LOOKS TO LIFE

Chelsea Handler got her big break by
first doing stand-up comedy. Since
then, she has performed nationwide
to sold out audiences. Chelsea is a

Nine contenders for Best Picture
MICHAEL CIEPLY & BROOKS BARNES
NYT SYNDICATE
CHAOTIC Oscar season
found a bit order on
Tuesday, as The Artist, a
mostly silent tribute to
old Hollywood, and
Hugo, another bit of film
nostalgia, joined The Descendants,
about life and love in Hawaii, and
Midnight in Paris, about literary Paris,
in scoring an array of major nominations, including those for best picture
and best director.
In a field of 9 best-picture nominees
— the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences pegged the number on a
sliding scale after experimenting for two
years with a list of 10 — The Help, about
race relations, War Horse, about a
fighting horse, Moneyball, about the
business side of baseball, and two surprises, The Tree of Life and Extremely
Loud & Incredibly Close, all found a
place. But none showed quite as strong
as the leaders.
And a host of erstwhile contenders
finally fell away, at least in the race for
best picture at the 84th Academy
Awards ceremony, set for February 26.
The also-rans included Jason
Reitman’s Young Adult and George
Clooney’s Ides of March, and another
half-dozen films that were shaken out by
a tough round of Hollywood guild awards,
and a revised Oscar balloting system.
New procedures in the best picture
race were designed to nominate movies
that garnered a significant core of number one votes, rather than a host of votes
for second or third place.
In a seeming disconnect, only one
best actress nominee, Viola Davis of The
Help, appeared in a film nominated for
best picture. Other nominees in the category were Glenn Close, for playing a
woman who played a man in Albert
Nobbs; Meryl Streep, as Britain’s
Margaret Thatcher, both in and past her
prime, in The Iron Lady; Rooney Mara,
as the damaged soul in The Girl With
the Dragon Tattoo; and Michelle
Williams, as Marilyn Monroe in My
Week With Marilyn.
Streep’s nomination cemented her
position as the most-nominated actor in
Academy Awards history, with 17 nominations — far more than the next-most
nominated, Jack Nicholson and
Katharine Hepburn, with 12 each.
Streep last won an Oscar in 1983, for
best actress for Sophie’s Choice, and she
was previously best supporting actress,
for Kramer vs Kramer, in 1980.
Among the best actor nominees,
Clooney (The Descendants), Jean
Dujardin (The Artist) and Brad Pitt
(Moneyball) appeared in films that have
now edged within reach of a best picture
Oscar. Demian Bechir, who played an
A
By the numbers, this year’s most
heavily nominated Oscar contenders
are Hugo, with 11, followed closely by
The Artist, with 10. Moneyball and War
Horse each have 6 nominations,
whereas The Descendants,
though strong in the acting,
writing, and directing
categories, has only 5
illegal immigrant gardener in A Better
Life, and Gary Oldman, a spy hunter in
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, were also
nominated.
Snubs on the actors list included
Leonardo DiCaprio for J Edgar, and
Michael Fassbender for Shame. Both
films sizzled into the season amid
supercharged publicity, but wound up
with no nominations in the major categories.
Similarly, Bridesmaids, a popular
favourite whose cast of female comics
was nominated for an ensemble award
from the Screen Actors Guild, fell flat
with just two major nominations, one
for Melissa McCarthy, as best supporting actress, and another for an original
screenplay written by Kristen Wiig and
Annie Mumolo.
Other supporting actress nominations went to Berenice Bejo for The
Artist; both Jessica Chastain and
Octavia Spencer for The Help; and
Janet McTeer for Albert Nobbs.
Supporting actor nominees were
Kenneth Branagh for My Week With
Marilyn; Nick Nolte for Warrior;
Jonah Hill for Moneyball; and Max von
Sydow for Extremely Loud & Incredibly
Close.
Conventional
wisdom
among
Hollywood’s Oscar campaigners says
the best director nominations help to
identify the real contenders for best picture, by culling out movies whose filmmakers did not quite make the cut.
By that standard, The Help, a vastly
popular movie with Oscar-friendly
themes — about racial bias and
conciliation — has a problem, as
its director, the relative newcomer Tate Taylor, was snubbed.
So was Steven Spielberg, as the
director of War Horse, another
best picture nominee.
Instead, the directing nominations
went
to
Michel
Hazanavicius for The Artist;
Alexander Payne for The
Descendants; Woody
Allen for Midnight in
Paris; and Martin
Scorsese for Hugo,
along with Terrence
Malick for The Tree of Life. Only
Hazanavicius has not previously been
nominated in the category.
