Guillermo del Toro thinks he understands why

“I think we all need to cater to a bunch of really basic,

enact socially because we are so constrained,” del Toro says.
“I think that we get to enact violence, terror, laughter and
emotions through representations of them in scary movies
or theatre or literature. They give us a safe, social purging of
very difficult, hard, dark emotions.”

Fat people can’t get slim
Health
guide
IF you are fat, you can’t get slim, say experts. Scientists have confirmed that the majority of overweight people who try to lose
weight either by cutting calories or exercising will return to their former size. They said fat people really can’t keep the weight off.
Fewer than 10 percent of the 12 million Britons who go on a diet each year succeed in losing significant amounts of weight, and
most of those who do put it all back on again within a year, the Daily Mail reported recently. The study of 25,000 people provides
further evidence of the prevalence of ‘yo-yo dieting’ where slimmers get into a cycle of losing weight and regaining it. The scientists,
from the Medical Research Council’s National Survey of Health and Development, followed 5,362 men and women from their birth
in 1946 and 20,000 from birth in 1958, measuring their weight and blood pressure and assessing their lifestyles. The researchers
found both groups began gaining weight in the 1980s and have steadily increased in size ever since. Rebecca Hardy, the council’s
programme leader on body size, said: “Once people become overweight, they continue relentlessly upwards. They hardly ever go
back down.” “A few lose weight but very few get back to normal. The best policy is to prevent people becoming overweight,” the
Mail quoted Hardy as saying.

T
HE timing and the contents
of breakfast make it perhaps
the most important meal of
the day. Whether it features
soup in Vietnam, biscotti in
Italy, or scrambled eggs in the US, breakfast revs up the body after a night’s sleep,
giving us energy and nutrients to face the
day. Studies suggest that eating breakfast
regularly is associated with good health
— and that the timing of the meal, as well
as what’s in it, matters.
EATING THE FIRST THING
As we sleep, chemicals in our bodies
are at work digesting food from the previous night. By morning, we are ready to
“break the fast” after a stretch of not eating. The blood sugar (glucose) we need to
power our muscles and brains is normally low when we wake up, and breakfast
helps replenish it. But if we miss the
day’s first meal, notes Dr David S
Ludwig, a nutrition expert at Harvardaffiliated Children’s Hospital Boston, we
may start tapping our energy reserves —
including what’s stored in our muscle.
In addition to making us feel tired,
missing breakfast is likely to increase the
temptation to reach for an unhealthy
pick-me-up snack later on and to overeat
in general.
“The whole system gets stressed,”
Ludwig explained in an interview.
“Skipping breakfast throws off the normal circadian rhythm of fasting and
feeding. Breakfast is the worst time to
skip a meal.” For that reason, eating even
a small amount within an hour or so of
waking is a good idea.
Fuelling up in the morning can be
especially important for children and
adolescents, whose metabolic needs are
relatively greater than adults. In that one
limited respect, all those breakfast cereal
commercials may be right.
Yet many American children and adolescents don’t eat breakfast. Health surveys have shown that 20 percent of
American children and 32 percent of
adolescents usually miss the morning
meal. The unhealthful pattern is not limited to the United States or to children
and teens. A review of two dozen studies
showed that between 1.7 percent and 30
percent of the population in several
developed countries, including the
United States, doesn’t eat breakfast regularly.

