come up for air?
Certainly not Jeffrey
Dean Morgan. The
actor has wrapped
four films that will
have been released by the end of 2011: The
Resident, Texas Killing Fields, Peace,
Love & Understanding and The Courier.
The long-delayed Red Dawn remake
will finally open in 2012, as will
The Possession. And right now
Morgan is shooting an
upcoming cable-television series entitled
Magic City.
“I spent a lot of
years doing nothing
but breathing air and not
working,’’ the actor says. “So,
when everything took off in
2005, I sort of grabbed onto it and I’ve not let go. I have
got white knuckles trying to hold onto what’s going on
right now, but I have been lucky enough to go from project to project, and to do different projects, completely different characters. It’s been a mix.”
The ruggedly handsome Morgan had been acting for
nearly 15 years, logging numerous television guest shots
and appearing in films barely anyone ever saw, when in
2005 he landed memorable recurring roles on two highprofile television series: He played the father of Jared
Padalecki and Jensen Ackles’ characters on Supernatural
(2005-2008), and almost simultaneously melted hearts as
Denny Duquette, the doomed lover of Izzie Stevens
(Katherine Heigl) on the then-runaway hit Grey’s Anatomy
(2006-2009). He went on to a number of big-screen roles,
most notably as the murdered superhero the Comedian in
Watchmen (2009).
“I’ve learned a lot since then,’’ the 45-year-old Morgan
says. “It’s tricky, exceedingly tricky, to pick the right roles.
I’ve learned some valuable lessons in the last couple of years,
and mostly that is that you can have a script that reads good
but, if you don’t have the right director, the right editor, the
right cast, whatever you read that initially attracted you to it
can turn into a complete and utter disaster over which you
have no control.”
Morgan is speaking by telephone from Miami, where he
is shooting Magic City, to talk about Texas Killing Fields,
the next film in his release queue. Set to open on October 14,
the fact-based drama casts Morgan and Sam Worthington
as Heigh and Souder, two cops trying to crack the case of a

vicious serial killer who is dumping bodies in a small-town
Texas marshland dubbed The Killing Fields. The cast also
includes Jessica Chastain as another cop on the case and
Chloe Grace Moretz as a young local girl who vanishes even
as the killer switches tactics and begins to menace the cops
themselves.
“Don Ferrarone wrote an amazing script,’’ Morgan says.
“It’s a real dark look, and a real look, at a couple of homicide
cops. It’s based on a true story, which will always intrigue
me. And first I met with Michael Mann, the producer, and
then I met his daughter Ami, who directed this. She was so
prepared and passionate that I was immediately drawn in.”
“Then I did ride-alongs – the real deal, not the actor B S
kind of ride-alongs – with the sheriff’s homicide department
of Los Angeles,’’ the actor continues. “Then I went and spent
time in Texas City with the guy I’m portraying. Once I saw
the Texas Killing Fields, which is a real place, and stood
where bodies had been recovered, and once I saw the crimescene photos, everything came together for me then. And it
was a film I had to do.’’
His conversations with Brian Goetschius, the inspiration
for his character, proved invaluable, he says. Morgan
describes Goetschius as an unusual man to find in his kind
of job – happily married, raising six kids and stopping at
church every day on his way to work.
“It’s a good little movie,’’ he concludes, “and I’m glad people will get a chance to see it. It’ll start out as a limited release
and go wider. I don’t know if it’s for everyone – it deals with
stuff people don’t generally like. There’s no glossing of fairy
tale over this film at all. It’s as much real stuff as you can jam
into an hour-and-45-minute film.’’
Morgan has yet to see any of the other films he’s completed. While he speaks positively of both The Possession, a horror movie in which he co-stars with Kyra Sedgwick, and Red
Dawn, which went before the camera in 2009 and finally
will be released early next year, he seems most jazzed about
Magic City.
The upcoming Starz series follows the exploits of Ike
Evans (Morgan), a Jewish hotel boss contending with mobsters, his family and all manner of guests at his
Fontainebleau-like hotel in Miami, circa 1959. Olga
Kurylenko plays Evans’ wife and Danny Huston co-stars as
a mob figure.
“This will be the most amazing thing television has seen in
years,’’ Morgan says. “That’s how confident I feel about it,
and I never say that (blarney) about my projects.’’
Whatever hours he doesn’t devote to his career are spent
with his family. He and his girlfriend, White Collar co-star
Hilarie Burton, have been together since 2009, and are the
parents of Gus, born early last year.
“Hilarie is a superhero,’’ Morgan says. “I don’t know how
she’s able to raise my little boy, take care of me and have a
job. She’s the most amazing woman in the world, and how
she puts up with me, we’ll never know.”

