SFLECC
Traditionally, the busiest time of the tourism season is the first two weeks
of August. With the start of school looming, people want to spend the last
days of summer vacation on the lakes.
Currently, the mandate to lower Lake Freeman to protect endangered
species downstream and the lack of rain has created a tough situation for
lakes businesses, home owners and tourists. As of Wednesday, August 7,
Lake Freeman was reportedly 15-18 inches below its normal water levels.

“We wish we could wave a magic wand and bang, we have our water back,” said Joe Roach, Executive Director of
the Shafer Freeman Lakes Environmental Conservation Corporation (SFLECC), in a TV 18 interview. “Hopefully, we
can come up with some sort of compromise that will save mussels and save our lake.”
At the Chamber’s August Luncheon, we are honored to have Joe Roach as the guest speaker. Since 1995, Joe has
worked at the SFLECC. In March of this year, he was appointed to serve as Executive Director. Joe will bring us
up-to-date on the Lake Freeman situation and he will address the work of the SFLECC.

Board of Directors Elections
Annually, four board members’ terms expire. Jeff Alexander, Dow Dellinger, Lynn Deno and
Mary Minier were recently elected to serve on the Board of Directors. The election of the
Chamber Board is conducted by mail ballots to all members paying full membership dues.
When the new fiscal year begins on October 1, Mary will begin serving her first term.
Currently board members, Jeff, Dow and Lynn were re-elected. We sincerely thank all
who placed their names on the ballot. Thank you to Patrick Duffey for his years of service.

A Message from IU Health...Staying Safe in the Heat
As we know, August is one of the hottest months of the year which can mean fun days out
in the sun. It is also important to recognize that exposure to environmental heat can cause
heat-related illnesses. Symptoms such as cramps, fainting, exhaustion and heat strokes are
most common and can affect anybody.
Populations at higher risk for heat-related illnesses include those whose age is older than 65
or younger than 15 years; those with heart, lung and kidney diseases; those with limited
access to air-conditioning, cognitive impairment, obesity, impaired mobility, poor physical
fitness and those who perform strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest daytime hours.
Here are a few tips to protect you and your loves ones from complications from the heat.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Check with your doctor if you are on a limited-fluid plan.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages.
- Wear loose fitting, light weight and light-colored clothing.
- Don't get a sun burn. It reduces your body's ability to get rid of heat.
- Never leave children, pets or anyone else in a parked car for any period of time. The
temperature in your car can rise 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes on a hot day.
- Have access to air-conditioned facilities.
Preparing yourself and your loved ones for the warmer days is one of the keys to living a long,
healthy and happy life. That is my goal for all of my patients, and I hope it is for you also.

In the House...
It’s Monday evening at approximately 6:00 p.m. and I am in the office with
the doors locked. The later hours at work are the result of a move and a
major fundraiser…trying to keep all the balls in the air in motion!
A delightful couple stops outside the front door at 103 South Main Street.
They were reading the posters in the window. Thinking they are just
passing-by, I continued to work. But they linger and the woman peeks in the
glass door. Before I can reach the door, I hear the man state confidently,
“She won’t let us in…it’s after hours.” When I open the door to see if I can
help them, he’s a bit taken back. Frequent travelers that they are, he reiterates that Chambers don’t open their
doors to visitors after-hours even if someone is there.
Hailing from Toronto, Canada, the couple is on their way to a wedding in Lake Geneva, WI. They are looking for a
nice room and a great place to eat. I make two calls to see who has a vacancy. We find a room and I give them
several restaurant choices.
We talked about Toronto, a lovely place I visited with my sister and parents many moons ago. My mother bought a
set of Royal Doulton china there. We talked about the upcoming wedding in Lake Geneva. I told them about that
community’s ties to Chicago notaries such as the Wrigley family.
They talked about the hospitality they received on a Monday after-hours from your Chamber. I asked if I could take
their photo and write a short blurb about them. With tourism publications, directions and plans for an enjoyable
evening, I send them on their way.
This couple could have Googled, looked on Trip Advisor or used electronic devices to find lodging and restaurants.
Instead they searched for the Chamber. A Monticello resident told them the office had moved and directed them to
South Main Street. Having information at our fingertips is awesome. Having someone make a personal connection
and give their time to help you is still better…at least for some folks. Ask Bonnie and Thomas Calvert from Toronto!
Rotary Cardboard Boat Regatta
On Saturday, July 26, Monticello Rotarians staged the Second Annual Cardboard Boat
Regatta at Bluewater Beach Park. This was an awesome event and a great tradition!
The Chamber’s entry was entitled, Goin’ Down. Luckily for Kim Heiny who manned the
boat, that didn’t happen! However, Terry “Huddy” Hudson did GO DOWN! Thanks to
Jeff Bonnell and Huddy for creating the Chamber’s boat. Congratulations to the Rotary
for anther successful event!

More than 40 years ago, a wooden structure stood on the
courthouse lawn as a Lakes Information Center. The
building had a sliding window and someone was on-hand
to give out information to residents and tourists.
Later, a log cabin replaced that building on the same
location. In front of the log cabin, there were two large
arrows…one pointing the way to Shafer and one pointing
south to Freeman.
Following the tornado, the Monticello Redevelopment
Commission with county officials decided to build a unique
triangular-shaped building with a basement on the site
where information had always been given. The signage
on the structure read Chamber of Commerce and Lakes
Information Center.
One-third of this small building with glass frontage sat in
the city limits with a deed belonging to the Chamber.
Two-thirds of the building sat on county property and
came with a 99-year lease agreement between the county
and the Chamber.
The cornerstone for the building was set in 1976. The
historic courthouse bell that survived the tornado was
placed in the apex of the building. Contrary to local folk
lore, a secret tunnel to the courthouse never existed.
When the city and county opened discussions to create a
new look for Constitution Plaza, the fate of the building
came into play. You know the rest of the story.
On Monday, June 16th, the Chamber moved to a temporary
location at 103 South Main Street, the former Hallmark
building. We sincerely thank the owner of that building
for space to stay.
The last week in June, demolition on the Chamber building
began. As demolition occurred, two individuals stood
across the street watching.
For Janet Dold, that building was a constant for 19 years.
For Jessica West, memories of a 15-year-old high school
starting her first job flooded back. Neither of us is ashamed
to say that tears flowed down our faces. We loved that
unique building and treasure the memories it held.
Until we saw the concrete footprint, we had no idea how
small the building was! It never felt claustrophobic. It
always felt warm and inviting. John MacOwan called it
“the pie-shaped dome.” We called it our Chamber HOME!
