Julia Louis-Dreyfus
brings ‘insider’ finesse to Veep

September to shoot HBO’s
new comedy Veep, in
which she plays Vice
President Selina Meyer,
decked out in a power bob
and
importantWashington-lady stockings. This interplay
between politics and
show business has
increasingly
grown
strange and tangled.
There has been a profusion lately of celebrities
portraying real-life female politicians,
from Tina Fey as former Alaska
Govenor Sarah Palin on Saturday
Night Live to Julianne Moore’s more
sober (or, rather, sobering) treatment
of Palin in Game Change, to Meryl
Streep as former British Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
As for Louis-Dreyfus as Meyer, the
pairing of her sex and her office might
seem like yet another allusion to Palin.
But Meyer is an entirely fictional, even
chimerical, creation. The central joke of
Veep, in fact, is that Meyer, whose party
affiliation is never revealed, is far from
an ideologue; rather, she is a political
animal struggling for survival in an
alternately hostile and indifferent environment. Unlike Palin, who seemed to
come out of nowhere, the very point of
Meyer is that she’s a consummate
insider. There’s something about Selina
that’s also inescapably familiar. It has
to do with her combination of intelligence and petulance, self-confidence
and neuroticism, narcissism and
charm. In many ways, Selina is the
quintessential Julia Louise-Dreyfus
character: a power-suited version of
Elaine from Seinfeld.
Louis-Dreyfus, however, turns out to
be distinctly un-Elaine-like in person.
Not only is she much more stylish than
the characters she usually plays, but
she’s also considerably sunnier. And
unlike her perennially single or prolifically divorced characters, she has been
married to the same person for the past
25 years, the writer-producer Brad Hall
(with whom she has two sons, Henry,
19, and Charlie, 14).
There is one way in which LouisDreyfus is like her new character: She
curses like a sailor. “I’m a big swearer in
my life,” she says. She sees it as a way of
keeping the private self separate from
the public, and of releasing some of the
tension that builds from being constantly on display. The proclivity comes
in handy for Veep, where characters’
frustrations tend to culminate in soaring arias of profanity so ardent and genuine and unguarded that they can only
be described as life-affirming. What
better way to purge the phoniness from

Every decade gets the political show
it deserves, or thinks it deserves,
though some decades are pretty disingenuous. The West Wing gave us an
idealised account of the Clinton era,
with a saintly president and high-minded politicians. In the 2000s, 24 offered
an ultraparanoid version of the Bush
era that legitimised torture as the primary means of dealing with a world in
a constant state of crisis.
Veep, by contrast, comes not to justify Caesar but to goose him. It captures
our post-Reagan, post-Clinton, postBush, 24-hour tabloid news and
Internet-haterade dystopia, and
reflects our collective queasy ambivalence toward a political system that we
fear simply reflects our own shallowness back at us. If The West Wing was a
fantasy of hypercompetence, Veep is its
opposite: a black-humour vision of politics at its bleakest, in which both sides
have been co-opted by money and special interests and are reduced to posturing, subterfuge, grandstanding and
photo ops. Naturally, it’s hilarious.
Despite her many flaws, Selina comes
across as sympathetic: a cog in a failing
system that’s dirty, noisy and obsolete.
Aside from a single, brief brush with
greatness, she spends most of her time
setting and putting out public relations
fires, trying to stay in the game.
In her private life, Louis-Dreyfus is

