Parenting guide BABIES can smile at birth, or even sooner — ultrasounds have actually spotted upside-down frowns on babies in the last trimester of pregnancy. What’s unclear is why they do it so early on. “Some research shows that they smile most often as they’re falling asleep and waking up,” says Alan Fogel, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and author of Infancy: Infant, Family and Society. “Those times are probably inherently pleasurable for babies, and their good feelings seem to create a smile.” It is true that social smiling — when a baby breaks into a gummy grin in response to something outside herself, like the sight of your face or the start of a favourite routine — doesn’t begin until 2 months. By the time your baby is 3 to 4 months old she’ll be able to pull off broader smiles that lift her cheekbones and may include laughing. You may grow addicted to making her beam at you, but follow her cues: If she smiles and then turns away, she could be overstimulated. Give her a break, let her recharge, and remember there are years of smiles yet to come! FEEDING A PICKY EATER TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK O MIGOD, she’s actually eating it, I think in amazement one morning as I watch my daughter scarf down an entire apple without any prodding. I feel like dancing around the table, but out of fear that she’ll stop chewing, I try not to make a big deal out of what is, for me, an extremely big deal. Just a few weeks before, getting 8year-old Allison to eat an apple — or any other healthy food — was a major, exhausting production and had been so ever since she was a toddler. At around 2, she developed a loathing for formerly beloved foods, such as sweet potatoes, oranges, and turkey, and the list of what she would eat shrank until it included just macaroni and cheese, peanut butter sandwiches, chocolate milk, and very few fruits — all in minuscule quantities. Our dining table became a battleground where my husband and I pitted our weapons (logic, bribes, threats) against our child’s (a cast-iron will). We were defeated every time. What’s made the difference this morning is that we finally have a strategy. Here’s how I was able to break our miserable cycle and what you need to know — and do — to get started right with your baby. Surprisingly, we’re all born hyper-fussy about food. “Babies are hard-wired to like sweet things and reject sour or bitter ones,” says Leann Birch, PhD, head of the department of human development and family studies at Pennsylvania State University. “This is because in nature, sweetness is an indication of energy-dense foods, while sourness may be an indication of poisonous ones.” Unfortunately, this nifty survival tactic can throw parents off when it’s time to make the transition from the bottle to solid foods. “The first time you put a spoonful of applesauce in your baby’s mouth, he’s likely to happily accept it,” explains Birch. “But the first time he tries a spoonful of pureed green beans, watch out!” At this point, many parents decide that their child despises green beans. So they try other foods, only to get the same discouraging response. The common result: They end up labelling the child a fussy eater, which becomes a self-fulfiling prophecy. Don’t give up so quickly. “Babies are likely to reject a new non-sweet food five or six times or more,” says Birch. “But experiments have shown that if you’re willing to persist, your child will accept Child of Mine: Feeding With Love and Good Sense. While it’s okay to give in to your child’s whims now and then, don’t make a practice of it. “Erratic eating is also normal at this age,” says Satter. “Your toddler may want white yogurt one day and pink the next because it’s her new favourite colour, and if you don’t mind keeping both on hand, that’s okay.” One-food eating jags are nothing to worry about either, says Dr Sears, as long as the favoured food is nutritionally sound, like pizza or peanut butter sandwiches. Drinking problems “In my expe- "Babies are hard-wired to like sweet things and reject sour or bitter ones. This is because in nature, sweetness is an indication of energy-dense foods, while sourness may be an indication of poisonous ones” – Leann Birch, PhD some of these foods eventually.” So wipe those beans off your face and keep at it. To improve your chances of success, serve foods that she can feed herself. “Babies are so intent on mastering eating skills that they’re more likely to try foods that they can practice with easily,” says Parenting contributing editor William Sears, MD, co-author of The Family Nutrition Book: Everything You Need to Know About Feeding Your Children From Birth Through Adolescence. “Babies also like to dip and dunk. After they’re one, providing some guacamole, healthy salad dressing, or