallow cameos by
Drake, Nas and Rick
Ross; and big, slow
ballads, moving into
country and soft-pop,
about love of a more
generalised
and
equally impossible
kind. As an artist and
a kind of therapist
— for herself and
for her audience —
Blige knows her
patterns well. The
problem is that she’s
having trouble seeing
past them.

So many girls in movie business
wows Madhuri
Sameera Reddy cribs about crazy
working hours
MADHURI Dixit is excited to see the Hindi film industry getting more professional than it used to be during the days
when she was at the pinnacle of her career. “In those days
barring the choreographer, hairstylist and the actress no
other woman would be seen on the sets. But today, from
assistant directors to other departments, so many girls are in
the movie business which makes me proud and comfortable. I am sure actresses don’t feel the need to be accompanied by their moms any more” said Madhuri with a smile.
FOR those who thought working in Bollywood is a cakewalk Sameera Reddy has something else to say. “The film
industry works any day of the year crazy hours and
Sundays don’t count! And you guys think we have it easy,”
Sameera posted on Twitter. Sameera is balancing her
work, both in south and Bollywood. Her last release was
Prabhu Deva’s Vedi in Tamil, and is currently doing the
lead role and an item number in Tezz for which she has
reportedly lost seven kilos.

Now a Bollywood Walk of Fame
RADHIKA BHIRANI

T’S been a jogger’s delight, a hangout spot
and a lovers’ rendezvous point for years.
Now the picturesque Bandra Bandstand in
entertainment capital Mumbai will turn
into the Bollywood Walk of Fame. Sure
enough, the street will be adorned with the hand
imprints of popular living legends like Amitabh
Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan - a la
Hollywood.
Housing the flats and bungalow's of actors like
Shah Rukh, Salman Khan, John Abraham,
Shabana Azmi and Rekha, the area attracts a lot
of tourists and local people.
With the addition of celebrity tiles at
Bandstand Promenade - an idea conceptualised
by UTV Stars, the “official channel of
Bollywood” - the number of visitors is only
expected to increase.
Taking a leaf out of Los Angeles’ Hollywood
Walk of Fame at the world-famous Hollywood
Boulevard, officials at the channel were earlier
in talks for a Hall of Fame, but ultimately zeroed
in on a ‘Walk’.
I
“We have been working on this project for six
months. Since we consider ourselves the official
Bollywood channel, we wanted to do something
for the actors who have contributed so much to
the industry over the years,” Nikhil Gandhi,
business head at UTV Stars, told IANS over
phone from Mumbai.
“So we zeroed in on this Bollywood Walk of
Fame in Bandra Bandstand, where the name and
handprints of actors will be placed tile by tile.”
The Hollywood Walk of Fame stretches over
two kilometres and has brass stars and the
names of showbiz stars engraved in tiles. A specific area also has hand and foot imprints of
actors, musicians and technicians in clay tiles.
But the desi street will be “different”.
“We wanted it to be different. We won’t do
stars, we will have brass imprints for our
stars, who will be required to give their
hand imprints in a clay cast, which will be
processed in brass. And when it is ready to
be placed on the street, we shall invite the
star over to place it at the right place,” said
Gandhi.
The channel hopes to get as many as 60
tiles placed within the first year of its launch,
scheduled for early January 2012.
With this, the Bandra Bandstand is expected
to wear a new look!
“We had other options, but the Bandra
Bandstand is a central location and looks wonderful with the sea by the side,” he said.
“We haven’t earmarked the stretch of the Walk
of Fame yet, but we wanted to choose a place
which is convenient for the public, for visitors,
and a place which would add to the beautification of the city as well as add tourism to the city,
which is the hub of Bollywood.”
Permission has been received from the
Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the
Bandra Residents’ Association (BRA) for the
project, according to Gandhi.
UTV Stars hopes to launch the project with a
“megastar” but are tightlipped about the name
of the celebrity.
For starters, only actors — mostly “deserving,
glamourous and big stars who have contributed
a lot to Indian cinema” — will
find their hand imprints
on the Bollywood
Walk of Fame.
However, space
will also be created
for deceased legends who continue
to live in the hearts
of fans.
Gandhi is confident
the Walk will add
value to the “city of
dreams”.

