JACK & JILL
Katie rolls on a
Laughter Hill
NANCY MILLS
HOLLYWOOD WATCH
“W
E don’t have a lot of shouting at my house,” Katie
Holmes says, contrasting
her family life with those
of her characters in two
new films.
In the family comedy Jack and Jill, scheduled
for release on November 11, Holmes plays the wife
of Jack (Adam Sandler), an advertising executive
whose life is disrupted when his twin sister (also
Sandler) comes for her annual Thanksgiving visit.
“Jill is sweet, but she gets on Jack’s nerves,”
Holmes says. “As his wife I try to keep Jack and
the household calm.”
In the dark drama The Son of No One, now in
theatres, it’s Holmes’ character who stirs up the
household. Kerry is married to a troubled cop
(Channing Tatum) who won’t explain what’s
bothering him.
“This film explores what happens in a relationship when there’s no communication,” Holmes
says. “Kerry gets really upset and yells because
he’s not telling her anything. I can relate to both
characters because I understand them.”
Speaking by telephone from her East Coast
home, Holmes sounds more like her upbeat character in Jack and Jill.
“As a mom and a wife,” she says, “I do a lot to
keep all the balls in the air. For every woman it’s a
balance, and it’s a wonderful role to have.”
At the end of a long day of meetings, Holmes is
thinking about dinner for herself, husband Tom
Cruise and their daughter, 5-year-old Suri.
Clanking around in the kitchen, she is wondering
whether to prepare something, order out or
maybe go out.
“I cook every now and then,” she says. “I’m
good at macaroni and cheese. I’m not bad at
spaghetti Bolognese, and I can do a good omelet
and a good croque monsieur (grilled ham-andcheese sandwich).”
The 32-year-old Holmes and the 49-year-old
Cruise, who will celebrate their fifth anniversary
on November 18, are also part-time parents to 18year-old Isabella and 16-year-old Connor, his children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman.
“My perspective has changed for the better now
that I’m a mother,” Holmes says. “My heart has
opened up. There’s more love than I ever thought
was possible, and that’s helped me have a greater
understanding of characters.”
She has managed to juggle career and family,
she says, through efficient time management.
“I work a lot at night, when everyone’s asleep,”
Holmes says. “I do a lot of homework before I
start shooting. I try to prepare as much as possible. Every time I get on set with a new character,
it’s incredibly overwhelming. I don’t yet know
what that character’s going to be, which is challenging – and also a lot of fun.
“I love sharing my work with my family,” she
adds. “I know that, if I’m organised, everything
will go pretty smoothly and I can handle a lot
throughout the day. Nothing suffers.”
Holmes took time off during the two years after
Suri’s birth, but since then has worked steadily –
on Broadway in a revival of Arthur Miller’s All My
Sons (2008) and in the films Mad Money (2008),
The Romantics (2010), The Extra Man (2010)
and the current Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and
A still from the movie Jack and Jill.
“I was excited to do a comedy
and go into that world. I’ve never
been part of a comedy team. I
liked finding the rhythm of a joke,
seeing the rhythm of a scene,
figuring out where the funny in it
is and what is funny”
The Son of No One. Earlier this year she played
Jacqueline Kennedy in the miniseries The
Kennedys, and on Halloween she appeared on
How I Met Your Mother as Slutty Pumpkin, a
character previously much mentioned but never
seen.
“Ted (Josh Radnor) had been dreaming about
Slutty Pumpkin for many years,” Holmes says,
“but he’d never seen her face. It was hard to make
a pumpkin sexy, but we gave it a whirl. It was fun
to laugh for a day.”
Though she has previously appeared most often
in dramas, Holmes will return to comedy opposite
Chace Crawford in the upcoming Responsible
Adults.
“I play a woman studying to be a doctor who’s
confronted with her past,” she says. “She was this
guy’s baby sitter, and they meet when he’s older
and they kind of like each other.”
Meanwhil Cruise also has kept busy, most
notably as the producer/star of the upcoming
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
“Being together as a family is really important,”
Holmes says. “But we both like to work, so we
don’t have that rule that, when one of us is working, the other stays home.”
Recently Cruise was in the news for one of the
stunts from his upcoming movie, dangling from
the world’s tallest building in Dubai.
“As his wife I found it a little nerve-racking,
knowing that’s what he was doing,” Holmes
admits. “I also trust him completely. His dedication to his work is unbelievable. He
inspires me.”
At the time Holmes was shooting Jack and Jill,
a different kind of movie for her but one that
she relished.
“Adam’s movies make me laugh,” she
says. “I was excited to do a comedy
and go into that world. I’ve never
been part of a comedy team. I liked
finding the rhythm of a joke, seeing
the rhythm of a scene, figuring out
where the funny in it is and what is
funny.”
Holmes cut her teeth in musicals at
her Catholic girls’ high school in Toledo,
Ohio. The youngest of five children of a
lawyer and a homemaker, she already had
been accepted at Columbia University when
she decided to go to Los Angeles and do a little
auditioning. Within a few days she was hired for
a supporting role in Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm
(1997) and also caught the attention of the producers of Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003). Instead
of moving into a college dormitory, she spent the
next six years in North Carolina playing girl-nextdoor Joey Potter on the popular series.
Having played a sophisticated New York teen in
The Ice Storm, the young actress went on to
Wonder Boys (2000), in which she played a college student with a crush on her professor
(Michael Douglas), and Pieces of April (2003), a
critically praised indie in which she played a wayward daughter. She picked up blockbuster credentials in Batman Begins (2005), playing a
childhood friend of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale)
who is now an assistant district attorney.
Although she acknowledges the role luck has
played in her career, Holmes also credits her work
ethic.
“The other day I heard someone say, ‘How do
you spell success? W-O-R-K,”’ she says. “You can’t
sit back and hope something happens. I’ve always
been aggressive. You have to keep pushing, and
you can never stop believing in yourself. Every little thing you do does make a difference. But luck
is important too.”
For guidance Holmes turns to her mother.
“She taught me so much,” the actress says, “and
she handles so much without really letting everybody know. I email her every single day.”
A good source of career advice is also to be
found across the breakfast table: Cruise has been
a movie star since Risky Business (1983), when
Holmes was 5.
“Of course we talk about everything,” she says.
“He’s very wise, and he’s been doing this a long
time. I ask him questions, and I listen to what he
says.”
Though still young at 32, Holmes is old enough
to look back at her early years in show business
with some perspective.
“I wish I’d known to enjoy every moment,” she
says. “As a young person I was trying to catch up
and be older. I wish I could have told myself, ‘Hey,
enjoy this right now.”’
She’s grown out of the teen roles that made her
a star, but the actress is confident that her best
days still lie ahead.
“Now that I’m in my 30s,” she says, “I feel like
I’m ready for parts that I wasn’t ready for in my
20s. I’m excited to explore women my age and tell
those stories.
“Some people freak out when they turn 30,”
Holmes concludes, “but I felt stronger. There are
no limitations. I’ve earned the right to do what I
want to do.”