studies rely on people reporting what
they’ve eaten, which may not be entirely
accurate. Plus, some studies have been
sponsored in whole or part by companies
that make breakfast food, so the probreakfast outcome seems preordained.
But despite all these problems, the
amount of research suggesting that
breakfast has health benefits ends up
being pretty persuasive.
A number of studies have focused on
weight control, and researchers have
found that breakfast eaters are, on average, thinner than breakfast skippers.
Putting some protein and fiber into your
stomach first thing may curb your
appetite during the rest of the day.
An interesting study published in 2010
in The American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition examined the breakfast patterns of several thousand Australians in
1985, when they were children, and then
about 20 years later, when they were
adults. Study participants who reported
skipping breakfast both as children and
adults were heavier and had larger
waists, higher LDL cholesterol levels,
and less healthful diets than those who
reported eating breakfast at both times
in their lives.
But breakfast doesn’t necessarily get us
started on the weight-loss path. In 2011,
German researchers reported that the
size of the breakfast matters: The people
in their study who ate big breakfasts took
in more, not fewer, calories on a daily
basis. Overweight people, they politely
advised, should consider having a smaller breakfast if they want to trim their
tout nutritional virtues and beckon with
promises like “whole grain guaranteed,”
“good source of vitamin D,” and “simply
nutritious.” Some depend on bright
colours and cartoon-type characters.
Breakfast cereal is the packaged food
that’s most heavily marketed to children,
according to a study published in 2010 in
the Journal of Public Health Policy. The
researchers reported that in 2007, the
average American child saw about 758
cereal advertisements on television.
Why not reach for America’s original
breakfast cereal, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes?
Each serving has a reasonable 2 grams of
sugars and only 100 calories. But wait:
it’s made from refined grain, so it delivers little dietary fiber (1 gram) and is considered high-glycemic.
How about a cereal with whole grains,
like one of the raisin brans? One serving
of Post’s famous version has 8 grams of
dietary fiber, which is more than the 5gram threshold for “high dietary fiber”
used by Consumer Reports for rating
cereals. But a serving also harbours 19
grams (about 4.5 teaspoons) of sugars.
That’s more than what you get in a
Dunkin’ Donuts glazed donut or some of
the chocolate-flavoured cereals marketed to kids.
The search for a fiber-hearty cereal
might draw a shopper to General Mills’s
Wheat Chex. It has 5 grams of dietary
fiber per serving but also 5 grams of
sugar and 300 milligrams of sodium,
which is more than several other wholesome cereals out there.
Oatmeal brims with nutritional virtue.
The drawback there is that it takes
between five and 30 minutes to cook the
non-instant kind, which defeats one of
the main purposes of breakfast cereal:
getting the meal on the table fast before
school or work.
Many stores have a separate “natural”
foods section that may have more cereals
with whole grains as the main ingredient,
but even there, you need to be on the look
out for added sugars.
Especially with children, it helps to be
creative. To spruce up a bland low-sugar
cereal, you might garnish it with a small
amount of a sweeter cereal. You can also
strike a balance by mixing a few brands
together. Topping the mixture with fresh
fruit adds dietary value to the meal.
GOING WITH THE (WHOLE) GRAIN
Dr Ludwig and other nutritionists say
a good breakfast should include some
carbohydrates with fiber (whole grains,
fruits, or vegetables), some lean protein
sources such as eggs or yogurt (Greek
yogurt has more protein than regular),
and some healthful fats such as those in
nuts or salmon. A vegetable omelet with
a slice of whole-grain toast qualifies as a
good breakfast, as does a bowl of highfiber cereal topped with fresh fruit and
reduced-fat or soy milk, along with a
handful of almonds or walnuts.
Carbohydrates often get a bad rap in
diet books, but they belong in a good
breakfast. They have been labelled simple or complex, based on the sugar molecules they contain. Another way to classify them is by their effect on blood sugar
levels: foods with a high glycemic index
get digested quickly and cause blood
sugar levels to spike, triggering an extralarge release of insulin to bring them
back down.
Bagels, pastries, and sugary breakfast
cereals generally have a medium-to-high
glycemic index. Some research shows
that high-glycemic foods wind up making people hungry sooner.

