1 2 Welcome to Azerbaijan! Introduction: The first state on the territory of modern Azerbaijan was founded as early as in the IX century BC. In ancient age different tribes with various ancestries, cultures and religions lived there, and it takes a long time to learn the history of all the nations and states, that existed on this territory. But the company PASHA Travel offers you an opportunity to get much more information about the history, geography and culture of Azerbaijan during our tours and excursions, which includes the cities, places and facilities, that are the most interesting from the historical and cultural point of view. Geography: Azerbaijan occupies the territory in the south-east of the Caucasus and is located on the shore of the Caspian Sea. As the Caucasus Mountains conditionally divide the land into two continents, the country, thus, is located between Europe and Asia. Azerbaijan borders with Russia, Iran, Georgia, Turkey and Armenia. Located on a relatively small area, Azerbaijan has unique natural specifics, with nine of the existing eleven climatic zones from subtropical zone to the high alpine meadows. 3 4 History: Azerbaijan history traces back to the Palaeolithic age. In the north-west of the country on Aveydag Mountain and in Azykh caves in Karabakh the stone tools of that day were found. Moreover, in Azykh caves Neanderthaler`s jaw-bone was found - one of the most ancient species of ancestor of Modern Human. Relics of the Bronze Age were found in Khojaly, Gedabey, Dashkesen, Ganja, Mingachevir and Nakhichevan. Not far from Baku, in Gobustan, where ancient people lived, cave drawings of nearly 10,000 years ago were discovered. There is also a rock with a Latin inscription, stating of the campaign of the centurions of the Roman Legion in Gobustan in the first century BC. The inscription runs: “The time of the Emperor Caesar Domitianus Augustus Germanicus, Lucius Julius Maximus, Centurion XII of Legion Lightning.” State structure: Azerbaijan is a Presidential Republic, the Head of the state is President. According to the State Statistical Office of Azerbaijan, the Republic population is over 9 million people (as of mid2010). The country is multi-religious. Most of the religious are Shiite Muslims. There are also Sunni Muslims (in the northern part of the country, mainly Lezgins), Orthodox (Russian and Georgian), Jews and other religious. 5 Capital – Baku: The city, that is over 1500 years old, is located on the Absheron Peninsula. It received the status of the capital after the strongest earthquake in Shamakhy in the XII century, which had destroyed the city. It was the former capital of the state of Shirvanshahs. There are several theories about the origin of the name “Baku”. But the most accepted is one, which proves that the word comes from the Badi-kube, what means “the City of winds”. Baku is located right on the shore of the Caspian Sea. In the central part of the city, called the Old City, the narrow cobbled streets, fortresses, some buildings of the time have survived to the present day, and they give a visual representation, how Baku looked like at the time of its foundation. All these have remained, including the high walls surrounding the Old City. Azerbaijanis call it “Icheri Sheher”, that means the Inner city. But the real Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan is a modern, large and beautiful city, which combines features both of East and West. State language: Azerbaijani (Turkish languages group). Russian is also widely used. 6 Climate: Atmospheric circulation over the territory of Azerbaijan has the features typical for the subtropical zone. In warm season it is mostly little cloudy, dry and hot weather here. Summer is the longest season in Azerbaijan. The weather in autumn is usually warm and dry, so this time in Azerbaijan is considered as offpeak season. And winter is usually notable for its mildness. State currency: Official currency unit in Azerbaijan is Azerbaijan New Manat (AZN). 1 Manat is equal to 100 qepik. Holidays: On December 31 the Day of Solidarity of Azerbaijanis is celebrated, on March 21 the Spring Holiday – Novruz. The country celebrates the Independence Day on May 28. This day in 1918 the first Democratic Republic of the East – Azerbaijan – was declared. There are also other holidays, such as March 8 (International Women’s Day), the flowers festival - May 10, Constitution Day - November 12 and also all Muslim religious holidays. 7 DURATION OF THE TOUR: 3 hours Recommended season: the year round Tour route: Martyrs’ Lane Visit /launch to the seafront by funicular / Excursion in the Old city/return The tour includes: Transportation for the excursion time tour guide services entrance tickets to the specified museums Price is available upon request and depends on number of guests and the hotel chosen (where accommodation is included) BAKU – 8 PEARL ON THE CASPIAN The history of the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, goes back to the high antiquity, although the exact date of its foundation is still unknown. Absheron Peninsula territory, on which the city is located, has a favorable geographical position, convenient bay, warm, dry climate, fertile soil, natural resources, and therefore the establishment of ancient settlements here was rather consistent. Baku, its oil, “burning earth”, has been known far beyond its borders since ancient times. In the written sources of the Middle Ages, related to Baku, it is consistently mentioned about the “eternal lights”, located in its vicinity. Byzantine Paniysky Prisk wrote 9 about them one of the