ARLA Nazih Berkachi, better known as Yara, al-ways wanted to be a singer. Having had the talent
since childhood, Yara also happened to have the
luck to realise her dream.
“Ever since I realised I was gifted with a talent,
I knew I wanted to use it, and become a singer. Both my par-ents have nice voices but I wanted to make use of this talent
I had,” the Lebanese pop singer who has been creating waves
across the Arab music told Qatar Tribune.
Yara was recently in Doha for the launch of the fragrance
Escada as its brand ambassador in the Middle East. “I rep-resent the brand because the fragrance connects with me by
being simple, elegant, happy and fresh. I feel it resembles
me,” she said at the event.
Yara, who has visited Doha a couple of times earlier to
perform, has a special word of praise for the place and the au-dience. “I get invited to perform at weddings across the Mid-dle East, but the people here in Doha are really appreciative,
friendly and loving. They have a passion for life and music.
Every time I am here, I have been showered with praise and
admiration. I want my fans to know that I love them.”
Having said that, she added “Singers are welcomed and
respected across the Arab world. Each singer has their own
personality and their own style, and they are very much sup-ported and respected here.”
She however was quick to add that despite everything, it
is very difficult to become a singer because of a lot of reasons.
Producing the right type of music and lyrics, the ones that
connect with the audience and finding a good production
company are, according to her, among the two biggest chal-lenges for singers.
Giving credit for her success to her mother, Yara said “My
mother has always stood by me. She has supported me in my
journey through the maze of the music industry. It was she
who encouraged me to get a music education so that I would
have a sound footing in the future.”

Abou Jaoudeh, further addded “The tal-ent show that I participated in, was my
ticket to fame. After that there has been
no looking back for me.”
Yara started her musical career with
a great ballad Hob Kbeer in 2006, and
joined Fadel Shakir in a duet called
khedni ma’ak which was written by
Tarek Abou Jaoudeh.
With an outstanding voice and
charming looks, she hogged the limelight
in no time. Her video Tawassa Feyi won
her a fan base in the Middle East that is
constantly growing.
In 2009 she joined Jean-Marie Ria-chi for the album Belaaks with the song
Shefto min biid (“I Saw Him”) in the
Lebanese dialect of Arabic language
“Right now I depend on composers
to write my songs, but in the future
I wish to write my own lyrics,”
she said indicating her future
plans.
“My inspiration dur-ing my teenage years

singers, she said she has
looked up to Celine Dion
and Mariah Carey adding that
she ‘really admires’ Beyonce.
Speaking in detail about
the perfume she was here to launch,
she said “It is an honour for me to
represent Escada.”
It is a perfume that suits women of
all ages, it comes in three fragrances
– original, delicate note and elixir. Elixir
is more intense as it is meant to be worn
in the evening, she
added.

AMES Badge Dale is on pace to
appear in every other block-buster this summer. The actor
somehow missed out on Star
Trek into Darkness and Fast
and Furious 6, but he co-stars as the vil-lainous Eric Savin in Iron Man 3 and will
be seen in World War Z and The Lone
Ranger.
“We’re dangerously close to overkill
right now,’’ Dale says, laughing. “No one
plans this kind of thing. It just worked
out this way. The strange thing is that
the last two years of my life have been
spent working on these three films and
now, through scheduling, they’re coming
out within two or three months. The or-der I did the films in was actually World
War Z, The Lone Ranger and Iron Man
3.’’
Set to open on June 21, World War Z
is a labour of love – and death and zom-bies – for star/producer Brad Pitt. Based
on the Max Brooks novel World War
Z: An Oral History of the Zombie
War (2006), the film casts Pitt
as Gerry Lane, a former Unit-ed Nations crisis specialist
who leaves behind his wife
(Mirielle Enos) and their
two young daughters in
order to help head off a
virulent virus that leaves
its victims dead and then
... reanimated and hun-gry for humans.

(2003-2004), The De-parted (2006), The Pacific
(2010), the series Rubi-con (2010) and Flight
(2012), co-stars in