active in politics, having campaigned
for Al Gore and raised money for environmental causes; recently, she
appeared in an anti-Keystone pipeline
video. But she sees no dissonance
between being passionate about politics
in life and lampooning them on TV. In
preparation for the role, Louis-Dreyfus
spoke to Gore, as well as chiefs of staff,
vice-presidential speechwriters and her
old friend and fellow Saturday Night
Live alumnus Sen. Al Franken, posing
questions about whether they followed
guidelines when talking to the press
and whether the Secret Service followed them to the bathroom at night.
She also spent hours observing the gestures, postures and body language of
politicians on C-Span and getting them
down pat.
Louis-Dreyfus was born in New York
in 1961, and her father, William LouisDreyfus, is a French-born businessman
whose great-great-grandfather Leopold
founded the commodities firm SA
Louis Dreyfus & Cie. Julia’s parents
divorced when she was a baby, and her
mother married Dr L Thompson
Bowles, dean of the George
Washington University medical school.
His work for Project Hope, a teaching
hospital on a ship, took the family to
places like Colombia, Tunisia and
Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), where she
lived for year, enrolled in a convent
school. “I was really little. I was seven.
It was hard. I was homesick, and my
mom would come and eat lunch with
me there every day. Everything was
unfamiliar. There were elephants in the
street, and the bathroom was a hole in
the ground,” she says. “But their math
programme was pretty good actually. It
was quite advanced.”
The family settled back in
Washington when Louis-Dreyfus was
eight, and she grew up there, watching
the world of Washington as both a
native and an outsider. It gives her an
edge, says Frank Rich, the former New
York Times columnist who serves as an
executive producer on Veep. “It’s a very
rare, idiosyncratic thing to have grown
up in Washington not as a part of a
political family,” he says. “It’s a very offcentre take that you get... Certain things
about Washington never change,
including the fact that it’s not nearly
this romantic Hollywood set that people outside think it is... It’s actually a
place where people dress out of fashion,
where there are a lot of aspiring young
people who have grunt jobs and live terribly.... And if you grew up there as not
part of a political family, you’re in on
the joke.”
“I feel like I’ve been preparing for this
my whole life,” Louis-Dreyfus says of
her new role as vice president.
“Everything that I’ve done up to this
point has helped me in this particular
moment.” Not only have the parallels
between politics and celebrity given her
plenty to draw upon, but the longevity
and success of her career has fed into it,
too. “There is an authority to this character that I feel I have because I’ve been
doing this a long time. There’s also an
insecurity underneath that authority,
and that’s something I’m very comfortable with. I don’t feel that secure, you
know.”
As much as Veep draws on real life, it
has already proved eerily prescient. In
an early episode, Selina caps a long and
trying day with a disastrous photo at a
frozen-yogurt shop, where her press
secretary has been fielding complaints
from the owner about his taxes. The
episode was shot after, in real life, Vice
President Joe Biden visited a custard
shop and sharply chastised the manager for complaining about his taxes, setting off a minor controversy. The resonance doesn’t surprise Louis-Dreyfus,
as a real-life celebrity or a pretend
politician. “Think of these things on all
the time everywhere you go,” she says.
“You cannot put one foot in front of the
other without being photographed or
videotaped.”
The pressure of being constantly on
display, having to present oneself in
such a narrow, restricted way it all
strikes her as incredibly silly. Which is
why, of course, it’s such a fertile source
for comedy. Why should it matter what
kind of dog a politician chooses or the
flavour of frozen yogurt she orders?
Why do we demand public figures be
“authentic,” yet recoil from them
when they slip and let their humanity
show? “We live in a culture now
where it’s almost like we are used to
being lied to,” she says. “It’s an
incredible age that we live in.”
Stewart upset with edited scene

ACTRESS Kristen Stewart, who shot a raunchy scene with real life and on
screen beau Robert Pattinson in a Twilight movie, was disappointed to see it
edited out. The pair had peeled off for the scene in 2011 film The Twilight
Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I, but producers later toned it down to avoid
being slapped with a restrictive rating. Stewart admits she was surprised to
see the final product, as she and Pattinson had gone to great lengths to
make the scene extremely passionate, reports dailystar.co.uk. “It is a bit
intense but it’s edited,” she said.
ACTOR Ben Affleck took to a social networking site to wish his wife
Jennifer Garner a happy Mother’s Day. He described her as a world
class mom. “I want to say Happy Mother’s Day to the moms in my
life: my mom Chris and my amazing wife Jennifer, who is an incredible, spectacular, world-class mom,” he said in a video posted on
Facebook. “Being a mother is the hardest job there is,” added
Affleck. The couple have three kids son, Samuel and daughters
Seraphina and Violet, reported people.com.