Balancing work and family
not easy for Raveena
IANS
CTRESS Raveena Tandon,
who is making a full-fledged
comeback with Gin Liya
Aasman, finds it very difficult to maintain her personal and professional life so she considers her own
limitations while selecting a role.
“It feels nice to be working again. It
keeps me alert, but don’t know if I’m
ready to give into long hours. It’s very
difficult to maintain a balance
between work and family. I realise I
have my limitations. I want to be
home more...luckily it’s my choice,
and I can choose,” the 37-year-old
posted on micro-blogging site
Twitter.
Raveena got married to film distributor Anil Thadani in 2004 and they
have two children - six-year-old
daughter Rasha, and three-year-old
son Ranbir.

The actress is currently in Pune for
the shoot of Gin Liya Aasman.
“I am moping about because I’m
going to be in Pune for 20 days, I love
the city, but I can’t stay without my
kids for more then 3 days. Luckily,
they’ll be joining me on weekends. I
am missing them already and I’ve just
arrived yesterday. I have now decided
not to do films with long outdoor
shoots,” she added.
Directed by Rishi Deshpande and
produced by Mudassar Aziz and Anil
Bohra, Gin Liya Aasman is the story
of a six-year-old boy whose father, a
naval officer, has been missing since a
plane crash.
Raveena, who is playing the boy’s
mother, is touched by the story line
and said, “It’s a very sweet story. I was
deeply moved when I read it, a very
touching story about a little boy and
his mother.”
The actress was last seen in

Secret of Shilpa’s fitness:
Shilpa
Shetty
No junk food at all
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
HILPA Shetty stepped into
Bollywood
through
Baazigar in 1993, almost
18 years back. Unlike most
who struggle with keeping their
weight in check, Shilpa continues
to flaunt her hourglass figure ever
since her debut in films.
Even today, Shilpa Shetty can
be a top contender for the best
body (female) award in Bollywood.
So how does she manage it, considering actresses half her age find it
difficult to do so!
Shilpa Shetty spoke to reporters
and told them what goes into looking perfect and healthy.
“My goal is to achieve personal
happiness. At the same time, discipline is extremely important. If
S
you have to be fit especially if you
are a working woman who happens
to be in movie business, you cannot be fat. More than looking good,
it’s about being healthy. All it takes
is 20 minutes a day to burn out the
excess calories. Good diet which
means no junk food at all. No
McDonalds french fries and burgers.
Also it’s not about not eating
anything you like. You can always
cut down the intake. Eat half a pastry a day instead of the whole
piece. I indulge in pastries every
Sunday. I have pizza too but the tip
is to have it in moderation. I can
never diet. I also see to it that I
dress according to my body type.
For the past 20 years, my weight
hasn’t fluctuated much. Its
between 57-60 kgs which I think is
great.

Gomez set to become big sister
Kim Kardashian breaks down on reality show
SINGER Selena Gomez is very excited because
her mother is expecting a baby. The 19-yearold star is thrilled that she will finally be a big
sister as her mom Mandy and stepfather Brian
Teefey are expecting their first child together,
reports contactmusic.com. “Momma and Brian
are finally letting me share the news... My
mommy is carrying my baby brother or sister
:) I’m the happiest girl in the world!,” she posted on Twitter.
KIM Kardashian broke down on her own TV show while discussing her
failed marriage to Kris Humphries. The reality TV star split from the basketball player last month and filed for divorce just 72 days after their lavish
televised wedding. The 31-year-old actress has kept her feelings largely out
of the spotlight since their split, but in a new episode of family reality TV
show Kourtney and Kim Take New York, she was seen sobbing as she
talked about her marriage. Kim cried uncontrollably while she spoke to her
sister Kourtney. “He fell in love with me and I fell in love with him and now
my feelings have changed ... And I failed at this. You don’t think I feel
bad?” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted the socialite as saying.