Tribute to a champion of the Salt
Wheels
guide
A LONG-OVERDUE documentary celebrating David Abbott Jenkins’s life and times, Boys of Bonneville: Racing on a Ribbon of Salt, is now making the rounds of film
festivals, with wider distribution in the plans. Jenkins, born in Salt Lake City in 1883, was one of the first to use a motor vehicle to visit the ancient lakebed that
formed the salt flats. In 1910, before a highway to the site existed, he rode his Yale motorcycle for miles on railroad tracks to explore the 10 mile by 15 mile expanse
of white, well known as a travel hazard to continent-crossing pioneers. After a dangerous decade of setting speed records on public highways, board-surfaced oval
tracks and hill-climb courses, Jenkins concluded that his sport could thrive only with a safer place to play. In 1924-35, British drivers racing aircraft-engine streamliners on sandy shorelines in England, Wales and Florida had systematically nudged the land speed record toward 300 mph. In 1932, to pave the way for the sport’s
growth in his home state, Jenkins build a 10-mile circular course and drove a nearly stock Pierce-Arrow V-12 roadster solo for 24 hours straight, covering 2,710
miles to set an unofficial speed record of just under 113 mph. The next year, now properly sanctioned by the American Automobile Association, Jenkins broke dozens
of records with his Pierce-Arrow in a single day, a feat that convinced the British of Bonneville’s merits as a course for speed trials. In 1935, Sir Malcolm Campbell
raised the land speed record past 300 mph on the Salt Flats. Jenkins, a deeply religious Mormon who consumed no alcohol or tobacco, was Salt Lake City’s mayor
in 1940-44. In 1950, he logged his highest speed, 196 mph for two hours, in the Mormon Meteor III, powered by a Curtiss Conqueror aircraft engine. In 1956, he
and his son Marvin co-drove a new Pontiac sedan at Bonneville for 24 hours at an average speed of 118 mph.
WILD MUSTANGS PACK LOADS
OF BRUTE POWER
JOHN PEARLEY HUFFMAN
NYT SYNDICATE
I
N a world of infinite resources, one
without responsibilities or consequences, I would drive nothing but
V-8 Ford Mustangs. Each morning
I’d get out of bed, fire up one of my
perfectly toned muscle machines and
spin its rear tires until great clouds of
burned rubber billowed skyward.
I’d spend the day racing all challengers,
quitting only when it was time to head
home for some sleep – and to dream of
doing it all again the next day.
In the real world, my life does not live
up to these Mustang fantasies, but that’s
not because of any shortcoming of the
car.
On the contrary: The 2011 Mustangs
were impressive from the moment they
went on sale in April 2010 with fresh
engines and transmissions. The V-6
Mustang, reviewed on these pages last
year, proved to be a well-balanced package, with a 3.7-litre engine that delivered
305-horsepower – and 31 mpg, by the
EPA’s rating, on the highway.
While that V-6 is a popular – and in
most ways entirely fulfiling – choice
among buyers, historical precedent
demands that a selection of V-8 engines
is available. Brute power remains a main
attraction for the Mustang and its colleagues, a market segment that today has
shrunk to include only the Chevrolet
Camaro and Dodge Challenger as its
other surviving members; as a class, it
accounts for far fewer sales than when it
was given the label of pony cars in the
1960s.
Ford has stepped up with a pair of new
V-8s: a 412-horsepower 5-litre engine for
the Mustang GT and a 550-horsepower
5.4-litre force-fed for the Shelby GT500,
both available in summer-ready convertible form.
The V-8s elevate the Mustang’s performance so that the GT now closely
matches the 426-horsepower Chevrolet
Camaro SS, and the GT500 closely parallels the supercharged Camaro ZL1, due
next year.
From outside, it’s the 5.0 emblems on
the 2011 Mustang GT’s fenders that distinguish the car, giving it a direct, nostalgic appeal to the generations of homegrown mechanics who grew up hot-rodding the 5-litre Mustangs built from 1979
to 1993.
But those cars ran an all-iron V-8, an
engine whose family tree had roots
reaching back to 1962. The design used
pushrods to operate two valves for each
cylinder, and its performance in factoryinstalled form peaked with a 240-horsepower version used in the 1994-95
Mustang Cobra.