attract attention to
itself by denaturing
familiar songs and,
in a sense,

comedic

ARMIN became
famous
by
assaulting the
songs of others,
performing glib
and
highly
stylised
YouTube covers that inadvertently doubled as sketch
comedy. Those that attracted the most attention were
the hip-hop songs: Seeing
the duo’s cheery white
singer, Amy Heidemann,
gnash her way through
complex rhymes and keep
up was a spectacle, no
doubt, if an awkward one.
Notionally, Karmin is a
duo, but Nick Noonan
mostly serves as a keyboard-playing buffer. It’s
Heidemann’s show, a onewoman cabaret of good and
bad taste, high and low
skill, and absolutely no filter. She’s a Broadway character, broad and gaudy,
looking as if she were prepared for an impending
sock hop outbreak. (Some
of the group’s YouTube
videos are actually hairstyling tutorials.)
In an era in which
Kreayshawn is signed to a
major label, Heidemann is
a credible enough rapper,
at least when copying other
people’s
songs.
On
Karmin’s major-label debut
EP, Hello (Epic), though,
she’s rapping for herself.
But whatever honesty
Heidemann is hoping to
project in her original
material is undermined by
the clumsiness of her presentation when covering
other songs. Karmin is still
best known as an act whose
fundamental purpose was
to attract attention to itself
by denaturing familiar
songs and, in a sense, rendering them comedic.
This sort of highly referential meta-pop isn’t original to Karmin. Like K-pop,
Aqua’s Barbie Girl and the
Eurovision Song Contest,
Karmin is foreign (despite
being American), abusing
and replicating styles without understanding the
meanings
beneath.
Heidemann’s flow is intricate and deeply irritating –
this EP features what are
almost certainly the only
mentions of “ice tall latte”
and “sea anemones” to
appear in rhyme.
Is it possible to hear
Karmin’s music without
hearing Karmin’s baggage?
It would mean filtering out
the listening that takes
place in the ear from the
listening that takes place in
the brain.
The goal of Hello is to
take an act known for
repurposing other people’s
material and give it an
identity of its own. And yet
the shadows across this
album are long and wide:
There’s I Told You So, a
clear revision of Chris
Brown’s Look at Me Now,
one of Karmin’s signature
covers; Too Many Fish
sounds like a cruise ship
band covering Beyonce’s
K
Kitty Pryde
in her Okay
Cupid music
video
Single Ladies (Put a Ring
on It); and Brokenhearted
falls somewhere between
Kesha and Katy Perry.
Karmin’s style, it turns
out, is reference; if it were
to have come out with a
wholly original sound, it
would have been alienating.
Karmin’s rise also reflects
that hip-hop, once something that outsiders had to
apply for admission into, is
fair game for anyone. The
barriers to entry aren’t
there anymore. The line
between theatrically revising other people’s raps and
using the medium seriously, for your own purposes,
has been all but eradicated.
Is Karmin making fun of
the records it covers or
emulates? Of course not,
not intentionally, anyhow.
But by delivering them in
exaggerated styles more
notable for their affectations than for their execution, it in effect renders its
source material as a punch
line, something not deserving of respect. It’s the bad
kind of irreverence.
On its own, Karmin could
be treated as an aberration.
But its case isn’t helped by
its arrival in the middle of a
fascinating and quickly
evolving moment for white
female rappers. Karmin
may be demonstrating the
viability of the Kesha model
of sing-rap double duty, but
nowhere near as well as,
say, Cher Lloyd, from
England, or My Name Is
Kay, from Canada.
But even though that’s
the most prominent mode
going, it’s by no means the
most intriguing. A more
fascinating way forward
comes in the form of Kitty
Pryde, who created a minor
Internet starburst this week
with the release of a video
for her song Okay Cupid.
Raised on a diet of Lil B
and Odd Future, Kitty
Pryde is a part-time college
student and full-time store
clerk. A few months ago she
released an EP, The Lizzie
McGuire Experience, full of
naive and unflustered
rhymes about people she
loves and people she hates.
After that came Justin
Bieber, about the teenage
dreamboat, and then Okay
Cupid, which is arrestingly
strange, and arrestingly
good.
Kitty Pryde raps as if she
were talking, patiently and
clearly, in a mildly whiny
voice of the sort children
use to get parents to pay
attention to them. The
song,
produced
by
Beautiful Lou, churns hypnotically as she rhymes
unlikely syllables and lets
her lines unfurl past the
expected rhyme breaks.
The video, which was
released this week, captures the epitome of
teenage lethargy, pining for
a useless boy while your
friends clutch drinks and
hear out your silly fantasies: “Call me sober when
you’re ready/Not going
steady/But babe, I’ve
planned our wedding
already.”
In recent interviews Kitty
Pryde seems to be taking a
lighthearted and casual
approach to her craft. She
isn’t fighting for any right –
those days are gone, most-
ly. She doesn’t rap because
it’s funny or novel, but
rather because it’s simply
the best and most comfortable tool available to
her. The results so far,
while almost no one has
been watching, have the
intimacy and comfort of
private recordings. They
transfix.
Knowingness
pulses
through these songs.
What’s more, in the Okay
Cupid video, she’s wearing a T-shirt featuring
the cover of Ovary
Action,
the
lone
seven-inch EP of the
Yeastie Girlz, an allgirl response act to the
Beastie Boys that had a
brief career in the late
1980s rapping about freedom of speech and sex
equality. It’s an outrageous curio, either a savvy
wink or just a cheeky joke.
Either way, Kitty Pryde is
on to something.

