ULL down your lap bars:
Universal Studios, the theme
park chain now controlled by
Comcast, is rolling out new
weapons in its battle against
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts – and
Disney is fortifying its defenses.
Universal’s parks have always languished in the shadow of mouse ears, and
that will not change anytime soon. Disney
has eight parks in California and Florida
that attract over 73 million visitors each
year, with summer the busiest season.
Universal operates three parks, with
annual attendance totalling about 18 million.
But Universal is starting to look a lot
less puny. A $265 million Harry Potterthemed addition to its resort sent 2010
attendance soaring 30 percent over the
year before, draining attention from Walt
Disney World in the process. Universal is
now racing to replicate the attraction at
its parks in California and Japan while
expanding the boy wizard’s presence in
Orlando.
To maintain momentum, Universal –
with more Comcast money – is introducing a swarm of offerings. A major 3-D ride
themed to Michael Bay’s Transformers
movies opened last Friday at Universal
Studios Hollywood, at an estimated cost
of $100 million. New draws at Universal
Orlando include a refurbished SpiderMan ride, a lavish parade, a high-tech
fountain and pyrotechnics show, and a
P
ride based on Despicable Me.
“There is an incredible sense of energy
and forward motion around here, no
doubt about it,” said Thomas L Williams,
chief executive of Universal Parks &
Resorts.
Disney is watching all of this with a
clenched jaw. Although it has publicly dismissed a Potter-enhanced Universal as
not being even a remote threat, arguing
(accurately, analysts say) that a rising tide
in Orlando lifts all boats, Disney is privately concerned about preventing market share erosion on both coasts.
Competition with Universal, for
instance, factored into Disney’s decision
to beef up a previously planned expansion
to its Magic Kingdom park in Orlando and
spend an estimated $500 million on an
Avatar-themed addition to its nearby
Animal Kingdom park. The $425 million
Magic Kingdom expansion opens in phases starting this year. Avatar construction
is set to begin next year and open in 2015.
Design details are secret, but James
Cameron, who directed Avatar and is
working on two sequel, has said part of
the project will include a ride that simulates flight.
Theme parks represent one of the few
areas of stable growth outside of cable television for media and entertainment conglomerates like Comcast and Disney.
Parks can be vulnerable to swings in the
economy and require costly and continuous investments in new rides; escalating
labour costs threaten margins. But for a
media industry challenged by piracy, a
fading DVD business and broadcast net-

works that continue to struggle, parks
have emerged as a bright spot. Comcast’s
movie division, for instance, recorded
operating cash flow of only $6 million in
the most recent quarter; the current quarter is also looking troubled, with the costly Battleship taking in a weak $25.4 million in theatres over the weekend.
Comcast’s broadcast network, NBC,
recorded an operating cash flow loss of
$10 million in the recent quarter.
In contrast, Universal’s parks had operating cash flow of $157 million in the last
quarter, a 17 percent increase from the
same period a year ago. For 2011, the
parks
supplied
8
percent
of
NBCUniversal’s total revenue but made
up 20 percent of its total operating cash
flow, the second-largest contributor
behind cable television.
Disney reported similar results on May
8. While the company’s movie studio had
a loss of $84 million – mostly because of
a huge write-down for John Carter –
operating income at its theme parks
surged 53 percent, to $222 million.
The rivalry between the two parks operators, which dates to the late 1980s, when
Disney scrambled to open its Hollywood
Studios park here to beat Universal’s
planned arrival, next moves to California.
Universal
will
soon
open
its
Transformers ride; Disney will unveil a
$450 million Cars-themed addition to its
nearby California Adventure park on
June 15.
(Disney bid for the Harry Potter rights
but balked at the degree of creative control sought by the author JK Rowling; cost
was also an issue.)
Comcast gained control of the Universal
parks last year when it paid $13.75 billion
to General Electric for 51 percent of
NBCUniversal. Comcast quickly doubled
down on the business, spending $1 billion
to buy a stake in Universal Orlando
owned by the Blackstone Group. GE and
Blackstone were both more interested in
wringing cash from the parks than
expanding them; selling them entirely
was regularly on the table.
But Comcast is different. “We’re really
feeling the love,” said Williams,
Universal’s chief.
Comcast has increased spending on the
parks – by how much it won’t say – and is
betting on strong international growth.
Universal announced a deal in April to
open a park in Moscow by the end of the
decade. The company, which opened a
park in Singapore two years ago, also has
resorts in the works in South Korea and
Dubai; it is pursuing a deal in China.
Stephen B Burke, a Comcast executive
vice president and chief executive of the
NBCUniversal unit, spent over a decade
at Disney, working for part of that time as
a senior parks manager. Burke, who was
recently in Orlando to discuss plans to
promote Universal across the Comcast
empire, told analysts in a recent conference call that he was “very bullish” on the
theme park business.
“Comcast is pretty excited about spending money there because they see a lot of
potential growth,” said Doug Mitchelson,
a media analyst at Deutsche Bank.
Mitchelson estimates that Comcast will