Witherspoon gives up snakeskin bag
Amanda Seyfried happy being single
AFTER People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) condemned Reese
Witherspoon for carrying a snakeskin bag, the actress gave up on the python
skin Chloe bag. “We’ve long known Reese to be a kind person, so we’re pleased
and not surprised that she is hanging up her python bag for good,” said a statement from PETA. “We hope Reese’s honest mistake will serve as a reminder for
all of us to be extra-certain that what we’re buying is mock croc or fake snake,”
it added. The group will send, Witherspoon, who was voted one of the world’s
sexiest vegetarians by PETA in 2006, a bunch of flowers, reports said.
ACTRESS Amanda Seyfried is enjoying her life being single and says
having a boyfriend is “so much responsibility”. It changes you a little
bit every time you either break someone’s heart or get your own broken,” mirror.co.uk quoted Seyfried as saying. “For the first time in my
life I’m really happy to be unattached because I realise there is so
much responsibility to having a partner,” she added. The “Mamma
Mia!” star spent two years in a long-distance relationship with her
British co-star Dominic Cooper, before the pair split.

Top tips for a perfect family vacation
Travel
guide
1. YOU can keep boredom down to a minimum by thinking ahead and bringing some favourite games, videos and books
along on the trip. This is very important for kids as they like to have things to do and the hours spent travelling to a faraway
destination can seem to just drag for them. 2. Don’t try to do everything when you arrive at your destination. Some families
just feel that they have to be constantly on the run to make it the perfect family vacation. At the end of the trip you can actually feel more tired and drained than if you had not had the vacation at all 3. Be flexible in your scheduling. Some folks are
extremely scheduled in their professional life and they bring that same mindset to their family vacation getaway. Just relax, and
enjoy your time together as circumstances allow. 4. Budget your vacation in advance and keep an eye on the money that is
being spent each day. There is nothing that introduces more stress in parents that watching the money that they brought go
way too quickly and not knowing where it is going. 5. You don’t have to do everything together as a family either. Of course,
you also don’t want to do everything separately. Just trying to make every event fit everyone just usually doesn’t work too well.
I have returned

Italy, I am slowly reclaiming those childhood spots

The beach at La Pelosa
A journey down the memory
lane in Sardinia
ONDINE COHANE
NYT SYNDICATE
N a mid-September day in
the Maddalena archipelago,
off the northeast shore of
Sardinia, autumn still felt far
off. The temperature hovered
around 85 degrees, but a light
Mediterranean wind kept our sailboat
moving briskly and the ship’s captain,
Luca Imbagliazzo, and me pleasantly cool.
At Spargi, one of the many undeveloped
islands that make up the national park
that spans the archipelago, we anchored
at Cala Conneri, a small white-sand cove
protected by large boulders on each side.
There were no other boats, and I dived
into a perfectly clear turquoise sea.
I first visited Sardinia as a child in the
1970s. My parents had always insisted
that “the only way to see Sardinia is by
boat,” and, indeed, they owned a gorgeous
sailboat that they docked over many summers in Porto Cervo, on the southeastern
coast of the island.
I remember fondly the crystal-clear
water where you could see every detail of
your toes, even when waist deep in the
salty sea. We would moor ourselves in
deserted coves like the one in Spargi, and
I would swim to the beach in the company
of our three small dogs, flopping with
them on the powder-soft white sand.
They were my constant companions;
after a number of near drownings, I was
periodically harnessed to the mast along
with them during the more choppy
stretches. We’d all look anxiously toward
the horizon as the boat would start to tilt
alarmingly; my father, normally a sensible
man, seemed to have an uncanny way of
guiding us into storms rather than away
from them.
Now that I have returned as an adult to
live in Italy, I am slowly reclaiming those
