helps humans and
aliens keep peace

T’S all about strong female roles,
Julie Benz says, explaining how
and why she’s built a resume
heavy on sci-fi, fantasy and hor-ror fare.
That she has can hardly be disputed.
Best known as the icy-cold vampire Dar-la in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (19962000) and Angel (2000-2004), she’s
also been seen in Two Evil Eyes (1990),
Sliders (1996), Roswell (1999-2000),
Supernatural (2006), Saw V (2008), No
Ordinary Family (2010-2011) and the
new Syfy series Defiance.
“I don’t sit there and think, ‘I want
to do a sci-fi show,’’’ Benz says. “What I
look for is, ‘Where is the strongest female
character I can find?’ And it’s happened
to be in genre material. I think they’re
able to write very complex women,
whereas in mainstream television that
doesn’t happen as much.
“That’s what I love about Defiance,’’
she says. “All the women are extremely
complex, very different and very dy-namic.’’
Syfy will launch Defiance in April.
The show, and a complementary multiplatform videogame, take place in the
near future, on an Earth that’s been
transformed, and terraformed, by a war
with a collective of aliens called the Vo-tans. Three-plus decades later, humans
and the Votans have established a truce,
though they’re far, far from friends.
Benz stars as Amanda Rosewater,
the mayor of Defiance, a bustling min-ing town that is home to both aliens and
humans. The other major characters
include Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler),
Defiance’s chief lawmaker, and Irisa
(Stephanie Leonidas), Nolan’s adopted
alien daughter. Mia Kirshner plays
Kenya, the local madam, with Graham
Greene as Rafe McCawley, who runs the
area’s largest mine, and Jaime Murray
and Tony Curran as Stahma Tarr and
Datak, a pair of scheming aliens
known as Castithans.
“Amanda has been newly
appointed, and she’s an idealist
who really believes that aliens
and humans can live together in
peace,’’ Benz says, speaking by
telephone from a hotel in Van-couver, where she’s shooting an
indie thriller. “Her main goal is
to keep Defiance an independ-ent city, not to be taken over by
the two big factions, the Earth
Republic or the Votan Collec-tive. She was the assistant to
the city’s beloved mayor, and
she was appointed when the
mayor became ill. So she’s the
unelected, newly appointed
mayor.
“It’s a constant struggle
for Amanda because she is in
a bit over her head, though
her heart is in the right place,’’
the actress says. “The right

choice isn’t always the legal choice, and
she tries to do the right thing, but there
are other people, other factions, trying to
wrestle the power away from her.
“There could be a reason as to why
she was appointed,’’ Benz adds conspira-torially. “I’m trying not to reveal too
much, but throughout the first season
you’ll see her coming into her power
and taking a stronger stance behind her
ideals.’’
Benz is quick to add that Mayor
Rosewater doesn’t merely sit in an office
and bark orders from behind a desk.
She’s in on the action, running, jump-ing and blasting guns like many of those
around her.
“Defiance is the wild west in some
ways,’’ Benz says. “Sometimes you have
to use force to maintain your power.

I really love about her as well. She’s not
afraid to take action. She’s not going to

send her townspeople into battle and not
go herself. She’s leading the charge and
at the front line, and she’s putting her
life at risk as well. Amanda wouldn’t ask
anyone to do anything that she’s not will-ing to do herself.
“It’s so much fun,’’ she says. “We
got to go through automatic-weapons
training, which was really cool. I’d had
gun training before, for different roles
I’ve done, but it’s really scary having an
automatic weapon in your hand. It’s a
very physical role, and I’d love there to
be more of it. I love doing action and
stunts, and I hope there’s more to do in
the future.’’
The actress notes, however, that
Defiance ventures well beyond the realm
of action. The series will explore gender
issues, sexuality, racism, politics and
more.
“That’s another thing I appreciate
about sci-fi, is that you can take current
issues and delve into them in a creative
way and really bring to light issues that
we might be struggling with in our real
lives, in our real world,’’ she says. “You’ll
definitely see stories unfolding about
Amanda and Kenya and their relation-ship, and about what’s going on between
Nolan and Amanda as well.
“Then you have this whole Lady
Macbeth story line with the Castithans,
with Datak and Stahma Tarr,’’ Benz says.
“And we’ll learn more about the Cas-tithans and their creepy bathing rituals.
Jaime Murray is one of my best friends,
but those bathing-ritual scenes are some
of the creepiest things I’ve ever seen.’’

