REUTERS INGER Justin Timberlake took home two more Emmys on Saturday in his burgeoning career as a comedic actor, while Gwyneth Paltrow added a television honour to a life spent mostly in the movies. The 30-year-old, who started out as a pop singer, already has two Emmys for his previous work on Saturday Night Live. Timberlake was not on hand to collect his trophies, which were handed out in the creative arts portion of the PrimeTime Emmy Awards. Monday, September 12, 2011 TECHNOLOGY www.qatar-tribune.com 31 Facebook gets rid of Deals Technology guide FACEBOOK announced late Friday that it would be bowing out of the daily deal business. The Groupon-inspired Facebook Deals was discontinued after only four months of testing. In a statement received by Reuters and other outlets, a Facebook spokesperson wrote: “After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local business. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses.”The end of Deals seems like a logical follow after the nixed Facebook Places app, though the company insists that it will still maintain the Check-in feature as well as Ads, Pages, and Sponsored stories; local business aren’t being completely shuffled aside. Facebook Deals began its short-lived existence in April this year, sparking anticipation of heated and frenzied competition with Google Offers, Living Social Groupon and the other sites packed into the cramped pool of local-discount services. Deals had already put down roots in five major cities, set up deals with merchants in the area and set up offers with other daily deal companies such as ReachLocal, OpenTable, Tippr, aDealio and more. Apple suppliers building cheaper, 8GB iPhone? CLARE JIM AND KELVIN SOH Iphone 4 displayed at a store. REUTERS T Asian suppliers to Apple Inc have begun manufacturing a lower-priced version of its hot-selling iPhone 4 with a smaller 8 gigabyte flash drive, according to a source with knowledge of the matter HE flash drive for the 8GB iPhone 4 is being manufactured by a Korean company, one of the people said Tuesday, declining to name the company. Apple currently sources its flash drives from Japan’s Toshiba and South Korea’s Samsung Electronics. The sources declined to be identified because the information has not been made public. Apple, which demands high levels of secrecy and security from suppliers and employees, declined to comment. Samsung also declined to comment. The existing iPhone 4 was first launched in June 2010 with 16 GB and 32 GB versions, with a white version added to the lineup in April. The 8GB version is expected to launch within weeks, the sources said. Some analysts said the cheaper 8GB iPhone 4 could help Apple boost sales in emerging markets. “Apple may want to push into the emerging market segment where customers want to switch to low- to mid-end smartphones from high-end feature phones, which usually cost $150-200,” said Yuanta Securities analyst Bonnie Chang. “But I think for an 8GB iPhone 4 the price is hard to go below $200, so Apple will still need a completely new phone with low specifications for the emerging markets.” IPHONE 5 BY END-SEPTEMBER? In addition to the launch of the smaller iPhone 4, Apple is targeting an end-September launch for the next-generation iPhone 5, one source said, confirming earlier reports on Apple follower blogsites and industry websites. The new iPhone, which some call the iPhone 4S because of its largely identical appearance to the existing iPhone 4, will have a bigger touch screen, better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera, one of the people said. The iPhone 5’s two manufacturers have been told to prepare production capacity for up to 45 million units altogether, the source said. The phone will be made by Hon Hai and Pegatron, the person added. Apple sold 20.34 million iPhones in the second quarter versus an expected 17 million to 18 million, and is increasingly looking to Asia to boost future earnings. The company’s COO Tim Cook said in July the company is particularly optimistic about Greater China. “I firmly believe that we are just scratching the surface right now,” Cook said about China. “I think there is an incredible opportunity for China there.” Asia-Pacific — which accounts for about one-fifth of its total revenue — and Greater China in particular, helped Apple’s revenue surge 82 percent to $28.6 billion in April-June. Overall, Asia-Pacific revenue more than tripled to $6.3 billion in the quarter. From left: Iphone 4’s front, back and side view. I have converted from a bad guy of ZG to a good lawyer for Jolly LLB (sic),” Arshad posted on his Twitter page. I am so fortunate to get two good films with completely contrasting characters to play back to back. Both my films will release next year,” he added. EVER wondered why John Abraham always manages to have sizzling chemistry with his co-stars? “My chemistry with every co-star that I work with somehow turns out to be ‘sizzling hot’ may that be Genelia, Katrina, Vidya Balan or even with Abhishek Bachchan. So I feel it is important to have chemistry with your co-star, only then the film turns out to be a good product,” said John. The 38-year-old actor will soon be seen romancing Genelia D’Souza in Force. ARSHAD WARSI JOHN ABRAHAM Big B makes a foray into Hollywood Shahrukh Khan unveils the Champions league T20 trophy, in Mumbai, India, on Friday. IANS MUMBAI AZ Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby is Big B’s foray into the West but he is not really looking at it as a gateway to Hollywood. The film to be directed by Luhrmann is in 3D. Amitabh Bachchan will essay the role of Meyer Wolfsheim, “an iconic character”, patterned on Arnold Rothstein - a “very impressive and well-known person of the New York underworld mafia”. “Yes, the film is in 3D and is perhaps a first for many reasons, primarily because it’s the first time that a mainstream drama from Hollywood is being done in 3D as opposed to the usual fantasy films