childhood spots with my son, now almost
2 years old. Some turned bittersweet after
my father died. When I revisited Sardinia
and La Maddalena a few years back, I
would find myself looking wistfully for our
boat’s name among the portside yachts
(the boat was sold soon after his death in
the early ‘80s, and in 1983 we moved full
time to the United States). The mythical
The Villa Mosca on the island of Sardinia
O
island was wrapped up in a
memory of a man I lost too
early.
But my travel preferences
have also changed. Along with
the happy memories of swimming and exploring the coastline
are the ones of being in tight
quarters with a family of big personalities for months at a time (a
few times my sister and I took refuge
in the dinghy when parental tiffs broke
out).
Daytime boat rides are quite enough for
me now, and I prefer the sense of control
that comes with planning an itinerary that
mixes time on land and sea. A hotel room
at night is more comfortable for me than
sleeping below deck, especially with a
squirmy toddler and a seasick husband in
tow.
But despite its picture-perfect seaside
spots, Sardinia has suffered from both
overdevelopment in certain places and, in
others, a
lack of the sort of hotel options that appeal
to me as an adult.
Until recently, the only good ones were
those clustered around the sparkling
Costa Smeralda, where celebrities and
Italian A-listers convene in August. (Many
of their yachts have the kind of amenities
and staff usually found at five-star hotels,
which partly explains the
limited choice in lodging.)
But despite their great natural beauty, the island’s
many other parts are not
well known, especially to
American tourists.
That is beginning to
change. It’s because of recent
hotel openings that I have
started to rediscover the island’s
other regions, especially in the
northern, less-visited section of the
island. La Maddalena Hotel and Yacht
Club, where I stayed during my
September visit, is a 100-room property
that has taken over the island’s former
Boat Arsenal and caters to a clientele
who, like me, wants that mix of comfort
and sea access.
Boat excursions can be booked during
the day from the adjacent marina. They
run from a vintage sailboat for 12 to a
smaller motorised dinghy. The property
also has plenty of land-based amenities –
a spa, a gym, two restaurants – and a
beautiful wood-deck pool area that looks
out over the water.
Despite a somewhat corporate vibe, it
suited my purposes well. And it is a gateway into one of Italy’s most naturally
beautiful areas.
“Each bay is different,” said
Imbagliazzo, a native of La Maddalena,
on our trip through the archipelago.
“The rocks in the water turn from white
to shades of pink to black, the sand from
the finest white powder to gray smooth
stones, and the sea from a perfectly clear
shade to a cerulean blue.” Equally
appealing was the juxtaposition of the
sky, mountains and water; it seemed
that the rugged backdrop of the
American West had dropped right into
the sea.
The sheer diversity of the coastline continued after a short ferry ride to Sardinia’s
main island and on the drive to Alghero, a
16th-century fortified town to the northwest. As the road skirted above the white
arc of Cala Pischina we could not resist
pulling over for a quick swim.
Small reefs offshore create perfect
snorkelling conditions and natural swimming pools. After a dip we sat at a plastic
table in the shade and ate panini stuffed
with local Pecorino sheep cheese and
sipped cold Ichnusas, the preferred
Sardinian beer, that we’d bought from a
food truck parked above the beach. The
truck’s owner blasted Sardinian folk tunes
from old cassette tapes. With a perfect
view overlooking the bay, we found it hard
to tear ourselves away.
Our next stop was the new Villa Mosca,
a villa in the Liberty style (Italy’s answer
to art deco) that has been reinvented as a
boutique hotel in Alghero. For me
Sardinia’s greatest joy lies in seeing
Italians’ childlike appreciation of the
beach. At La Palosa, near Stintino at the
northwest tip of the island, a picturesque
ruined stone tower was the backdrop as
my son played with the other toddlers and
parents on the blindingly white sand. We
walked out together into the crystal sea,
and I noticed him looking down at his
toes, chortling with glee. My father would
be so happy.

