Conquering some of the most
difficult climbs – at age 10

ITH a concentrated
squint, Ashima Shiraishi
silently sized up her first
rock of the day, a menacing slab of jagged beige
boulder 6 meters high, scuffed by white
chalk left behind from bigger, older, more
experienced climbers.
A black crash pad as thick as a mattress
was placed on the ground, and without a
rope or harness for protection, Ashima
shrugged off her purple jacket, hoisted herself onto the boulder and began to scramble up, her calf muscles bulging gently as
she grabbed one nearly invisible ledge of
rock after another. With a final stretch, she
reached the top, her glossy black ponytail
disappearing first, then one limb at a time,
until she was out of sight.
A tiny voice floated over the top of the
boulder. “How do you get down?” she said.
Ashima had just begun a two-week
climbing expedition this spring at Hueco
Tanks, a state park that is a mecca for bouldering enthusiasts, 350 hectares of rock
masses surrounded by endless desert and
sky 50 kilometres northeast of El Paso.
Three days after she arrived, she stunned
the bouldering world by climbing Crown of
Aragorn, a exceedingly difficult route that
requires climbers to contort their bodies
and hang practically upside down by their
fingers as they navigate a rock that juts out
from the ground at a 45-degree angle.
On the scale of V0 to V16 that governs
bouldering, Crown of Aragorn is a V13, a
level that only a few female climbers had
reached before.
None was 10 years old, as she was.
Ashima, a petite girl with pale skin, a
toothy smile and a thick fringe of bangs cut
in a perfect line across her forehead, is not
only the best climber of her age in the
United States, or maybe anywhere, but her
accomplishments have already placed her
among the elites in the sport.

In 2008, when she was only 7, she began
sending problems – bouldering lingo for
ascending routes – that some adult
climbers could not handle.
On a trip to Hueco in 2010, she climbed
a V10 called Power of Silence. The next
year, she ascended a V11/12 called
Chablanke.

Youth National Championship in Colorado
Springs in March, she easily came in first
place, all 1.2 meters 12 centimetres and 28
kilograms of her.
Before finishing fifth grade, Ashima, who
recently turned 11, is redefining what physical tools are required to be an elite climber
and showing how a child can hold her own
against professional climbers who are
adults.
This summer, she will accompany a
group of American climbers for an
expedition in South Africa, where she
will be the only child climber in the
bunch.
“She’s this adorable little girl who
climbs hard and cries when she doesn’t send,” said Andrew Tower, the editor in chief of Urban Climber magazine. “Her climbing IQ is so high, you
show her how to do something and she
soaks it up really quickly. She understands
innately how to move.”
It did not take a pro to see that there was
something unusual going on at the time
Ashima started climbing in 2007, when
she was 6.
Her parents, Tsuya and Hisatoshi
Shiraishi, had immigrated from Japan in
1978 and settled in a loft in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. When Ashima, their
only child, was 2, they began taking her to
Central Park in search of amusement.
One afternoon when Ashima was in
kindergarten, they wandered over to Rat
Rock, a boulder 4.5 meters high and 12
meters wide at the south end of the park
that is a favourite spot for amateur
climbers.
Ashima joined the other climbers and
began to scurry up the rock without help,
so focused on her climbing that she begged
to stay at Rat Rock through the dinner
hour. Finally, when it became so dark that
Ashima could not see the rock anymore,
they went home.
The Shiraishis were mystified. “We didn’t even know that climbing was a sport,”
her father, Hisatoshi Shiraishi, said later.
But he knew that his little girl was good.
The Shiraishis went to Rat Rock almost
daily, visits that stretched through the
would climb nearly every day after school,
with Poppo as her coach.
He did not know about rock climbing,
but he knew how to move. He had been
trained as a dancer, studying Butoh, a form
developed in Japan a half-century ago that
is influenced by German Expressionism. In
New York, he performed in a group called
Poppo and the Go-Go Boys, whose
“strangely beautiful” routines sometimes
ended with dances on and around toilet
bowls, a finale that was “more than a
prank,” an admiring review in The New
York Times said in 1993.
In those days, Poppo the modern
dancer and choreographer wore his hair
in a triple Mohawk. Now he has toned it
down a bit, but on a recent Saturday
afternoon at the gym in New Rochelle,
New York, where Ashima takes a private weekly lesson and participates
in the occasional climbing competition, Poppo stood out among the
suburban parents in khakis and J
Crew sweaters.
His hair, dyed canary yellow, was
buzzed short on the sides and spiked
on top. He wore designer eyeglasses
and a light gray T-shirt decorated with
neat rows of Japanese lettering. (They
read, “Are you stupid?”)
Poppo, who has given up Butoh but still
moves with the lithe ease of a dancer,
watched Ashima intensely as she moved
steadily up the wall.
When Ashima climbs, he said, he feels he
is climbing with her.
“With dance, there is space all around
you,” he said, spreading his arms wide and
fluttering his fingers in a circle. “I teach her
to think about the space around her when
she is climbing.”
As climbing has gained popularity, more
children have tried it. One of the top children in the sport, a frequent competitor of
Ashima’s, is Brooke Raboutou, the daughter of the former climbing champions
Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou and Didier
Raboutou.