spend $150 million a year on improvements for at least the next five years.
Universal’s previous owners in many
recent years kept spending at the basic
maintenance level, estimated at about
$50 million annually.
At the moment, Universal is particularly hopeful that Transformers will continue an upswing at Universal Studios
Hollywood, which is still best known for
its tram tour of the Universal Pictures
back lot, a feature that first opened in
1964. The Hollywood property in 2010
opened a new King Kong attraction and
attendance jumped 26 percent over the
year before.
The 3-D Transformers ride, which
ThemeParkInsider.com called “among
the very top rides in the world” in a
review, could move the needle again. The
attraction, which replaced an antiquated
one built around the 1991 film Backdraft,
was designed in conjunction with Bay and
takes riders on a (perceived) high-speed
adventure through the streets of Chicago,
where good alien robots are engaged in a
ferocious battle with evil ones. Riders
wearing 3-D glasses sit in motion simulators, which pivot, undulate and vibrate
while moving through a 60,000-squarefoot building on a track, stopping in front
of 14 screens that tower up to 60 feet in
the air. Transformers imagery is projected on the screens at four times the resolution of standard high-definition media,
making it seem that the robots are real as
they pull you into grinding gears, drag
you through a skyscraper and blast
weapons at your head.

FOOD
Make pickles and jams
to preserve produce
CATHY BARROW
NYT SYNDICATE
HE fruits and vegetables that seduce us
early in the season
make me greedy. I fall
hard and completely,
happy to lug home
cumbersome bags from the farmers’ market and create a still life on
my kitchen counter of big bunches
of vegetables and piles of berries. I
want to incorporate all of it into
every meal. I want to capture the
moment and bottle it.
And now is an excellent time.
Perhaps you have made freezer jam
or quick refrigerator pickles, those
red onions in vinegar, sugar and
salt. I’m hoping spring will tempt
you to try preservation, a fancy
word for canning, and like the act
itself, not as scary as it sounds.
Pickled spring onions and
asparagus
Time: 1 hour and 30 minutes
1 teaspoon whole coriander seeds
T
Sugar, lemon juice and vanilla are added to bowls of cut strawberries and diced rhubarb for strawberry rhubarb jam.
I’m
hoping spring
will tempt you to try
preservation, a fancy
word for canning, and
like the act itself, not
as scary as it
sounds
12 black peppercorns
4 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons red pepper
flakes
1 teaspoon yellow mustard seed
4 whole allspice berries
4 whole garlic cloves, peeled
2 pounds freshly picked asparagus about the diameter of a pencil
12 spring onions or scallions
12 garlic scapes or ramps
4 lemon slices
3 1/2 cups white vinegar
Method: 1. Fit a large pot with a
rack or line it with a folded kitchen
towel. Fill with water, and bring to
a boil. sterilise four one-pint canning jars. If boiling them, add jars
to the pot and boil for ten minutes.
The jars may be left in the dishwasher or pot until ready to be
filled.
2. Place a small skillet over
medium heat. Add the coriander
seeds and stir until lightly toasted
and fragrant. Divide equally
among the four jars. Repeat with
the peppercorns. To each jar add
one teaspoon kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon mustard seed, one allspice
berry and one clove of garlic.
3. Trim the asparagus, spring
onions and garlic scapes or ramps
to fit the height of the jars, leaving
1/2-inch head space. Set aside the
trimmed pieces for another use. Fit
everything into the jars snugly.
Tuck a lemon slice into each jar.
4. Place the canning rings in a
small saucepan, cover with water
and bring to a boil. Turn off the
heat and add the lids to soften the
rubber gaskets.
5. In a medium saucepan, combine the vinegar with three 1/2
cups water. Bring to a boil and funnel into the jars, leaving 1/2 inch of