ACTRESS Ashley Greene wants to be the next Bond girl. “I
would love to be a Bond girl. I love action films because I have
kind of dabbled in that a little bit now with Twilight, and the
characters are always really strong but have a little twist to
them. They are just such cool characters to play,” contactmusic.com quoted Greene as saying. But she might have to wait a
while as it’s reported that British actress Naomie Harris will play
the coveted lead female role in the upcoming 23rd Bond film.
SEX AND THE CITY star Kristin Davis has adopted a
baby girl. The single actress, an ambassador for poverty
organisation Oxfam, became the legal guardian of
Gemma Rose Davis after filing her application through a
US-based adoption agency. “This is something I have
wanted for a very long time. Having this wish come true
is even more gratifying than I ever had imagined. I feel
so blessed,” dailystar.co.uk quoted her as saying.

HAT do you
do when you
see a sweating
man
changing the
30cm-wide punctured tyre of
a Bentley Continental GT in
the rain? You smile, of course,
then drive past and inhale
that most satisfying aroma rank schadenfreude. Well,
last weekend, on a busy main
road in southern England,
that man in the rain was me.
To make the most of my time
with the new GT, I’d taken it
on a mini Grand Tour, up
through the Cotswolds then
back in a long lazy loop to
London. I’d spent several
happy hours powering past
small fry and practising my
look of haughty disdain. But
then, to my horror, I plunged
into a gaping pothole. A sickening thump was followed by
the unmistakable slapping
sound of a flat tyre. Worse
was to come. The skinny
spare has a limit of only
80kph, so I spent the day
inching the 320kph supercar
back home. The final insult
was added when I was flashed
doing 77kph in a 65kph zone
near home.

Crossovers are typically based on
front-drive cars with limited towing and off-road abilities.
Body-on-frame SUV’s are based
on pickups, and they drive and
swill fuel like trucks. The latest
Durango, though, is based on neither a car nor a pickup. Thanks to
Chrysler’s bygone hookup with
Mercedes-Benz, the Durango
shares DNA with the Mercedes
GL. Like the $60,000-plus GL,
the Durango uses a rear-drive
unibody platform with independent suspensions front and rear.
The Durango’s new
V-6 puts out a healthy
290 horsepower, but
Dodge also offers a
360-horsepower Hemi
V-8 that uses a cylinderdeactivation system
to run on 4 cylinders
under light loads
This seems the best of both
worlds. You get SUV prowess for
off-roading and towing without
paying a significant penalty in onroad drivability or fuel economy.
The Durango’s new V-6 puts out a
healthy 290 horsepower, but
Dodge also offers a 360-horsepower Hemi V-8 that uses a cylinder-deactivation system to run on
4 cylinders under light loads.
In stark contrast to its rude
predecessor, the new Durango
looks like a member of a higher
price bracket. You might expect
heated leather rear seats and
adaptive cruise control in a Lexus,
but their availability in a Dodge is
a nice surprise. While the Durango
starts around $30,000, options
can hoist the price beyond
$47,000. Don’t think of it as an
expensive Dodge; think of it as an
inexpensive Mercedes.
Bentley Continental
GT is enormous - it weighs in
at an immodest 2.3 tonnes.
The bonnet stretches into the
horizon. And yet, despite its
awesome scale, it’s the little
things that win you over. The
steering wheel is heated. The
air vents are controlled by
organ-stop chrome knobs.
The boot is opened by lightly
brushing the “B” on the rear
badge. The boot and doors
are self-closing and, let’s be
honest, having to shut things
can be a real fag. Best of all is
the fact that when you sink
into your fat-man’s driving
seat, a small arm passes you
your seat belt. Heaven forbid
you might have to reach over
your own shoulder.
It is larger than life, brazen,
unapologetic and quintessentially English - yet despite its
shortcomings inspires great
affection. It is packed with
contradictions: it’s hugely
overweight yet boasts graceful
lines and dances round corners; it is conservative yet
technically ahead of its time; it
is one of the most glamorous
marques in the world, yet it is
built in Crewe. But, the
Bentley doesn’t hide this fact it rejoices in it. Every vehicle
has a metal plate screwed to
the door with the words:
“Handcrafted by Bentley
Motors Ltd, Crewe, England.”
This most recent model of
the Continental GT now
comes with a revolutionary
six-speed auto gearbox that
reduces shift times by 50 percent. The monumental 6-litre
twin-turbo W12 engine has
been uprated and now puts
out a heroic 567bhp. The car
features active air suspension,
so it raises and lowers itself to
improve its aerodynamics.
All this indulgence brings
with it a certain amount of
pain. And that pain is felt most
acutely when watching the
fuel-consumption figure. You
feel like cheering when the figure jumps from 1.5km per litre
to 1.6km. Admittedly that was
in nasty start-stop traffic - on
the open road it was managing
an average of about 7.4km the official combined figure is
a pitiful 6.0km.