Help with heels
Fashion
guide
NOTHING makes a leg look better than a sexy patent leather 4-inch stiletto. Not only do they lengthen the leg and give woman a more towering stature, but
they just look sexy. Of course the trade-off is that those sexy little shoes can do some serious injury to your legs and feet. No matter how great they look, constantly wearing high heels can cause damage and pain from bunions to shrinking your calf muscles to sprained ankles from falling. Here are a few tips to help
with heels. 1 Make sure your shoes fit properly. 2. Feet swell sometimes. Before wearing new shoes, stretch them out first by wearing them with socks
around the house. 3. Get cushiony shoe inserts for extra padding 4. Scuff up the bottom if there is no traction so you don’t slip and twist your ankle. 5.
Stretch out your calves.6. Wear open toe shoes to relieve pressure and scrunching on your toes. We’re not suggesting you never wear heels again; they are
fun, sexy and make your legs look hot. But if you’re going to be doing a lot of walking or you’ll be on your feet all day, bring some flats with you.
Going crazy over
Manolo Blahnik shoes
GUY TREBAY
NYT SYNDICATE
HIS is the tale of the little
stiletto that could, a shoe
that in the long-ago days of
the luxury-goods boom
scampered to the top of a
rarefied heap. It was just a
handful of years ago that the name of
Manolo Blahnik, a 68-year-old London
cobbler born in the Canary Islands, was
familiar only to hard-core fashion
hunters and residents of ZIP code 10021.
Then a funny thing happened: Sex and
the City.
As man-crazy as the character Carrie
Bradshaw was on the long-running series,
she was just as obsessive about what
Vanity Fair once termed every woman’s
favorite phallic symbol, shoes. Lust for
footwear seldom featured as a continuing
television plot line before the show came
along. Yet such was the shoe-mania of the
character played by Sarah Jessica Parker
that, merely by name-checking Manolo
Blahnik, she made his a household
name.
One sign of the familiarity U.S.
women
developed
with
Blahnik’s classically styled
shoes – so comfortable, some
claimed, you could wear
them to scale Everest – was
a 2007 survey by Women’s
Wear Daily and the trade
journal Footwear News. In
it, 37 percent of the 2,000
consumers
canvassed
about their buying habits
conceded that they’d willingly bungee-jump off the
Golden Gate Bridge in
exchange for a lifetime supply of Manolos.
And if they had, they probably would have met Manolo on
the way down.
Soon after the 2007 survey
appeared, Blahnik’s name and label took
a style dive, his often kittenish designs
supplanted by the more aggressive efforts
of a new crop of shoemakers, people like
Nicholas Kirkwood, Brian Atwood and
Christian Louboutin.
It was Louboutin who most effectively
hijacked Manolo Blahnik’s thunder and a
chunk of his market, using an arsenal of
gaud and ostentation, shoes that came
studded, strapped, buckled and fur-covered and that were also made instantly
identifiable by his signature red soles.
(The same soles have embroiled him in a
long-running trademark infringement
dispute with the fashion house Yves Saint
Laurent.)
Unlike
Blahnik,
Louboutin seemed
to revel in borderline vulgarity.
What, after all,
is a red sole
but