space at the top. Thoroughly wipe
the rims of the jars. Using tongs,
remove the lids from the hot water,
place them on the jars, and screw
the rings on snugly but not too
tightly.
6. Return the large pot of water
to a rolling boil. Gently ease the
filled jars upright into the water;
the water should be at least two
inches above the jars. Boil the jars
for 15 minutes, then transfer to a
kitchen towel to cool. Listen for the
ping that comes from the contracting lid, indicating a secure seal.
7. When the jars are completely
cool, remove the ring and test the
seal by lifting the jar by the lid. If
the seal fails, refrigerate the jar
and use the contents within six
weeks. Allow the pickles to mature
for one month before serving.
Yield: 4 pints.
Strawberry Rhubarb confitures
Time: 2 hours of preparation,
plus 6 to 12 hours for macerating
and several hours for cooling
2 pints (about 2 pounds) fresh
strawberries, stemmed and cut
into bite-size pieces
2 1/2 pounds rhubarb, trimmed
and cut into 1/2-inch dice
3 cups sugar
Juice of one lemon
1 vanilla bean
1/4 teaspoon butter
Method: 1. In a large nonreactive bowl, combine the strawberries, rhubarb, sugar and lemon
juice.
Split
the vanilla
bean lengthwise and scrape out the
pulp. Add the pulp and bean to the
bowl. Mix gently but thoroughly.
Cover, refrigerate and allow fruit
to macerate six to 12 hours.
2. Fit a large pot with a rack or
line it with a folded kitchen towel.
Fill with water and bring to a boil.
sterilise six half-pint canning jars by
running them through a dishwasher cycle. If boiling them, add jars to
the pot and boil for ten minutes.
The jars may be left in the dishwasher or pot until ready to be
filled.
3. Strain the liquid out of the
berry mixture into a heavy-bottomed large pot. Allow liquid to
drain for a few minutes, pressing on
the fruit. Set the fruit aside. Place
the pot over medium-low heat and
slowly bring the syrup to 220
degrees Fahrenheit on a candy thermometer. If your pan is broad and
the syrup is not very deep, tilt the
pan frequently and place the candy
thermometer deep into the syrup,
to measure the temperature more
effectively. This could take about 45
minutes. Stir frequently.
4. Place the canning rings in a
small saucepan, cover with water
and bring to a boil. Turn off the heat
and add the lids to soften the rubber
gaskets.
5. Remove the vanilla bean from
the fruit and stir the fruit into the
syrup. Watch the bubbles in the boil
as you stir. Foam will form because
the water in the fruit is drawn out,
to be replaced with the syrup. In
about ten minutes, when the confiture is almost ready, the foam will
begin to dissipate, the bubbles
breaking more slowly and exposing
a clear syrup below.
6. Turn off the heat. Let the bubbling stop. The fruit should have
absorbed the syrup and be suspended through the jam. If the fruit is
floating, return it to the heat for
another minutes of boiling.
7. Some foam may remain in the
syrup; add the butter and stir to dispel the last of the bubbles. Ladle the
hot preserves into the warm jars,
leaving 1/4 inch at the top, just
below the first ring on the jar’s neck.
Wipe the rims of the jars clean with
a damp towel. Place the lids, rubber
gasket down, facing the glass rim;
tighten the rings, and lower the jars
into the stockpot of boiling water.
Return to a full boil and boil the jars
for ten minutes.
8. Transfer the jars to a folded
towel to cool for several hours; you
should hear them making a pinging
sound as they seal.
9. Test the seals by removing
the rings and lifting the jars by the
flat lid. If the lid releases, the seal
has not formed. Unsealed jars
should be refrigerated and used
within a month or reprocessed.
Rings and the jars may be reused,
but a new flat lid must be used
each time jars are processed.
Reheat preserves to the boiling
point, then continue as before.
And relax: If your preserves are
on the runny side, just call them
syrup and serve warm over pancakes.
Yield: 6 half-pint jars.