Bipasha has a blast in Greek isle
ACTOR Anupam Kher says he will receive the
Kalidas Samman, an arts award presented annually by the Madhya Pradesh government. “Have
to share this great news. I have been chosen for
this year’s Kalidas Samman award in the field of
theatre” said Anupam. The 56-year-old actor,
who has spent nearly three decades in the film
industry, has featured in over 300 films so far.
An alumnus and former chairperson of the
National School of Drama, he also runs an acting
academy.
ACTRESS Bipasha Basu, who is in Greece for a film
shoot, says she had a blast in an island named
Mykonos. She loved its relaxed feel, food and shopping.
“Leaving Mykonos and now off to Athens! Had d best
time ever! Mykonos is just my kinda place! Ocean, sun,
beaches, music and very relaxed and friendly people,”
said Bipasha. She couldn’t stop raving about the place.
“And how can I forget the sea food and the yummiest
cheese crepes! Shopping here is also very my style maxis and cute dresses in floral prints or whites and

FTER getting Rajinikanth on board for a
cameo in his mega-budget project RA One,
Shah Rukh Khan has managed to rope in
megastar Amitabh Bachchan for a voiceover to
introduce a game based on the superhero flick.
Amitabh, known for his distinct baritone, drove
down on Thursday morning to do a voiceover for the
movie. He left Oscar-winning sound designer Resul
Pookutty amazed by his skill and dexterity.
“He came and finished his work in no time. We wanted him to introduce the game RA One in the film in his
voice. His presence has changed the whole film. I wanted to have Amitji involved in our film somehow. Now
the introduction of the game is in his voice. This is the
best way I could bring Amitji into the project,” said
Pookutty.
Big B has earlier been involved with Shah Rukh’s
production house when he did a cameo in Paheli. The
two also featured together in Mohabbatein, Kabhi
Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna.

RNOLD Schwarzenegger took a
trip down memory lane in Austria
on Friday, visiting his childhood
home to open a museum dedicated to his life. Hundreds of fans many clad in Terminator-style
leather jackets and national dress — gathered in
the soggy southern village of Thal to see the former California governor and Hollywood action
star.
“It is a little house that stands here behind us, it
is an old house, it has been repainted in yellow
and it has been freshly renovated. But it was here
that I spent my youth,” Schwarzenegger told the
rain-soaked crowd crammed into the garden.
Speaking with a soft Austrian provincial accent,
Schwarzenegger said the museum was now home
to mementoes including the first bodybuilding
weights he hoisted as a teenager and the desk
from his governor’s office in Sacramento.
The 64-year-old said he hoped the story of his
curious transition from bodybuilder to movie star
to politician would inspire
others.