bie apocalypse has happened and there
are pockets of survivors,’’ Dale says,
speaking by telephone from his Manhat-tan home. “Lane is with a pocket of peo-ple that includes a number of US govern-ment officials who have survived. They
have this email from a military prison in
Korea, and they think that’s where the
virus originated. If they can find where
the virus came from, maybe they can find
a cure.
“So Lane sets off to find the cure,’’
the actor continues, “and that’s when he
runs into my guy, Captain Speke, who
has barricaded himself, along with some
other guys, in the prison. I can’t say
much about him. I have a lot of interac-tion with Gerry and a lot of interaction
with the zombies. It’s an interesting
thing when people are under duress.
In those situations everyone does the
best they can and, fortunately, Speke is
equipped to deal with this.
“And, in a strange way, the way
Speke and his guys deal with all of this
is to joke around,’’ Dale adds. “There’s
actually an air of levity to him and to his
scenes.’’
He reports that he spent a consid-erable amount of time in the compa-ny of zombies. Or, more accurately,
he spent that time in the company
of the many actors, extras and danc-ers who portrayed the living dead.
“The zombies were incredible,’’
Dale says. “I’ve never experienced
anything like that. They hired these
dancers to play the zombies, and they
would choreograph these moves, al--
most routines. It was beautiful and eerie
at the same time.
“Here we were at 2 in the morning,
on an airfield, and it’s pouring rain,’’
he says. “It was backlit gorgeously, and
you’d see these men and women and
sometimes young children standing
there, practising these strange zombie
moves. I really think they make the
movie.’’ Anyone who keeps tabs on mov-ies is aware that World War Z wasn’t the
easiest movie to make. Stories abound
about budget overruns, tensions between
Pitt and director Marc Forster, reshoots
and the seizure, in Budapest, of weapons
meant for use on the film, but mistaken
for terrorist arms. Dale downplays the
controversies.
“My own experience, it was great,’’
he says. “There’s a lot of talk about that
stuff. To be quite honest, I think it’s been
overblown. Some of it is just normal. I
don’t think I’ve ever worked on a film
that hasn’t gone over budget. These are
all normal, par-for-the-course things.
“The experience on set was really
positive,’’ Dale continues. “Marc was
fantastic, Brad was great. We got lots
of great work done. I’ve seen the film.
It made me smile. I walked out of there
smiling because of the reason everyone
is talking about: ‘Oh, it was a difficult
shoot!’ What we have is a good movie,
and that’s all that matters.
“You look up on the screen and you
see that we all came together and we put
a story together,’’ he concludes. “I think
it looks beautiful and it works.’’
Dale will chase World War Z with
The Lone Ranger, in which he co-stars
as the doomed brother of the Lone
Ranger (Armie Hammer). If those two
movies prove anywhere near as success-ful as Iron Man 3, the film world could
become Dale’s oyster. The actor stead-fastly refuses, however, to take anything
for granted.
“I’ve been around, working profes-sionally, for about 12 years,’’ he says,
“and what I’ve learned in those 12 years
is that nothing makes sense. Things
happen, things don’t happen. The worst
thing you can have in this business is
expectations, because you’re bound to be
disappointed.
“I’m lucky that I love my job,’’ Dale
concludes. “I love these stories, I love
characters and bringing them to life. I
love theatre and film and television. So
the most important thing to me is not the
size of the role, but the writing, and also
characters and projects that grab me and
hold my interest. That’s what I focus on.’’

HO is Sonali Bendre’s
real life hero? The actress
calls her mother her hero
for raising three daugh-ters with very limited
resources and giving them wings despite
being not so educated. She admits this
kind of heroism is not so uncommon in
the country.
“My mother has done a great job with
her kids,” the 38-year-old actress said in
a group interview.
“The daily struggle of raising three
daughters with a very limited income, yet
seeing to it that they get a good upbring-ing, giving her daughters the wings even
after not being so educated - that person
is my hero,” Sonali added.
Having said that, she feels that “this
kind of heroism is in most of the women
in India because they all are doing that.”

of a child’s personality evolves in the

Although Zaalim Dilli is based in
Delhi, which is in the news for rising
crime against women, the film has ro-mance, heart break and action.
“It is a light-hearted film. It has no
critical agenda or angle. It has no social
message or anything like that, although
we all feel deeply about what is going on
with women, specially in Delhi,” Ira said.
The actress will be seen opposite
Pyaar Ka Punchnama actor Divyendu
Sharma. She said it was her character,
which attracted her to the film.
“I agreed to do Zaalim Dilli because
I fell in love with the character. She is a
typical Delhi girl. She is different from
Pinky (her character in Aisha). She is a
softer character,” said Ira who played a
high society girl in Aisha.
The story in a nutshell is about three
characters who face problems and how they
over come these problems by standing up
together, explained Ira.
She added: “The characters are very
relatable. There is an insecurity in my char-acter of doing something in life. She goes
through a nice journey in the film.”
Why long absence from the big screen?
“I wasn’t avidly pursuing films. I
turned down some work after Aisha.
Nothing was exciting me to do it. Plus, I
had a lot of theatre work going on with
different productions,” said the actress
who is into multitasking.
“I do a lot of things. I write, I act
and model sometimes and do ramp
shows. So, I was prioritising other
things. Also, I hadn’t found a film
that excited me enough. But it was
not a conscious decision to stay
away from cinema,” she added.