Living large in 133 square feet
WILLIAM PORTER
NYT SYNDICATE
OME homeowners prefer the
sprawl of suburban McMansions.
Others opt for
cozy old bungalows near city centres.
Not too many opt for a
133-square-foot home – you
read that correctly – that on
first glance looks not much
larger than a Great Dane’s
doghouse.
But Christopher Smith
and Merete Mueller did just
that. The Boulder couple
built a 7-by-19-foot wooden
house whose foundation is a
two-axle trailer bed. Last
week, they towed it to a 5acre patch of isolated hillside 20 minutes outside this
town, which sits on South
Park’s eastern edge.
Smith and Mueller are
part of the “tiny house’’
movement, a coterie of
urban
and
ex-urban
thinkers experimenting with
super-scaled-down living.
While the couple will use the
pint-sized house as a getaway cabin for now, thanks
to jobs in Boulder, living in it
full-time is a future possibility.
“People ask us why we
didn’t buy a single-wide
trailer, but we wanted something that really felt like a
home,’’ Mueller said on a
recent afternoon at the
house. “It made us really pay
attention to good design, the
use of space and how it sets
the mood of a place.’’
Smith, 30, who grew up
around Washington, DC, is a
graphic designer and programmer who does video
projects on the side.
Mueller, 27, and a Boston
native, has a background in
writing and business management.
The impetus for building
the house came last spring.
Smith was set to graduate
with a master’s degree from
the University of Colorado
Denver and his 30th birthday loomed.
“I wasn’t so much freaking
out as figuring out what to
do after grad school,’’ Smith
said. “It felt like time to do a
bucket list. I always wanted
a cabin in the mountains.
Why should I work all my
life and wait to do it when
I’m retired?’’
He began doing Google
searches for cheap Colorado
land. Hartsel always came
up. The couple found the lot
and swung a deal.
Construction began in
May.
Smith
and
Mueller
brought little in the way of
contractor skills to the project. So plenty of Internet
consultation and talks with
people who had done similar
projects ensued.
“And we spent a lot of time
at Home Depot,’’ Mueller
said.
The result is a charmer, a
good thing in a small package, even if its size would
make Laura Ingalls Wilder
feel that her little house on
the prairie was Windsor
Palace.
The house’s interior and
exterior walls are made from
beetle-kill pine. The flooring
S
is recycled timber, and it’s
insulated by soy-based
spray-foam
insulation.
Seven windows afford a
360-degree view. You can
see the gleaming, corrugated
steel roof from miles away as
you wend your way across
the valley to the house.
There is a sofa and bookshelves, and a sleeping loft
accessed by a ladder. The
loft is snug: Sit bolt upright
in bed at 3 am, you’ll see
stars on a cloudy night,
guaranteed.
The house, supplied with
electricity from solar panels,
features a composting toilet.
They have to truck in water
by the jug, since the land has
no well yet. A two-burner
stove serves the kitchen. A
propane-fuelled stove, the
kind found on sailboats, provides heat. Bathing will be
done under a sun-heated
camp-style shower.
Smith and Mueller
are part of the
“tiny house’’
movement, a
coterie of urban
and ex-urban
thinkers
experimenting with
scaled-down living
The tiny-house movement
arose several years ago,
fuelled by the confluence of
interest in “greener’’ living
and the economic crash.
There are perhaps 1,000
such houses in the country,
all under 150 square feet in
space.
Some tiny-house owners
seek to live off the grid, or at
least lightly. Others, often
younger and footloose, are
lured by the novelty. All are
drawn by the low cost,
although cheapness isn’t
reflected in square-footage
costs.
Smith reckons they spent
between $20,000 and
$25,000 on the house, with
the trailer foundation
accounting for $5,000 of
that. Even if you factor in
the 50-square-foot sleeping
loft, the house cost roughly
$110 to $138 per square
foot to build. Industry averages for standard homes
run $80-$110.
“You don’t get an economy
of scale in a tiny house,’’
Smith said.
But Smith and Mueller
were driven by the urge to
have a cabin in the great outdoors. Now they do.
Sitting on its front
porch, you gaze out at the
Tarryall Mountains rising
10 miles to the north.
Squint hard, and you
might be able to glimpse
the back of beyond.The
couple is also making a
documentary on the tinyhouse movement, with
their own in a starring role.
“We’ve talked about holding an open house,’’ Mueller
said. ‘’Everyone can come up
here and stay in tents.’’