convertible form
5.0 is far more than a warmed-over
Compared with the Mustang coupe,
version of the underwhelming 4.6-litre
“modular” V-8s used in the Mustang GT
since 1996.
But it is related. What it has in common with the 315-horsepower engine of
the 2010 Mustang GT is a basic geometry
that allows it to be machined and assembled on the existing production lines in
Windsor, Ontario.
Though the latest 5.0 lacks up-to-theminute features like direct fuel injection,
it absolutely rips to its 7,000 rpm limit.
It’s giddy, glorious, romping fun, exhaling magnificent sounds through its stainless steel exhaust headers.
And the GT is quick. In tests done by
Insideline.com, part of the Edmunds
car-buying website, a GT coupe equipped
with the sublime Getrag 6-speed manual
transmission
thumped
to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds and ran
through the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds
at 107.3 mph. (The coupe is 115 pounds
lighter than the 3,720-pound convertible,
according to Ford.)
Despite its capacity for furious acceleration, the Mustang GT’s electronic throttle is sweetly progressive, enabling the
engine to trawl through traffic with dignity. The EPA rates the manual-shift 2011
GT at a respectable 17 mpg in the city and
26 mpg on the highway.
With a solid rear axle – independent
suspension is apparently too adventurous
a concept – in every current Mustang, the
chassis specifications seem primitive, at
least on paper. But
the convertible’s structure feels a bit
soggy, as if there’s a hairline fracture running diagonally across its floor. It’s more
noticeable with the soft top up than
down.
Otherwise, the GT convertible drives
the same as the GT coupe. It’s light on its
feet, responds quickly to steering inputs
and approaches its limits predictably and
gently, even with the traction control system switched off.
But as lovable and huggable as the
Mustang GT is, it feels as if time is passing it by. The Mustang is a more practical
car than the Camaro and easier to live
with than the overgrown Dodge
Challenger. But its trunk is dinky, the
rear seat is all but useless and the wide
doors swing open into neighbouring cars
in parking lots.
More problematic is the convertible
version of the Mustang GT’s supercharged brother, the license-shredding
Shelby GT500.
The acceleration of the GT500 borders
on hallucinogenic; Insideline.com measured a GT500 coupe hitting 60 mph in
4.1 seconds and running through the
quarter-mile in 12.4. It slams forward so
ferociously that the hemispheres of your
brain feel as if they’re sloshing apart in
your skull.
Simply blip the throttle and the torque
– 510 pound feet at peak – seems to fold
the GT500’s structure over on itself.
What’s soggy in the GT’s structure
becomes limp linguini under the GT500’s
supercharged onslaught. This is way
more engine than car.
But it is the most powerful engine ever
installed on a Ford assembly line – discounting the wartime production of B-24
Liberator bombers – with 550-horsepower available at 6,200 rpm.
While the aluminum engine takes
weight off the car’s front end, and some
suspension retuning makes the 2011
GT500 more civilised than the 2010 edition, this isn’t a car for beginners. Turn
off the electronic traction control and
even a part-throttle stab will overwhelm
the Goodyear Eagle F1 285/35ZR19 rear
tires. Hit a divot under hard acceleration
– even with the traction control on – and
the rear end will slam sideways into the
next lane.
Of course, in the hands of skilled driver – a very skilled driver – the GT500 is
scaldingly fast. Yet it would be even
quicker with a suspension that put more
of the power on the pavement.
What’s light and delightful in the
Mustang GT is brutish in the GT500. It
takes a concentrated effort to haul the
GT500’s TREMEC 6-speed manual
transmission into gear. The steering has
to wrestle with wide 255/40ZR19 front
tires. The throttle reacts more suddenly.
It’s no longer entertaining; it’s a spectacle. And after a while that’s just
exhausting.
Beyond that, the throwback plastic interior pieces, indifferently tailored upholstery, often indecipherable instruments
and cheap controls that are all tolerable in
the $38,695 Mustang GT ($42,530 as
tested) are flat inexcusable in the $54,495
GT500 ($60,330 as tested).
No paddle-shifted, computer-controlled, automated transmission can
match the elemental experience of shifting a fine manual gearbox behind a great
V-8 engine. The Mustang GT is one of an
ever-shrinking number of new cars at
any price to offer this pleasure.

Anne Hathaway open to marriage
Kim delays honeymoon plans
ACTRESS Anne Hathaway, who has been in a relationship
with Adam Schulman for three years, says she is finally open
to getting married. “I am open to marriage, actually. I just
went through a phase where I wanted to look at it from every
angle to make sure that I wasn’t just falling in step with
some kind of prescribed fantasy,” contactmusic.com quoted
her as saying. “I was at my best friend’s wedding just two
days ago, and I watched this person who I love like a sister,
commit herself to a man who she loves, and I watched how
happy it made her,” she said. ‘Weddings are important
because they celebrate life and possibility’,” she added.
REALITY TV star Kim Kardashian, who got
married to rocker Kris Humphries this August
20, won’t be able to go for honeymoon any
time soon because of her busy work schedule.
“With her work schedule it’s the earliest she
can get away. Kris is not over the moon,”
femalefirst.co.uk quoted a source as saying.
The couple tied the knot at a $20 million mansion in Santa Barbara, California, which is
owned by former Google chief executive officer
Eric Schmidt.