with Abhishek Bachchan for a
comedy film directed by Oh My
God fame director Umesh Shukla.
“We did speak to her about it
(film). But it is at an early stage. Noth-ing is finalised yet,” Shukla said .
Abhishek and Asin earlier featured
together playing brother-sister in Ro-hit Shetty’s comedy film Bol Bachchan.
If all goes well, this time they will
be paired romantically opposite each
other.
“We are reworking on our script.
And then accordingly we will decide
things. As of now we have not signed
any heroine,” Shukla said.
Shukla’s directorial venture Oh My
God had Paresh Rawal playing the role
of an atheist while Akshay Kumar was
seen in a modern day avatar of Lord
Krishna.
The film was a satire-comedydrama on religion and did well at the
box office after its release on Septem-ber 28 last year. This time again, the

Neha Sharma was disappointed
when her Bollywood debut Crook bombed
at the box office. She says she was in de-nial after that.
“Honestly, my first (southern) film
was a huge hit, so I didn’t expect my first
film (in Bollywood) to fail. I had seen that
high in life and didn’t know that this was
a possibility too. When it didn’t do well,
I was in denial and disappointed. I was
obviously living in a cocoon,” Neha said in
an interview.
“I want to do good work. The first
failure affected me. That is why I did
Kyaa Super Kool Hain Hum,” said the
actress and added that she wouldn’t have
done the adult comedy had her first film
worked.
“It’s something that I would not have
done as it is like going out of my comfort
zone. But I was like if this is what works,
then why not do this,” she explained.
It is important for newcomers, who
don’t have film background, to have box
office success. “You have to have box office
success then only people will show inter-est in you. This is something, which sur-prises me. I don’t think it is about talent
or looks, it is primarily about box office
success,” she said.
But she doesn’t take success or failure
seriously any more.
“I have done four films and I under-stand it is not something that you can
control. It is part of the business. No actor
can just have failures and no actor can just
have successes,” she said.
“I don’t get affected whether a film
does well or it doesn’t. But you do want
your films to do well as you put in a lot of
hard work,” she added.
Her next is Deols’ Yamla Pagla Dee-wana 2, which is coming out on June 7.
Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, the film also
stars Dharmendra as well as his two sons
- Sunny and Bobby.
She nurtured the dream of being a
fashion designer and acting just happened
along the way.
“I always wanted to be a designer and I
loved clothes and everything to do with it.
When I got a Telugu film, it happened out
of the blue ... at that point of time, I didn’t
realise how big it was. I really enjoyed my
journey. Then I was like this was exactly
what I want to do,” she said.

Land Rover refines its
entry-level offering

S the entry-level Land
Rover product in North
America, the LR2 has an
important role. It’s the first
step for many on what the
company hopes will be a long and loyal
journey through its product portfolio,
running through Evoque to LR4, Range
Rover and Sport models. So the lit-tlest Landie has undergone a number
of improvements and refinements for
2013 to bring it into line with its big-ger siblings, including a responsive yet
economical 2.0L turbo motor, a better
equipped interior and more ability onroad as well as off.
These upgrades come after a 2011
facelift that started the vehicle’s rise and
played a part in the LR2’s 30 awards
won globally. The car’s problem was
that it was built to perform off-road with
the likes of LR4 and Defender – some-thing it does remarkably well – yet had
to compete with soft-roading crossover
SUVs in the showroom that place more
emphasis on comfort and luxury. So
Land Rover took steps to level the mud-dy field, adding LED lighting, keyless
ignition and a 7” infotainment screen
with voice recognition plus the option of
a 17-speaker Meridian sound system.
It still has good towing capacity
– 3500 lb with the option of Hitch As-sist and a rear-view camera for one-man
operation. There’s an intelligent parking
brake that adapts to the angle of a slope,
as well as smart energy recuperation
and Land Rover’s legendary Terrain
Response system.
The new four-cylinder motor deliv--
ers more power with better economy
than the outgoing six and is 88 lb light-er. It’s commendably smooth and suit-ably responsive on the freeway, yet able
to provide plenty of torque to get you
through the rough stuff when maneu-vering off-road. This is another example
where downsizing has paid huge divi-dends. You gain in every aspect, with no
obvious penalties.
Perhaps our only complaint was the
light steering feel, which didn’t encour-age sporty driving, although we soon got
used to it. However, it made more sense
once the car was in its element off-road.
The same applied to the six-speed
auto that got the job done without call-ing attention to itself. There’s a Sport
mode for the street as well as a highmounted breather to allow a wading
depth of almost 20”. Coupled with a