Breaky Heart, starring in
Disney Channel show Han-nah Montana and raising a
famous daughter, country
singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus has
found himself at a crossroads.
In his memoir Hillbilly Heart, pub-lished this week, Cyrus writes about his
early life in Kentucky, joining his daugh-ter Miley on the 2006-11 TV show that
made her a teen idol and how he is still
hungry for success despite having moved
out of the spotlight.
Cyrus, 51, talked about the challenges
of raising Miley, his mistakes, and what
he wished he had not included in his new
book.
Q: Revisiting your life for this
book, did you have any revelations
about your journey so far?
A: The one thing that was pretty
obvious is that I’ve had a pretty crazy
life. It’s colourful ... reliving some of
those closets that I had shut, locked
and thrown away the key intentionally
because it was painful to revisit a lot of
those places - especially the loss of my
buddy Robbie Tooley, the divorce of
my parents, some of the things I went
through as a kid, a lot of that stuff was
locked up for a reason - it was painful.
But at the same time, there was some
therapy in revisiting some of those spots.
Was it hard to balance how much
you wanted to include in your book
about Miley’s story?
I think it would have been hard to
write my life story without touching on
(hers) somewhat. But at the same time,
I respect her privacy and her life, and
her world and her life is examined by
everybody and everything. For me, I’m
very respectful of her privacy, but yes ... I
think it would have been missed a bit if I
didn’t touch on some aspect of it.
I’m respectful that she’s a young hu-man being and just being a young person
in today’s world is tough enough as it is.
That makes it hard on a young person
let alone be that famous and to live her
life in that spotlight. I kind of walked
through it respectfully.”
You address the controversies you
and your wife Tish faced regarding
Miley, be it the Vanity Fair photo--

I’m not entirely sure what the future
holds ... I’m at a crossroads, but it’s a lit-tle bit different than the crossroads I’ve
been at before because now I’m doing
what I do because I love it, and doing
what I do because it’s pure passion.”
Anything you wish you
hadn’t included in the
book?
One of the worst things I did was
steal a 3D picture of Jesus for my grand-mother for Christmas. That’s terrible. I’d
give anything if I hadn’t have done that,
but I did ... that story I think I could have
left out.

I didn’t point a finger.
The first thing I do (in the
book) is I’m pointing
a finger more at myself
and saying, learn by my
mistakes. I’m not a perfect

any position to tell anyone how
to be perfect.
That’s what daddies do
- sheltering the storm, to be
there, to pick you up when you get
knocked down ... I’m not a perfect
parent and this book is not about
how to be perfect at anything. This
book is a documentation about
what my journey was, some of the
mistakes that I made and some of
the things that I did right. And every
now and then, I think failure is the
most ingredient for success.”
Why choose to write your
book now?
I’m hungry for purpose. I’m
looking for still that reason that
I bought a guitar and started a
band, to fulfil a purpose, to mani-fest destiny as to who I am and
why I am the way I am, and what
I do. I think it’s still about the
music, the song and the story.
You sound like you’re at
crossroads?
Crossroads - that is the most
accurate ... I’m hungry, I’ve got a
chance to learn more from this than

SINGER Britney Spears is geared up to release a song
titled “Ooh la la” for upcoming 3D animation movie The
Smurfs 2, a sequel to the 2011 movie The Smurfs.
The song is being produced by RCA records for the
movie, a co-production of Sony Pictures Animtion and
Columbia Pictures.
“I have always loved the Smurfs as a kid and now my
boys are the biggest Smurfs fans ever. I
wanted to surprise them with a song
in the movie. I know they’ll think it’s
Smurftastic,” Spears, a mother of two
sons, said in a statement.
The film’s director Raja Gosnell
is excited about the collaboration
too.
“I am very excited that Britney is
joining our smurfy adventure. Ooh

HRADDHA Kapoor felt no pressure while shooting for
Aashiqui 2, a sequel of 1990 hit musical Aashiqui, and
gives credit to director Mohit Suri.
She says Suri, director of films like Kalyug, Raaz - The
Mystery Continues and Murder 2, “was a task master on
the sets” but kept the atmosphere light.
“Since it’s an intense emotional love story, so he asked
us not to feel any pressure. He only wanted us to be into
the skin of the characters. And all throughout, we were so
engrossed in our roles that we felt no pressure,” said the
actress in an interview.
Daughter of Shibangi and actor Shakti Kapoor, the
actress will be seen romancing Aditya Roy Kapoor in the
movie, which is coming out on April 26.
Shraddha, who made her debut in the industry in 2010
with Teen Patti, said she enjoyed listening to Aashiqui
songs. The Mahesh Bhatt-directed film churned out chart-busters like Ek sanam chahiye, Nazar ke samne jigar ke
paa and Dheere dheere se.
“I remember the songs back then also and I used to
enjoy those songs, I used to dance on Aashiqui songs in my
room. That is one of my fond memories of the film,” said
the 24-year-old.