Scorsese, named best director in 2007
for The Departed, had perhaps the
warmest reception of anyone at the
Golden Globes this month: He received
an award for directing Hugo to an outpouring of applause that marked him
as someone beloved and admired
here.
Allen, by contrast, did not appear
to pick up his Globe for writing
Midnight in Paris. So none can say
whether he, too, would have
sparked the kind of Globes-night
enthusiasm that foretold an Oscar
win for Jeff Bridges, another
Hollywood favourite, in 2010.
By the numbers, this year’s most
heavily nominated Oscar contenders
were Hugo, with 11, followed closely by
The Artist, with 10. Moneyball and War
Horse each had 6 nominations, while
The Descendants, though strong in the
acting, writing, and directing categories,
had only 5.
In fact, a large stack of nominations
can sometimes be the Academy’s way of
acknowledging a very good film that
hasn’t really won its heart.
Last year, True Grit had 10 nominations, including best picture, and
ranked just below The King’s Speech,
the eventual winner, but took home
nothing on Oscar night. The Aviator
and Brokeback Mountain were the
most heavily nominated films in their
years, but weren’t winners.
The shockers this year, included the
fact that the best picture category
stretched all the way to 9 of a possible 10
nominees. Oscar-watchers widely predicted that the new counting methods
would yield a narrower field.
The biggest surprise in the group was
almost surely Extremely Loud &
Incredibly Close, a drama revolving
around the aftermath of the 9/11 terror
attacks. The film had been snubbed in
one after another of the pre-Oscar
awards, though its backers, including the producer Scott Rudin,
insisted that a devoted core of
admirers might turn the film,
directed by Stephen Daldry,
into a best picture contender.
The Academy’s challenge
this year is to win over viewers who have not yet warmed
to the movies that will be on
display when the ceremony is
broadcast on ABC. Among
the best picture nominees,
only The Help, which had
almost $170 million in North
American ticket
sales (and just
$36
million
elsewhere) has crossed the $100 million
mark at the domestic box office.
If the movies lack drawing power, the
Oscar host, Billy Crystal, is known, at
least, for having presided over some of
the Academy’s most heavily viewed ceremonies, including a 1998 show. That
one ran an epic three hours and 47 minutes, but drew a record 57.3 million
viewers, as Titanic was named best picture. Last year’s ceremony, with hosts
James Franco and Anne Hathaway, and
more than 30 minutes shorter, drew
only about 37.6 million viewers.
Crystal, whose screen appearances
have been few of late, stepped in after
Eddie Murphy dropped out last
November, following the sudden resignation of the Hollywood bad-boy Brett
Ratner as one of the show’s producers.
Ratner had caused a stir for some sex
talk on the radio. He was quickly
replaced by Brian Grazer, a veteran film
producer who has largely refrained
from public discussion of his plans for
the show, in an effort to preserve some
surprise in the proceedings.
In Tuesday’s nominations, the surprises included a rare rebuff of Pixar
and its chief creative officer, John
Lasseter. Cars 2, which Lasseter directed, was not among the animation nominees, which in the past have been dominated by Pixar films like Ratatouille,
Wall-E and The Incredibles.
Rival DreamWorks Animation had
two animated nominees, Kung Fu
Panda 2 and Puss in Boots. Also nominated were Rango, from Paramount
Pictures, and A Cat in Paris and Chico &
Rita, both from abroad.
Among companies, a big winner was
Sony Pictures, which had at least 20
nominations for films from both its
major studio and its Sony Pictures
Classics art-house division. Those nominees included Midnight in Paris and
Moneyball in the best picture category,
and a number of nominations for The
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and A
Separation.
Both Paramount and the Weinstein
Company had more than a dozen nominations each, and Disney — though it
hadn’t been an Oscar powerhouse of
late — had at least 10 nominations,
including those for War Horse and The
Help, which were made by its affiliate,
DreamWorks.
While 9 of the top 10 films at the
domestic box office last year were sequels
— an unprecedented alignment — only a
handful of such follow-up films made an
impression on the Academy. Harry
Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,
the year’s best-selling film, with $1.3 billion in worldwide ticket sales, was nominated only for its art direction, makeup
and visual effects, despite an aggressive
billboard and radio campaign that highlighted its awards potential.