Lust for footwear seldom featured
as a continuing television plot line
before the show came along. Yet
such was the shoe-mania of the
character played by Sarah Jessica
Parker that, merely by namechecking Manolo Blahnik,
she made his a
household name
comedian Minnie Pearl’s custom of wearing her hat with the price tag attached?
“It was a chic idea for a minute,” said
George Malkemus, president of Manolo
Blahnik USA. “You wore a red sole, and
everyone knew you spent $1,200 or
$1,400 for your shoes. And I would say
there was a period when certain customers abandoned us and moved into
that world.”
But fashion, as we all know, is nothing
if not fickle; Heidi Klum is merely reporting fact when she notes each week on
Project Runway that one day you’re in
and the next day you’re out. So it should
come as no surprise that, suddenly, signs
are everywhere that Blahnik is back in
style.
When Kate Moss married last summer,
she was shod in a pair of classic Manolos.
When Parker was photographed in a multipage page pictorial for last August’s
Vogue, she
wore
Manolo’s
BB pump exclusively. When Marc Jacobs
showed his spring 2012 collection in
September in New York, he paid sly homage to Manolo and the designer’s classic
high-heel Mary-Janes.
And at the recent spring 2012 shows in
Paris, the style of footwear dominating
runways had a lot less in common with
the stunt shoes that held sway in recent
seasons – the ones compulsively namechecked by Real Housewives and in songs
by J. Lo, and that garnered Louboutin
full-scale profiles in The New Yorker and
Vanity Fair – than with the simple and
ladylike shoe Blahnik has designed since
his competitors were in their teens.
“In the fight for the shoe summit,”
Parker said, Manolo is suddenly on top
again.
The reasons seem clear. Not only did
“the cult of the ugly shoe have to end,” as
Andre Leon Talley, a contributing editor
of Vogue, recently noted, but unbridled
ostentatious spending has come to look a
lot less chic when nearly one in 10
Americans is unemployed.
Understandably, most Americans
might struggle to understand the irresistible allure of a shoe whose cost is
equal to about a quarter of the average annual household clothes budget for a family of four. Yet for retail
analysts, the current rush on
Manolo Blahnik shoes is an
encouraging sign for the economy, over all.
“The upper end
of the market is
driving
much of the growth” in retail, said
Marshal Cohen, chief analyst at the NPD
Group, a consumer research firm. And
surprisingly, despite a near constant din
of doomful economic news, that market is
by all accounts robust.
“Luxury is strong,” said Mary Lou
Quinlan, the chief executive of Just Ask a
Woman, a marketing company with
clients like Clairol and GlaxoSmithKline.
“There’s an element among women who
are still doing well in their jobs of, ‘I
deserve it, I need it, I’ve got to have my
fix.”’
As recently as a year ago, that shoe fix
might have been delivered by Jimmy
Choo, Sergio Rossi, Pierre Hardy, Brian
Atwood, Walter Steiger, Nicholas
Kirkwood or any of the other high-end
players who got in on the lucrative market in keeping women well shod.
It might have had bondage straps or
menacing spikes, ornamental elements
that made it seem, during one recent season, as if Miuccia Prada had found
inspiration in Rosa Klebb, Ian
Fleming’s Cold War villain who
secreted stiletto blades in
her soles.
On certain Louboutin
shoes, heels rose above
15 centimeters, the better to accommodate
thick wedges and
platforms and to justify prices that crept
toward $2,000 a
pair. “Louboutins
were just so much
cooler, spikier and
more high-fashion,”
said the writer Molly
Jong-Fast, a self-professed shoe fiend. “If
you’re going to spend
$800 for a pair of shoes,
you want something cutting edge, not something
you’ll see everyone wearing at
shul.”
Curiously, the re-emergence of
Blahnik’s restrained “classic” styles
counters an apparent trend sometimes
noted by footwear historians: The more
depressed the economy, the more vertiginous the shoe. “But this recession has
dragged on so long” that the playful vulgarity of wearing sinister and gravitydefying shoes is seen as unseemly, said
Elizabeth Semmelhack, senior curator of
the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. “If the
first wave was an overexuberant expression of wealth, the next is of ostentatious
restraint.”
Or, as Mary Lou Quinlan of Just Ask a
Woman said, “It’s tacky to strut around in
your red-soled shoes when other people
are trying not to get a pink slip.”
Yet it’s style, and not political correctness, that is driving a return to Manolo
Blahnik. “For classic, timeless Jackie O
dressing, it’s always back to Manolo,” said
Lisa Bytner, a Manhattan publicist who
owns 20 pairs. “I bought Louboutins to be
in on the platform fad and now they’re
sitting in the closet because they hurt.” In
Manolos, say fans like Bytner, “I can jog
down the street and run for a taxi.”
Why bother, Louboutin said in a recent
interview timed to coincide with the
release of a lavish 304-page coffee-table
book (Rizzoli, $150) celebrating his
designs? “I don’t have the pretensions
that they are there to fulfill every need
that people have,” he told The New York
Post. “Who wants to run, anyway, really?”
Arriving for her Vogue shoot last
spring, Parker entered a dressing room
filled with the latest styles and a wall of
shoes secured for the sitting by Tonne