first at the beginning of the V century, describing the city of the Caucasian Albania, he referred to the area where “flame rises from an underwater rock.” The Arab historian al-Balazuri also reported in 754 about oil and Shirvan salt. Caravans arrived here from all over the Middle East for oil. Slavic, Khazar, Byzantine, Chinese, Iraqi, Syrian, Kenyan, Venetian, Iranian and Indian merchants came to Baku. Baku, located at the crossroads of the merchant routes, has always been in the center of attention of the foreign invaders, fighting for power in the region. City excursion begins with a visit to Martyrs’ Lane in the Nagorny Park, which is located on a hill in the western city part. This is the best place to view the city and the Baku Bay. The architecture of the capital, located on the Caspian Sea, is a mix of different styles, in particular, Gothic, Baroque, Classical and of course Modern. Further the excursion is continued with a visit to the Old City - “Icheri Sheher”, which is also a fortress. Tourists will see the main sights of the Old City, including the Palace of the Shirvanshahs (middle of the XV century), the Maiden Tower, and can walk along the beautiful Baku seafront. 10 11 12 Mardakan is an urban village, located within 34 kilometers from Baku, with ancient and rich history. The first stop of the tourists will be in the sanctuary - the tomb of Pir Hasan, shrine for many religious. Pir Hasan is a mausoleum, that was created in the XVI century. There are the mausoleum of the seventh daughter of Imam Musa al-Kyazimi Hazrati Khadija the buried on this place and the mausoleum of Pir Hasan in the courtyard of the sanctuary. Also here the famous Azerbaijani philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev and his daughter Sarah Khanum are buried. It is an interesting fact, that this place is known among Azerjaijanis as a place of fear rescue, which is cured by the old childag method (treatment with hot coals). The tourists will also see another sight - the former summer residence of the oil millionaire Murtuza Mukhtarov with its unique system of interconnected wells and pools, outstanding architectural structures, exotic plants and animals. In olden times the residence was a true paradise place among Absheron waterless saline steppes. Today Mardakan Arboretum of National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan is located on the place of the former cottage of Murtuza MARDAKAN «MOTHERLAND OF BRAVE» DURATION OF THE TOUR: 4 hours Recommended season: the year round Route: Departure from the destination point to Mardakan village/Pir Hasan excursion/Mardakan Arboretum excursion/Mardakan fortress excursion/return Mukhtarov. And on the territory of the Arboretum visitors can see a small three-room pavilion, in which a housemuseum of the Russian poet Sergey Yesenin is situated. Mardakan Arboretum is located within 4.5 km from the Caspian Sea coast. The area of the park is 12 hectares. Beautiful flora of the Arboretum grow on soil brought from Lankaran and is artificially irrigated with water taken from the wells from 30 to 80 m depth, pierced through the thick limestone slabs. Water from the wells is pumped to the pools, and then broadcasted to the entire territory of the arboretum park. There is a famous Mardakan fortress, a quadrangular castle (Mardakan) located in the village. The facility was built by Ahsitan I, the son of Shirvanshah Manouchehr III, and dates to the XIV century. The fortress was built in honor of the brilliant victory of Akhsitan over the enemy. The fortress is 22 m high and the thickness of the walls is up to 2.1 m, inside the fortress is divided into five layers. These places, where oil runs out of the ground and natural gas breaks through with burning torches, always attracted fire worshipers from all over the world. Baku, its oil, “burning earth”, has been known far beyond its borders since ancient times. In the written sources of the Middle Ages, related to Baku, it is consistently mentioned about “eternal lights”, located in its vicinity. Byzantine Paniysky Prisk wrote about them one of the first at the beginning of the V century, describing the city of the Caucasian Albania, he referred to the area where “flame rises from an underwater rock.” The Arab historian al-Balazuri in 754 also reported about oil and Shirvan salt. Caravans arrived here for oil from all over the Middle East. The official religion in the states emerged in the VII century BC, such as Mannea and Media, was Zoroastrianism, the spread of which was related to spontaneously flammable oil and gas sources. That is why such monument as Ateshgah temple has survived on its territory to today. Ateshgah Fire Temple is located within 30 kilometers from Baku center, in the south- 15 16 eastern suburb of Surakhani village on Absheron Peninsula. There was a sanctuary of Zoroastrian fire-worshipers, who came here to bow to sacred fire. It is assumed that this first shrine dates to the beginning of the Common Era. After the Arab had conquest Azerbaijan and Baku, and the population had adopted Islam, the fire temple was destroyed. Many Zoroastrians, who declined Islam, had to leave to India. The history of fire-worship continued there. Many years passed before trade and the Silk Road linked the fireworshipers with this sacred shrine again. Fire worship in Surakhani resumed after the XV century, when economic and cultural relations with India were being developed. As the sources certify, the arrival of Hindu pilgrims was noted already in the XVII century, they came to bow to the sacred fire. DURATION OF THE TOUR: 4 hours