yogurt is a good way to get them to try new foods and to boost the meal’s nutrition.” Beginning around age 1, Emily Rosenzweig refused to eat anything except bland white foods such as cottage cheese, yogurt, or plain pasta. “Now that she’s 3, she won’t try something new even if she’s starving — and even if it’s white,” reports her mother, Pam. Regardless of whether you flunked Baby Feeding 101 and failed to offer green beans the required number of times or your child sailed through babyhood with a tummyful of healthy foods, toddlerhood presents special mealtime challenges. Some stumbling blocks and ways to triumph: Minor rebellions “Developmentally, kids this age are very oppositional, and if you push them, they may reject foods just to see your reaction,” says Ellyn Satter, a registered dietitian and author of rience, too much milk and juice is actually a leading cause of poor eating. Both are high in calories, so they dampen a child’s appetite and displace other foods from the diet,” says Will Wilkoff, MD, and the author of Coping With a Picky Eater: A Guide for the Perplexed Parent. Although your child can have unlimited water, she should drink only four ounces of milk at each meal and four ounces of juice twice a day at snacktime, Dr Wilkoff says. When Stephanie Mullen got this advice from her pediatrician, she decided to break her 2-year-old daughter’s milk-bottle habit cold turkey. “It was really scary,” recalls the mom. “Matilda went on a hunger strike for two full days, but I stood firm. On the third morning, she woke up ravenous and has been eating better ever since.” Perhaps the most common cause of problems is the gap between how much parents want kids to eat and h o w m u c h they can actually consume. “Colin, who’s 2, will take three bites of a sandwich or three spoonfuls of spaghetti, then claim he’s done,” says his mom, Lisa Perry. “It just doesn’t seem possible that he could live on such a paltry amount.” “Remember that a toddler’s stomach is the size of his fist,” says Dr Sears. “Put his fist next to a plate and you’ll see if your expectations are too great.” In addition, he’s growing only one-tenth as much as he did as a baby, so he consumes less. For most toddlers and preschoolers, then, three square meals is an unrealistic and unnecessary goal. A child can eat a good breakfast, a so-so lunch, and then next to nothing for dinner and still be perfectly healthy. You’re on the right course, say experts, if your child’s height and weight are continuing to follow the proper curve on his growth chart. “When we analysed children’s meal patterns,” says Birch, “we saw that though they might eat a big breakfast one day and none the next, they automatically made adjustments at other meals so that their entire caloric intake was consistent from day to day.” Interfering with this innate ability to know how much to eat can backfire. “As a mother, I know it’s hard not to become emotionally involved in your child’s eating,” says Birch, “so we beg or bribe him to take just one more bite.” But that strategy can have unwanted consequences. “You’re teaching your kid to ignore his internal signals, which can lead to overeating later on,” she says. “Plus, as soon as you withdraw the reward, he’ll often stop eating the nutritious food and may even develop an increased dislike for it.” “It’s okay if your child doesn’t eat his vegetables one night — or for two months straight. His brain won’t stop developing,” says Dr Wilkoff. What’s not okay is for a parent to become so invested in a child’s eating habits that every meal becomes a source of dread for the whole family. If the approaches above don’t help, there’s still much you can do to improve even ingrained pickiness. Wilkoff suggests parents try a very specific approach but warns that picky eating is a normal behaviour that almost every child will exhibit sometime during his first six years, and while you can improve it, you probably won’t cure it. You can, however, make the family meal more enjoyable. “It’s only in a relaxed atmosphere that your fussy eater is likely to become more adventurous,” Wilkoff says. If you’re going to try this method, you’ll need to stay strong no matter how loudly your picky eater whines and wails during the initial adjustment period. Friday, December 9, 2011 ENVIRONMENT www.qatar-tribune.com 31 Unborn turtle communicate before hatching! Environment guide BABY turtles can communicate with one another before they hatch and can arrange to emerge from their eggs at the same time, an Australian study has claimed. The study of the Murray short-necked turtle found that embryos synchronised their hatching to prevent smaller turtles emerging alone and being attacked by predators such as foxes, The Daily Telegraph reported recently. The unhatched turtles may be able to sense each other’s heart vibrations or detect gases emitted from the breath of other turtles. Ricky Spencer, a co-author of the new study from the University of Western Study, said, ‘They might be cueing in on heart rates. They are all touching each other within the nests so there might be vibrations there.’ ‘A nest environment is pretty much an enclosed cavity where gas exchange might be a cue as well. They breathe, so if you get increases in carbon dioxide within a nest they might be cueing in on that.’ Catching crabs in rural Goa Fishing for crabs isn’t exactly a dream sport for those obsessed with hygiene. A rustic outdoor sport, it is still a favoured once-a-month outing for rural teenagers in those parts of Goa which are far removed from the tourism spotlight IANS A WAY from Goa’s sunkissed beaches, trance parties and neon lit coastal streets, young boys dressed in shorts are still happy wading shin-deep in muddy, smelly water armed with shark fins or rotten chicken entrails to hunt crabs. Fishing for crabs isn’t exactly a dream sport for those obsessed with hygiene. A rustic outdoor sport, it is still a favoured once-a-month outing for rural teenagers and some enterprising adults in those parts of Goa which are far removed from the tourism spotlight. Crabs must sense when Jonathan Fernandes, 27, is around. Jonathan is one of the most avid crab catchers from Varca, a village on the banks of the river Sal, around 60 km from state capital Panaji. “We set up crab traps usually during high tide as chances of catching a crab increases. But one can get good crabs even during low tide where the water is deep,” he says, explaining the nuances of the sport. Eaten curried, roasted or often fried, crab meat is succulent and sweet. But catching them is not a very pleasant task at all, unless you like handling putrid flesh - which is prime bait for this claw-toting beast. Nested in rocky nooks and crannies along river or creek bottoms, they come out in droves attracted by the smell of decomposing flesh. Crabbing in the many estuarine waters of Goa, as well as in the submerged fields, is done with the help of handmade traps. A trap called a ‘Cobllem’ in Konkani consists of a circular ring — made of metal nowadays — with another rod running across the diameter. A loose hanging net is secured to one side of the ring. Hanging from the diametrical rod is generally a piece of shark’s skin, fish waste, smelly chicken entrails to lure the crabs. “The bait is where it rests at the bottom. You can sit on the bank and sip on your drink in the meantime,” Jonathan said in an interview. Crab catchers generally set up more than half a dozen traps at a time in different parts of the water, with a nylon rope running from each trap tied to a piece of bark or rocky spike on shore. Now, after you’ve done your bit tied firm s o that the crabs, which are lured, keep tugging at it. This done, the trap is then lowered into the deep water to get the crabs, crabs do their best to help you out. “Once you yank the net up, the crabs caught below simply refuse to let those above them climb out of the net. Then they pull them back with their claws,” says Anzil Fernandes, another avid crab catcher from Betul. Incidentally, this peculiar, selfish trait exhibited by crabs is of particular significance to Goa. According to popular social lore, a ‘Goan crab’ is that person who is jealous of his peer’s success and does his best to pull him down. Anzil knows his crabs well. Colour and weight are significant parame- ters which determine the taste of the crabs. “We let go the smaller ones as they do not taste good. Also if you release them, they are probably going to visit your trap once more when they put on some muscle,” he quips. And if Anzil can judge the taste of a crab by looks, his friend Joel, a teenager from the same village, can determine the gender and hence can tell which crab goes into which cooking pot - all with a mere look. “The female crabs are usually curried as the spawn are known to add a unique flavour, while the male ones are either made into soup or gravy. An experienced crab catcher w i l l tell t h e sex of a crab with one look and confirm his finding by weighing it,” he says. “On a good day, one can get a crab every two minutes,” Anzil told us. Crab catching done, they are then dumped into an open pail to be carried back home. 32 Friday, December 9, 2011 CHANNEL SURFING www.qatar-tribune.com BEST ON TV TONIGHT 8:45 pm BBC World: SPORT TODAY 8:20 pm Disney Junior: MINI ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH 7:50 pm Extreme Sports: LG ACTION SPORTS WORLD... 