Perry’s new perfume inspired by tour
Lohan to re-shoot Playboy pics
KATY Perry says her new perfume Meow has been inspired by
her world tour. The Firework hitmaker has been working on
Meow, the follow-up to her debut perfume Purr and admitted
the sweetness of the scent comes from her stage set, which
resembles a giant confectionery world, reports
femalefirst.co.uk. “Purr to me was a little bit more floral, and
Meow is a little bit more sweet. It was probably because of the
California Dreams tour that it was more of the confectionery
world, because everything I’ve seen for the last year has been
like cotton-candy scented or huge peppermints or massive
gummy bears,” she said.
LINDSAY Lohan has been asked to re-shoot her
Playboy pictures after magazine executives decided
they wanted a new theme for the nude spread.
The 25-year-old actress has been paid around $1 million to pose naked in the world famous men’s magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “Lindsay was told that
the Playboy executives wanted to go in another direction with her shoot so they asked her to come back for
a second time,” said a source. “The first pictures of
Lindsay weren’t exactly what they wanted so they have
a new theme that they want to shoot,” he added.

O matter what criticisms are
levied on Hollywood, one good
thing about it is that it often
reflects reality around and is
rooted to its own ideals and traditions.
Hence, topical incidents find a reflection
soon enough in its films, unlike Bollywood
N
that is perennially free floating in a nonexistent hyperspace. Thus, its war produces
war films and its recent economic depression, has well, produced depressing films.
Tower Heist, incidentally, is a funny film
about this depression.
After realising that all their money has
been scammed by an investment banker
who is under arrest and investigation, the
workers of an expensive high-rise building
where the banker resides, scheme to get
back what is rightfully theirs. Since none of