summer and into the fall. Ashima kept
improving, climbing higher and faster,
often attracting a crowd.
By November, it was becoming too cold
to climb outside, and the Shiraishis started
to worry. What were they going to do with
her all winter?
Some bystanders in the park encouraged
Hisatoshi Shiraishi, known as Poppo, to
take Ashima to a proper climbing gym.
“They said, ‘You’re special,”’ Ashima
recalled, her voice trailing off with a shade
of embarrassment. “They told me that I
should be climbing at a gym, all the time.”

Physically, children and teenagers may
even have some advantages over adults:
their small hands and feet allow them to
use holds that adults cannot. Some experts
have suggested that they bounce back
more quickly from falls and injuries than
adults do.
Ashima has not escaped injuries. Her
knees are marked with scrapes and scabs.
On her forehead is a faint yellow bruise, the
size of a quarter, suffered during a climb at
her gym in Brooklyn.
“I was trying to do a really big move and
I hit my head,” she said.
Getting hurt does not seem to bother her.
“I don’t think about it,” she said. “I know
how to fall.”
But the mental requirements of climbing
are too much for many children to handle.
Up close, bouldering is slow, even ponderous, a sport that allows for long stretches of hanging out, talking with fellow
climbers, sitting around and contemplating holds and pinches. A group of climbers
might stay at one chunk of rock for hours,
staring at it and plotting the smartest way
up.
None of that seems to bore Ashima.
“When she’s climbing, she’s not a child,”
Poppo said. “Her mentality is like a professional climber.” Obe Carrion, her private
coach, calls it “the stone face” that she
wears during competitions.
Kynan Waggoner, director of operations
for USA Climbing, the national governing
body for the sport of competition climbing,
said Ashima competed as if she were five
years older than she is, mentally and physically. The children who excel at climbing,
he added, tend to have an ability to concentrate that is beyond their years.
“The best young climbers climb like
shrunken adults – they don’t move like
children,” Waggoner said. “Their coordination is like a fully formed adult. Their balance is better; their agility is better. They
just look like little men or little women.
Everything is precise; everything is calculated. That’s how Ashima climbs.”