Deepika dons racy swimsuit for Vogue
Zarine to endorse educational institution
HER red bikini act in the promo of Cocktai” is already the talk of Btown. And now actress Deepika Padukone has flaunted her washboard abs and perfect figure in a chic swimsuit for the cover of fashion magazine Vogue. She raises the heat with the black, orange and
pink swimsuit which gives a sneak peek of her fit frame through skinrevealing, geometric cuts. In the June issue of the magazine, the 26year-old has shared her secrets on how to get Bollywood’s best body.
For the spicy cover, she has donned minimal make-up and accessories, and makes a strong statement of being at ease with her body,
through her pose. Deepika, last seen in Desi Boyz, will next be seen
in Cocktail with her Love Aaj Kal co-star Saif Ali Khan.
AFTER working in the successful fun-filled film Housefull 2,
actor Zarine Khan will soon be seen promoting education.
Samalkha Group of Institution (SGI) has roped Zarine as their
brand ambassador and the actress says that she finds the goal
of the SGI and her life the same. “As a person I have always
worked towards excellence. In SGI group, I see the same commitment towards their students, faculty and external stake
holders,” the 25-year-old said in a statement. “Moreover, I
relate to their Mission, to serve every segment of the society
and improve the quality of life through excellence and leadership in engineering and management education” she added.

CTOR Akshay Kumar is
gearing up for the release
of his new film Rowdy
Rathore and says that the
action sequences have a
very raw quality to them, something
which he hasn’t done for a long time.
“(Director) Prabhu Deva has his
own way of choreographing action
sequences. His action sequences have
a rhythm. It is a very raw kind of
action, which I haven’t done since
ages,” Akshay said while promoting
his film Rowdy Rathore that will be
out today.
The promos show Akshay sporting a
rugged look. His wardrobe is also
colourful and bright - he is seen in
check shirts worn over T-shirt. For the
rowdy look, he even wears a moustache.
Asked about the inspiration behind
the look, he said: “There is no inspiration as such, there is a rowdiness in
everyone. I have just been what I am
in real life.”
Of late filmmakers have been working on sequels, some plan it even

out waiting for its fate at the box

So, when asked Akshay if a sequel of
Rowdy Rathore is on cards, he said: “I
am not the producer of the film but if
the producer plans to make it and we
get the right script, we would love to
make it.”

that she is not bold

Sonakshi said.