ENNIFER Lopez has

American Idol, Fox television
officials said on Wednesday,
ending months of speculation
about her return.

J
ENNIFER Love Hewitt caused quite a stir on
Twitter last month when she wrote, “Watching
The Bachelorette! I love u Ben!! Take this rose
I have for u! Choose me!!!!:).”
However, the former Ghost Whisperer star says she
didn’t mean anything by her enthusiastic Tweet, and
that ensuing rumours of a romance with The
Bachelorette cast-off are just that - rumours.
“I was looking for
something pop culture to sort of tweet
about — I’m new to
the Twitter situation.
I wanted to have fun
with the tweeters out
there in the world,”
Jennifer told Ryan
Seacrest in an interview on his KIIS FM
radio
show
on
Wednesday,
when
asked if she and Ben
Flajnik are dating.
“So, I sent out funny
tweets about Ben F,
and then it got all sort
of like, blown out of proportion or whatever, and now
it’s like — the rumour mill is crazy.
“I have nothing to say except I’m totally single,” she
continued. “I don’t know why people are making such
a big deal. You know, it was timely.”
Despite her denial, Jennifer was recently spotted in
San Francisco with Ben himself, but the actress
chalked their meeting up to chance.
“We did meet, but totally by coincidence,” she told
Ryan.
“Did you make out with him?” Ellen K, Ryan’s radio
co-host, asked the actress.
“rumours are rumours,” Jennifer answered with a
laugh, avoiding the question.
One question Jennifer didn’t hesitate to answer was
whether producers have asked her to be the next
Bachelorette.
“No, they didn’t,” she said.
As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com,
Jennifer split from actor/director Alex Beh in May.
Reports of their romance first surfaced in July 2010.
Past beaus of JLove’s include Jamie Kennedy,
Carson Daly, John Mayer, John Asher and Ross
McCall, to whom she was engaged.
which will begin airing on
January 22, Fox said.
“Having both Jennifer and
Steven return to Idol in 2012
alongside Randy is such a positive reflection on what was a
wonderful and hugely successful
season last year, and everyone is
delighted,” the show’s creator
Simon Fuller said in a statement.
Lopez had said earlier this
summer that she was undecided
about whether to sign on for a
second season of the top-rated
singing show, which boosted its
audiences last season after
revamping the panel.
American Idol also has been
good for the actress and singer,
whose career had slumped since
she took time off to have twins in
2008.
She topped People magazine’s
“most beautiful” list earlier this
year and had a top 10 hit with
her dance single On the Floor.
However, Lopez announced in
July that she was divorcing her
husband of seven years, Latin
singer Marc Anthony.

Kajal Aggarwal unwinds post-Singham success
ACTRESS Kareena Kapoor, who is gearing up for the release of
her new film Bodygaurd with Salman Khan, will felicitate the
real-life minders of Bollywood stars. Kareena is planning to meet
the bodyguards of Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Imran Khan,
Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar and felicitate
them for their work, commitment and dedication towards the
protection of the stars. Bodyguard is romantic action film directed
by Siddique and is a remake of the director’s 2010 Malayalam
movie of the same name. Salman had asked Shera, his bodyguard for 15 years, to launch the promo of the film. The film is
being produced by Atul Agnihotri and is slated to release on Eid.
KAJAL AGGARWAL who is originally a Mumbaikar has managed to
establish herself as one of the biggest actresses down South. And
now with her debut in Bollywood, she did manage to make a lot of
heads turn. After the success of Singham, Kajal has decided to gift
herself a nice holiday after a long time to Paris. Says a source, “Kajal

“He had to jump from 150

a bike of 150 kg, which again
he did without cables,” said
Amin, who was also the
action director of Dhoom.
“It has action like Satya
but is completely stylish,” he
added.
Amin shoots down reports

there will be incredible action

remake of The Italian Job.
“I don’t know Dhoom 3,
but my Players is coming
now. It’s a very different
film. It’s The Italian Job,
but I tried to make all the
action sequences much bigger and better than The
Italian Job,” said Amin.
Interestingly, Amin stays