Eight kitchen tools you didn’t
know you needed
KATHRYN WEBER
TRIBUNE MEDIA SERVICES
ETTING
a
meal on the
table can be a
challenge, but
having some
tools
that
make it easier is a real plus.
While there are plenty of
flashy new kitchen gadgets on
the market, many of the
standbys are also worth a second look. Every cook should
consider the following:
1. Immersion blender.
Vegetable based soups,
like cream of spinach,
come together in a
snap with an
immersion
blender. This
handheld
blender goes
right into the
pot and with a
push of a button, creates a
s m o o t h ,
creamy soup. At
around $25, it’s
an inexpensive yet
indispensable tool.
2. Cast iron crockpot.
The cast iron lined deluxe
crockpot by All-Clad runs
around $250, but it makes
crock pot cooking faster
because browning can be
done in the liner on top of the
stove and transferred to the
crockpot, saving time and
cleanup.
G

5. Cast iron skillets.
Grandma knew that for fried
foods and baked items, a cast
iron skillet could do it all. Cast
iron’s thickness means it
doesn’t heat too quickly and
burn food, yet maintains its
temperature, which is so
important for frying. These
skillets give you perfectly
browned food and can’t be
beat for biscuits, corn bread,
and perfectly glazed pineapple upside down cake.
6. Microfibre drying mats.
Cast iron crockpot
Running out of space on the
counter for handwashing
dishes and pans? Whip out
these handy mats when you
need more drying space. They
can be tossed in the washer,
too, for quick cleaning.

mats
3. Appetiser plates. These
dainty dishes can do double
duty for hors d’oeuvres, small
dishes and sauces.
4. Long-handled spoons.
While they may have the
charm and feel of a school
cafeteria, these spoons are so
useful and practical that you’ll
wonder how you lived without them. Buy a long-style
serving spoon, sometimes
called a basting spoon, to stir
tall pots, baste roasts and
turkeys, and keep you at a
safe distance from hot sugar
when you’re cooking candy.
Long-handled
spoons
7. Personal blenders. Small
personal blenders that come
with serving cups make fast
work of blended shakes and
smoothies. They’re also ideal
for whipping up fresh salad
dressings and sauces.
8. Cheap tongs. They may
not be pretty, but inexpensive
tongs are workhorses in the
kitchen. Light and easy to use,
every kitchen should have
three or four sets. Tongs are
ideal for picking up salad,
turning chicken, lifting hot
items and serving. Get a long
pair or two for grilling.