Delicate, buttery flounder
from another era

NTIL the culinary revolution
began in the
1970s,
there
were two types
of fine-dining restaurants in
San Francisco. One served a
kind of cuisine called
Continental.
Vaguely
European and intentionally
fancy, the food arrived from
the kitchen beneath polished silver domes, accompanied by rich sauces in silver sauce boats, and occasionally by tableside theatrics performed by waiters
in red dinner jackets.
The other, a bit more
boisterous and bustling,
was the traditional bistrolike San Francisco fish
house, and there were lots
of them, some predating the
1906 earthquake. The
menus in these places didn’t
vary much, and all boasted
fresh local seafood. There
were, of course, the obligatory shrimp cocktail and
shrimp Louie, oysters on
the half-shell and little pots
of
steamed
clams.
Perpetually available was a
so-called captain’s platter,
which contained an assortment of deep-fried fish and
shellfish.
In season, diners ordered
Dungeness crab and Pacific
salmon and halibut steaks.
But any fish palace worth its
sea salt also offered the
three types of sole native to
the region.
Rex were served bone-in,
but the prized, meaty, delicate petrale sole was always
a boneless fillet. The best
version of it was called Dore
(pronounced doh-RAY),
dipped in an eggy batter
and tossed on a well-oiled
hot griddle, then floated in a
buttery sauce.
For the most part, those
establishments have disappeared, but a few stalwarts
remain and are popular
with locals and tourists.
When I lived on the West
Coast, an occasional meal in
one of them provided a
glimpse of a previous era,
with decor to match:
mahogany fixtures, brass
rails, dark velvet curtains
and etched mirrors, along
with no-nonsense plates
and cutlery. There was
never a young waiter on the
staff. Eating there was like
stepping into a fabled past.
I confess a certain weakness still for that savoury
egg-cloaked sole. Here in
New York the other day, my
favourite fishmonger had
small flounder fillets, so I
determined to prepare them
in that nearly prehistoric
manner. The technique is
U
simple: Dust the fish in
flour and submerge it in a
mixture of beaten egg and
milk. When the fillets are
pan-fried, they emerge
moist, delicate and golden.
Although the fish then really needs only butter and
lemon, my slight variation
was to add a handful of finely minced mild green spring
garlic to the sauce. It is so
abundant at the farmers’
market right now, I seem to
be putting a little in just
about everything.
Egg batter pan-fried
flounder with green
garlic
Time: About 20 minutes
Ingredients:
1 1/2 pounds boneless
flounder or sole fillets,
preferably four 6-ounce
pieces
Salt and pepper
2 large eggs
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup all-purpose flour for
dredging
Mild olive oil or vegetable
oil for frying
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/3 cup finely chopped
green garlic, both white part
and tender green stalks
Juice of 1/2 lemon
3 tablespoons chopped flatleaf parsley
Lemon wedges.
Method:
1. Season the fish fillets
with salt and pepper. Make
the egg batter by whisking
together the eggs and milk
in a shallow bowl, along
with a pinch of salt.
2. Put the flour on a plate.
Coat each fillet lightly on
both sides, then submerge
the fish in the egg batter.
(This can be done up to 30
minutes ahead.)
3. Pour about 1/4-inch oil
in a wide skillet over medium-high heat. When the oil
looks wavy, lift the fish
from the egg batter one
piece at a time, allowing
excess batter to drip off.
(Discard remaining batter.)
Carefully lay each fillet in
the pan and let gently fry
until golden, about two
minutes per side. Remove
and blot briefly on paper
towels, then transfer to a
warmed serving platter.
4. Pour off any remaining
oil and return the pan to
the heat. Melt the butter in
the pan and add the green
garlic, and a little salt and
pepper. Let cook without
browning for about one
minute, then add the lemon
juice.
5. Spoon the green garlic
butter over the fish.
Sprinkle with parsley, garnish with lemon wedges
and serve immediately.
Yield: 4 servings.

The walking dead: putting
the guilt back in killing

games.
handoff couldn’t
have been more straightforward. In “World at War,” the
2008 iteration of the wildly
popular Call of Duty series,
the game designers, perhaps
sensing that players were tiring of the pleasures of killing
the soldiers of the Third
Reich, introduced a new
mode:
Nazi
zombies.
Shooting already dead members of Hitler’s army proved
even more satisfying than
doing the same to (digitally)
living but historical Germans.
Out with World War II, in
with World War Z.
The lineage isn’t quite that
simple, of course. Zombies
have a long history in games,
including seminal titles like
“Resident Evil” (1996) and
“Wolfenstein 3D” (1992),
widely regarded as the original first-person shooter,
which itself was about fighting
some
kind
of
undead/Nazi hybrid. And
apocalyptic fiction has
become unavoidable in postSeptember 11 America.
What’s distinct about the
video game strain of the infection is that “zombies” and
“Nazis” are usually interchangeable concepts. Each is
presented as a dehumanised
enemy that won’t make players feel guilty for all the exultant violence they inflict. The
zombie apocalypse neatly
removes thorny questions of
morality and makes the
action about as fraught as
gobbling the ghosts in “PacMan” or blasting the descending aliens in “Space
Invaders.”
Even a game like last fall’s
“Tea Party Zombies Must
Die,” in which the player is
asked to lay waste joyfully to
the likes of Bill O’Reilly and
Sean Hannity, depends on
this understanding. By turning conservative personalities
into zombies and thus making it not only acceptable but
also acceptably exciting to
shoot them, “the game scripts
its violence into morally
excusable self-defence,” as
Peter Freeman wrote recently
in a thought-provoking essay
on games in Crisis, the
Roman Catholic journal.
Given the new dawn for the
dead, it’s unsurprising that
The Walking Dead, the popular comic book turned even
more popular AMC television
series, has now been given its
own video game adaptation.
What’s unexpected and welcome about this new treatment of Robert Kirkman’s fiction is how different it is from
the other entries in gaming’s
New Zombie Wave. The
Walking Dead zombies aren’t
just soulless. They’re soulful,
too – killing one actually
means something.
“A New Day,” the first
installment in a planned fiveepisode series by Telltale
Games, takes two to three
hours to play and can be
downloaded for $4.99 on
computers, PlayStations and
Z