posted an 11.87-second
quarter-mile time at
Cecil County Dragway
in
Rising
Sun,
Maryland. And on another run that
same day, the car posted a 120.3mph trap speed. Both the et and
trap speed figures set a world
record for a car powered by a K04equipped 2.0 TSI engine. And
while there are quicker and faster
VWs out there, none of those are
either street legal or the kind of car
you’d want to drive on a daily basis.
According to the driver of the
GTI, an AWE Tuning engineer who
chose to remain anonymous, you
don’t have to be a drag racer to set
a good time. “The funny thing
about the record-setting vehicle is

that essentially anyone could have

burnout to get the tires warm,
staged the car with launch control,
and when the light went green, I
just let go of the brake, held the
throttle to the floor and shifted at

What makes AWE’s MK6 GTI
stand out is that the car actually
was a daily driver for some of
AWE’s crewmembers during its
development and the fact that the
Quarter Mile Package in their MK6
is essentially a bolt-on kit that
doesn’t require internal engine
mods. The record-setting car, however, ran on VP 109 race gas and
was fitted with Hoosier drag racing
slicks. It also was stripped of its

spare tire and floor mats to bring
the weight down to 2,825 pounds.
Its Bilstein PSS10 coilovers were
set to full soft in front and full stiff
in back to control weight transfer.
On previous runs using regular
tires instead of racing slicks, AWE’s
GTI ran 12.26 in the quarter-mile, a
figure more likely what buyers of
the Quarter Mile Package can
expect.
To put those numbers into perspective, both an M3 and a Carrera
S run 12.4 in the quarter-mile. So
for an additional 5K, any MK6 GTI
can run with some pretty heavy hitters and easily shame any other hot
hatch or car in its class.

According to AWE, the kit is
good for 360 hp at 5950 rpm and
370 lb-ft of torque at 4600 rpm to
the crank with 93-octane gas. With
race gas, the numbers are 388 hp at
5800 rpm and 380 lb-ft at 4600
rpm. Max boost pressure is 22 psi.
AWE felt that 370 lb-ft and 22 psi
were well within the reliability window for the E888 TSI engine.
Going beyond that would probably
require some internal engine modifications, which would be contrary
to their goal of a bolt-on package
that provided both increased performance and daily drivability. The
engine in the record-setting car
hasn’t been taken apart to check for
signs of wear but the company says
it has seen no signs of wear or performance degradation.
Unfortunately, the car is now at
AWE’s Japanese distributor in
Osaka, so we didn’t get a chance to
drive it. But the numbers say
enough, and for such a straightforward, relatively easy system, getting below 12 seconds is definitely a
high-water mark for a daily driven
VW.

this year’s Cannes Film
Festival will be a mix of
glamour and cinema.
Four Indian films will
be premiered at Cannes this
year and three Indian beauties
will walk the red carpet.
Anurag Kashyap’s directorial
venture Gangs of Wasseypur
will premiere in the non-competitive Directors’ Fortnight section of the fest. The film
Peddlers
and
Ashim
Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely will
also be screened. “I think it’s
important that India is seen
as a country that produces
different kinds of cinema, not
just Bollywood films,”
Ahluwalia said. A short film,
Chana, directed by Nikhil
Pherwani, will also be
screened.
Meanwhile, Aishwarya
Rai Bachchan will walk the
red carpet at Cannes for
the eleventh time this
year. The actress will
attend the dinner hosted
by
the
American
Foundation for AIDS
Research with other Hollywood
celebrities. Sources said Frieda
Pinto will be present at the
opening ceremony and Sonam
Kapoor will walk the red carpet
at the closing ceremony of the
festival.

ride auto-rickshaws on the
streets of Mumbai. At a

were made to travel in a
jeep next to an auto rickshaw race organised by the

rickshaw. I think the reason I wasn’t allowed to

Talking about the stress Rowdy
Rathore has put on him, Akshay Kumar
optimistically said, “Every actor is worried about his film. A little stress is
always there.”
Dressed in a purple top and shocking
pink jeans, Akshay looked rowdy than
ever.
“When I got these clothes for the first
time, I was shocked but then I got used
to it. A lot of people like to wear such
clothes. This is just a character and I
loved playing it,” he said. Akshay was
full of praise for Sonakshi his
Dabangg co-star.
“Sonakshi is a very simple girl, she
works and goes home. She is very punctual and professional. She has never
bullied or played pranks on people,” he
added. The film is all set to release on
June 1.