A view from outer space
We bring you some of the
most fascinating pictures
from the outer space
Smokey Omega
NYT SYNDICATE
SMOKEY OMEGA
Bright newborn stars glisten like dew in the rosy-hued core
of M17, also called the Omega nebula. This newly released picture, from the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large
Telescope, is one of the sharpest views of Omega yet taken
from the ground.
The nebula’s dark dust and glowing gas are the raw materials for star formation, and Omega is one of the most active stellar nurseries for massive stars in the Milky Way.
As seen in this visible-light image, the nebula’s hydrogen gas
glows red to our eyes because it’s being illuminated by intense
ultraviolet radiation from the hot, young stars inside. This
may be one reason another popular name for M17 is the
Lobster nebula.
SUN SPOUT
In late December an
active region on the sun
spewed dozens of outbursts
over a 36-hour period,
including the bright flare
and spout of plasma –
charged gas – seen in this
video still from NASA’s
Solar
Dynamics
Observatory.
The action was driven by strong magnetic forces on the sun’s
surface, which can pull against each other violently, triggering
bursts of solar material that get hurled into space.
DUSTY CIGAR
A new picture from the
Hubble Space Telescope is
the most detailed view yet of
the core of M82, also called
the Cigar galaxy. This tubular galaxy sits about 12 million light-years away in the
constellation Ursa Major.
The colorised picture
combines data from filters
that let through light only
from specific elements. In
this case, the image shows light from gaseous sulfur (red), oxygen (green and blue), and hydrogen (cyan). That’s why, in this
image, darker dust lanes are silhouetted against the brightly
glowing gas, while the galaxy’s stars appear faint.
HOLLOWED GROUND
A newly released picture
from NASA’s MESSENGER
spacecraft shows a collection
of landforms called hollows
around the central peaks of
the impact crater Eminescu
on the planet Mercury.
Hollows – shallow depressions sometimes surrounded
by highly reflective material –
were first described on
Mercury last fall. Scientists think the unusual landforms could
be evidence that tiny Mercury is still geologically active.
MARTIAN FLOWER
Like a forget-me-not in a
field of snow, a small, bluish
volcano pops up from the pale
flanks of a larger one in
Mars’s Cerberus region, as
seen in a colorised picture
from
NASA’s
Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter.
This region of Mars is dominated by the Cerberus Fossae
troughs, long fissures on the
red planet created when faults
pulled apart the crust during the formation of the nearby
Elysium volcanic field.
The smaller volcano’s vent is aligned with one of these
troughs, and ancient flows radiating away from the vent help
give the peak its floral appearance.
WIDE SHADOWS
Saturn’s moon Tethys seems to
hover under the planet’s rings in a
newly released picture from NASA’s
Cassini orbiter. Due to the angle of
sunlight, the rings cast dark, wide
shadows across the planet that help
underscore the midsize moon.
Named for a Greek sea goddess,
Tethys was discovered in the late 1600s by Italian-French
astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini. Seen up close, the icy
moon is heavily cratered and crisscrossed by troughs.

I’m humbled, says Shabana after Padma
Bhushan
RENOWNED ghazal and bhajan singer Anup Jalota is delighted
to be recognised with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest
civilian honour, for his contribution to the world of semi-classical
music. “I am very happy. I want to thank the government of
India for recognising me and giving me the award,” Jalota said.
The veteran singer has been honoured with the Padma Shri. In
his career of over three decades, Jalota has recorded over 2,000
bhajans, ghazals and songs. Some of his popular bhajans
include Aisi lagi lagan, Main nahi makhan khayo, Rang de chunariya, Jag mein sundar hai do naam, and Chadariya jhini re
jhini.
VETERAN actress Shabana Azmi says she is humbled to be considered for the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian
award. “It’s my pleasure and I am humbled and delighted about it.
It feels good,” Azmi said. She has proved her versatility time and
again through films in her over three-decade career. She has also
undertaken a lot of international projects. Shabana keeps herself
immersed in social causes, and has spoken for women rights on
many occasions. She also runs an NGO, Mijwan Welfare Society,
working for the education and upliftment of the underprivileged.

“We’ve repeatedly asked them to sign an

“The fact of the matter is, there are no

every time a film’s promos start, we have

Sonam wary of
‘style icon’ tag
IANS
TYLISH actress Sonam Kapoor is fearful of being
called a fashion icon for the youth as she feels the
tag comes with a lot of responsibilities.
“It’s only been four years since I have been in the industry, and if in such a short time someone calls you iconic,
it is scary and overwhelming,” the 26-year-old actress
said at an event recently.
However, she feels it is more important to prove herself
as a good citizen first.
“As long as I am a responsible adult and I am responsible as a youth or a style icon, and I don’t take myself very
seriously that ‘Oh! I am so amazing’, but be a responsible
citizen and a good Indian, that is the most important
thing,” said Sonam.
Sonam turned up at the derby event clad in a coral red
sari and donning silver jewellery. While most women doll
up in dresses and a hat at a derby, Sonam decided to go
unconventional.
“Everyone wears a predictable dress and hat and comes
to the derby. I said why don’t I do it the old Indian style
where they used to wear cotton and chiffon saris. That’s
why I wore silver and coral,” said the actress, who was
recently seen in Players.
Sonam is currently busy shooting for Rakeysh
Omprakash Mehra’s Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and
Rajkumar Santoshi’s untitled film.