11:00 pm Crime & Investigation: GUILTY: FORENSIC SCIENCE TV PRIME TIME GUIDE 7:00 PM 7:30 PM BBC WORLD CNN INTERNATIONAL CARTOON NETWORK DISNEY JUNIOR THE HUB WITH NIK GOWING THE BRIEF CODENAME: KIDS NEXT DOOR THE LITTLE MERMAID WORLD SPORT SCOOBY-DOO! How Arjun surprised his family ACTRESS Kangana Ranaut has no qualms in admitting that she is stubborn and that she never accepts her mistakes. “I don’t accept my mistakes. I never say I’m wrong, not even if I’m hanged,” she confessed on UTV Stars’ show Live My Life. The actress has been controversy’s favourite child whether it is for her relationships or for her tiffs with movie producers. But it has not affected her work and she has proved her mettle as an actor with her performances in films like Gangster - A Love Story and Tanu Weds Manu. She even won a national award for essaying the plight of a top model in Fashion. ARJUN Rampal gave a surprise to his family when he drove home in his dream car. “Surprised the kids and wife with the new BMW 7, have always wanted to buy that car. Finally did it. Wife happy, as I have to drop the kids to school,” Arjun tweeted. The life of the 39-year-old took a U-turn with the success of Rock On! for which he even won a national award for the best supporting actor. After that the model-turned-actor has been constantly climbing the success ladder - be it in films or his business ventures. His success spells happiness for his family — wife former model Mehr Jesia, and two daughters Mahikaa and Myra. KANGANA RANAUT ARJUN RAMPAL Kingfisher girl Angela prefers good stories over big names “Sharing screen space with superstars like Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif is a dream for any debutante, but for me a great story matters the most. I would love to be part of movies that depict today’s generation” Angela Jonsson Priyanaka Chopra (left) and Shahid Kapoor IANS K INGFISHER calendar model Angela Jonsson says it would be a dream come true if she got her first break with Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan or Saif Ali Khan, but her priority will always be a good story while choosing a movie. “Sharing screen space with superstars like Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif is a dream for any debutante, but for me a great story matters the most. In the past, I have seen movies like Shaitan and Delhi Belly. For me, both were interesting concepts and I would love to be part of movies that depict today’s generation,” Angela told IANS. Born in Chennai to an Icelandic father and Mangalorean mother, she won the 2011 Kingfisher Calendar Model Hunt and featured in the 2011 edition of the calendar. It was reported that she had signed a film with director AR Murugadoss titled Maalai Neram Mazhaithuli and even started her shoot. However, the 21-year-old denies it saying that she is currently polishing her acting skills. “I met with the director, but I haven’t signed the film yet so there is no question of shooting the movie. Meeting people is a wonderful and learning experience for me but I am not in a hurry to sign anything or everything without giving things a second thought,” she said “It’s very important to make a good movie as there are many aspects to be taken care of. I want to train myself before entering the film industry and for that I am working on my acting, dance and diction skills,” she added. The model is quite popular among designers and walked the ramp for the likes of Manish Malhotra, Vikram Phadnis, Tarun Tahiliani, Malini Ramani and Shantanu-Nikhil. And she gives credits to the Kingfisher model hunt for her success. “Last year I was one of the participants at the Kingfisher Calendar hunt and it was a fabulous experience. I learnt a lot and got the privilege to tour the world with best mentors. Winning the title paved the way to stardom,” she said. This year she judged the Kingfisher Calendar Girl Hunt 2012, which aired on NDTV Good Times, and says it was a bigger responsibility than being a contestant. “This year the platform was the same but the role was different. I went there as a judge for one of the episodes. The girls this time were a little nervous as the competition was tougher. It was interesting to share advice with these girls and get their feedback. The only tip I gave to all of them was to work hard and try to give their best in whatever they do,” she said. No space in Mumbai to shoot Shahid-Priyanka qawwali! IANS D IRECTOR Kunal Kohli needed ample space to put up a set for the next schedule of his film, but he couldn’t find a location in Mumbai so had to scurry to Madh Island to build his set. “I needed to create pre-partition Punjab in 1910 and couldn’t shoot in actual Punjab because the topography has changed completely. So we decided to put up a vast set. But none of the studios in Mumbai had space! So my art director Munish Sappal, who is a Punjab expert after Pinjar and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, finally built it on Madh