Though funnymen Ben Stiller and
Eddie Murphy helm this film, it is not
entirely a comedy. The first half is funny,
while in the second, it metamorphoses
into a racy action thriller. The transition
is seamless. And that is one of its
strengths.
In terms of its social responsibility,
though, this one does not claim any, films
like Tower Heist will go a long way in the
cinematic exorcism of many of its nations
evils. There are millions like the workers in
the tower, whose entire life savings were
wiped out by corporate greed that caused
the recent economic recession. The film
will perhaps provide a much needed
catharsis to those who have been denied
the same by real life.
And to provide audiences with that feelgood factor, it creates a villain that is recognised by those affected. In reality, however,
the corporate systems created a structure,
where no one person was responsible for
loss of billions. When everyone is responsible, who do you blame? Reality, sadly, will
not replicate this film.
Tower Heist thus provides a very
real entertainment and fantasy-exorcism to its audience, even to those sit-
ting in India and not effected by depression
as much as Americans. In creating a super
villain whose villainy is not obvious but is
internal, it challenges our poor, average
protagonists who are just the opposite they are visibly honest with their inner
emotions. It thus becomes a supremely satisfying fantasy to see our heroes rise up to
the occasion and pull off an impossible
heist against a man who’s an expert hand at
this.
The pairing of opposites Ben Stiller and
Eddie Murphy, works for the film. The casting of the other characters, Matthew
Broderick, Casey Affleck and Gabourey
Sidibe is also spot-on. Tower Heist may not
be like a typical laugh-riot or your summer
blockbuster. Yet in mixing genres, good performances, and a steady
pace, it manages to deliver good humour, thrill
and a good-natured,
sweet vengeance.
Kim Kardashian ‘heartbroken’
over divorce, says mom
K
AP
IM Kardashian is “heartbroken” over her decision to divorce professional basketball player
Kris Humphries after only two months of marriage, but life will go on, her mother says.
“Just because somebody is getting a divorce doesn’t
mean life is over,” mom Kris Jenner said. “She’s not the
first person to get a divorce, and she won’t be the last, no
matter what the length of the marriage.”
Jenner, who divorced Kardashian’s father, O.J.
Simpson’s attorney Robert Kardashian, in the early 1990s
and is married to former Olympic decathlon gold medalist Bruce Jenner, said reports her reality TV star daughter’s relationship was made for TV are false.
“That would be insulting to this wonderful viewership
that has followed us from Day 1,” she said. “I don’t think
any of us are in that kind of situation where we have to go
out and ... create opportunities to make more money. I
think we are just fine.”
She also said the family members won’t stop sharing
their lives with the public.
“(The breakup) doesn’t mean that the rest of us are
going to change our personalities in any way and, you
know, completely turn into different people,” she said
Thursday. “We’re going to carry on and hopefully be
much stronger as human beings and as a family.”
After Kardashian, 31, filed for divorce earlier this week,
citing irreconcilable differences, she left for Australia on a

business trip with her sister Khloe Kardashian.
Jenner said it was important for Kim Kardashian to follow through on her business commitment.
“She takes a great deal of pride in her
business relationships, and she’s let a lot
of people down, especially her family,
she feels, on a personal level,” Jenner
said. “So, for her to let anyone else
down is hard for her. She wanted to
go, and these commitments were
made months and months ago and
something that she feels responsible for.”
Kardashian made it to Australia
recently but ended up cutting the
trip short.
Jenner, meanwhile, had planned to
make the media rounds this week in New
York City to promote her new memoir,
“Kris Jenner ... and All Things
Kardashian.”
Kardashian’s decision to split from
her husband after just 72 days moved
the attention off her mother’s book
and onto her.
Jenner said Kardashian needs to
weather the storm.
“Right now, the best advice I can
give her is to just keep your head held
high and ... get her heart in the right
place,” Jenner said.

Fake Don 2 song on internet
No slowing down for Big B
THE song Rehmat, which has been floated on the internet, is
not from Don 2, clarified the makers of the film. “There is a
fake song claiming to be from Excel Entertainment’s forthcoming Don 2 doing the rounds on the internet and the popularity
that the film and character has amongst the audiences, fans
are downloading the song as they think it’s from the film,” said
a statement issued by the film’s publicist. “Please note that
the song is not from the film and someone is just using it to
publicise that particular song. The Don 2 soundtrack will be
released in the market shortly and there will be an official
communication in that regard,” added the statement.
AT 69, Amitabh Bachchan is having one of the best phases of his
life — be it the big screen, TV or advertising space. “Some say be
selective, others advise rest and to leave. I advise myself that I
need to be occupied. The joy and the thrill of a daily shooting routine is still as infectious and desirable as when I started out,” Big B
posted on his blog bigb.bigadda.com. “This is good. The day it
stops, it will melt away the face that reacts to a mirror each morning wondering what contortions it shall endeavour for its oncoming
creativity,” added the four-time National Award winner, who has
been in the Indian film industry for over four decades and is its
foremost icon.

HE makers of Vidya Balan
starrer The Dirty Picture
have clarified that the film is
not a formal biopic.
“With reference to the legal notice

about the film, Balaji wishes to clarify
that The Dirty Picture is the romantic

male-dominated film industry. The
film is not a formal biopic or biography, as is being speculated. It is a
work of fiction, and any character’s
resemblance to real persons, living or
dead, is coincidental,” it added.
The clarification was issued after

“I have had a little practical knowledge of what goes into production whichever films I worked in, I used to
see what production was all about. I
am really happy with the way this film
has turned out. It was initially difficult, but everyone has been very cooperative and worked really hard,” said
the 30-year-old, whose production