CTRESS Soha Ali Khan, who has guarded her relationship with Kunal Khemu
well so far, made a candid confession by
saying that she feels reluctant to accept her mistakes, and say ‘sorry’, while Kunal feels possessiveness in every relationship is important.
“I am very proud and find it extremely difficult to say the word ‘sorry’. I usually end up
arguing a lot in the bargain,” Soha said while
playing peacemaker between a couple for an
upcoming episode of UTV Stars’ Superstar
Santa.
“In fact, in our relationship, I have said the
least number of ‘sorries’ as compared to Kunal.
But it’s something I’m working on...I’m learning
to say ‘sorry’ more often to Kunal,” she added.

The duo, who has featured in films like 99 and
Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, has dodged the cameras
for a long time, but this will be one of their rare
appearances together on the small screen.
Kunal feels to sustain any relationship, it is
important to be possessive about each other.
While hearing out the woes of the

Dating 50 Cent was funny, says Handler
Demi Moore’s health woes
AMERICAN TV star Chelsea Handler says it was funny to date
rapper 50 Cent. The 36-year-old, who was romantically involved
with 50 Cent last year, insists the rapper is very different from
his on-stage persona. “He’s actually a lot different than you
would think. He’s really sweet. I thought it was kind of amusing
that I would even be with 50 Cent; I thought it was funny,”
showbizspy.com quoted Handler as saying. “My friends all loved
him, my friends fell in love with him. [Jennifer Aniston and
Reese Witherspoon] loved that I was dating him. They were like,
‘Chelsea, come on.’ They were both laughing really hard at it...I
mean, everyone was,” she added.
ACTRESS Demi Moore has entered a treatment facility for
exhaustion and health issues. The 49-year-old was reportedly
hospitalised recently after paramedics were called to her home.
Now she is seeking “further professional assistance,” reports
tmz.com. The reason why Moore was taken to hospital is still
unclear. But her representative stated: “Because of the stress in
her life right now, Demi has chosen to seek professional assistance to treat her exhaustion and improve her overall health.
She looks forward to getting well and is grateful for the support
of her family and friends.” The actress is going through a rough
patch in her personal life since her recent split.

OR Daniel Radcliffe,
it’s time to forget
Harry Potter. The 22year-old actor, inextricably linked to the boy
wizard he played throughout the
movie franchise, takes on his first
adult role in Victorian-era horror
film The Woman in Black.
Hitting theatres in Britain on
February 10 and a week earlier in
the United States, the movie is a
step into the unknown for an
actor who grew up on the set of
one of Hollywood’s most successful series.
Instead of production budgets
of $250 million or more, The
Woman in Black cost an estimated $17 million to make. And however big Radcliffe’s fan base
around the world, another billion-dollar box office looks out of
the question.
James Watkins, who directed
The Woman In Black, called it a
“reinvention” for Radcliffe.
“I think it’s the start of that,
absolutely,”
Radcliffe
told
Reuters in an interview ahead of
Tuesday’s red carpet world premiere of the new movie.
One of the attractions of playing Arthur Kipps, a young lawyer
and father mourning the death of
his wife, was the obvious break
with what went before.
“People haven’t seen me looking like this before. People
haven’t seen me playing a father
— all those things are going to
help separate it in their mind,”
Radcliffe said.
“But I think ultimately the
thing that will help that reinvention is the fact that the story is so
good. I think people will very
quickly forget that they’re watching Harry Potter.”