Campion. This year’s Cannes film festival

in Egypt, recently.
anger at the capital, Cairo, the site of
the interminable political squabbles and
street violence that have kept the tourists
away.
“We are the ones that suffer,” said Ez-zat Saad, the governor of Luxor, where in
better times tourists relax on Nile cruises
or stroll through the Great Hypostyle Hall
at the nearby Temple of Karnak. “What-ever I do on the local level, whatever the
minister of tourism does, it has a ceiling.
We will never get back what was without
political stability or security.”
Tourism plummeted in 2011 with the
fall of President Hosni Mubarak and the
unrest that followed. Some tourists have
started to return, but officials say they are

mostly beach goers rather than the more
lucrative cultural tourists who spend 10
days or more in Egypt, and spend accord-ingly during once-in-a-lifetime vacations.
Every headline about a riot in Egypt
deepens the crisis. Cairo has been the
hardest hit, with hotel occupancy fall-ing to below 15 percent or more in parts
of the city closest to protests, according
to Hani el-Shaer of the Egyptian Hotel
Association. From Cairo, the hardship
ripples across the country, affecting taxi
and horse carriage drivers, boat opera-tors, tour guides and store vendors.
“If something goes wrong in Cairo,
tourists cancel the whole trip,” said
Hisham Zaazou, Egypt’s minister of tour--
ism.
Officials have thrown up their hands
at a problem that no amount of sales-manship seems able to fix. They have
already been forced to abandon the grand
marketing campaigns of the past; there
is little money for advertisements, and
in any case, a slick television commercial
for Egypt would be useless, if followed
by a news report on the latest bloodshed,
officials said.
“The perception is that they’re not
welcome,” Zaazou said. “That the Egyp-tian people are hostile. I need to change
this.”
So the country’s promoters are focus-ing on what they say are inflated fears
about Egypt’s safety, which they are
countering with a limited effort to portray
“the reality,” Zaazou said. One plan is to
stream live video of Egypt over the Inter-net – of beaches and tourist attractions
like the Egyptian Museum – to show that
all is well in many of Egypt’s most treas-ured spaces.
It is an approach that Mexico has
tried as well in its effort to draw atten-tion to the distances, sometimes vast and
sometimes not, between a prime beach
or plaza and headline-grabbing, drug-re-lated slaughter.
“We want to give assurances that
Egypt is not just a square kilometre
where there are disturbances,” said
Nasser Hamdy, the head of the Egyptian
Tourism Authority. For now, he said,
tourism operators are trying to bypass
Cairo altogether, and turn the still-popu-lar beach resorts into transportation hubs

prices rising, the
sustained drop-off
in tourism has been
especially alarming.
Tourism provides
direct jobs for nearly
3 million people
for excursions to the ancient ruins.
Officials also are pushing to attract
tourists from new markets, to replace
the American and other visitors sitting
out the current crisis. The government
has focused on India, and especially
Iran, whose relationship with Egypt has
started to warm after decades of official
animosity.
For now, Luxor feels like a ghost
town, haunted by the trappings of its
glamorous past. Cruise ships are idle and
moored together in bunches along the
Nile. On the Corniche promenade, horse
carriage drivers scuffle among them-selves over the few tourists who emerge
from the grand Winter Palace Hotel, its
gardens and restaurants splendid – but
deserted.
A proprietor at Gaddis & Co, a sou-venir shop below the hotel that opened
in 1907, called this the most sustained
tourism crisis in Luxor since the period
between Egypt’s last wars with Israel
in 1967 and 1973. Even after militants
killed 60 tourists in 1997 at the Temple of

Queen Hatshepsut, visitors stayed away
for only a few months, said Badawy Fikri,
a guard who works at the temple.
Before the uprising, he said, “I
wouldn’t recognise a friend in the
crowds.”
On a recent Sunday, only a trickle
of visitors walked through the temple’s
colonnaded terraces. Ahmed Allam, a
frustrated tour guide, said Egypt needed
to “think outside the box,” searching, as
many do, for novel ways to make Egypt
desirable again. He noted that ancient
Egypt had lost its most tireless promoter,
the flamboyant archaeologist Zahi Ha-wass, who was sidelined after the upris-ing because of legal troubles and his ties
to the former government.
“We need to make it easier to film
movies here,” Allam said. “We need ce-lebrities. Rock ‘n’ roll bands. Weddings at
the Pyramids. This will take years.”
There were no visitors at the nearby
mortuary temple of Ramses II to see the
fallen statue linked by legend to Ozyman-dias. A group of Egyptian schoolchildren
had the Luxor museum largely to them-selves, troubled only by a group of tour
guides who strolled through – mostly,
one of the guides said, because they had
nothing better to do.
“I have colleagues who have tours
every three or four months,” said Mo-hamed Aziz, who has worked as a guide
for eight years and is on the verge of
trying something else. “Lots of people are
working without salaries. We have hopes
and dreams. Reality is something else.”
By some estimates, up to 90 percent
of people working in Luxor and the sur-rounding towns like Bairat were depend-ent on tourism, officials said. A local
charity in Bairat that provided aid to poor
families, orphans and disabled people
said that many of its most important do-nors – like hotel and cruise boat owners
– had stopped giving.
Abulatta Ibrahim, who sits on the
board of the charity, said they had
stopped construction on a community
centre that was to include a school, a
manufacturing centre for dressmakers
and a clinic. “If we don’t have tourists,”
he said, “we can’t do this.”