A melodrama

HE history of the world is
the history of the billions
of brutalities perpetrated
on millions of people. The
modern home of democracy and the land of many champions
of liberty, the US is also one of the
world’s most brutal, obvious from its
treatment of coloured people.
The Help takes on the premise of
the way coloured people were treated
in the ‘60s to weave a poignant story
of love, courage and justice.
A young writer (Emma Stone) in
the land of racial segregation in
Jackson, Mississippi, in the 1960s,
secretly interviews coloured women
working as housemaids in white people’s houses. In an extremely racist
environment where it is outlawed to
even talk of justice for the coloured,
they threaten the unquiet and
unjust peace of their small
town, while risking their own
lives.
If you are a sensitive person, get ready to weep buckets
as writer Kathryn Stockett
(novel) along with scriptwriter
and director Tate Taylor presents not only the big injustices
that the coloured community
faced, but small, insignificant
humiliations
they
lived
through for centuries.
There are many films that
have tackled racial injustice
most notably To Kill A
Mockingbird and Mississippi
Burning. But most of these
films have focused on physical
violence that moves communities.
The Help is a film projecting
the structural violence that one
race perpetrates on another. The
film shoots itself up amidst the pantheons of world’s greatest films ever
made on the subject.
It speaks out to people suffering
injustice, to stand up and take their
destinies in their own hands, to not
accept their misfortune but to find
courage to fight it. There are no
preachy statements, no lecture
against racism. Instead, in the true
spirit of cinema, it shows it, and
lets you, the viewer, decide for
yourself.
Besides an almost perfect
screenplay and direction, what
gives the film its concentrated
strength is the near perfect casting. You have some Oscar worthy
performances from Viola Davis,
Octavia Spencer and Bryce Dallas
Howard. While the first two tug at
The Help takes on the
premise of the way

justice
your heart as oppressed housemaids, it is Bryce’s portrayal of a
heartless woman that gives visual
representation to a racial hatred
that has lasted centuries.
Melodrama is usually, and justly,
criticised in cinema. But if effectively
played, it can help a film soar beyond
the obvious.
The refined melodrama of The
Help becomes a lesson to filmmakers
globally who desperately try to trigger the tear ducts of their viewers.
Indeed, melodrama has never looked
better in cinema before.
The movie, a Kathryn Stockett’s
debut novel, was rejected by 60 literary agents but after finally being published in 2009, has so far sold five
million copies and has been published in 35 countries.
The film has so far raked in over
$200 million. This talks oodles
about the power of a good story told
well and people’s sense of justice
that is triggered by this beautiful
story. Today as racism raises its ugly
head in different shapes and guises;
the film becomes a topical and
poignant statement against it. In a
scene from the film, a maid tells a
young girl “You is kind, you is smart,
you is important,” that indeed is the
message of The Help to everyone
who is facing oppression anywhere
in the world.

Marvin stays with GMA despite new manager
Judy Ann ready for another baby
WITH Annabel Regalado of Star Records as his new manager, rumours
surfaced that Marvin Agustin would soon be leaving GMA-7 to return to
his former network ABS-CBN.However, the 32-year-old actor denied such
talk. “I have no plans to move to another network. I can honestly tell you
that I’m still happy here at GMA,” clarified the actor. Marvin is currently
doing Iglot for GMA. It is bowing out soon to give way to Christmasthemed shows. Marvin is busy promoting the horror film, The Road opening on November 30. Marvin returns to a genre which gave him an acting award (he won best actor from Metro Manila Film Festival for his role
in Kutob). In The Road, Marvin plays a wife-killer (his wife is played by
Carmina Villaroel, whom he kills because she was abusing their son).
NOW that she is back in shape and is bent on losing more pounds, TV host-actress Judy Ann Santos
admits that having another baby after Lucho will
be “a blessing.” “I don’t have any problem with
that (another pregnancy). It is fine with me. I will
turn 34 on my birthday,” she told Push.com.ph in
an interview. Juday’s baby with her husband Ryan
Agoncillo, just turned one on October 7. This
Christmas will be Lucho’s second Christmas with
the family that includes his Ate (big sister) Yohann,