CREEPY MANSION
In The Woman in Black, Kipps
is forced to leave his three-yearold son and travel to a remote village on the east coast of England
to look into the legal affairs of the
recently deceased owner of Eel
Marsh House, a creepy mansion
cut off from the mainland when
the tide rises.
Radcliffe said he did not think
too hard about trying to be different from his Harry Potter character when he worked on the set of
The Woman in Black and was
pleased with the results.
“I think my work in this is certainly on a par with the work I did
on the last Potter which I was
very, very proud of.”
He will soon discover if critics
agree. Throughout the Harry
Potter series Radcliffe earned
mixed reviews, although any negative comments did nothing to
deter record audiences.
And his two main stage roles —
Equus in 2007 and How to
Succeed In Business Without
Really Trying in 2011 were generally well-received, particularly
Equus.
Looking ahead, Radcliffe said
proving he was not a one-part
wonder would take time. “It’s a
long road. It’s not going to be one
film and suddenly you’re off. It’s
going to be a combination.”
That combination will involve
both stage and screen.
“In an ideal world I would like
to mix them as much as possible.
In March I’m filming a movie
called Kill Your Darlings in
which I’ll be playing a 19-year-old
Allen Ginsberg. “That’s the next
thing on the plate and after that
we’ll see.”

ICHELLE Williams who plays Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn - the images that we see, the interviews that she
gave - was all very controlled,” Williams said.
“There’s this incandescence, this mixture, this womanchild. She gave the impression of having the body
of a woman but the mind and the heart of an
innocent person, and that was an intoxicating combination,” she added.
Marilyn was an icon and has been an
inspiration for numerous books and
films, including two diaries written by
English filmmaker Colin Clark, who worked
and befriended Marilyn during the making of
1957 movie The Prince and the Showgirl.
These memoirs now form the narrative for a
new film, My Week with Marilyn, with Williams
playing the role of Marliyn.

“Marilyn is an icon, and I must say that I have never
been so affected by somebody’s beauty until I started
spending a lot of time with her. I have always been drawn
to Marilyn,” said the 31-year-old Brokeback Mountain
star.
“But that doesn’t make me special in any way. She has
that magnetism and that draw for so many people, so I
read about her when I was young, devouring biographies. I’m most interested in her life before she became
Marilyn. For me, the interest wasn’t so much in this larger-than-life personality,” Williams added. The film will
hit screens on February 24.

Ananya to enter wedlock
Dhanush to make Bollywood debut
THE Nadodigal and Engaeyum Eppothum actress Ananya will marry
Anjaneyan, a Trichur-based entrepreneur soon. Their engagement is
scheduled for February 3. “It was always decided to leave my marriage upto my parents’ choice. When Anjaneyan and his family members approached the elders in my family with the wedding proposal,
my parents found him as being ‘the right man,’” says Ananya. The
wedding date is expected to be fixed during the betrothal function,
which will be attended by close relatives and friends. “I don’t know
whether I will continue acting or not after marriage. Anjaneyan has to
decide on that,” says Ananya, who is currently acting in a film titled
Iravum Pagalum.
THE actor became popular after the stupendous success of Why
this kolaveri di.. a song that took the nation by storm. Now
Dhanush has signed a film with Aanand L Rai of Tanu Weds
Manu fame. Dhanush says, “Aanand is a talented director and I
am happy to make my Hindi debut with his film. I don’t know
Hindi, but I believe it won’t be a problem. I will learn the culture
first and the language will follow suit.” Titled Raanjhnaa, the
film is a love story about a ‘simple young man’. “I was
awestruck by Dhanush’s performance when I watched
Aadukalam first. Immediately, I decided to cast him in this
script”, said Aanand.

CIVIL court in the city
had ordered an interim stay
on Karikalan's filming after
K S Rajasekaran, aka,
Nagaraj sent a notice to the
team alleging that the film's

S S Vasan, one of the film's producers, he
said that it is grossly unfair to drag Vikram's

when the producer and the director are issued

actor in such a case is unfair. He is not part of

he says. He reveals that Vikram had spoken to

we are consulting our lawyers about filing a

Stating that they have adequate proof to