The greatest off-road attribute is its
intelligent all-wheel drive system that
alters distribution of torque front to
rear. In normal conditions it runs most
of the power to the front wheels but is
able to redirect almost everything to the
rear if conditions dictate.
It works in harmony with the Terrain
Response that adapts engine, transmis-sion, centre coupling, traction- and sta-bility control systems to the demands of
the terrain, maximising traction. It will
work in the General setting, allowing
the car to calculate the best solution, or
you can select from grass/gravel/
snow, mud and ruts or
sand to allow terrain
response to better
understand the
challenge.
Working seamlessly together, these
remarkable systems allow all Land Rov-ers to achieve unimaginable feats. And
this ability is in the DNA, dictating the
LR2’s 8.3” of ground clearance, its steep
approach angles and impossible wheel
articulation. If you need any sort of offroad ability, the LR2 has the competi-tion beat.
Once you’re out of the mud, the
latest exterior upgrades lend the LR2 a
greater air of sophistication. It includes
new LED lighting, grille surround and
trim finishes. However, it’s the interior
that’s received the most attention. This
included the aforementioned 7” screen
in the new centre console to access the
audio functions and optional nav.
There’s also a 5” display in the main
instrument cluster to indicate informa-tion such as temp, fuel, gear, Terrain
Response mode, etc. Then there are
steering wheel switches to locate addi-tional vehicle information as needed.
Every trim level of the LR2, from the
basic model to the HSE and HSE Lux,
will have electric-powered leather seats
as standard as well as dual sunroofs to
give the cabin an airy feel. It all adds up
to a more appealing vehicle that sacri-fices none of its versatility in the pursuit
of a wider audience.

ABIES learn to babble before
they learn to talk, at first
simply repeating individual
syllables (as in ba-ba-ba), and
later stringing various sylla-bles together (as in ba-da-goo). Songbirds
exhibit similar patterns during song-learn-ing, and the capacity for this sort of syl-lable sequencing is widely believed to be
innate and to emerge full-blown – a theory
that is challenged by a paper published on
Nature’s website. A study of three species
– zebra finches, Bengalese finches and
humans – reports that none of the trio has
it that easy. Their young all have to learn
how to string syllables together slowly, pair
by pair.
“We discovered a previously unsus-pected stage in human vocal development,”
says first author Dina Lipkind, a psycholo-gist now at Hunter College in New York.
The research-ers began by
training
young
zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) to sing
a song in which three syllables represented
by the letters A, B and C came in the order
ABC-ABC. They then trained the birds to
sing a second song in which the same syl-lables were strung together in a different
order, ACB-ACB.
Eight out of 17 birds managed to learn
the second song, but they did not do so in
one fell swoop. They learned it as a series
of syllable pairs, first, say, learning to go
from A to C, then from C to B and finally
from B to A. And they didn’t do it over-night, as the innate-sequencing theory
predicts. Instead, on average, they learned
the first pair in about 10 days, the second
in four days and the third in two days.
The researchers found evidence of
similar learning patterns in untrained Ben-galese finches (Lonchura striata domesti-ca). For instance, in this bird’s songs, some
syllable pairs are reversible – sometimes
syllable A comes before syllable B and vice
versa. Again, the innate-sequencing theory
predicts that young birds should acquire
both orders at the same time, but they do
not. When the scientists tracked the de-velopment of seven such pairs, they found
that the birds
acquired the
two or-ders an
average
of about
18 days
apart.
Babble on
Perhaps most surprisingly, the study
found evidence that human babies
follow a similar learning pattern. When
the researchers analysed databases of
vocal recordings from nine infants, they
found that their well-known babbling
progression – from repeating the same
syllable to stringing different syllables
together – did not happen quickly, but oc-curred gradually, over a period of 20-30
weeks.
“The study provides beautiful evidence
of stepwise transitions in songbirds, as
well as analyses that are suggestive of the
same phenomenon in human infants,”
says Michael Frank, a language-acquisi-tion researcher at Stanford University
in California. But he cautions that the
hypothesis for babies should be tested
experimentally.
Michael Goldstein, a psychologist
who heads a bird and baby lab at Cornell
University in Ithaca, New York, questions
whether the learning patterns exhibited
by the finches can even be generalised
across the species’ tuneful relatives.
“There’s no such thing as a generic song-bird,” he says. He also points out that the
study used only small sample sizes.
But Goldstein is also heartened by the
study’s cross-species comparisons. “A lot
of people talk about the parallels between
birds and babies,” he says, “but very few
actually study them. It’s good that they’ve
done this.”