found home in three ecoparks located deep in the
tropical hinterland.
For Yashodhan Heblekar and his wife
Jyoti Heblekar, what began initially as
a passion soon turned into a business
converting a dry patch of land into what
is today the Butterfly Conservatory of
Goa, one of the three eco-parks, 40 km
from state capital Panaji.
“It was more of a passion than a full
time job,” Yashodhan said. “Our idea is
to provide an environment where the
butterflies would want to choose as their
home. It’s an open conservatory. If the
butterflies find it nice, they will come
and live here,” he said.
“If we start bringing busloads of
tourists, lots of vehicles and activity the
butterflies may decide not to come,” he
said, adding that a steady trickle of visi-tors was just about right.
The idea was first mooted by his wife,
a practising homeopath, who shuffles
between her twin passions.
The duo has till date documented
more than 130 different species of but-terflies within their area. “There may be
more, but we’ll claim only what we’ve
documented,” Yashodhan said.
Some of the species easily sighted
in the park are Southern Birdwing, the
biggest butterfly in India, Common
Rose, Crimson Rose, Blue Bottle, Com-mon Jay, Common Mime, Imperial,
Spot Sword Tail and the Lime Butterfly,
besides endemic species like the Malabar
Banded Peacock and the Blue Oakleaf.
The Heblekars, with the help of
another couple, Animesh and Jigisha
Sahay, have plans to expand the venture
slowly to promote an eco-friendly form
of tourism.
For now, the conservatory receives
the occasional tourist, besides wide-eyed
schoolchildren who come in hordes to
experience a different world.
While Yashodhan admited they are
yet to break even, he’s hopeful of work-ing out a commercially viable model
where both humans and butterflies can
co-exist.
“The park is essentially a conserva-tion effort. It is designed to be like a walk
in a riparian forest, so quite like how it is
in a wildlife sanctuary (and unlike a zoo),
sighting of butterflies is not guaranteed,”
Yashodhan warned. “The best time to
visit is between October and February,
that’s the time butterflies are the most,”
Yashodhan says encouraging a visit to
his new concept.
The Heblekars are not alone in who
have faith in butterflies.
Former state power minister Nirmala
Sawant, having tried her hand at
politics, now devotes her time to the
Atreya Vedic Farm located on the edge
of the Molem Wildlife Sanctuary, 75 km
from Panaji.
“All you need to do is look around
you. Springtime is the best because but-terflies are at their best,” Sawant said.
The 36-acre venture too boasts of an
exquisite collection of butterflies that are
free to flutter about.
The Goa government’s Forest De-partment is also setting up a Butterfly
Park in the Eco-tourism Complex at the
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, 90 km from
Panaji. To be spread over 5,000-sq mtrs,
the park will be home to more than 40
species of butterflies, making it a tourist
attraction. The park will have around 50
nectar plant species, a lily pond and a
rock garden, among others.

Fire With Fire
FIRE With Fire, arrives in cinemas trailing a strong whiff of failure: despite the presence of one bankable star – Bruce Willis – and a
host of recognisable names including Josh Duhamel, Rosario Dawson and Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson, it was ignominiously dumped
straight to DVD in the US. So it’s a pleasant surprise to discover that this is far from a disaster, rather a sturdy, unambitious but
thoroughly watchable action thriller.
When fireman Jeremy (Duhamel) witnesses neo-Nazi thug Hagan (Vincent D’Onofrio) carrying out a gangland hit, he agrees
to go into witness protection. But when Hagan tracks him down, he has no option but to counterattack. There’s much here that’s
lazy and idiotic: Duhamel is a plank, and Willis’s scenes seem to have been shot in an afternoon, Vinnie Jones proves he still hasn’t
made it to those acting classes and the script is filled with juicy clunkers. But with D’Onofrio and Dawson bringing the thunder,
a plot that never sits still and a handful of genuinely dramatic scenes, Fire With Fire is perfectly serviceable old-fashioned Friday
night entertainment.