Xboxes. The next four
episodes are expected to be
released at a rate of about one
every month.
Like a George Romero
movie, zombie games typically have Dead in the title: in
addition to Walking, they are
Rising, they are Left 4, they
are on an Island. Unlike a
George Romero movie, the
games usually place little to
no emphasis on the lives of
any of the zombies before
they were turned – no sense
that these nauseating creatures were once our neighbours, our friends, our husbands, wives and children.
Instead the zombies are
merely a kind of puzzle
crossed with a physical challenge: an exhilarating,
creepy and sometimes hilarious obstacle devoid of anything a theatergoer would
understand as drama. In
contrast, “The Walking
Dead” goes for a less kinetic,
more story-driven approach,
one in which there’s as much
watching as there is playing.
The game is pretty to look at
– in essence, a colourised
version of Kirkman’s comic
books – and the interactive
elements are frequently limited to choosing lines from a
menu of dialogue; walking in
very small, constrained
spaces; and examining a
handful of items in the environment. The first episode is
in some ways a “Rosencrantz
and
Guildenstern
Are
Undead” – now there’s a
video game franchise waiting
to be born – in which lesser
characters from the comics
are given lives outside the
original work.
Despite this promising
setup, there are times when
the narrative emphasis feels
like a mistake. The middle
scenes – a respite at a farmhouse, Everett’s arrival at a
fortified pharmacy in Macon,
Ga. – drag, and “press X to
kill zombie” is often the level
of interactivity presented.
But what zombies! Taking an
ax to the reanimated corpse
of a character’s brother in
the streets of Macon, or
deciding whether to give a
gun to a woman who was bitten and now wants to kill
herself before she is reborn –
these moments have more
sadness and subtlety in them
than other games muster in
40 hours. The creatures in
“The Walking Dead” are
designed to be killed by your
hand, but – for once – you’re
not quite meant to have fun
doing it.

ISRAELI supermodel Bar Refaeli says men do not flirt with
her despite her good looks. “Let’s put it out there, no one
hits on me. I don’t get hit on by guys. No one flirts with
me,” she told TV host Conan O’Brien. However, Refaeli, who
previously dated actor Leonardo DiCaprio, does have a list of
qualities she looks for in a man, reports femalefirst.co.uk “Of
course there are the obvious things. I want him to be sweet
and kind and have values and morals. The first thing I notice
is his teeth. I have a fetish. I like a great smile and really
white, bright teeth,” she said.
Singer Cheryl Cole has reportedly been offered 10 million pounds to join the judges’ panel of singing reality
show American Idol. Cole is said to have been
approached to join the show by music mogul Simon
Cowell’s arch-rival Simon Fuller who launched the show
around the world 10 years ago though Cole’s spokesman
claimed the rumour was not true reports dailystar.co.uk.
Fuller sued Cowell when he came up with The X Factor,
claiming it was “a rip-off” of his show.

NLIKE most reality show romances, this
one’s got staying power. In April, American
Idol alumna Diana DeGarmo opened up to
the media about her long-term romance with
fellow former contestant Ace Young, who
placed seventh in Season 5.
The pair first crossed paths when they appeared
together in a 2010 revival of Hair on broadway, and
quickly bonded over their experience on the reality
show.
“We played with the idea (of dating) when we
first met,” DeGarmo said. “(But) we were friends,
first and foremost..We had both been through
Idol, which is such a unique and life-changing
experience, and we just truly bonded.”
To couch it in Idol terms, they didn’t, “go
through to Hollywood (right away),” DeGarmo, 24,
joked. But now? Gushed the star, “We are best
friends! I truly believe us having been through Idol
is one of the big reasons as to why we understand
each other so well; unless you go through it, you
don’t get it.”
Given their shared Idol history, the reality show
stage served as the perfect setting for Young to
make it official with his love. In a scene-stealing
moment during American Idol’s finale, the crooner
got down on one knee and proposed to the season
three runner-up.
“This has always been home to us and I felt that
this would be the perfect place to ask a simple
question,” Young told a shocked, and tearful,
DeGarmo. “We have conquered broadway together. We have created our new music together. We
have an amazing group of people around us... I
love you to death. You’re my best friend. I want to