like Avatar,” says Bachchan. Big B has no plans to do more Hollywood films yet. “No other offers have come my way from Hollywood before and since Baz was very keen I do this, I went ahead. It’s nothing big, just a small appearance,” he says. “Earlier, Mira Nair had come across with Shantaram, finalized dates and shared the script etc. But then she withdrew... I do not think you should look at this as a step into Hollywood. It’s just a gesture of friendship,” Bachchan says. In fact, according to a source close to him, Big B is doing the film free of cost for Luhrmann who’s a great fan of his and of Bollywood. Reluctant to talk about the project, Big B says: “Contractual obligations prevent me from talking to the media, which is why I have not divulged anything. If the studio Warner Bros. gives something out, that is all that I can disclose.” Bachchan does divulge that he and Luhrmann hit it off from the start. “Baz Luhrmann, last year, was on a private visit to India and dropped by at my office to meet me and presented me some wonderful paintings done by an artist he was accompanied by. It was merely an informal casual meet,” Bachchan says. Then in August this year Luhrmann called him and wondered if he would do a role in The Great Gatsby. “He (Luhrmann) asked me, would I do a small part in his film? It’s just a small scene with Leonardo Dicaprio and Tobey Macguire,” Bachchan says. “I have agreed to do this just as a friendly appearance and went across to Sydney late last month for rehearsals and hair make-up and costume tests. The reading workshop requires the entire cast to assemble and get familiar with the script and do a read through,” Bachchan signs off. Shooting for the film starts mid-October for a couple of days. According to ESS, a host of advertisers have already booked ad spots. “Nokia, Toshiba, Coca Cola, Ambuja Cements, Next Retail and Digiworld have already joined us as on-air sponsors, while Nokia, Toshiba and Coca Cola have signed up as on-ground sponsors as well,” ESS said, adding that more names would be announced over the next few days. Already seven teams, including three from India, have qualified for the tournament. The qualifiers for three remaining spots will be played in Hyderabad from September 19 to September 21. E Mere Brother... will change Katrina’s diva image: Director JOGINDER TUTEJA PTI ILMMAKER Ali Abbas Zafar says he always wanted Katrina Kaif to play the bride in his recentlyreleased Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and he hopes that the comedy will change her diva image. Zafar, a newcomer, has directed the film under Yash Raj Banner, and says Kaif, in a joyous and fun loving avatar is much more relatable to the audience. “Katrina is in total contrast to what she has done in the past. This whole image of her being a diva would change with this film because she has been presented as a next-door-girl,” Zafar said. The movie also stars Imran Khan, singer Ali Zafar and follows the story of a guy who falls in love with his brother’s bride. F Ali Abbas Zafar, director. Zafar who has been an assistant director to movies like Badmaash Company, Tashan and New York, is making his directorial debut with the film. The director says that Katrina was perfect choice for the role. “It was when Karan Johar’s Dostana 2 got pushed due to which Katrina’s dates opened up. Aditya Chopra (producer) asked me about who I wanted to cast in the movie. When I said Katrina, he asked me that what was in my script that would appeal to her, I said that it was a mad film and would change the way she is perceived by the audience. He was convinced an asked me to talk to her,” Zafar said. The debutant also said that he was initially skeptical if the Singh Is Kinng actress would agree to do the film because of her busy schedule. “I emailed her in the night and she called me back the very next morning. She said that she really loved the role and wanted to start, the moment everything was sealed along with the leading man. Imran Khan came in soon after and we were all set to get the film on floors,” he added. The Los Angeles-based jewellery brand is owned by Hudson’s long-time friend Laurie Lynn Stark. Hudson is the first actress to partner with the company on a range, which will be called CH + KH. “It occurred to us, we spend all of this time together - why don’t we make something,” contactmusic.com quoted Hudson as saying. The collection will be 18 and 22 carat gold bohemian pieces set with white diamonds, fresh water pearls and aquamarine, green tourmaline, peridot and citrine gemstones. It will be launched in late summer in selected Chrome Hearts stores. TROUBLED actress Lindsay Lohan has denied rumours that her younger sister Ali has had plastic surgery. Ali,17, was spotted in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, earlier this week with more prominent cheekbones and looking a lot thinner, leading to speculation that she had gone under the knife, reports femalefirst.co.uk. However, the Mean Girls actress denied the reports by saying that her sister would not do that to her body. “No way! Never”!” the 25-yearold told GossipCop.com KATE HUDSON LINDSAY LOHAN (LEFT) AND ALI LOHAN. Dirty politics nothing new, says Clooney STEVE POND REUTERS I F you think today’s political landscape is unusually brutal and dirty, George Clooney has a history lesson for you: It was just as bad 200 years ago. “I think it’s cyclical, and we’re at a period of time that is probably not the best for politics,” said Clooney at a T o r o n t o International Film Festival press conference for The Ides of March, a smart and c y n i c a l drama that he directed and in which he plays a charismatic presidential candidate. “But if you look at the things Jefferson and Adams did to each other, that wasn’t very nice either. The 1800 election was nasty, too. It’s cyclical.” A week after claiming the crown as the king of the Telluride Film Festival, Clooney brought his charm at a Toronto