And the actress is in no rush
to change her image.
“I am not waiting to get a role

more westernised and my character is good I won’t mind
doing it. Right now I am happy

Theron loves changing diapers
Kunis won’t quit Family Guy
ACTRESS Charlize Theron says she loves changing diapers
since adopting son Jackson. The 36-year-old adopted the baby
two months ago when he was just nine days old. “I love it! I’ve
got to tell you, I’m available for other babies’ diapers to be
changed. I can do it in my sleep now. I am so good,” femalefirst.co.uk quoted Theron as saying. Theron also says she
trained herself in dressing her child in international styles of
nappies after taking him on the press tour for her film. “I now
know how to change a Japanese diaper, a Spanish diaper, an
English diaper, a German diaper. I’m like the diaper pro now,”
she added.
ACTRESS Mila Kunis, who has been voicing
cartoon character Meg Griffin for animated comedy series Family Guy for the past decade, says
she’s not going to quit this show despite her
hectic career. “I hope Family Guy stays on the
air for the rest of my life,” showbizspy.com
quoted the-28-year-old as saying. “I love going
to do that. I go in sweatpants and sometimes I
don’t even go in I just do it at whatever location
I am at. It is amazing and I love it. I’ll never
give it up,” she said.

Baywatch’s Hasselhoff to the
fore in Piranha 3-DD
REUTERS
FAMILIAR face on TV since the
1980s, David Hasselhoff takes his
act to movie screens on Friday in
horror comedy Piranha 3-DD,
which puts “the Hoff” back in
familiar fashion - in a bathing suit with a bevy
of bikini-clad friends.
Channelling his Baywatch character Mitch
Buchannon, Hasselhoff makes an opening day
guest appearance at a water park in the movie
just as flesh-eating piranha move in for the
kill. The film is a sequel to 2010 surprise success Piranha 3D.
Hasselhoff talked about his new movie
and recalled his Baywatch days. He
executive produced the TV series
about beach lifeguards, overseeing
tight budgets that sometimes left
insufficient tape to shoot a scene.
His solution was to shoot girls in
bikinis in slow motion. It became
the show’s signature and made
him a fortune.
In 2007, the 59-year-old actor
fell under the media’s harsh
glare for his infamous “cheeseburger video” taped by his
daughter. In it, an obviously
drunk Hasselhoff tries to eat a
burger off the floor of a hotel
room. Over the years, he has
sought help for drinking
and mended fences with his
daughters.
Until
this
season,
Hasselhoff was a judge on
popular
TV
contest
America’s Got Talent, but
by taking a role on Piranha
3-DD, he is angling for more
time on the big screen. The
film’s
producers,
The
Weinstein Co, own rights to
Knight Rider, the TV show
that launched Hasselhoff’s
career, and there has long been
talk around Hollywood about a
film version of that program.
“I have no idea what’s going to go
on,” Hasselhoff said when asked
about a Knight Rider movie. “All I
know is they were very happy
with what I did in the movie,” he
said.
Here, Hasselhoff discusses
Piranha 3-DD, the cheeseburger, girls in bikinis, and
what it’s like being “the Hoff.”
like anybody else. It was really about my
daughters. So they brought us together, and in
the end maybe that’s why that happened.”
A
David
Hasselhoff
Q: How did you get
involved with Piranha 3-DD? Did
they come to you or did you pursue
the role?
A: “I saw Piranha and my stunt double did
You took a big gamble executive producing Baywatch when the network
dropped it after only one season. What
made you think it was going to fly?
“The first trailer. The budget on the show
originally was $1.2 million and we only had
$800,000. That’s why all those montages came
in. One day, we didn’t have enough footage, so
I said, ‘Go shoot that girl. That’s beautiful.’
They came back and I said, ‘Shoot it in slow
motion.’ We shot the beginning in slow motion
because we didn’t have any money. In the end,
it made us lots of money. We just would find
anybody who looked really good and shoot
them in slow motion.”
David Hasselhoff in a scene from the film
Piranha 3-DD.
Hasselhoff was a judge on
popular TV contest
America’s Got Talent, but
by taking a role on Piranha