‘Transformers: The Ride’

NIVERSAL Studios Hollywood recently unveiled
its newest attraction, “Transformers: The Ride3D,” based on the blockbuster films and toys that
the theme park’s operators called their best ride yet.
The ride, which opens to the public on May 25 as the
United States kicks off its summer holiday season, takes
people by car through a futuristic city under siege by evil
and immersed in combat between heroic shape-shifting
characters, the Autobots, and their nemeses, the
Decepticons.
Rather than serve as witness to the conflict, guests are
made to feel like characters
in the battle, enlisted
alongside the Autobots
to save the world.
“We think this is the
best ride that we’ve ever
created,” Steve Burke,
President & CEO of
NBCUniversal said . “It’s
got a lot of different aspects to it
that you literally couldn’t do as recently as ten
years ago.”

Built across 2,000 feet of track on a 60,000 square feet
stage in a 60-feet. high building, the ride was created to
revolutionise the amusement park experience through
motion-based flight simulation.
Autobots and Decepticons battle all around the cars
as sensory stimulators unleash the heat of explosions,
spit of the robots and quake of gears and exploding
bombs.
The attraction also features the original voice work of
actors Peter Cullen and Frank Welker, who voiced the
robotic characters in three hit Transformers movies
that took in over $2.6 billion, combined, at worldwide
box offices.

island of Anguilla in the Caribbean this weekend
to “reclaim her bachelorette status.”
The Modern Family star was in a “very flirty” mood
while she and three friends fled to the luxurious
Viceroy Anguilla resort, to “recover her independence.”
“Sofia looked like she was having a blast with her
friends and got really flirty with some of the staff at
the resort,” Radaronline quoted a source as saying.
“She was on vacation with a group of close friends

Malik, set to sizzle in the
Kannada version of hit
Bollywood film The Dirty
Picture, aims to go a step ahead
of Vidya Balan’s act in the
original. She maintains the
two films are different.
“I have not seen the The
Dirty Picture in Hindi,
though I have heard that Vidya
Balan has delivered an awesome
performance in the film. But I
really want to go one step ahead in
my performance in this film,” said
Veena.
The actress, who rose to fame in
India after her stint in controversial reality show Bigg Boss 4, says it
is unfair to compare the two films.

allowed herself to become obsessed
with losing weight following her little girl’s birth, instead saying she
wants to “enjoy motherhood”.
Some stuck up for her, with one
blogger commenting, “Good for you
Aishwarya, focus on your baby and
not on these idiots obsessing over
your body.” Another wrote, “She is a
real woman looking after a baby.
We should be concern for her health
and happiness especially if she is
nursing the baby.”
Bachchan is heralded in the
country by many as the perfect
image of beauty, and so there is
huge pressure on her to look perfect at all times. However, if her
showing at Cannes is anything to
go by Aishwarya can have her cake
and eat it: as it looks like she can
have her dream of enjoying her
beautiful baby daughter, while
ignoring critics and getting back to
her sexy self.
“Please don’t compare the
Bollywood film with the Kannada
film that I am doing now,” said
Veena.
This is her first Kannada film,
and she is confident it will be
appreciated.
“My first Kannada film has a
good package of entertainment and
sentimental scenes. I’m sure I will
entertain the audience with my
performance and at the same time
they would also feel sorry for the
trials that my character undergoes
in the film.
“I will win the hearts of the audience through this performance. I
like the role,” she added.
Veena said she can relate to her
role in the film, adding: “This is a
different story and it connects well
with all the struggling young
women who want to make it big in
their respective fields.
“I was moved after hearing the
story as there were many incidents
which remembered incidents that
happened in my life albeit in a different fashion.”
The actress is even more excited
as she has wrapped a “sexy” and
“stylish” photo shoot for the film,
insisting it will present her in
Marilyn Monroe style.
She said the photo shoot, done
by photographer Suresh, was sexy,
stylish, hot, raunchy, naughty and
visually-captivating.
The film’s lead actor Akshay had
also participated in the photo
shoot. The film is produced by
Venkateappa, and directed by
Thrishool.
Veena hopes she is also offered
good roles in other regional film
industries down south.