Island,” said Kohli, who had earlier directed Hum Tum and Fanaa. On the set, choreographer Chinni Prakash is set to shoot a qawwali where Shahid Kapoor and Priyanaka Chopra will battle it out over that thing called love. “The qawwali, written by Prasoon Joshi and composed by Sajid-Wajid, is a hell-raiser. Both Shahid and Priyanka, though thorough professionals, are apparently bracing themselves for doing an Aashiqana qawwali in full public view, replete with references to boys with roving eyes and girls making eyes….” In the film, Shahid plays a Muslim boy, while Priyanka essays a Sikh girl. Shahid and Priyanka had rocked the box office with their superb chemistry in the 2009 hit Kaminey. Kunal Kohli Marriage talk threatens Geeta Basra’s career! SUBHASH K JHA IANS G EETA Basra, who is said to be dating cricketer Harbhajan Singh, finds engagement-marriage rumours infuriating because these can harm her career, which is yet to take off. “He (Harbhajan) is a dear friend. Look, everyone in this industry has a personal life. I am not saying I am single or not single. Beyond that, whether we are getting married or not...I am not getting into all that. I am here to work really hard. And it hurts to hear my hard work being trivialised by such rumours,” she said. “I’ve shot a terrific item song for Zilla Ghaziabad. Rumours of an engagement or marriage at this juncture would definitely harm my career. There is no shaadi on the anvil. Such talk will take my career ten steps backwards. I can’t afford that. When producers hear such rumours, they will obviously say, ‘Isski to shaadi hone wali hai.’ I’ve been hearing such talk for three years. How come I’m not married yet?” Reacting sharply to the latest engagement rumours, Geeta said, “I’ve been getting updates about my private life in the papers. Now they’re even drawing up a list of the guests. Let me set the record s t r a i g h t . Harbhajan is my very good friend. But we aren’t getting engaged or married. My personal life is my personal life. No way am I going to use it to stay in the news.” Refuting the J a n u a r y engagement rumours, Geeta said, “I am not getting engaged. Maybe Harbhajan is. You have to ask him. Forget engagement or marriage, I am starting a new movie in January. Let January come and the world will know. Why do I need to say anything? As per reports, Itni baar hamari Geeta Basra breakup aur shaadi ho chuki hai. I feel there’s no need to clarify anything.” “Who is giving these reports on my engagement and marriage?” Geeta’s last release was The Train in 2007 and she is making a comeback with an item song with Sanjay Dutt in Zilla Ghaziabad. She admits she has waited long to sign a new film. “Three years is a very-long time in the entertainment industry. But it was a conscious decision. I had so many offers. It was very hard to turn them down. You can’t imagine the num- ber of films I’ve turned down in the last three years, including Golmaal Returns. Even the money was good. Everyone kept advising me, ‘Geeta, you have to be seen’. But I knew what I wanted. I had to wait. And I had no Godfather to guide me.” In three years, apart from other things, Geeta did a music video with Rahet Fateh Ali Khan. Geeta gets charged up at talking about her item song. “I love dancing. I always wanted to do an item song like Madhuri Dixit’s Ek do teen. In fact, I came down from London to Mumbai because I was inspired by Madhuri. I wanted at least five days to rehearse. But there was no time. I had to virtually get ready in a day. Luckily my choreographer Remo D’Souza is so calm. It’s so difficult to perform an item song. I don’t know how Madhuri made it look so effortless,” she said. The 50-year-old actor, who is currently dating former wrestler Stacy Keibler, has never had any desire to have children, as he is too dedicated to his career and knows he wouldn’t be able to give children priority. “I’ve always known fatherhood wasn’t for me. Raising kids is a huge commitment and has to be your top priority. For me, that priority is my work. That’s why I’ll never get married again,” he said. The Descendants actor, who was married to actress Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, also revealed that he has no plans to dye his greying hair and is embracing it instead. ACTOR Robert Pattinson and girlfriend Kristen Stewart have moved out of their Los Angeles house. The Twilight star couple had been renting a 240-square-metre property in the city’s exclusive Bel Air neighbourhood, but had to leave as the owner is putting it on the market at a price of $5.9 million, reports contactmusic.com. Pattinson, 25, and 21-yearold Stewart were believed to be paying $22,500 per month to stay in the four-bedroom, four-bathroom property. The home also features a high wood ceiling and hardwood floors, a