Recommended season: the year round Route: Departure from the destination point to Surakhani village/excursion to Ateshgah / excursion to Yanardag /return The tour includes: Transport for the excursion time tour guide services entrance tickets to the specified museums Price is available upon request and depends on number of guests and the hotel chosen (where accommodation is included) After visiting the sanctuary the tourists will go to the nature reserve Yanardag. There is Yanardag Mountain close to a small village Mehemmedli on the Absheron peninsula. The word “Yanar” in Azerbaijani means “burning” and “Dag” means “mountain”. And this mountain is really burning not metaphorically, but literally. Once on the Absheron there were a lot of places where natural gas, coming to the surface, auto ignited, but with the start of mass development of oil and gas fields on Absheron, there became less and less number of such places. Therefore, today the only place with this unique natural phenomenon - the natural elimination of natural gas to the surface in Absheron - is Yanar Dagh. 17 The reserve is well known, since there rock drawings have well survived - petroglyphs - a kind of art “archive” of human evolution on the Earth. “Documents” of these archives represent the first broadcast of the human nature to the world. In Azerbaijan there are several such “archives” in the open air. The largest of these is in Gobustan not far from Baku. It is a rocky block at the foot of the south-eastern part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range, close to the Caspian Sea. Nearby there is a modern highway, built on the place of the ancient Shirvan route. Archaeologists, who have devoted to Gobustan over dozens years, besides a huge number of rock paintings discovered here so called under-rock houses, living places of the ancient human, burial mounds and many other evidences of the previous centuries... Despite of the simplicity of the expression forms, all these artifacts provide a visual representation of human life at the dawn of its inception. However Gobustan rocks are not just the brightest witnesses of the prehistoric period of human existence. They reflect the history of this region for almost 15 000 years - from the end of the Upper Paleolithic age to the middle Ages. As 18 of today Azerbaijan scientists have discovered, described and studied over HISTORICAL ETHNOGRAPHIC AND ART RESERVE «GOBUSTAN» DURATION OF THE TOUR: 3 hours Recommended season: from March to October Route: Departure from the destination point Gobustan/excursion along Gobustan reserve tourist route/Visit to Gobustan museum/return 4 000 petroglyphs (rock drawings in the form of stone carving), and this important work continues. Tourists will be able to see the rock paintings of hunting, fishing, domestic life, group dances, and various symbols, including such as solar (swastika, spiral, cross), constellations. The drawings of hunting men and women are also of great interest (it is noteworthy that women hunted together with men), paintings of different animals - gazelles, tours, lions, goats, pictures of reed boats, two-wheeled carts, human traces. Unusual dishes of ancient man also preserved, which are a deeper cut in the stone, and even ornamented. You can get acquainted with unusual musical instruments - stones producing loud sounds, at that each “instrument” has its own specific sound. This is so-called “HAVAL DASH” - a stone-tambourine. The other evidence of ancestry has reserved on Gobustan rocks. In particular, here a rock with an inscription in Latin was discovered, written by Roman centurions of the XII Legion Lightning, indicating the presence of Roman legionaries in these places in the I century AD, who did not bypass this attractive region with their attention. From the inscription it can be found, at the time in Rome the emperor Domitian Caesar Augustus Germanicus ruled. If you are interested in architecture or want to see any architectural style or structure with your own eyes, it is not enough just to look at pictures on the internet or in books. Nothing reflects the spirit of the era of an architectural structure, as a real contemplation its look in daylight, standing close and having an opportunity to assess the building, touch its stones, patterns, ornaments… Architecture of Azerbaijan has absorbed architecture of peoples who lived and live on the territory of the country. The buildings are distinguished not only by their national identity and diversity, but also by the variety of used construction materials. For example, buildings in Baku and Shamakha are built of limestone, and in Sheki, Ganja, Nakhichevan and in suburbs wood and brick were mostly used. But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore, we invite you to see the beautiful patterns and 26 colors of the national architecture of Azerbaijan and its capital Baku, buildings and structures in which have absorbed all the best from the works of Azerbaijani architects of many generations. Day 2. Gobustan/ Ateshgah /Mardakan fortress/Yanardag Archaeological research, conducted in Azerbaijan for many decades, has revealed interesting places and artifacts, that helped to study the history of the origin, formation and development of the ancient people in the country. One of these places is Gobustan reserve, where you can see rock paintings and burial mounds dating back to X-VIII millennium BC. The rock paintings of men and women, animals, birds and hunting scenes have well preserved in Gobustan. Also in Gobustan the traces of the Roman Empire were found, namely the stay of