3-DD, he is angling for more
time on the big screen
all the stunts on it. I really kind of liked it. I
think it was because the girls were hot and the
stunts were good, and I knew my stunt double
was underwater, holding all the girls down. He
had a lot of fun playing with naked girls and
drowning them.”
So you went after the role?
“I went up and met Bob Weinstein, (cochairman of The Weinstein Co) and he’s like,
‘You gotta do this movie. It’ll be great!’ I got to
play my character dark and that’s what I wanted to do: ‘Oh my God, what’s happened to my
career? Not only am I in this stupid movie, I’m
not going to make any rescues!’ That was the
fun part about doing it.”
Your character experiences a career
low. You had a career low a couple of
years back with the infamous ‘cheeseburger video.’ What did you take away
from that?
“My first impression was what a feeding
frenzy the press had and what a feeding frenzy
all the people that supported me for so many
years in the news agencies, the Entertainment
Tonight’s, and how they all were bidding for
this private moment that was between me and
my daughter. Wow! What a brutal business. It
was wrong what the media did, not to me but
to my daughter. It wasn’t about drinking or
sobering up. I didn’t have nearly a problem
How long did it take you to cast Pamela
Anderson?
“She walked into the room and I said, ‘Sign
her.’ She’s got charisma absolutely dripping off
her. I immediately said, ‘Sign her, sign her,
sign her, sign her, sign her.’”
You had a hit single in 1989 with
Looking for Freedom. How amazing
was singing at the Berlin Wall before it
came down?
“They asked me to sing and I said, ‘Only if I
can sing on the wall.’ They said, ‘We’ll have to
get the Chancellor from Germany, Helmut
Kohl and Honecker from East Germany to
agree.’ And they both did! It was the most
amazing moment of my life. I went back last
year and on New Years Eve, I recreated the
same moment and there were one million people there. They were all singing Looking for
Freedom at midnight.”
So you came full circle after just over 20
years. You seem to keep an even keel
through it all.
“Once you realise that life isn’t fair and people aren’t fair and things aren’t going to happen the way you want them to happen, you
just gotta go with the flow, keep moving forward. And you gotta laugh at it. My God, my
life is amazing. I’m 59-years-old, and I’m
hanging out with LMFAO. I just did a video for
Train and for some reason I still got this amazing amount of following. I don’t know why. I
just go with the
flow.”
Blake Lively to stay happily
unemployed by the end of 2012
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
HE actress, 24, will begin
shooting the sixth and final
season of The CW’s Gossip
Girl this summer, ending
her reign as the Upper East Side’s
resident tabloid queen Serena van
der Woodsen.
“It’ll be bittersweet when it’s over
because it gave me all of this. I think
the best way to describe it is like
someone who really enjoyed high
school, and is like, ‘I’m a senior and I
can’t wait for the next thing!’” she
said. “Gossip Girl was so great, but
T
what’s the next challenge in life?
Because, you know, six years is a long
time.”
Lively adds: “As an actor who plays
a caricature of myself on the show, I
don’t think I’d say, ‘Watch Gossip
Girl for my best quality of work.’ But
I am very lucky to have had that
experience.’”
The actress who is currently dating
her Green Lantern costar, Ryan
Reynolds, 35 says she’s looking forward to fluffing out her resume,
beginning with her role in director
Oliver Stone’s Savages.
“To play a blond California girl who
gets along with two men was scary. If
it looks like me and talks like me,
how do I turn it into something different? It would have been easier if
I’d been thrown into the movie with a
Scottish accent and purple hair.”
Though she might alienate a few
Gossip Girl fans with her new
movie, Lively isn’t worried. “I’m not
in the business of trying to win the
approval of my cast members, my
director or my audience,” she said.
“If I were, I’d be so beaten down by
insecurity that I’d never be able to
perform. The only person I’m trying
to prove something to is myself.”