spa, pool and a gazebo as well as a guest house with its own kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. Robert Downey and his wife, producer Susan Downey, are expecting a baby boy. The actor broke the news on NBC’s show, where he was promoting the upcoming Sherlock Holmes sequel. He told Leno that he wasn’t allowed to reveal the baby’s gender, but then blurted it out. “I am not permitted to discuss it. I can’t say a word,” he said, adding “We’re having a boy!” He then put his head in his hands and feigned horror, saying “Oh crap. I just said it.” As for how the pregnancy has been going, Downey joked that “it’s been tougher on me. Just the hormones the mood swings and the nausea, basically the whole thing.” When asked if he planned to be an involved father with his son, he said, “I suspect I will be.” The Downeys announced their pregnancy in August; this will be the couple’s first child together. The actor already has a son, 18year-old Indio, with ex-wife Deborah Falconer. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows opens on December 16. Susan Downey is one of the film’s producers. Downey also reprises his role of Iron Man for The Avengers, which hits theatres on May 4, 2012. Alec Baldwin 35 Robert Downey Jr (left) and his wife Susan Downey ICOLE Kidman was reported to throw a fit on the set of her new film, gaining her a new nickname, “Ice Princess.” The crew and staff of the new drama film Stoker gave Kidman her new alias after she threw an odd tantrum in the set. According to one of the crew, no one is even allowed to speak to her except for the primary cast members, the director and the producers. Apparently, Kidman was enraged after receiving a glass of water with ice in it and demanded that the glass be refilled with room temperature water. This new rumour spread like wildfire in the tabloids. Stoker is the story of a teenage girl who finds herself drawn, despite her suspicions, to her uncle, who moved in with her and her mother after her father died. Kidman plays the role of the emotionally unstable mother of the teenage girl. Kidman received different sorts of recognition for her superb acting. Last year, she was nominated for an Oscar for her heartwrenching portrayal of a mother who lost her son due to an accident in the film Rabbit Hole. Stoker is written by Wentworth Miller and directed by Park Chan Wook. It will also star Australian actresses Mia Wasikowska and Jacki Weaver. Nicole Kidman Alec Baldwin asked to leave flight for playing game TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK A CTOR Alec Baldwin was involved in a dispute with an American Airlines flight attendant on Tuesday and was asked to disembark an airplane because he was playing a smartphone word game before departure. “Alec was asked to leave the flight for playing ‘words with friends’ while parked at the gate. He loves ‘words with friends’ so much that he was willing to leave a plane for it, but he has already boarded another American Airlines flight,” Baldwin’s spokesman Matthew Hiltzik said in a statement. Baldwin took to Twitter with several posts addressing the incident, as well as supporting rival United Airlines. “Flight attendant on American Airlines reamed me out for playing Words with friends while we sat at the gate, not moving,” tweeted the 30 Rock actor. He also tweeted “Last flight with American Airlines. Where retired Catholic school gym teachers from the 1950’s find jobs as flight attendants.” Baldwin’s tweets and his spokesman’s statement came after a passenger on the flight from Los Angeles International Airport to New York City, posted on Twitter, “On an American Airlines flight. Alec Baldwin removed from the plane We had to go back to the gate. Terrible that everyone had to wait.” When Baldwin was escorted off the flight, he tweeted at 2pm: “Flight attendant on American reamed me out for playing a game on my phone. No wonder American Airlines is bankrupt.” Sixteen minutes later he tweeted, “There's always United.” And then said, “But, oddly, 30 Rock plays inflight on American.” At 2:35 pm, the airline (American Airlines) responded to Baldwin’s post saying, “Mr Baldwin, we are looking into the matter. Please send us your contact information.” A little later, Baldwin re-tweeted saying, “Now on the 3 o’clock American flight. The flight attendants already look smarter.” American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith says via e-mail that the airline doesn’t comment on such cases, citing its privacy policy for “customers, famous or not famous.” A law enforcement source confirmed the same. 36 Friday, December 9, 2011 SOUTHSCOPE www.qatar-tribune.com Scene unscene Thupaki flagged off Richa Gangopadhyay out of Bollywood THE high-profile Vijay-Murugadoss venture Thupaki has been flagged off.