press conference that preceded his film’s gala screening by a few hours. Although he was joined by cowriter Grant Heslov and by actors Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright and Max Minghella, about 80 George Clooney Denzel Washington to star in Zemeckis’ Flight JOSHUA L WEINSTEIN REUTERS Denzel Washington R OBERT Zemeckis is getting back into the live-action business, directing Flight, starring Denzel Washington, Paramount Pictures said on Friday. The movie is a redemption tale about Whip, an airline pilot who lands a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight with 106 people — think Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger with star power. The world considers him a hero, but he struggles with the label, “as he is forced to hold up to the scrutiny of an investigation that brings into question his behaviour the night before the doomed flight.” John Gatins, who wrote Dreamer: Inspired By a True Story and Real Steel wrote the script. It’s the first time Washington and Zemeckis have worked together. In August, Zemeckis The movie is a redemption tale about Whip, an airline pilot who lands a damaged plane, saving 98 lives on a flight with 106 people landed a two-year first-look production deal at Universal. Flight is his return to live-action. The director of Forrest Gump, Back to the Future and the innovative Who Framed Roger Rabbit? has focused on stop-action recently. He last directed 2009’s A Christmas Carol and produced 2011’s Mars Need Moms. Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will produce under their Parkes/MacDonald banner along with Zemeckis, Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke for their ImageMovers. The movie is scheduled to start shooting this October in Atlanta. “Everybody makes moral choices that better themselves and hurt others along the way. That’s universal, not peculiar to politics. This could have been set on Wall Street” percent of the questions were directed at Clooney — and a good portion of the ones that weren’t aimed his way were variations on the query, “How great was it to work with George?” While a good many questions were political in nature, Clooney kept things light and insisted that his film does not have a political agenda. (His character espouses many liberal ideas that one would expect Clooney to share, but is also revealed to hardly be a paragon of integrity.) “I don’t think that this was really a political film,” Clooney said. “I think this is a film about moral choice … I thought it was a fun moral tale, and if you put it in politics that amps up all the fun.” “If it’s reflecting some of the cynicism we feel today about politics, that’s probably good,” he added. “We should be looking at things. But it wasn’t designed to do that. “Everybody makes moral choices that better themselves and hurt others along the way. That’s universal, not just to politics. This could have been set on Wall Street. Actually, it would have been easier to do it on Wall Street.” As for the politician he plays, Clooney declined to specify any particular role models. “There’s just so many ways to get in trouble with this answer,” he said. “There were enough examples that we just picked little pieces of whatever we wanted.” Jeffrey Wright, who was raised in Washington, DC, agreed with Clooney’s description of the film as more moral than political: at its heart, he said, he thinks of it as “more of a gangster film.” When a Canadian reporter asked Gosling, who was born and raised in Ontario, if a similar film could be made about Canadian politics, the actor frowned. “I think it’d be more …” He stopped. “No. The Canadian version would be too nice.” Of course, the Q&A wasn’t all about politics. Because it was Clooney, some questioners appeared a little starstruck: one woman’s “question” was “Tell me: George Clooney, film director.” “Tell you what?” asked Clooney. “I don’t want to blow anybody’s mind, but I’m pretty much the same guy as George Clooney the actor. Same height. Same hair.” He paused. “I don’t know what you want me to say about it.” Through the actors, we learned about director Clooney’s practical jokes — having an intense conversation about the film with Gosling while surreptitiously spraying his leading man’s crotch from a water bottle — and about his method of empowering actors. “He would tell me, ‘You have the most power in this scene,’” remembered Marisa Tomei, who plays a New York Times reporter. “I’d think, I have the most power in the scene?” Clooney grinned. “I told everybody that,” he said. For Clooney, Ides is only the first of his two-part Toronto domination plan: the TIFF premiere of The Descendants, the film that wowed Telluride, has been played this weekend. Miley Cyrus: I’m not a “good girl gone bad” IANS ILEY Cyrus is, like, so misunderstood. The former Disney Channel actress, now 18, tells Asia’s Prestige magazine that while she isn’t perfect, she’s not a reckless wild child, either. “People have very mixed opinions on me,” Cyrus says. “I’m a great model, or I’m completely inappropriate for anyone under 13 and I’m very controversial. I don’t know how I became this.” Perhaps it has something to do with her string of public missteps, beginning with a suggestive photo spread in Vanity Fair in 2008 and ending with a salvia scandal in late 2010. “I’m not some crazy lady who’s gone off the deep end, because I definitely haven’t,” Cyrus explains. “Every 18-year-old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there’s no reason to change that.” In the article, Cyrus also recalls reading a magazine article that labelled her a “Good Girl Gone Bad,” a title she doesn’t feel she deserves. “I was like, ‘What the hell, man?’ I stay in the house pretty much every day. I don’t go out,” she tells Prestige. “I’ve had the same boyfriend [Liam Miley Cyrus Hemsworth] for two years.” M 36 Monday, September 12, 2011 SOUTHSCOPE www.qatar-tribune.com Scene unscene Richa’s Twitter trouble!