the Roman centurions in these places, as evidenced by the inscription in Latin on the rock. 27 28 The official religion in the states Mannea and Media emerged on the territory of Azerbaijan in the VII century BC, was Zoroastrianism, the spread of which was related to the spontaneously flammable oil and gas sources. That is why such monuments, as Ateshgah Fire temple, located within 20 km from the city center, has survived to today. Once the temple was destroyed, but restored in XVIII century, and today tourists can visit the sanctuary and bow to fire, as it was done by numerous worshipers before them. The excursion continues with the visit to Mardakan fortress - a quadrangular castle located in Mardakan village not far from Baku. The facility was built in the XIV century by Ahsitan I, the son of Shirvanshah Manouchehr III, in honor of the brilliant victory of Akhsitan over the enemy. The fortress height is 22 m and the thickness of the walls in lower part is 2.1 m, in the upper – 1.6 m. Inside the fortress is divided into five layers. The visit to small village Mehemmedli on the Absheron peninsula, where Yanardag mountain is located, will be of great interest for tourist for sure. Once on the Absheron there were a lot of places where natural gas, coming to the surface, auto ignited, but with the start of mass development of oil and gas fields on Absheron, there became less and less number of such places. Therefore, today the only place with this unique natural phenomenon - the natural elimination of natural gas to the surface in Absheron - is Yanardag. Beautiful, with a playful touch of ornaments (Shebeke) and the composition of the palace has still reserved its original form as two centuries ago, and today the palace shine attracts many tourists. As it is known, being in a close relation with architecture, ornament art is mostly monumental. At the same time ornament is a special technique of decorative art, as well as one of the hardest kinds of art, that requires large experience and specific technologies. The uniqueness of the local ornament, used as an element of national architecture, is that it does not use studs and gluing. For example, frames, made of planks and decorated with colored glass, are used instead of doors and windows, and this gives a unique spirit to the ancient structures. The Silk Road took its start from Chang’an town, the ancient capital of China and then passed along the northern Tien Shan Mountains to Dunhua - the city at the edge of the Great Chinese Wall. Here, the single road split. The most difficult branch was called Northern, or Steppe, road. Having crossed the Tien Shan 36 Mountains, part of caravans went through «THE GREAT SILK ROAD» (Azerbaijan–Georgia) the Fergana Valley and Tashkent oasis in Samarkand, Bukhara, Khorezm, farther to the Caspian Sea shores. Another part of caravans were on their way from Samarkand to Bactria and then through the valley of Kashka-Darya came out to Termez, from where, having crossed Amu Darya river, went to the Middle East and India. Recently, the Silk Road states, including China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and others, have decided to jointly prepare an application to UNESCO for inclusion the Silk Road to the World Cultural Heritage. The acquaintance of the part of the Great Silk Road complicated route is included in the tour program. 37 38 Day 1. One of these places is Gobustan reserve, located at the foot of the south-eastern part of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range. Here in the rocks the unique rock drawings of men and women, animals, birds and hunting scenes have well preserved. Also in Gobustan the traces of the Roman Empire were found, namely the Legions, which were in these places and left inscriptions in Latin on the rocks. All these along with 39 40 burial mounds date back to X-VIII millennium BC and are of great interest not just for scientists and specialists, but for tourists, visiting Azerbaijan. The official religion in the states Mannea and Media emerged on the territory of Azerbaijan in VII century BC, was Zoroastrianism, the spread of which was related to the spontaneously flammable oil and gas sources. Naftalan (town) Chinar Hotel 5* Naftalan is a small balneal resort town, located within 350 kilometers to the west from the capital of Azerbaijan. The town got its name from the grade of oil, “naphthalan”, which composition is different from other types of oil and has well-known medical properties. At present there are only two such resorts, that use “naftalan” oil, one of which is located in Azerbaijan and the other - in Croatia. Naftalan oil has a higher viscosity, acid reaction, high specific gravity; it includes a small amount of benzene, kerosene and paraffin. For therapeutic purposes naphthalan is used as baths and lubricating while heating with sunwave lamp. In historical documents the compelling evidence of medicinal use of naftalan for treatment of several diseases are provided. The famous geographer Strabo and later famous traveler Marco Polo indicated the curative properties of this oil in their notes. Plutarch described how oil was used for treatment in the time of Alexander the Great. At the end of XIX century, German companies signed a supply contract for Naftalan oil to Germany, where on its base the production of ointments for burns, cosmetic creams, toothpaste, suntan oil began, which quickly spread, and were in great demand in Europe, America and even in Japan. After the revolution of 1917, Azerbaijan lost ties with other countries, as it was a part of the former Soviet Union.