Schwarzenegger was born in 1947 in Thal, a
small, traditional village set in forest-covered

His passion for lifting weights there as a boy led
him to the Mr Universe, Mr World and five consecutive Mr Olympia titles. He moved to the
United States when he was 21.
He recounted memorable moments in his life,
such as lifting weights 4-5 hours a day, attending
film premieres, his marriage to Maria Shriver and
the birth of his children.
Schwarzenegger, who in May announced his
separation from Shriver after admitting to fathering a child out of wedlock, is working on his second autobiography.
“Everyone can achieve what I did because personal success does not have so much to do with
millions, with headlines in the media - that are
not always positive — and nothing to do with the
pat on the back from Barack Obama or other big
names,” he said as his 18-year-old son Patrick,
one of four children he had with Shriver, stood
beside him.
One fan outside the museum needed little convincing that the star of such blockbuster films as
Terminator, Total Recall, Last Action Hero and
comedies such as Kindergarten Cop and Twins
was a good role model.
“Arnold is a first class man. He opened our
Terminator motorcycle club in Slovenia,” Branko
Slikar said, clad in a leather jacket, long grey
beard and sunglasses.
“He is the number one body builder, the number one actor and the number one politician,” he
said, pumping his fists in the air.
Schwarzenegger this year halted discussions
for a new Terminator movie and all other
Hollywood projects, saying he wanted to focus on
personal matters after admitting to fathering a
secret child with his housekeeper 13 years ago.
He was ridiculed by US media over the affair,
with some media outlets dubbing him the
“Sperminator.” Shriver, a member of the
Kennedy dynasty, filed for divorce in July after 25
years of marriage.

attracted to going on the road,” she said

International Film Festival. “I was never
willing to stay in my country. I wanted

proximity” between French and South

“It’s alive. It’s vivid,” she said.
Asian films have been gaining international prominence with the success of
directors like China’s Zhang Yimou,
South Korea’s Park Chan-wook and
Thailand’s Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
Huppert is among the most-nominated actors in France’s annual Cesar
competition, comparable to the
Academy Awards, and was head of the
Cannes Film Festival jury in 2009.
Earlier this year, she was honoured
with the Stockholm Film Festival’s
lifetime achievement award.
Huppert is one of dozens of guests
adding to the glamour of the nineday Busan film festival that kicked

and Dharani, she says, “Although both of them are
great task masters, Selvaraghavan and his crew would
spend a lot of time together on the sets. Dharani and

other offers after these two films get released.”

FTER Manmathan, Simbu is on the hunt for
more heroines for his Vettai Mannan. Now
the actor is on the post production spree for
his ensuing Osthi and after this movie he will
take the shield for Vettai Mannan.
According to sources, there could be three heroines in
the movie and one among them will be Hansika
Motwani. She will be bracketed with Deeksha Seth and
Poonam Kaur for the female lead roles. This indicates
that there will be a treat for the fans to have the added
glamour from the trio.
Simbu is to portray himself as the leader of a gang having worldwide contacts. He will be accompanied by Jai
whose wheel of fortune is on the vertical end after
Engeyum Eppothum. As usual Simbu has reaped in
Yuvan Shankar Raja for music.
The film comes from the banner NIC Arts under the

F rumours doing rounds in
Kollywood are anything to go
by, director Shankar might
well end up making sequel to
his highly successful Indian
which released in the nineties and
starred Kamal Haasan, Sukanya,
Manisha Koirala and Urmila Matondkar in
lead roles. The film narrated the social anger
of a 70-plus old man who fights tooth and
nail against the prevalent system to root out
corruption at all levels.
Fresh from the success of his latest film
Mankatha, Ajith has already started work on
his upcoming film Billa-2, a prequel to his
successful Billa which released in 2007.
Shankar has hinted about the sequel to
Indian and his determination to make a successful film for producer A M Rathnam. The
duo’s earlier film Boys wasn’t as successful as
Shankar and Ratnam would have expected.
Industry sources say that the re-union of
Shankar and Ratnam might culminate in
the sequel to Indian. Ratnam is said to be
very particular to make a sequel to Indian
especially in the backdrop of the successful struggle the 70-plus Anna Hazare
launched against the Union government