‘Meera Jasmine is still single’
MEERA Jasmine is irked at reports in certain sections of the media,
which claimed that she married boyfriend Mandolin Rajesh, who is a
popular musician, at a hush-hush wedding recently. "There is no need
for Meera to go for a secret wedding and Rajesh too will not be interested in something like it. When they tie the knot, they will announce
it openly and there will be no secret in it," say sources close to the
actress. They add, "She feels bad that the media often carries false
reports on her without checking the facts. Her marriage will take
place with blessings from elders from both the families." Meera, who
started her Kollywood career with Lingusamy directed Run opposite
Madhavan, was last seen in Mambattiyan opposite Prashanth.
VARIETY is the spice of life for actor
Prithviraj, who loves to experiment. He has
tested waters in Kollywood and is now getting
ready for his Bollywood release. Quiz him on
whether he would like to explore any other
industries, and he says, “I would like to
explore good cinema.” He adds that, any cinema which is appealing to him as an actor is
good cinema for him.

Haripriya prepares to
take on detractors
“This is the work of a few people in the

actress
Haripriya, who found
herself in the midst of a
controversy recently.
Her house was raided, thanks
to her alleged closeness to B S
Vijayendra, son of former
Karnataka chief minister
Yeddyurappa. However, the
actress, feels it is a group of
people from the Kannada film
industry, who may have been
responsible in framing her.
“This is the work of a few people in the Kannada film industry, who are jealous of the kind
of work that I have managed to
do. They can’t digest the fact
that I’m getting to work in all
four South Indian film industries. It can’t be anyone from
the other three industries, as
people here have only encouraged me and are happy to see
me grow as an actress,” says
Haripriya.

strange how all kinds of
rumours crop up just
when it is time for films to
hit the screens.
For

in
Sandalwood, I have a film
with Srinagar Kitty coming
up soon. My Malayalam film
has also hit the screens.
Though, once I am done with
my promotional tours, I will

the controversy. My friends and

the truth. They are my source of

Malayalam film Bhadrasanam.
Her Kannada films include

Bala turns director with Hit List
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
CTOR-TURNED-DIRECTOR Bala is
working overtime these days.
Through his directorial debut,
tentatively titled Hit List, Bala is
determined to make a difference.
“This is certainly going to be a
milestone in my career. I was
born into a family which started
its association with the film
industry decades ago and movies
are my life. It has given me financial stability and a celebrity status.
The fact that our production company
is producing this movie makes it all the
more special,” says Bala.
The actor has been part of almost 40
movies in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, yet
he feels his talent has not been fully exploited. “I am not satisfied with the kind of roles
A
that I am getting these days. I want to show
what I am capable of with this movie, which
is going to be entirely different in its treatment,” he
says.
However,
the
change has not
been easy, says the
actor. “It is only
after you turn
director that you
realise how pampered one is as an
actor. It is so much
more hectic now, I am
B al a
busy 24x7. These days I get
to sleep just three hours a day,”
says Bala.
Bala promises to take cinema to the next
level with this film. “The movie will, of
course, have action sequences, a love story,
songs and lot of suspense. Yet there will be
a novelty in its treatment. Even the stunt
sequences will be more rugged and realistic. The movie is going to be a twohour chase. This is not a money making business for me. I leave all that
to destiny and God. When I
planned this project I thought I will
have a big launch. But later I
thought I will concentrate on the
work and not in creating any hype,”
he says.
With big names like Prithviraj
and Unni Mukundan making a
guest appearance, Bala insists that
they are in the movie not just for the
star value. “I have not included any
element that is not integral to the
movie.” Kannada actor Dhruv and
Aishwarya Devan play pivotal roles in
the film.
